  • I love this one, it kind of reminds me why I started posting up these vids in the first place. Overby's there. So is Cogbill, O'Steen and Gilliland.
Paul Brand just kept his head down, hit his marks, and just worked upon making those 45 miles disappear under his hands & feet as fast as he could, once they were actually racing, instead of cutting laps earlier in the week. Seemed to work for him that his car kept running while others blew up or had electrical problems.
Personally, I think this might have been one of Group 44's best moments ever*. Forget the team's battles with Huffaker and Holbert in CP and DP, or even their efforts in GTP. On this day, in *this class..even Gp 44's 'Public Relations guy' was fast enough and smart enough to win a Gold Medal. That's some pretty good preparation, and some great driving, too. And I suppose, some intelligence on Bob's part to hire someone who was actually a driver as the PR guy in the first place.
"To finish first, once must first finish." Sometimes a cliche has a basis in truth.

Born into the SF region my dad, SCCA HALL OF FAMER DR Dick Lee raced bathtubs for 25 years before becoming chief safety officer making the SF Region the safest of all regions and was briefly the National Director before bailing out on the pedantic national politics and refocusing on having the safest region.
Together with my mom and my siblings we were intimately acquainted with the tracks up and down the West Coast and the camaraderie of club members and the intimacy of club racing .
I inherited a collection hundreds of dash plaques going back to the 1956 Reno Rally
Thank you for posting these memories. Well done..

My grandmother's brother is Paul Brand. I have heard his story about his win and have always wanted to see this, but I never thought that I would be able to find any trace of his big race. Seeing it now, I feel the same happiness that my great uncle and his team felt almost 45 years ago. To whoever posted this, thank you. Because of you, I am able to experience something big to me that happened way before my time.

I just had John O’Steen’s 356 seen racing in this video in my shop. It’s restored now doing rallies and vintage racing, cool to see it back in the day with the 80s race setup and that front nose is fiberglass. John saved the original metal and it was all put back on a few years ago by Roy Smalley.

Great footage! Terrific racing. If NASCAR ran this race it would've been all yellow flags!
