Ah yes, my favorite instrument... Mike Patton :) This dude isn't human, he's probably the most versatile singer in recent music history. Very low notes or extremely high pitched notes that only freakin' dogs can hear? No problem. Clean, smooth, sexy voice and 30 seconds later, brutal and aggressive? Easy. Without losing control over his voice, even when singing in other languages like Italian, Spanish or Portuguese... WHAT A BEAST!
Undoubtedly one of the greatest vocalists of all time purely because of his ridiculous versatility. He can cover Lionel Richie's "Easy Like Sunday Morning" and sound smooth & dreamy but also crank out something like "Surprise You're Dead!"...and everything in between.
Mike put out an album in 2010 called Mondo Cane where he covered 1950s Italian songs. Full orchestra, backing vocals. Very operatic. Highly recommend for a vocal analysis.
He's only 25 in this performance. His voice keeps growing as he ages. It's unbelievable. Faith No More is still one of the best bands I've ever seen live. Mike Patton lost none of his voice or grit.

@@JeronimoFalls he wrote the lyrics and recorded the tracks for The Real Thing EXTREMELY FAST. A matter of days. They weren't really his songs. On Angel Dust, the entire band pushed the envelope artistically. Patton evolved his craft dramatically.
I'm 40 years old... I've watched this performance like 5 times tonight and it still gives me chills down my spine. A lot of my absolutely favorite songs from other bands don't do that to me anymore. As much as I still love them.
I grew up with Mike in Eureka in the late 70s and 80s. He was my brother's best friend, and my best friends were Mr. Bungle drummer Jed Watts and guitarist Trey Spruance. This guy is amazing in his range and switching from growling to screaming to singing, just something fantastic with him. I hope he's feeling better these days.
I remember being 13 in 1993 and talking to someone who went to HS with Mike Patton. I was spending time near Arcata that summer. I was hugely into FNM at that point and had heard of Mr Bungle but had not yet gotten into them. I ended up seeing Mr Bungle in concert in Portland in 1999.
@@jirikurto3859 All of the guys in patton world are awesome, I remember buying a load of merch off dead cross bassist Justin Pearson's 3 one g records website and he emailed me a few days later making sure that I wanted the stuff and didn't order it by accident/drunken spending spree, and he's always been cool every time I've run into him at shows so much respect for how they treat people.
Mr.Bungle are some fucking mad ass musicians lol, I covered squeeze me Macaroni for one of my finals on the bass guitar when I was studying music and the teachers didn't know what to do with it lol. Sent the audience nuts though, there's a lot of love for them in the UK.
My favorite thing about Mike is that he's used his wealth and fame to support independent artists on his own label. Ipecac doesn't see a lot of cash flow, but he keeps going with it because the artists get real exposure through him. My second favorite thing about him is, he would never brag about that.
Mr. Bungle had to break up due to money issues after Anthony Kiedis got them kicked off of pretty much all of the tours they were scheduled for. Makes sense he'd want to have a label where weird (in a good way) bands can do their thing without major label whims screwing them.

MIke Patton is the best rabbit hole you are going to love falling down. There are so many bands and genres... Mr Bungle is My personal fave but you could do a year's worth of episodes just to cover the basics of the expansive Patton universe.
Mike is just unbeatable as a vocalist. A true throat monster. I think Mr. Bungle's California showcase his talent the most and people should not miss his work with The Dillinger Escape Plan and Dead Cross as well.
California 100% Vanity Fair, Retrovertigo, The Holy Filament... so many to choose from. I'd also recommend The Sweet Smell of Success from Tomahawk but there's no good live version of it.

Faith No More is the weirdest band. None of their songs really sound the same, they switch genres even within the same song sometimes never mind across an entire album, but you know it's them within the first two bars, well before the vocal kicks in. This is one of the main reasons they're my favourite rock band. They're far too diverse to fit in a box yet every track has you thinking "Oh that's so FNM".

