The N64 has a very special place in my heat. My parents bought my Super Nintendo (my first console) for me , but I had to save up myself to buy my N64. The day I had finally saved enough and bought my N64 and Mario 64 is still one of the favorite days of my life. I miss thoses summers of playing local multiplayer with my friends.
Never knew Itoi named the N64. God bless that man. He created not only the best JRPG series of all time, but also named one of the best consoles of all time.
"Super Excellent 64" "Super Exellent Station" "Super Excellent Saturn" Those all sound like Bootleg Famiclones based off of the consoles they're trying to imitate.
This has been one of the best episodes in DYKG history. No filler, pure information. Every other contributor to this series should take note; especially the ones who love to waste time in between takes with shoehorned footage.
Idk, I think Super Nintendo had a better library. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of great memories playing local multiplayer on N64 and it has one of the best video games of all time: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. When it comes to the quality, quantity, and diversity of the overall library though, I think SNES and PS1 have better libraries.
Ahhh, I immensely enjoyed my N64 in it's era. So many games bought, rented and generally enjoyed with friends. Nothing more to say. Just a wonderful console for my middle school and high school years
I still can't believe it's been 20 years since the 64 was released in the states. I still remember my excitement when I got the 64 and Mario Kart. Ah, memories.
The N64 was the biggest step up in console graphics as a kid seeing it for the first time it just completely blew away the systems before it. I can't imagine the additional fidelity and content the system would have had with a disc drive. Full voiced games, long cutscenes, high resolution textures, larger maps and game worlds. Man that would have been something.
0:05 that legitimately gave me a heart attack since I use Planet Popstar as my alarm clock song and I thought I was dreaming or some shit. Like jesus christ I jumped out of my seat...
I can't believe I'm somehow still finding out new details about Factor 5 that impress me. A shame that such a talented group got screwed over so badly.
Funny of cartridges where considered obsolete back in the late 90's and how there's even more space on "cartridges" than Blu-Ray these days. How the tables have turned. :)
High enough capacity cartridges using flash memory are comparatively more expensive than the triple layer 128GB UltraHD BluRay format though. A 128 GB SD Card from a reputable manufacturer costs more and has too few advantages to overcome the cost difference. I don't know how much capacity Nintendo Switch cartridges have, but PS4 and Xbox One both regularly have 50+ GB games on single BluRay discs. There is one more issue, SD cards' Flash Memory comes in many speeds. SD cards with Equivalent read speeds to BluRay cost comparatively more than cheap SD cards do.
I've finally beaten Super Mario 64 by defeating Bowser and getting every star. I already want to play that game some more. I want a longer remake of Mario 64. It should still have the polygonal graphics though, because it gives the game nostalgic charm.
It was Sega of Japan executives who declined on the Silicon Graphics partnership, not Sega engineers. Kalinske and much of Sega of America were furious at Sega of Japan for doing this
Cartridges were ultimately a bad idea, but seemed like a good idea at the time. I'm really, seriously impressed about the compressed audio/visual tricks. It showed that despite the format, N64 carts could pack quite a punch!
I think we should be thankful Nintendo chose cartridges for N64... I don't think games like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Conker, Turok would never be possible in CD Rom.
