Sega 32X - Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN)

- The Nerd finds out what another add-on, the 32X, for the Sega Genesis is like, and tries out some of the games that were made for it, including Primal Rage and Doom. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 26.
Released in 1994, Sega intended for this add-on to keep gamers entertained until the launch of the Sega Saturn and as a cheap entry into the 32-bit era. Sega also hoped to see the 32x increase the longevity of the aging Genesis (Mega Drive outside of North America). Today, the system is merely a curiosity and an obscure piece of gaming history. With a small library consisting of graphically improved versions of Genesis games and arcade ports along with the imminent arrival of the Sega Saturn, the 32x flopped and was discontinued roughly only two years after its launch. Though the graphics of some games were decent for the time, some games like Doom were missing content like different levels and had poor sound quality since it used the Genesis' sound chip. Many people see the 32x as the beginning of Sega's eventual downfall in the console market as third parties began to lose faith in Sega. In this Episode, the nerd picks up from where he left off with the Sega CD to look into this worthless parasite of the Sega Genesis. Just how bad is the 32x? Watch to find out.

The best part of this Nerd video is not even about the 32X, but instead the rant about labels and power plugs.
Perhaps this gave him the inspiration for YKWBS.
NekoBoyOfficial I'm pretty sure it already existed before. In fact, the "mountain of cacadookie" picture is from the opening animation.
IronDawg I love this bit "That poor Genesis is just thinkin' "Oh dear God, take this shit off me!" xD
I've been wondering whether to get the AVGN movie :)

Kieran Tobin PS4 doesn't have one... just say'in...
#PS4BEASTMODE
***** No, it is ass. Not because of the games or controllers, so far those are okay. It's the system itself. Why don't I like it? It lacks backwards compatibility. The PS3 had it, why not the 4?
Jon Kelley The way the new gen consoles were made. They had to sacrifice backwards compatibility. The PS4 and X-Box One are made more like PCs and thus, can not read the previous discs due to how the last generation consoles were produced. It is a technical issue that allows the newer generation more processing power and such.
Jon Kelley Just get/keep a PS3. Problem solved.
I don't have a 'problem' with backward compatibility. I own all platforms.
We live in the year 2007.. how weird does that sound :)

I've also seen double-sided power strips.
I've seen one that turns with every input section (or whatever) and it works amazingly
You mean to say that you have a Fire-hazard in the making?
That's the way they all are in Ireland. It's probably because plugs are shaped differently here and wouldn't fit otherwise.
3:21 Thankfully, Sega had its own power adapters for the plugs to plug sideways.
2.50$? Now its around 80-100$ on ebay
You weren't kidding. I just checked it out.
retro gaming used to be pretty cheap back when all this stuff was only like 10-15ish years old
also he did say it was at a flea market so the seller probably just thought it was a piece of plastic lol
2007 was a different time. Few people wanted old games then, and the market reflected that. In 2005, I bought a Virtual Boy with the stand, visor, a controller, 3 games, and the power adapter for $50 on eBay. I don't recall if that was with shipping or not. I did shop around on eBay for it, though; $50 wasn't the going rate, I got it a little bit cheaper, by maybe $15 - $25.
Austin Lucas: right, also the Sega 32X did poorly, meaning that only few ppl bought them so in 2020 tjeres very few of the original 32X consoles.
(Obviously people can play the games on PC emulatirs but the few ppl who want to collect the original hardware will have to pay $80 or so for it simply because supply is low

Mortal Kombat II was pretty much the only game worth having a 32X for. My first 32X would constantly freeze up, so I exchanged it, took it home, and THAT one would freeze up. Months later, I ended up getting an N64 for my birthday, and got rid of the 32X.
There was also a pretty good port of a game called Blackthorne on it, but it's not worth getting at this point because you can download the PC version from Blizzard's official website for FREE.
I just noticed.

I think he's got like 6 more. If you've watched the intros he's got quite a few...also in Dark Castle he's still got one plugged in.
I believe that in addition to having additional ones, I read somewhere that all he destroyed was the shell, taken off the actual hardware, so he could still use it.
maybe it was the one that he got for 2.50.
Maybe it was just fake fire and he animated the fire and holes in the 32x who knows?

Few hours till July 4 2020 and big hello to everyone. The power adapters are still a problem today but some things are better. Some games improved, some still suck and too costly. Rewatching these during coronavirus quarantine in Arizona. Still good vids. 2007 seemed long ago yet the 80s sooooo long ago when i was a kid. I remember when all these came out.

a good advice is if you want old Sega games like Sonic just download it on you're Nintendo Wii on Nintendo Wii Shop it is a lot more cheap and you don't waste money and if you have an old console and trying to decide which console you are going to get the game on just select a Nintendo console or an Atari console the Sega games that were actually good you can just download it for an cheap price on you're Nintendo Wii it is much better and much cheaper.

The box thing on the power adapter I can explain with the knowledge that I have:
That Box is an AC adapter to make sure the CORRECT amount of power is going in. Without it, the console could overcharge and blow up or the battery could get fried.
Sometimes they may put the box a bit further up the cord but I only see that with laptop chargers and computer setups.

"When did the idea of simple convenience become obsolete."
I still use this line in arguments, thanks James!
I think of this line in many situations even today.
It’s convenient to keep the boxes the games came in
Like local multiplayer somehow becoming a thing of the past. Want to invite a friend over and throw on a game that you can enjoy with local split screen co-OP? Ha! It's the eighth generation bro.
@@PlanetShlorpian There's still local co-op games being made in PC, console, and even the arcade. There's even Steam with online support for local co-op games by giving them remote access. So I wouldn't really call local multiplayer as a thing in the past.
.
Keep in mind that not many people are able to huddle up a single screen and just prefer having a big individual screen. Back then, if we had a choice we would take that route.
There's also the case where people are just too distant from each other and online is more convenient than physically being there, this is true for having friends overseas.
Oh did I hear someone need a smart device?

Hey at least Star Wars in the Sega 32x didn’t offer micro transactions.
Every App ever and it isn't like a simple $5 here or a $2.99 there. It is more like a 49.99 here and a $99 here and a $159 there. Basically, it is all overpriced as hell and and it is impossible to progress without doing so unless you want to spend a decade trying to survive long enough to level something up, unless it isn't an RTS game(You get farmed if you aren't rich), but some rules still apply. For example, a new item to equip and give you better stats, but it is only available in the micro-transaction shop and it takes forever to even get it, because they don't make it that simple.
Andrew Schmitt, Sega 32x itself was a microtransaction.