@m.l.b.2908 initially as a teen I was thrown off by Angel dust - but as I grew more attentive musically through the years- (and being a long time fan of FNM-) I think what made them mainstreamy was their high impact bright (epic) tones mixed with the tribal beats and the complementary darker/foreboding undertones of their music. When they broke- "rap -rock" (aerosmith) and funk- rock" (rhcp, living color)were being infused into the mainstream. With Mike's sharp percussive nature- and that amazing band - I think they caught the reigns of that horse and rode it...Mr bungle was watching:)
Faith No More's Angel Dust album is a masterpiece and is easily one of the best rock albums of all time. I highly recommend giving it a solid listen a few times over.
Of course "Epic" is just a badass song, but "Midlife Crisis" is my 2nd favorite from the band! Also, I love listening to you react to music because you don't just cringe and say "eww, he's just growling into the mic". Instead you get giddy explaining the complexities of the breathing and technique required to sing like this. Thank you!!
Epic is the most generic song in his entire catalog. I really hope it's not covered. He was literally limiting his vocal range on that album bc he thought he was a temporary member and was still dedicated to his previous band (Mr. Bungle). The song Caffeine (also off the same album) was written during an experiment in sleep deprivation. He’s also clean as they come. No drugs at all because they can hurt his voice. He views his voice as an instrument.
He definitely at least drinks. I have drank wine literally right next to him at the counter at Oliveto in Berkeley some years back when it was still open. He's good friends with Chef Paul Canales who now runs Duende in Oakland but used to be the executive chef at Oliveto.
"Angel Dust" is, by far, my favorite album of theirs. "Small Victory" has some of craziest vocal and instrumental acrobatics that you'll ever hear crammed into a radio-length song.
If you like truly unique music, "angel Dust" has to be on your top rock/punk/metal albums list. Its beautiful, disgusting and crazy all rolled into one.

Christ... Its universally understood what a pure talent the man is, that the band was in its prime, but its difficult to remember exactly what a miracle Mike Patton really is from mere recollection alone. When you hear him in real time, its just fucking incredible, there are very few vocalists (aside from chris cornell etc) that cause that awe delivery so consistently. He STILL at it too! What a career, what an odd fellow, truely unique!

Air-Conditioned Nightmare has some of the best range to me. Starts out high, immediately goes into a mix of high and low vocals, then you've got his great backing "bop bops", back into the high notes, then down into a middle - you get the picture.

you're going to find that Mike Patton, like Maynard from tool, needs multiple outlets for his creativity. It's a deep rabbit hole to fall into. He uses like another instrument. in addition to FNM, there is Tomahawk, Fantomas, Mr. Bungle, Peeping Tom, and probably 15 other side projects he's involved with. His vocal stylings are schizophrenic, and they are so, so good.
Mike Patton live is one of the best experiences you will ever experience. I have seen him live over 20 times, he is so great, you can feel how powerful his voice is, he’s a machine!
I'm always astonished that off stage this band could hardly be in the same room without nearly killing each other, and yet during performance, they are together within tiny fractions of a second and so unified.

Shamelessy I was one of those folks who only knew FMM due to their hit song Epic. A few years ago I decided to give the band a proper listen and never looked back and will go so far to say that Epic is far from being the best FNM song.
They’re still one of my favorites after all these years. Every album is so different from each other. Mostly due to Mike Pattons extraordinary vocal range and styles

Me and a couple of my friends did a legitimate 3 day weekend of no sleep, just pure objective research on trying to decide, definitively, who is the greatest front man of all time. We called it a tie between Mike and Freddie Mercury. That was prob more of a respect thing than an objective fact, but how could you expect us to stick to the rules, we'd been up for 3 days, drinking, sniffing things and jamming to music all weekend. lol. It really is a tough call between those 2. Had Axel Rose not derailed he could have been in the Convo. Scott Wieland same thing. Patton has done it for decades though, and over such a range of vocal demands. And just to clarify, our point (and I think yours, too) is greatest FRONT MAN not just best singer.
@@tpadgett2 right, definitely what I mean is frontman. He’s such a phenomenal singer, his vocal range is incredible! I’ve seen a lot of bands live, but he was on another level with bands like Faith No More and Tomahawk. I haven’t seen any of his other musical acts live, but have seen footage of their live events, he just commands your attention and is so charismatic, often chaotic and so damn fun to watch. Freddy Mercury is one of the reasons I don’t outright say Patton is the absolute best. He has all those same traits and exceptional voice. There are others in that category, some sort of fell off over the course of their respective careers, but Patton still delivers consistently.

