Wow. The Coleco Telstar Arcade was the first video game I ever had as a kid. I about fell out of my chair when I saw you had one. I was wondering what that thing was called.
ikr? there is also a game called "BIT.TRIP FLUX" (a "rhythm" game that's like pong) and in the final stage, the opponent is full size and it feels IMPOSSIBLE 😂💀
@@twistedyogert oh they definitely did. War is when technology booms, and even after the active wars we had decades of cold wars with global superpowers trying their hardest to not get left behind technologically
I always love when he does those "Let's see what these modern consoles have to offer" type skits. It's like the AVGN character never realised that the 90s ever ended.
I can only imagine back then: Gamer 1: My pong counts my score; Gamer 2: Mine has multiple games; Gamer 3: I don't want to brag, but mine has COLORS. Gamers 1 and 2: 0_0 0_O
9:05 "The only problem is that a lot of these pong consoles didn't include an AC adapter." Nintendo: *Looks at 3DS* Narrator: "Then they got an idea. An awful idea. Nintendo got a wonderful, awful idea."
That was only the case from the New 3DS onwards and that was probably because every Nintendo handheld in the DS and 3DS family uses the same AC adapter, so they assumed you'd have one lying around.
@@icarusmarioFAN No they didn't. The original DS used the Game Boy power connector, and the DS lite had its own unique power connector. Only the DSi/3DS shared a power connector.
Brickbusters Neither have I, though it might have something to do with the fact that I rarely use the joycons for SSBU, which, given how much you jerk about the analogue stick in that game, probably is the cause of it (even the timing matches up)
The amount of times I rewatched this video is countless. There's something about this specific episode that just makes it so rewatchable. This is a USDA certified classic video
Totally. I was trying to explain the appeal of these videos to my girlfriend just now. It would be so fun to spend a whole night just eating pizza drinking beer and trying to beat some shitty old games with James.
I have a book where Lamborghini's and console games and P.C. Games are retro. Instead they have portable full games built into their bloodstream when they want to access it.
My Grandad couldn't afford one of these back in the 70s, so he made his own. Seriously, he wired some circuits together and shit and MADE HIS OWN PONG GAME. He sounds like the coolest dude ever. If he hadn't died 21 years ago he'd probably have invented youtube or something.
+Billy Hicks Your grandpa didn't die 21 years ago, Billy. He faked his death and changed his name. He really died in 2011, under the name "Steve Jobs".
Wouldn't really rate it highly myself. Did get to thinking of my favourites though and I'd say (in no particular order) they'd be: Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle, Wizard of Oz, and Game Glitches. Edit: Also Sega Activator Interactor Menacer. Proof that James's best days are not behind him in my opinion.
+Alan Trovoski Doing that would cause a massive neural overload in the brain of said kid causing critically high blood pressure leading to acute brain aneurism and seizures and death within seconds via total brain death If you take a modern game system back to the 80s I recommend you do not show anyone
toonertube I remember playing Gears of War 1 with a friend and he started fiddling with the color setting of the TV thinking the TV had gone black and white XD
GhostSniper3081 I remember using old composite AV out to composite on PS2, it was in black and while, and audio didint work, then I switched to SCART (Im in Europe), its like something between 720p and 1080p
Hey James, try taking the pongs apart and dropping some rubbing alcohol into the controller knobs and twist them a bit and wait for it to evaporate and sometimes it fixes jittery switches and knobs, worth a shot!
+Kayfabe Broken That doesn't mean it doesn't suck ass. And why did you post 2 very similar comments. I know it's not a TH-cam glitch because they have some slight differences, like you couldn't use the edit button.
back then we had no castlevania, mega man, mario, sonic, or touhou, we had pong and some primitive graphic arcade games, at least people tried to make it look like something, pong and breakout are great time killers and tetris reduces PTSD (though tetris was 1984)
My dad had that sears model but the controller didn't dismount. The reverse pong as you called it was basically pretty accurate discription. You score by letting the ball go through the hole. The game with the adjustable wall was a one player game.
Now I'm curious to know if some of the developers who made these consoles put numbers at the end of their products to represent model types, or they just wanted to sound futuristic, like how most gadgets in the 80-90's had "2000" on their names.
I know that in at least some cases, it meant something. Commodore liked to name systems for how many kilobytes of memory they had (Commodore 64; Amiga 500; Amiga 1200). Later, during what James calls the "bit wars", the number of bits in the processor or graphics processor was in the system name, like the Turbografx 16 and the Nintendo 64.
This was the last episode before the series went on a brief hiatus because James was dealing so much stress from doing two episodes a month for Gametrailers and they were totally okay with this hiatus and having him make one episode a month
Seeing the major contrast of classic to modern really makes you sit back and reflect on how far we have come in gaming.... by the way wonder if AVGN plan a special for the 40th anniversary of home gaming next year.
People here saying that xbox 360 look so old and the graphics is evolving so fast nowdays...actually not as you think. If you take early xbox 360 games like gears of war or bioshock (12-13 years old) , sure we took some steps ahaed, but not even closer as those games themself compare with games came out 12-13 years earlier (so we are talking about 1993 circa). I mean...the evolution between late 80s/early90s and mid00s is mindblowing.
TBH if you go back another 13 years back it is even more mindblowing. Remember, 1993 is a year that Doom came out. And I would say that Doom to Bioshock, damn even Doom to Doom Eternal is still less of a gap than Atari 2600 to Doom.
Tbh the some 7th gen games still fit in perfectly with 8th gen. Graphics haven't improve all that much only better lighting, effects, draw distance, textures, that's it and I doubt 9th gen graphics would also take a big leap the last time graphics took a big leap was 6th gen to 7th gen

