This song was actually written in response to Tipper Gore and her crusade to censor music. So she is actually the titular "Mother". It just makes the song and the lyrics bang so much harder.

Glenn Danzig modeled his vocal style after 3 of his heroes: Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley, and Roy Orbison. Once you know that, you can hear it everywhere in all of his songs.

As far as the meaning/backstory of the song. In an interview with Big Brother magazine, Danzig offered a rare explanation of his lyrics, claiming the inspiration for "Mother" was Tipper Gore, who as a member of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) pushed for regulations on music she felt was harmful to children. As a result, the record industry agreed to place warning stickers on albums with explicit content.
"I wrote 'Mother' about he PMRC and parents who tell their kids what to listen to. Parents should guide their children, not live their lives for them. Kids should discover life on their own."

Prior to this band, Glenn Danzig was a founding member of the horror punk band The Misfits from 1977-1983 (surely you’ve seen people wearing T-shirt’s with the giant Misfits skull on them). After that, he started the horror punk/gothic rock band Samhain from 1983/84-1986. In 1986/87, hoping to take the band in a rock/metal direction, Samhain’s guitarist was changed and then the drummer as well. Around the same time, Glenn Danzig changed the band’s name to Danzig, so that regardless of any future personal changes, there would be the appearance of continuity.

You'll want to do a reaction to "How the Gods Kill" from his Danzig III: How the Gods Kill Album from 1992. Probably the peak of his vocal powers. To be noted that he was the originator of the legendary punk group The Misfits, and experimental goth rock/punk/metal hybrid Samhain prior to forming the more blues metal/hard rock band Danzig. Essentially these bands morphed into one another as his musicianship/songwriting improved as did his choices in bandmates. His vocal technique is rooted in his love for Elvis, The Doors, Roy Orbison, Albert King, the delta blues, not just the artist Howlin' Wolf, and all the sell your soul folklore and voodoo the blues carries, but the actual howls of wolves. Put that in a pot with Black Sabbath and you got Danzig. Of interest to newcomers such as yourself is that Danzig has composed 2 original classical instrumental albums (Black Aria I and II), released an album of Elvis covers, and wrote a song each for both Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash that were up there with their best work. But back to the point - How the Gods Kill or Devil's Plaything from 1990's "Lucifuge." You will not be disappointed.

They are the reason we had “Parental Advisory” stickers on Tapes and CD’s. Which, as a teenager, just told which CD’s I should definitely listen to. 😂 😂😂 You should definitely listen to The Misfits now. That’s what Glenn Danzig is famous for. Then he gets much more aggressive, direct and confrontational with the father, even taunting him and challenging him. Playing on each parent's fears and worries at the same time but in the most effective way per parent.

At the same time though Danzig is known to have satanic tones and the terms "Mother and Father" is routed in biblical statements. People usually pray to the "Mother of the Holy Spirit" in Catholicism and the Father is in reference to God himself. The song can be seen as a song about a man telling off parents or it can be seen as "I'm evil incarnate and I'm telling you bluntly I'm not going to bow down and I'm going to show your daughter my evil tonight." Regardless, song freaking rocks.

Been a Danzig fan all of my life. As a few others have stated you need to listen to ...How The Gods Kill and Blood and Tears for his vocal range. Glenn is a huge Elvis fan and he def used Elvis as inspiration in his delivery. Glenn has a very powerful voice and is one of my Favorite Metal and Punk singers. His early ion life Punk Band The Misfits is one of the most popular Punk Bands of all time. He was a teenager at the time and wrote most all the material. The Song Skulls would be a good place to start with the Misfits.

This is just one of those songs that hits so hard... I'm thinking about covering this in my 90's grunge/punk band. We don't do many covers but the energy on this just undeniable. The way my voice is it lends itself to the Danzig/pearljam deeper base pitch with a clean note carry release... not sure that's the right word for it as I've never took voice lessons, but I'm sure you can get my point

This song encapsulates a time when big theatrical songs wasn't always the answer to good music. Danzing showed you could take a simple song (hell the bass player only had 3 notes to play) perform it like it's going to be your only hit and ride the wave. Miss those days.

I'm glad you got around to analyzing Glenn and explaining his vocal ability. The first three Danzig albums are some of the best in the blues metal genre. Every time I watch this video, i chuckle at the memory of the first time my Mom stopped and watched it. When it ended, she looked at me and said "Good grief! He's sweaty and I'm just going to refer to him as 'His Sweatiness' from now on!'" She likes very little metal from my educating her on it and Danzig is one of the bands she really likes for the bluesy and heavy groove in addition to Glenn's voice.

The joke about the Misfits in the 80’s was that there were more Misfits T-Shirts, probably 10-1 than albums the band had ever sold in their whole career, so most likely a large number of people wearing the T-shirts never even heard the band.
I still have trouble understanding how that happened, other than they had great T-shirt designs or rebellious status symbol?

Misfits and Danzig perfectly capture the intensity of my youth. I lived in the raw, gritty world he describes in Mother, perhaps a bit too long, but I wouldn't trade a second of it. It's a legendary anthem that resonates deeply with those of us who embraced that dark, chaotic energy.

I freaking LOVE Danzig. Glad you're finally getting to him. His style is so different. This song is about parents not understanding their kid's music, which is something a lot of us grew up with. The line that goes, "Father, do you want to bang heads with me? Do you want to feel everything?" he's not really wanting to "bang heads" against the father, he wants to know if the father wants to come head bang at a concert with him and "feel everything". He's basically saying, "you don't understand this music, so come to the show and find out."