@@tpadgett2 Phil I fear is quite underrated! Every band he’s been in, it’s had its own identity, but still keeps that incredible feeling to it’s music because he’s front and centre. Him joining Pantera is where they really started to shine and with great reason! He was just born to perform on stage, as a singer! Dude is so talented and goes like crazy at gigs! He’s insane to watch.

Guy gets a lot of recognition. The reason why he's a little less known is because he just LOVES unconventional singing. He could be far more famous doing generic, crowd-pleasing pop or rock. But he loves playing around with his voice in odd, bizarre, frequently jarring ways. But hey, those of us who love that kinda shit REALLY love him. I'd take a Mr. Bungle album over just about anything out today.

Mondo Cane is a great suggestion. Personally, Mr. Bungle is far and away my favorite. But unfortunately, most of their live recordings are utter trash in terms of sound quality.
Mike Patton is a god! When Faith No More came out, I was strickly a Death Metal and Industrial listener. I heard them and Mike Patton 's vocals and was completely blown away. I have been a huge fan ever since.
Faith No More is one of the greatest and most unique bands ever, and Mike Patton is a vocal beast and incredibly creative. It's criminal how they're not nearly as popular today as they were in the 90s. Two of their best songs IMO are "The Real Thing" and "Zombie Eaters".

I was also working a very early FNM show and got to see Mike doing his pre show vocal exercises which consisted of just singing the alphabet and then growling the alphabet. It was fascinating.

I remember reading somewhere that Mike Patton has a *recorded* vocal range of 6 octaves, which blew my mind at the time. I saw Faith No More for the first time when I was 19 at a festival in Western Sydney, Australia. We waited all day to see them in 95F heat, no shade, in a dust bowl. Conditions were horrible, half our group had to leave with heat stroke. Mike came on stage, acknowledged that he knew it’d been a rough trot, and THANKED EVERYONE FOR STAYING TO SEE THEM, as if Faith No More aren’t absolute legends and absolute freaks in terms of talent. He thanked us the way opening bands thank people for turning up early. It warmed my heart. And their set was incredible. Check out his Mr Bungle project! Finally!!! Mike Patton. Probably one of the greatest and most versatile known singers of all time. His vocal work will astound any singer in any genre, and to top it all off he also voices the craziest scary video game monsters as well. Elizabeth, I haven't said this to you (or any other reactor) since Dimash but "you've only seen a small percentage of what this guy can do." Knowing that you're someone who geeks out over vocalists who get creative and playful with the sounds they make with their voices, I truly, honestly hope you continue deeper into the Mike Patton rabbit hole because I don't know if there's another singer on the planet who is as creative, inventive, or makes as many weird sounds as Mike Patton does. He has so many projects in so many styles and, while some of them hang around familiar vocal territory (with his own creative twists, of course), others involve him pushing voice into directions far beyond anything anyone else is doing. I absolutely love Faith No More but, tbh, it's one of his more restrained projects. As much as you enjoyed what he was doing on this song, it's a bit like you listened to Eddie Van Halen strum a few chords and said, "Wow, he's a really good guitarist!" without ever having heard him play a lead or solo. The further out you go on the branches of Mike Patton's tree, the more you'll realize the dude is an artist - not just a musical artist but a capital-A "Artist" - and voice is his medium. He has some amazing projects where he's done things like cover classic Italian pop songs with a full orchestra, crazy vocals with a math metal band, lounge music, hip-hop, hard rock, etc. but he's also done noise jazz with people like John Zorn and Merzbow, entire albums of vocalise themed as "a soundtrack to a comic book" or movies, weird atmospheric stuff with Bjork, the unrestrained craziness of his first (and recurring) band, Mr. Bungle, and even several albums of what can only be called "vocal collage" comprised of songs/themes created completely from crazy sound effects made with his mouth. And the creativity isn't just confined to the way he uses his voice. If you see him with bands such as Fantomas, Tomahawk, Mr. Bungle, etc., you'll often see him with multiple mics plugged into a console that he's constantly manipulating, bullhorns, gas masks with mics inside them, CB radio mics, etc, etc, etc, all chosen for different sound qualities and textures and he'll switch freely between them many times over the course of any given song (and often within a single verse or chorus). Dude is on a completely different level. I know "Epic" is probably next in the pipeline for you (which is a fun song but a much more one-dimensional Mike Patton) but, afterward, I'd urge you to check out some Mr. Bungle as a next step into what Mike Patton does.
Cannot upvote this comment enough. Nails it as far as what Mike is capable of and how he's truly an artist. I know Epic is probably coming next and it kind of makes me sad because he was purposefully limiting his voice on that entire album. It's an okay song...but like John says, it's akin to Eddie Van Halen strumming the guitar when he plugs in to make sure the amp is on.