They wouldn't have had the same processor as the N64, why would Sega sign a contract that would allow outsourcing their console hardware to competitors?
Yes, and do you think Sega would license it in a way that would allow Nintendo to also license it? Think hard before answering, keep in mind the fierce competition between the 2 companies too.
My friend got an n64 for Christmas and being able to go anywhere in a 3d world blew my mind. Even though they couldn't make a cylindrical object or sphere.
My youth! My parents would get my 3 sisters and I one big gift on Christmas every year, that we would always open last. Christmas 1996 it was Nintendo 64. With it we got Mario 64 and Waverace 64, and some extra controllers. The best present ever! Those two games are the most nostalgic things ever for me. Just seeing their menus or hearing their soundtrack makes me swell up. I can't tell you how many hours we spent playing the N64 and all its multiplayer games. Wouldn't trade those memories for anything.
Wow!!!!! I had NO idea about the Netscape stuff, that is SO interesting! So, back in the day, I didn't have a Netscape account, but I DID have a Juno account. Were they owned by the same people? I seem to remember that for some reason
I never had an N64 growing up, but at the same time I feel like I didn't miss much? I played Zelda OoT, Smash, Mario 64. Are there any other games I should go back and play?
Steam Punk Their first video literally has "old" at the end of the title to signify that some of its information is out of date; DYKG's previously done this sort of thing with their _Banjo Kazooie_ video.
I agree with Nintendo about optical disc technology. I hated the loading times, the fact that the drives typically failed within three years, and how fragile the discs were. Unfortunately, the third party developers were lazy and wanted gobs of space so they could plop anything onto the disc they wanted. So in my opinion, Nintendo made a better decision for the customer, but third-party developers punished them for it. It was basically, "Oh no, that's not going to cut it. You WILL put up with all the disadvantages of discs, or you don't get the game. You're not going to make us cut stuff from games to fit them on a cartridge. You don't like loading times or fragile optical media? Tough, that's all we're willing to develop for because we're lazy and tired of dealing with cartridges." In general, it seems like as third-party developers get more control over the market, the more anti-consumer companies have to be in order to survive. You get unfinished games that need patches to work, a console that has to update itself, and DLC. I don't like all the power being in the hands of developers who don't necessarily have the consumer's best interests in mind. I see cheap optical media as the first step down the path of consoles just becoming really crappy PCs that have all the downsides of a computer with none of the advantages. Compare that to the SNES or N64, where there's no operating system, no loading times, no bull... you plug in the game, you play, and that's it. A device like that can be better than a gaming PC if you're in a hurry and don't want to wait around for something to "think" about loading up. But now, I could pretty much boot Windows 10 and login to Steam in the time it takes a console to boot a game.
Felix The Fukboi yeah a lot has happened since then, Metal Jesus acquired a US 64 DD console which people didn't even know existed until then for one thing
Maxwell Stein I still remember magazine previews regarding Nintendo 64 DD and all the launch titles and coming titles back then. many people have known about it and it's been talked in select gaming forums for years, metaljesus only popularized the knowledge.
niespeludo I think you misunderstand. Nobody knew a US model existed in the wild. There are quite a few Japanese models. This is the ONLY US model that anyone is known to have in the entire world as it was never released in the US

