  • I have heard a lot of noise about Glenn Danzig for a few years now, and how I absolutely have to check out his voice. Well, the time has come, and I was pleasantly surprised! The mix of clean and harsh vocals throughout, with his intense aggression made for quite an interesting experience!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Danzig for the first time, performing "Mother”.

The song is about censorship of art. Back when people (mothers who got in a group together) wanted to ban certain art and ended up with the "compromise" of the parental advice button you can still find on records. This is Glenns message to these parents.

Holy crap...I've been suggesting this for two years! I'm a bit too young to have seen the original Misfits back in the day (they were a hugely influential horror punk band), but I caught Glenn and the boys opening for Slayer in Cleveland on their first tour in '88. I'm so stoked for this....

Doyle still looks like he could beat someone senseless...the '86 self-titled release is a sort of a twenty, best of, hits compilation and covers a lot of the high points of Glenn's time in The Misfits. His band Samhain was really a migration from The Misfits into Danzig and had a revolving door policy with members until Chuck Biscuits finally joined Glenn, John Christ, and Eerie Von and changed the bands name. Cool shit...

Glen Danzig- Evil Elvis, as he’s sometimes called. It’s actually not a misnomer: he’s said in print that singers such as Elvis and Jim Morrison have been huge influences on his vocal and performance style. The band’s type of metal is definitely considered bluesy. The subtext of the song is maybe a touch unique: apparently he wrote the lyrics as a response to the formation of the PMRC, which implemented the Parental Advisory stickers on music releases. He’s also given lesser known bands some exposure, having toured with The Electric Hellfire Club, and Lacuna Coil before they broke big. The man himself is said to be 5’ 4” tall, but of course from this video he’s not a guy to mess with.

You'll want to do a reaction to "How the Gods Kill" from his Danzig III: How the Gods Kill Album from 1992. Probably the peak of his vocal powers. To be noted that he was the originator of the legendary punk group The Misfits, and experimental goth rock/punk/metal hybrid Samhain prior to forming the more blues metal/hard rock band Danzig. Essentially these bands morphed into one another as his musicianship/songwriting improved as did his choices in bandmates. His vocal technique is rooted in his love for Elvis, The Doors, Roy Orbison, Albert King, the delta blues, not just the artist Howlin' Wolf, and all the sell your soul folklore and voodoo the blues carries, but the actual howls of wolves. Put that in a pot with Black Sabbath and you got Danzig. Of interest to newcomers such as yourself is that Danzig has composed 2 original classical instrumental albums (Black Aria I and II), released an album of Elvis covers, and wrote a song each for both Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash that were up there with their best work. But back to the point - How the Gods Kill or Devil's Plaything from 1990's "Lucifuge." You will not be disappointed.

As far as the meaning/backstory of the song. In an interview with Big Brother magazine, Danzig offered a rare explanation of his lyrics, claiming the inspiration for "Mother" was Tipper Gore, who as a member of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) pushed for regulations on music she felt was harmful to children. As a result, the record industry agreed to place warning stickers on albums with explicit content.
"I wrote 'Mother' about he PMRC and parents who tell their kids what to listen to. Parents should guide their children, not live their lives for them. Kids should discover life on their own."

Prior to this band, Glenn Danzig was a founding member of the horror punk band The Misfits from 1977-1983 (surely you’ve seen people wearing T-shirt’s with the giant Misfits skull on them). After that, he started the horror punk/gothic rock band Samhain from 1983/84-1986. In 1986/87, hoping to take the band in a rock/metal direction, Samhain’s guitarist was changed and then the drummer as well. Around the same time, Glenn Danzig changed the band’s name to Danzig, so that regardless of any future personal changes, there would be the appearance of continuity.

My first impression of Danzig's singing, many years ago, was that he sounded like Jim Morrison had discovered metal.

Jim Morrison was a total fake. Google search term: "WEIRD TIMES IN LAUREL CANYON" (or similar).
      Danzig's $hit hot, esp. on Lucifuge & 4.

I saw Danzig live with Doyle. They had a Danzig, misfits and samhain on their setlist. Awesome show. I will never forget it because now I don't think Glenn really appreciates cameras recording them while playing live. He pointed up at me while I was recording from the balcony. I felt on the spot so I put it down immediately. Then he threw some horns at me. It was a "just live the moment, kid. Have fun." kind of thing. Been living since.

I saw him with Doyle in Seattle way back was so good. I was crowd surfing and he reached his hand out to me. Was like that painting of the guy touching fingers with God. But security ripped me away 😢
I met Doyle once. Die is way too chill 😂

I understand not wanting to be filmed. I think it's horribly rude if you're at a concert. That said, as much as I like his voice, he's a total fuckin' prick. His music is great (especially with the Misfits), but he's just an angry little meathead. Basically, great artist, complete douche of a human being.

My first boyfriend introduced me to Danzig back in 1993. Being more of a jazz/blues girl, I wasn't a fan of many of the bands he was into, but "Mother" quickly became one of my favorites, so I was amazed how you pointed out that his voice is sort of jazzy/smokey. Maybe that's why I really liked this song.

  • @fretless05

The tones and energy he builds in his delivery is really fitting for the lyrics of this song. It's as if he starts with a conversation with parents that builds to a challenge, an argument.

There are videos of the obscenity hearing featuring the Gores. Musicians from many genres testified against the PMRC including Dee Snider (from Twisted Sister), Frank Zappa, and John Denver. All of them outclassed and destroyed the stuffy politicians arguments including John Denver (Who was running late for a meeting with NASA).