I think you’d enjoy his version of The Bee Gees “I Started a Joke”. There’s a pretty good live from I wanna say Brazil or somewhere like that. But my absolute favorite is the live version of “Just a Man” in Italy with the young choir girls singing background.
I Started A Joke is one of the most amazing vocal performances of all-time, for many reasons. It's also a rare glimpse into the raw talent of Patton, who spent most of his time screaming like a chimpanzee on acid. Which almost anyone can do.

I'm Gen X, and I'll say he's up there, but we also had Perry Ferrell, Billy Corgan, Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell (way up there), Henry Rollins and too many other greats that deserve there place as representative of the great music of that time.

I couldn't click fast enough when I saw you analyzing Faith No More. They're my all time favorite band and Mike Patton is a big part of that. Something so cool about this band is that they largely reinvented their sound with each album. They're a super flexible band with a super flexible vocalist.

Came here to suggest Mr. Bungle and fantomas. Saw him live in Atlanta back about 23 years now. Small venue and he was sitting at the bar next to me for a bit before he went on so I got to awkwardly tell him that I think is a musical genius. 🤩
Yay! You're going to have fun exploring his work. What I'm most amazed about regarding Mike Patton is how he hasn't ruined his voice yet doing all the crazy things he does with it, but it goes to show he knows what he's doing.
It would be a pleasure to get an interview with someone as fun, eclectic and smart as Mike. Probably one of the most versatile artists and singers out there.
Mike Patton took an incredibly diverse range of influences (Godflesh, Sade, John Zorn, Treponem Pal, The Commodores, Napalm Death) and jumped headfirst into the mainstream. You don't see that kind of thing these days.
You are confusing the timeline, Treponem Pal, Napalm Death, and especially Godflesh are all bands that were unknown before Patton joined Faith No More. Justin Broadrick was a guitar player in Napalme Death (their first record was from 87), and later formed Godflesh, now most of his work is solo, and recognizes Faith No more as a big influence in Godflesh. Treponem Pal is labeled as industrial, with their first record being from 1989 ... a year after Patton joins Faith No More.
@@darkWolf354 You read me wrong, I'm not stating he didn't influence those bands, but that he was certainly influenced by them and promoted them whenever he could, along with the other members of FNM, giving them major exposure. (How well Napalm Death were known before 89-90? Well, we were certainly listening to them here in Australia!)
@@wearethenightparty I think we have different definitions for influence and reference, for me influence is something you can clearly spot in an artists sound - like Enya on Devin Townsend's sound, and a reference like Johny Cash that many artists appreciate but are very far from reflecting Cash's sound in their work.
The best vocalist of our time without a doubt. I have seen him live with Mr. Bungle and Fantomas. Nothing compares. Maynard from tool is fantastic, but Mike Patton is something completely special, a-one-in-a-generation vocalist.

@@MJAussie360 Midlife Crisis combines a lot of the cool stuff he does. It’s a good showcase of his range of techniques, if not his pitch range (though it’s still pretty impressive). It’s hard to capture all of MP in one song.
FNM is one of those bands that I appreciate more and more as I grow older. When I think that I have them figured out, I listen to them some more and discover yet another layer I hadn't yet discovered.
Same here, I started listening to them in 1990, and they been with me ever since, among with tons of other bands, but they have always been my "go to" band if I wanted to listen to something that is just awesome! The older I get, the more I enjoy them!
Mike is an incredible vocalist with a huge range, both note-wise and sound-wise. 'Evidence' and 'The Real Thing' are great ones to check out as well, or 'Ugly In The Morning' for something a bit more extreme :)