Juan Sanchez mario does not have multiplayer
Marcos Calderon Lol I meant when I got other games. I played the N64 for a long time after I initially got it. I still have it to this day.
+Juan Sanchez Did you ever "blow-clean" the cart or do it the "proper" way and use q-tips and (I think) vegetable oil?
max damon Vegetable oil? Rubbing alcohol works best.
I always just blew into the cartridge and hoped for the best. Blowing actually does practically nothing, but it always seemed to work lol
Never knew Itoi named the N64. God bless that man. He created not only the best JRPG series of all time, but also named one of the best consoles of all time.
I love the N64, especially that Kirby music being played in this video.
No matter much time passes, the Kirby 64 music always has the same effect on me.
I'd buy a car if it was called "Super Excellent Sedan"
"Super Excellent 64"
"Super Exellent Station"
"Super Excellent Saturn"
Those all sound like Bootleg Famiclones based off of the consoles they're trying to imitate.
DD
*before even watching the video yet* ...I bet the n64 DD will be mentioned at least a billion times.
Funnily enough it wasn't mentioned until the last third of the video.
Adam Crawford NO DUHH
they mention it whenever they can
Adam Crawford your count is off it was 1 billion + 1

My Nintendo 64 was killed in the war.
What war?
Mike Bushnell No
The Console War.
Goose Boose and mine died in Vietnam
*Vietam like flashbacks intensifies*
Video has Kirby music but STILL NO KIRBY PART 2.
Still, imagine what the Nintendo 64 would have been like if it used CD-ROM games.
Adresadini if Wii u could actually run ffxv
Maybe foreshadowing?
You already can play N64 games online using Project64k or Mupen64k and the kaillera client
+The 64th Shadow I don't think that's what he meant?
Nintendo would've decimated the competition, honestly.
So I guess playstation fans should be glad it didn't use CDs...
Did You Know?
We want Metroid for Switch?
Get ready for Metroid Prime: Federation Force Director's Cut for the Switch
Cedars I want a HD remake of all 3 Earthbound games for Switch.
Commander_Ninja Metroid Pinball: Flipper Switch
Cedars and a proper yoshi game that isnt made for babies
Cedars ALSO A PROPER KIRBY GAME NOT MADE FOR BABIES
*hits that blunt* I remember when we had Rareware on our team
This has been one of the best episodes in DYKG history. No filler, pure information. Every other contributor to this series should take note; especially the ones who love to waste time in between takes with shoehorned footage.
I got really happy when the Kirby music started 😂
It's truly amazing how close things would be different if not for a last minute decision.
N64 will forever be my favorite old-school system. People always rave about the NES and others, but N64 had the best games in my opinion.
N64 has a solid lineup but tbh some of it's titles aged horribly
Idk, I think Super Nintendo had a better library. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of great memories playing local multiplayer on N64 and it has one of the best video games of all time: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Retro Hero 276 I agree, as a N64 collector and as much as I love GoldenEye 007, the graphics kinda suck now.
"sedans or whatever" is the most brutalmoose phrase ever, and i'm incredibly glad he got to read it in this episode.

I always loved how Pokemon Puzzle League had that cutscenes. It's still my favorite Puzzle Game to this date.

I have never seen that footage of the N64 DD. Super cool! Thanks DYKG and BrutalMoose!
2:04 ive heard the term egghead before but ya boi brings it to a new level

Right when I saw Marc Andreesen, I had to make an eggcelent joke about it.
The N64 was first console ever! I still remember playing Mario Kart 64, the first game I played on it.
Awesome! My Birthday was yesterday, and I just picked up an N64! Great timing!
I still have my N64 and it still works flawlessly keeping it for 50+ more years
YASSS this video has been needed for a while now!

2:04 Snooping As Usual i see...
How very fitting to get this awesome video now. I've been building up my N64 hardcopy library recently and playing classic N64 games.
My all time favorite console.
Nintendo 64 is the epitome of my childhood. Got it on my 10th birthday and fell in love with the system
Yay secret dykg videos!
Secret? Were did you find it?
Probably unlisted in a playlist.
Kaviar for the first few hours since this video went live, if you went to the old n64 DYKG video, there would be a link to this video
I don't get it XD
Kratos Aurion Plays in the other N64 fact video, there was a link to this video, and at the time it was unlisted, but now it's public
I can't believe I'm somehow still finding out new details about Factor 5 that impress me. A shame that such a talented group got screwed over so badly.

Hold up! Nintendo had a hand in getting the internet to boom! That is awesome on so many levels.
Funny thing though those cartridges for the most part still work perfectly today but the early disc games are almost impossible to play anymore
YTP Nintendo Swiss Parental Trolls.

Always love when DYKG shows BrutalMoose some love
I think we should be thankful Nintendo chose cartridges for N64... I don't think games like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Conker, Turok would never be possible in CD Rom.
You're right, Turok 2 is the ultimate Proof than Cartridges are way more powerful than cds.
Interesting. I remember being super hyped for the 64DD and wishing they would hurry up and release it in the US.

"Who are you calling Pinhead!?"
Funny, I was just reading on the Nintendo 64 yesterday and already knew most of the facts presented here.
There was a time when Nintendo wanted to make sure their fans has something to play on their console!? Now that's just quaint
Yeah but the N64 launch was very sparse and there was a long time after launch where nothing released on the system.
My 64 has gone thru some hard times during the years and still works
who the F says "hoover" when it comes to a vacuum cleaner...

I love this type of content, please keep it up!

TheSonicNinja Things got so bad that it took Atlus to fix their shit years later.
Having the same processor as the n64 wouldnt have made their system sell better..
They wouldn't have had the same processor as the N64, why would Sega sign a contract that would allow outsourcing their console hardware to competitors?
+Nicholas Steel you idiot if you watched the video they just said the company that made n64's processor offered it to sega first
Yes, and do you think Sega would license it in a way that would allow Nintendo to also license it? Think hard before answering, keep in mind the fierce competition between the 2 companies too.
It's official now, I think Shigesato Itoi is a genius.
