The Jaguar was pretty ambitious for the time. The technology just wasn't there yet and it lacked third party support because it was way too difficult and expensive to program. If it came out a few years later, it probably would've been a massive success.
Doubtful. If they had released it later with the Playstation already on the market, I think even less people would've given a shit about it.

Also just like the number of bits that a processor is does not fully indicate how good the processor is because a 32-bit processor with 4 gigs of memory could conceivably be better than a 64-bit processor with 4 gigs of memory 1440p screen could conceivably be better in some other ways than a 4K screen.

@Stefano Pavone interesting journey. I'm in the States but only got started with NES in 1993 because a family friend gave us his system and games (and power glove!). Then it was Sega Genesis/MD because Sonic 3&K was, and still is, my absolute jam. I don't think I even knew about SNES until about when N64 was about to come out, somehow lol

Yes and no, the Jag had so much to offer. But it was so different that programmers never had time to really build for it. Before it went defunct
ElectronicPleasure it also had some serious bugs in the HW. You had to program around them and some features were completely broken.
i hate how consels and even the 3ds will have regular version and then a suped up version that doesn't have any exclusive games or anything but is still bought by people for some reason and conversely pc people bragging about how there supercomputer that is responsible for a mortage and simply runs games at billion fps

Graphics aren't necessarily important, but aesthetics *are* important. After all, most of the information you're getting while playing a game is visual; that part should at least look decent. Shovel Knight doesn't have great graphics persay, but it looks good, which actually is important.
I personally hate graphic standards, all I care about, graphics wise, is that they don't hurt my eyes, and its not mostly one color, other than that graphics don't mean anything
Good graphics also help with functionality. If the visual design is good it will be clear what does what and so forth.

graphics don't matter to me personally if the game is fun and entertains you and has a good story then the graphics shouldn't matter

I'm 41 and remember the Genesis Does with 16 Bit graphics. The Turbo Grafx 16 was cool also. I'm super happy with PS2 even though I have zero time to play. My kids got newer systems, but so many games I haven't even played on Ps2 yet.
I grew up with NES, then Super Nintendo
But I had no idea what bits were until the N64

I love how these videos are the exact same as today so it's not as weird when you go back and look at older videos which are usually worse, but these have always been great
The Jaguar was a prime example of some computer science: Bits don't mean graphics. All bits mean is the "word size" of the system, meaning how many bits (1s and 0s) it considers to be one unit of memory. When we are talking about very low bits, like 8, you can't make very big numbers of complex patterns in the memory, so you have to resort to some tricks to do complex things. It also limits how much memory the system can have, since a pointer to a location of memory is a system integer, so the more bits you have, the higher numbers the pointer can take on, and the more memory you can have. 64-bit is as high as a computer system needs to go, because a 64-bit number is freaking huge, 64-bits can represent any written character in the world and 64-bit integers can point to any amount of RAM you are likely to have for a long time. And that is about it for bits. But how powerful a system is is much more than that. Graphics are determined by video memory, GPU speed, architecture and other things. Same with sound.
The problem was the GPU was only 32-bits, but everything else may have been 8-16-32 or 64 bits depending on where the data is going. So that means when you want to do a gpu command, you'd have to downgrade the information from 64 bits to 32 bits chunks or vice versa you might have to convert a 8 bit memory value and upscale it to 32 bits. It makes it really difficult to program something when you don't know whether a data piece is 8, 16, 32, or 64 bits so I imagine the developers probably just stuck with the lowest common denominator and that probably meant the entire system wasn't running at what the hardware makers intended for it to be. If it had more developer support, chances are some development companies would probably make some pretty cool games for it kind of like what happened to the N64/PS1 era where developers could make some cool games based on the limitation of the hardware.
Funnily enough things haven't changed much really. Rather than being 8 bit vs 16 bit, it's 900p vs 1080p. Who knows, one day it may be 4k vs 5k gaming!
***** Right now I think it's 1080p VS 4K. 60hz VS 120hz VS 144hz. 5k probably won't be used commonly, to the point where it wouldn't have a fancy term like 4K. I think that it will come down to 4k vs 8k before people stop caring.

Its so refreshing to watch these old AVGN videos from years ago. Watched a hell of a lot in High School when I would always be alone, but gotdamn this helped me a lot in finding what I love both film, and video games.

I'm 13 and I love old games. Such as games on the Atari 2600, Genesis, NES, DOS games (kinda went out of order)
I actually have all of the Elder Scrolls games, though Arena is my least favorite, I still enjoy it. Now Daggerfall, that's a really good DOS game. I'd suggest it to ya. But yeah, AVGN and other gaming channels sparked my interest in old games.

it was 64 bit, it's just that not too many programmers knew how to use the tech.
Aiyetoro Metruian it used a 16-bit CPU, a separate 32-bit RISC processor, and a 16-bit DSP to handle the system's processing chores. While 16+32+16 does add up to 64, those three processors combined do not add up to the power available in a single, true 64-bit model like that used in the N64.

I had both. The 3DO Dolby surround Soccer was pretty good. I still have the jaguar. The 3DO stopped working, but the jaguar still works. Alien vs Predator was the only game worth playing.

To be fair, Star Fox had its own coprocessor built into the cartridge, because the SNES alone couldn't do graphics like that. Also, I would say that while the artwork might not have made great use of it, you can definitely tell in the games you showed that the graphics were higher quality than the Genesis and SNES - but maybe that's only apparent if you're familiar with the specific limitations of those consoles, since the best games were careful to play to their strengths.

Those heady bygone days of... right now, seriously, go stick a wii disk in a wii u. And while it's library is still a little thin, Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, etc are all amazing examples of refined gameplay.

Well not really the Atari sold vastly more than the intellivision, and the atari was still selling well even after the NES hit the market in some countries.
In pretty much all generations the console with the weaker hardware actually turns out the best selling right up until this generation, except for the 4th gen

all i said was, the importance of graphics was always there, it doesnt really matter if its done on the weaker hardware or not.
in other words, graphics were always a major topic in discussing games, we may disconsider them as just old, now, but at their time, they all wanted to show that part, thats the whole reason for the mode 7, it didnt do much, but it looked cool, so we saw them in games that really didnt need that, like all fina fantasy games on the snes.
graphics arent a bad thing, they are a tool, and like many others, it can be "over focused".

Well i'm not against graphics, i'm glad the tech is always on the uprise, but I wouldn't put it before gameplay when it comes to a solid game.

Reality check: Bits are everything. 32 bit operating systems on PC can only address around 4GB of memory (simply put, a bit is a 'switch', either a 1 or a zero) with 4 bits, you can count to 2 to the power of 4, or 16 (normally the amount of colors you can display at once, and the largest number can be processed). With 8 bits, that's 256 colors. With 16, that's far far more.
In PC terms, if you want more than 3 GB of memory, you absolutely need a 64 bit operating system and a CPU to match. Realistically, at 64 bits you can count to an enormous number and don't really need much more. It also defines how much throughput you can have, how many switches can be processed in a single clock cycle.

Oh, I thought it was because the Wii and the Wii U are pieces of shit that sacrifice gameplay, graphics and load times on the altar of gimmicky controls that don't fucking work; the Power Glove and Virtua Boy of our generation if you will.

To be fair, bad framerate can completely ruin a game, while bad graphics, to some extent, can be overlooked.
Frame rate is important, bruver. But graphics? Not as much.