I especially enjoy seeing you listen because when something is interesting you listen deeply and it shows on your face. I can only imagine what Mike Patton means to a person like yourself who can more appreciate his technical ability.
Billy Gould's bass tone even in this relatively old clip... so envious. His tone for this song at a more recent Pink Pop Festival gig... wow. And Mike... I've heard of him having a 5 octave range. Just tremendous skill in wielding all his abilities. One of the VERY best vocalists of past 30 yrs.
I saw FNM when I was 18 and so was Mike. I am 55 now and he remains favourite singer to this day. What he can do is mind blowing. His bands FNM, Mondo Cane, Mr Bungle, and so many more all different

Undoubtedly one of the greatest vocalists of all time purely because of his ridiculous versatility. He can cover Lionel Richie's "Easy Like Sunday Morning" and sound smooth & dreamy but also crank out something like "Surprise You're Dead!"...and everything in between.
Mike put out an album in 2010 called Mondo Cane where he covered 1950s Italian songs. Full orchestra, backing vocals. Very operatic. Highly recommend for a vocal analysis.

He's only 25 in this performance. His voice keeps growing as he ages. It's unbelievable. Faith No More is still one of the best bands I've ever seen live. Mike Patton lost none of his voice or grit.

I grew up with Mike in Eureka in the late 70s and 80s. He was my brother's best friend, and my best friends were Mr. Bungle drummer Jed Watts and guitarist Trey Spruance. This guy is amazing in his range and switching from growling to screaming to singing, just something fantastic with him. I hope he's feeling better these days.

I remember being 13 in 1993 and talking to someone who went to HS with Mike Patton. I was spending time near Arcata that summer. I was hugely into FNM at that point and had heard of Mr Bungle but had not yet gotten into them. I ended up seeing Mr Bungle in concert in Portland in 1999.
@@jirikurto3859 All of the guys in patton world are awesome, I remember buying a load of merch off dead cross bassist Justin Pearson's 3 one g records website and he emailed me a few days later making sure that I wanted the stuff and didn't order it by accident/drunken spending spree, and he's always been cool every time I've run into him at shows so much respect for how they treat people.
Mr.Bungle are some fucking mad ass musicians lol, I covered squeeze me Macaroni for one of my finals on the bass guitar when I was studying music and the teachers didn't know what to do with it lol. Sent the audience nuts though, there's a lot of love for them in the UK.
My favorite thing about Mike is that he's used his wealth and fame to support independent artists on his own label. Ipecac doesn't see a lot of cash flow, but he keeps going with it because the artists get real exposure through him. My second favorite thing about him is, he would never brag about that.
Mr. Bungle had to break up due to money issues after Anthony Kiedis got them kicked off of pretty much all of the tours they were scheduled for. Makes sense he'd want to have a label where weird (in a good way) bands can do their thing without major label whims screwing them.

MIke Patton is the best rabbit hole you are going to love falling down. There are so many bands and genres... Mr Bungle is My personal fave but you could do a year's worth of episodes just to cover the basics of the expansive Patton universe.
Mike is just unbeatable as a vocalist. A true throat monster. I think Mr. Bungle's California showcase his talent the most and people should not miss his work with The Dillinger Escape Plan and Dead Cross as well.

Faith No More is the weirdest band. None of their songs really sound the same, they switch genres even within the same song sometimes never mind across an entire album, but you know it's them within the first two bars, well before the vocal kicks in. This is one of the main reasons they're my favourite rock band. They're far too diverse to fit in a box yet every track has you thinking "Oh that's so FNM".

@m.l.b.2908 initially as a teen I was thrown off by Angel dust - but as I grew more attentive musically through the years- (and being a long time fan of FNM-) I think what made them mainstreamy was their high impact bright (epic) tones mixed with the tribal beats and the complementary darker/foreboding undertones of their music. When they broke- "rap -rock" (aerosmith) and funk- rock" (rhcp, living color)were being infused into the mainstream. With Mike's sharp percussive nature- and that amazing band - I think they caught the reigns of that horse and rode it...Mr bungle was watching:)
Faith No More's Angel Dust album is a masterpiece and is easily one of the best rock albums of all time. I highly recommend giving it a solid listen a few times over.