Did you ask him why the game modes only changed the color? lol
Does his console still word?
Work
Had this same thing happen, albeit it was a different one of them (I believe my father had the Sears one, if memory serves)
This is wholesome to me
"What's this? Asshole pong?"
Makes me laugh every time
Classic line that is highly underrated in my opinion

This will forever be one of my favorite episodes. Basically, episodes that involve hardware always end up being in my top for AVGN.
Same here
My favorite is the action 52 review
Mine's is Bugs Bunny's Birthday Blowout
Same. This, the Sega CD/32X, the Atari 5200, all favorites of mine
Same. This, Power Glove and NES Accessories are some of my favorite episodes ever.

Interesting I didn’t know that
Now THATS a fun fact!!
Not only that, but old houses typically only had a single outlet in an entire room and the tv or lamp would usually be using it. lol
The PlayStation 2 is as old to us now, as the NES was when James Rolfe started AVGN.
No way!
In a few years we will say the same about the Ps3... Man now I feel old!
NES(1983) to AVGN(2004) - 21
PS2(2000) to this comment(2019) - 19
Holy shit i am shook
Holy fuck I feel old
And I'm old enough to have played a Dreamcast when it was on display in stores (2000.) I'm 28. _Daaaaaaamn!_
I need a 10 Hours loop of AVGN pulling out Pong consoles.

"The Xbox 360 a modern game console"
Thats how you know this is a old episode
Yea. This episode was released before the xbox one came out
@@therandomizer9943 no shit
1 gen old doesn't mean retro. It is still modern. Maybe after the next Xbox comes you could call it retro. But I doubt even then.
I say it's an old episode since he's playing GTA 4.
It's not current, but it's definitely modern. It's certainly not retro by any measure yet
That last triangle console is kinda neat.
@Brandon S hahaha
@Brandon S makes sense
You mean Coleco Telstar Arcade?
@Brandon S Can't argue with that Logic
My dad actually owned one back in the day, I found it at my grandparents’ house. Don’t know where it is now, but hope they still have it.
Its funny because GTA 4 is almost old enough for him to review.
