Mike Patton is one of the best frontmen ever. His vocal range and performances are all over the place. I had a friend who saw them in London's Brixton Academy in the late 80s and he said that he was a bundle of energy all through the show, at one point singing an entire song doing pushups...... Patton is an enigma to say the least.

Jut to be pedantic, that was in 1990. I saw them on this tour, got to meet Mike and talk about music because he saw my Napalm Death jumper as was impressed someone in Australia had the top I had! We got talking for a bit and he actually got called onto stage for being a little late! haha.

    • @johnplaysgames3120
      @johnplaysgames3120 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

I've seen Mike a bunch of times with FNM, Mr. Bungle, and Fantomas. Every show has been different and amazing, but Mike was definitely that "bundle of energy" you mentioned. Especially in the Bungle shows.
One of my favorite memories of Mr. Bungle is from the first time I saw them. I'd never heard a Mr. Bungle song before and had no idea what kind of music they played. I just knew the name from Mike's shirt in the "Epic" video and read somewhere that it was his band from high school. When they came to my town in SoCal, I went into the show having no idea what to expect, and it was just nuts from beginning to end, including the "Welcome Back, Kotter" theme song being sung in both English and Spanish, a cover of Billy Squier's "The Stroke" but at like half speed (or less) with super harsh vocals, etc.
But the part that always stuck with me the most is the final song of the night. They played it pretty much all the way through and then, at one point, hit a chord and the entire band just froze onstage. They let their instruments keep ringing out and, almost immediately, the guitar started feeding back on itself. Still, the band stayed frozen in place like statues. At first, the crowd was cheering and laughing and having a great time, feeling like they were in on a fun little joke. Several minutes of growing, horrible feedback later, the crowd started getting uncomfortable, uncertain, etc. A few minutes of continued feedback and frozen bandmembers after that, the crowd started turning on them, shouting insults, throwing things, etc. A few minutes after that, the crowd came back around and started laughing and cheering at the audacity. A couple minutes after that, the guitarist (who was wearing a rubber monster mask, a frilly tuxedo jacket, and boxer shorts with his pants around his ankles) fell over like a tipped statue, the drummer and bassist left the stage, and Mike Patton suddenly launched himself through the center of the drumkit. And that was the end of the show.
It was a fascinating experience and the first and only time I've ever seen a song where the audience was the instrument being played by the band. It was genius and changed how I viewed art and music forever afterward.

He has a project called Mondo Cane where he sings 50's & 60's Italian pop songs with a full orchestra and backing band. It's so great even though I don't understand Italian. He has a lot of REALLY weird music which I love, but it is not for everyone. Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, Fantomas are some of his other bands. There's a new live recording of "My Ass Is On Fire" that is pretty good quality. He's just amazing. I got to see him live once in like 91 or 92, with Mr Bungle and he was wearing a darth vader mask (or some kind of mask, my brain is a little hazy) and I was bummed because his expressions are so great to watch. He's also done some voice acting for games, where when you hear it you gotta think he was probably the only one who could play the part (The darkness f.ex.).

I’m so so glad you finally did a video for Mike Patton! he’s without a doubt one of the most talented vocalists out there. and he’s got a very wide discography to choose from!
    songs worth checking out:
Cuckoo for Caca has some of his best screams (and he hits some insane notes)
Just a Man has some of his best gospel singing, and every live performance of that song has something off the wall happen, as a bonus.
alternatively, My A$$ is on Fire (mr bungle) has some really great range of his vocals as well, i had the pleasure of hearing it live a few weeks ago and it was incredible.

Mike Patton is by far one of the best and most diverse male vocalists of all time. He has the mind-blowing natural ability to mimic pretty much any singer (male or female) from any genre of music. And it all seems to come so easily to him. He’s said in interviews that the reason he shouts and screams so much on stage is because he gets bored so easily with singing in his more conventional styles.
Wait till you hear his high-pitched falsetto. He’s just as good as Prince - if not better. And can go from that to singing like Pavarotti in seconds. Please do more Mike Patton (he has numerous other bands, side-projects and collaborations too). 😃

I went to Faith No More concert back in the early 90s and they sang the Hershey's Alpine White theme at the concert. That haunting melody and then Mike came in with "Creamy White....dreamy white....." I laughed so hard - it's just an indication of what hams these guys cane be too. LOL The concert was so powerful and it was a great experience. Glad you had a chance to hear this and love the commentary!

Mike Patton is probably the most diverse vocalist out there. He's done hundreds of projects, and they're all wildly different. And as you've seen, he can switch genres and styles mid song. It's a shame that there aren't more good live clips out there of him. But if you want to see the extent of his range there are a few things you could check out.
I would recommend the studio version of "Goodbye Sober Day" by Mr. Bungle, the version of "This Guy's in Love with You" from the BBC1 Faith No More Session, and some of the live Mondo Cane concerts.