The song Caffeine (also off the same album) was written during an experiment in sleep deprivation. He’s also clean as they come. No drugs at all because they can hurt his voice. He views his voice as an instrument.
I don't think being an alcoholic is "clean as they come", and the drug alcohol will definitely harm a singer's voice.

He definitely at least drinks. I have drank wine literally right next to him at the counter at Oliveto in Berkeley some years back when it was still open. He's good friends with Chef Paul Canales who now runs Duende in Oakland but used to be the executive chef at Oliveto.

"Angel Dust" is, by far, my favorite album of theirs. "Small Victory" has some of craziest vocal and instrumental acrobatics that you'll ever hear crammed into a radio-length song.
Me as well, I absolutely love this album, so many layers, never gets old.
If you like truly unique music, "angel Dust" has to be on your top rock/punk/metal albums list. Its beautiful, disgusting and crazy all rolled into one.

Christ... Its universally understood what a pure talent the man is, that the band was in its prime, but its difficult to remember exactly what a miracle Mike Patton really is from mere recollection alone. When you hear him in real time, its just fucking incredible, there are very few vocalists (aside from chris cornell etc) that cause that awe delivery so consistently. He STILL at it too! What a career, what an odd fellow, truely unique!
Unfortunately, it’s not universally understood how great he is. The mainstream just seems to refuse to acknowledge him.

Air-Conditioned Nightmare has some of the best range to me. Starts out high, immediately goes into a mix of high and low vocals, then you've got his great backing "bop bops", back into the high notes, then down into a middle - you get the picture.
Can't wait for this reaction! Mike has a ridiculous vocal range! You should check out tracks like "Evidence", "A Small Victory", "Last Cup Of Sorrow", "The Real Thing"...just for starters! Amazing live as well, he doesn't sing anything "album perfect", he has always preferred to "feel the moment" and just do whatever he feels like doing in the moment as for him it's about the performance and show rather than "oh, we could just hit play on the cd and you'd never know..."

Shamelessy I was one of those folks who only knew FMM due to their hit song Epic. A few years ago I decided to give the band a proper listen and never looked back and will go so far to say that Epic is far from being the best FNM song.

I'm so happy you got to Mike Patton. One of the most "out there" creative minds I've witnessed in music, across all of his projects.
I absolutely love Mike Patton in every band he's been in. The range, the attitude, the presence on stage! Potentially the best frontman of all time!

Me and a couple of my friends did a legitimate 3 day weekend of no sleep, just pure objective research on trying to decide, definitively, who is the greatest front man of all time. We called it a tie between Mike and Freddie Mercury. That was prob more of a respect thing than an objective fact, but how could you expect us to stick to the rules, we'd been up for 3 days, drinking, sniffing things and jamming to music all weekend. lol.
It really is a tough call between those 2. Had Axel Rose not derailed he could have been in the Convo. Scott Wieland same thing. Patton has done it for decades though, and over such a range of vocal demands.
And just to clarify, our point (and I think yours, too) is greatest FRONT MAN not just best singer.
@@tpadgett2 right, definitely what I mean is frontman. He’s such a phenomenal singer, his vocal range is incredible! I’ve seen a lot of bands live, but he was on another level with bands like Faith No More and Tomahawk.
I haven’t seen any of his other musical acts live, but have seen footage of their live events, he just commands your attention and is so charismatic, often chaotic and so damn fun to watch.
Freddy Mercury is one of the reasons I don’t outright say Patton is the absolute best. He has all those same traits and exceptional voice. There are others in that category, some sort of fell off over the course of their respective careers, but Patton still delivers consistently.
@@RealKillerKevill fully agree with everything you said. Another guy, that somehow gets overlooked a lot, that I believe deserves to be in the conversation at least, is Phil Anselmo. I've seen him live with Pantera, Down, and Superjoint Ritual. He was a monster every time
@@tpadgett2 Phil I fear is quite underrated! Every band he’s been in, it’s had its own identity, but still keeps that incredible feeling to it’s music because he’s front and centre. Him joining Pantera is where they really started to shine and with great reason! He was just born to perform on stage, as a singer! Dude is so talented and goes like crazy at gigs! He’s insane to watch.
The first time I ever heard Faith No More was when I heard their cover of War Pigs by Black Sabbath, absolutely blown away!

Guy gets a lot of recognition. The reason why he's a little less known is because he just LOVES unconventional singing. He could be far more famous doing generic, crowd-pleasing pop or rock. But he loves playing around with his voice in odd, bizarre, frequently jarring ways. But hey, those of us who love that kinda shit REALLY love him. I'd take a Mr. Bungle album over just about anything out today.

He truly is amazing.

Mondo Cane is a great suggestion. Personally, Mr. Bungle is far and away my favorite. But unfortunately, most of their live recordings are utter trash in terms of sound quality.

Mike Patton is a god! When Faith No More came out, I was strickly a Death Metal and Industrial listener. I heard them and Mike Patton 's vocals and was completely blown away. I have been a huge fan ever since.
Faith No More is one of the greatest and most unique bands ever, and Mike Patton is a vocal beast and incredibly creative. It's criminal how they're not nearly as popular today as they were in the 90s. Two of their best songs IMO are "The Real Thing" and "Zombie Eaters".

I think it was an Ozzfest maybe , maybe not,lol, but Ozzy played his set w Bordin on drums and it was the first go round for Sabbath reunion w out Bill Ward and Bordin played that set also. 2 sets in a row Bordin a literal BEAST
I was also working a very early FNM show and got to see Mike doing his pre show vocal exercises which consisted of just singing the alphabet and then growling the alphabet. It was fascinating.

I remember reading somewhere that Mike Patton has a *recorded* vocal range of 6 octaves, which blew my mind at the time.
I saw Faith No More for the first time when I was 19 at a festival in Western Sydney, Australia. We waited all day to see them in 95F heat, no shade, in a dust bowl. Conditions were horrible, half our group had to leave with heat stroke. Mike came on stage, acknowledged that he knew it’d been a rough trot, and THANKED EVERYONE FOR STAYING TO SEE THEM, as if Faith No More aren’t absolute legends and absolute freaks in terms of talent. He thanked us the way opening bands thank people for turning up early. It warmed my heart. And their set was incredible.

Finally!!! Mike Patton. Probably one of the greatest and most versatile known singers of all time. His vocal work will astound any singer in any genre, and to top it all off he also voices the craziest scary video game monsters as well. Yesssss!! Finally! I've been waiting for you to do Mike Patton for a long time. He is amazing and one of the most incredible vocalists and my favourite artist of all time. He has such a huge range and a massive repetoire of music to choose from.
Elizabeth, I haven't said this to you (or any other reactor) since Dimash but "you've only seen a small percentage of what this guy can do." Knowing that you're someone who geeks out over vocalists who get creative and playful with the sounds they make with their voices, I truly, honestly hope you continue deeper into the Mike Patton rabbit hole because I don't know if there's another singer on the planet who is as creative, inventive, or makes as many weird sounds as Mike Patton does. He has so many projects in so many styles and, while some of them hang around familiar vocal territory (with his own creative twists, of course), others involve him pushing voice into directions far beyond anything anyone else is doing.
I absolutely love Faith No More but, tbh, it's one of his more restrained projects. As much as you enjoyed what he was doing on this song, it's a bit like you listened to Eddie Van Halen strum a few chords and said, "Wow, he's a really good guitarist!" without ever having heard him play a lead or solo. The further out you go on the branches of Mike Patton's tree, the more you'll realize the dude is an artist - not just a musical artist but a capital-A "Artist" - and voice is his medium.
He has some amazing projects where he's done things like cover classic Italian pop songs with a full orchestra, crazy vocals with a math metal band, lounge music, hip-hop, hard rock, etc. but he's also done noise jazz with people like John Zorn and Merzbow, entire albums of vocalise themed as "a soundtrack to a comic book" or movies, weird atmospheric stuff with Bjork, the unrestrained craziness of his first (and recurring) band, Mr. Bungle, and even several albums of what can only be called "vocal collage" comprised of songs/themes created completely from crazy sound effects made with his mouth.
And the creativity isn't just confined to the way he uses his voice. If you see him with bands such as Fantomas, Tomahawk, Mr. Bungle, etc., you'll often see him with multiple mics plugged into a console that he's constantly manipulating, bullhorns, gas masks with mics inside them, CB radio mics, etc, etc, etc, all chosen for different sound qualities and textures and he'll switch freely between them many times over the course of any given song (and often within a single verse or chorus). Dude is on a completely different level.
I know "Epic" is probably next in the pipeline for you (which is a fun song but a much more one-dimensional Mike Patton) but, afterward, I'd urge you to check out some Mr. Bungle as a next step into what Mike Patton does.