I had already listened to The Real Thing, but this was something so new and entirely fresh. The two Mike Patton albums I will suggest for you are Mondo cane (in Italian) and Corpse Flower with Jean-Claude Vannier (French and English). He does pop music on these two. Plus check out Fantomas the Director's Cut - which even has a live album - as well as Mr. Bungle's California, and their live album The Nigh They Came Home.

As lots of other people here are commenting, it's hard to get a sense of what Mike Patton does with one song. Or even one project. Besides Faith No More, he's got seemingly endless side projects, guest spots, etc. in every genre you can think of. Wanna hear some funk metal? Listen to early Faith No More. Want jazzy circus metal? Check out Mike in the band he started in high school (and still plays with today), Mr. Bungle. Looking to hear some classic Italian pop songs (sung in Italian) from a decade when your grandmother was young? Check out Mike's "Mondo Cane" project (especially the live shows with orchestra). Hankering for some experimental vocalise over atmospheric instruments that serves as the soundtrack for a comic book? Try Mike with one of his supergroups, Fantomas. Math metal? Mike did an album with Dillinger Escape Plan. Noise jazz? Mike worked with Japanese noise artist, Merzbow, and has done many shows and albums with John Zorn. Poppy rap/hip-hop? Mike's got a project for that too: Peeping Tom. Straight-up rock with another supergroup? Tomahawk. Mellow love songs? Mike Patton with Lovage. Wordless vocal experiments and sound effects with no instruments? Mike did several albums with just his voice and a tape recorder, such as "Adult Themes For Voice." Interested in seeing just Mike and a beatboxer making music? Try any of his songs with Rahzel. And the list just goes on and on and on. For real, I don't think TH-cam comments allow enough characters to list all of Mike Patton's side projects.
The man has a 6 octave range and a thousand different voices, textures, techniques, etc. It's legit crazy what he can do with his voice. Heck, he's even done monster sounds and fx for video games, movies, etc. The vampire creatures in that Will Smith movie, "I Am Legend"? Mike Patton.
If you want to get a good sense of Mike Patton's voice, I personally would suggest sampling from a couple of the bands I mentioned above. Here are a few that I think give you a broader spectrum of what he does:
    - "CAROUSEL" - Mr. Bungle. I'd suggest the album version for this one to get the most vocal bang for your buck. John Zorn produced this and the layers are crazy. Plus I think you'll appreciate some of the vocal tricks that are going on here.
    - "AIR CONDITIONED NIGHTMARE" - Mr. Bungle. th-cam.com/video/J4rqXqpLCZ0/w-d-xo.html If you prefer a live performance. Also, while "Carousel" was from their debut album and has more of a jazzy circus metal vibe, "Air Conditioned Nightmare" is from a later album that was Mr. Bungle's take on The Beach Boys (each of their album's is themed) and so has a very different sound to it.
    - "DEEP DEEP DOWN" - Mike Patton, from the "Mondo Cane" album. This live performance is a good one: th-cam.com/video/zaUrzMeS4xg/w-d-xo.html
    - "GOD HATES A COWARD" by Tomahawk. There's a great live version here: th-cam.com/video/0aA5NxTujqg/w-d-xo.html What's great about this performance is you get to see Mike doing something he does a lot, and that's use a bunch of different mics during a song (as well as one mic that will surprise you), each one for a specific voice or sound. Plus, as a vocal coach, I think you'll enjoy getting to see a really great example of a relaxed tongue in at least one of the close-ups. That being said, my favorite song from this performance is...
    - "FLASHBACK." th-cam.com/video/qvCX4zjp6Lc/w-d-xo.html You don't get the surprising mic or the relaxed tongue, but, of the two, I prefer this song. Both are really great performances though.
    - "PIG LATIN" - Dillinger Escape Plan. Again, this is one where I'd suggest the album version to get the full vibe of it.
    - "CAFFEINE" - Faith No More. If you want to stick with FNM, this is one of the best songs off one of their best albums (imo) and gives you a few Mike Patton textures to sink your teeth into. There are a couple of good live versions out there (though, in the best one, he steps on the mic cord at the big moment of the song, causing him to accidentally drop the mic at the final note) but the album version is still what I'd recommend here. If you need a live, though, I'm sure we can find you a good one.
A lot of people here will probably suggest Faith No More's cover of the Commodores' song, "Easy." Personally, I don't think that's a great one to get a feel for Mike's voice. It's fine... but it's basically just a karaoke version of "Easy." Unlike most of the rest of FNM's catalog, they didn't do anything interesting with it and pretty much played it note for note. It's just a straight cover that's well done and everything, but is so similar to the original that, imo, it's kind of redundant. And, like many covers, as good as it is, the original is still better. Just my take on that one. On the other hand, maybe you want to chase the audience a little (because views = more algo love) and "Easy" is Faith No More's biggest hit outside of their first single with Mike Patton as their vocalist, "Epic." Unfortunately, this is one of those cases where the most popular songs that crossed over to mainstream success are also the ones that showcase only one very narrow aspect of his vocals and are probably fine for views but not so great for actually learning much about Mike's voice, the creativity with which he uses it, or about him as an artist. Ymmv.