Cannot upvote this comment enough. Nails it as far as what Mike is capable of and how he's truly an artist. I know Epic is probably coming next and it kind of makes me sad because he was purposefully limiting his voice on that entire album. It's an okay song...but like John says, it's akin to Eddie Van Halen strumming the guitar when he plugs in to make sure the amp is on.

Patton was experimenting with sleep deprivation when they wrote the album Angel Dust. You should listen to the whole thing, it’s a masterpiece of originality
I think you’d enjoy his version of The Bee Gees “I Started a Joke”. There’s a pretty good live from I wanna say Brazil or somewhere like that.
But my absolute favorite is the live version of “Just a Man” in Italy with the young choir girls singing background.
I Started A Joke is one of the most amazing vocal performances of all-time, for many reasons.
It's also a rare glimpse into the raw talent of Patton, who spent most of his time screaming like a chimpanzee on acid. Which almost anyone can do.

I'm Gen X, and I'll say he's up there, but we also had Perry Ferrell, Billy Corgan, Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell (way up there), Henry Rollins and too many other greats that deserve there place as representative of the great music of that time.

I couldn't click fast enough when I saw you analyzing Faith No More. They're my all time favorite band and Mike Patton is a big part of that. Something so cool about this band is that they largely reinvented their sound with each album. They're a super flexible band with a super flexible vocalist.

Came here to suggest Mr. Bungle and fantomas. Saw him live in Atlanta back about 23 years now. Small venue and he was sitting at the bar next to me for a bit before he went on so I got to awkwardly tell him that I think is a musical genius. 🤩

Mike Patton took an incredibly diverse range of influences (Godflesh, Sade, John Zorn, Treponem Pal, The Commodores, Napalm Death) and jumped headfirst into the mainstream. You don't see that kind of thing these days.

You are confusing the timeline, Treponem Pal, Napalm Death, and especially Godflesh are all bands that were unknown before Patton joined Faith No More.
Justin Broadrick was a guitar player in Napalme Death (their first record was from 87), and later formed Godflesh, now most of his work is solo, and recognizes Faith No more as a big influence in Godflesh.
Treponem Pal is labeled as industrial, with their first record being from 1989 ... a year after Patton joins Faith No More.
@@darkWolf354 You read me wrong, I'm not stating he didn't influence those bands, but that he was certainly influenced by them and promoted them whenever he could, along with the other members of FNM, giving them major exposure. (How well Napalm Death were known before 89-90? Well, we were certainly listening to them here in Australia!)
@@wearethenightparty I think we have different definitions for influence and reference, for me influence is something you can clearly spot in an artists sound - like Enya on Devin Townsend's sound, and a reference like Johny Cash that many artists appreciate but are very far from reflecting Cash's sound in their work.
The best vocalist of our time without a doubt. I have seen him live with Mr. Bungle and Fantomas. Nothing compares. Maynard from tool is fantastic, but Mike Patton is something completely special, a-one-in-a-generation vocalist.

@@MJAussie360 Midlife Crisis combines a lot of the cool stuff he does. It’s a good showcase of his range of techniques, if not his pitch range (though it’s still pretty impressive). It’s hard to capture all of MP in one song.

FNM is one of those bands that I appreciate more and more as I grow older. When I think that I have them figured out, I listen to them some more and discover yet another layer I hadn't yet discovered.
Same here, I started listening to them in 1990, and they been with me ever since, among with tons of other bands, but they have always been my "go to" band if I wanted to listen to something that is just awesome! The older I get, the more I enjoy them!
I'ld recommend the whole "King for a day, Fool for a lifetime" album. So many vocal stylings there.

Billy Gould's bass tone even in this relatively old clip... so envious. His tone for this song at a more recent Pink Pop Festival gig... wow. And Mike... I've heard of him having a 5 octave range. Just tremendous skill in wielding all his abilities. One of the VERY best vocalists of past 30 yrs.
