when I was young, I got a GameBoy. I had a friend who had a GameGear.
At first, I was amazed with the GameGear. But then I realized that it took more batteries and lasted far less. I knew that my parents would never buy that many batteries so I completely lost interest in it.
Even now, I am sure that battery life is what made the GameBoy a huge success.
IKR? We have a Game Boy & Game Gear. We would always play the Game Gear with an AC adapter and we rarely did that with the Game Boy.
Pokemon did alot to help that
Let's not forget the crappy-quality screen on the game gear. Sure it was impressive at the time, but go look at it now..
The game boy and the DS both last with their batteries, they have aged beautifully.
@@BerserkJeffy When I was really young, I thought that all bubble screens were CRT monitors, so for a long time I thought the Game Gear was a portable CRT. I realized I was not far off when I found my old one.
I remembered the gameboy advance. I used to watch Spongebob Squarepants on it; those were the days!!
@ABYNAX DBR there were video cartridges, I had shrek movies, ninja turtles (2003) episodes, fairly odd parents, etc.
The Handheld are my main option because of portability, so my favorite consoles when I was a kid. Incredible worlds in the palm of my hand :3
All that foresight in regards to the Gameboy Advance Hardware.
Yet it wasn't back-lit.
I think some later models may have been back lit. I own a front lit model.

@@stewartcrislip7274 Yes the AGS-101 model has an lcd backlit screen, they're more expensive but it makes games look much clear

first, the SP was backlit
then, the ags-101(the v2, basically) was given an even brighter light

Not all GBA SP models are back lit.
Makes sense having LGR do the last bit because the Virtual Boy is definitely oddware.

imagine if they released a Switch: Legacy console with support for switch carts, N3DS and 3DS carts, DS carts, and GB/GBA carts. It would outsell anything they’ve ever made, probably.
and now, the 3ds is one of the biggest homebrew beast around, compatible with GB, GBA, DS, 3DS, PS1, N64.

@@paulgilbert5278 yes. Games like Quake III run just fine on it. For reference, the N3DS systems have roughly the power of a GameCube.
I have such a connection with Nintendo handhelds. I really wish they'd go back to stuff like the GBA, especially if they brought back the Pokemon pixel style

I think it’s ridiculous how Nintendo made the GameBoy Light in Japan and when they were creating the GBA they were like, “Should we implement a screen that can actually be seen without imploding people’s eyeballs with a backlight like in the GBL? Nah. Let’s fuck over everyone who wants to play.”

The GB line is honestly legendary. I was born in 97 but I got a bunch of my older cousins hand me downs and one of them was an original gameboy and what seemed like a million games. I learned how to read at an early age out of spite because I couldn’t beat Pokémon yellow
All this forethought into the Gameboy Advance. All this detailed planed to the tiniest detail. And yet it didn't have backlight or a headphone jack. Sure, let me try to watch Pokemon on a public school bus while holding the system super close to hear, and hoping I got good lighting.
The original had a headphone jack. I believe maybe you’re mixing it up with the SP? Still the lack of a backlight was pretty silly

@@early90smf90 Well, to rephrase, it's weird that the OG didn't have a backlight and the sp didn't have a headphone jack. Both just seem like intentional design flaws.

Wow. What are the odds. Was surprised when I heard of the borthday start up sound. So I turned on my ds lite and it made that sound. Its not my bday and never bothered checking what the bday setting was on it. Just so happen to be set on Dec 14. Blew my mind
Nintendo handhelds have been my go to for years starting with the GBA and have always loved their design and form factor.
ngl these hour long videos really makes it easier for me to sleep and as I don't need to frequently search for a new dykg video. instead I can just keep this 1 hour video running in the background.

Honestly nothing can replace dedicated gaming hardware. Gaming on my phone sucks with out buttons. I know you can buy a controller but it makes everything clunky and unwieldy. A gameboy or any of the devices can just be pulled out and turned on. My note 10+ < gameboy advance

I never had an gameboy (gb, gbc, gba...) when I was a child, but getting older I got to play many of the excelent gameboy games like Pokemon Crystal, Minish Cap, Pokemon Fire Red, Crash Bandicoot... and now I'm back to it, played Metroid Zero Mission recently and now playing Metroid Fusion. The gameboy games made such a difference in my life and watching the B roll for this compilation with ads, promotional material and footage from this era makes my heart warm. Thanks for all your work researching and bringing this all together for the community. Cheers from Brazil!

I remember as a kid, me and friends theorized that the Nintendo DS was short for Dual screen or drawing system (cause of the stylus) but Developer System!?!?! That makes it sounds like a dev kit. I know that wasn't the only shortening meaning for DS but still.

Nintendo handhelds were my favourite consoles to play with i had way more hours in handheld zelda games than in home console ones... Nice video i remember many good things.
I have to say, I prefer Nintendo’s handheld consoles than their home consoles by a little bit. The game quality just had this charm, especially when it came to the GBA and it’s beautiful graphics. I’m happy the Switch is both a handheld and home console since they could merge the philosophies of both consoles, making games that are not only enjoyable, but also easy to pick up and play.
Never knew you did these big combo videos before, handhelds from Nintendo have been my largest thing going on over 20 years now. Enjoyed this, much I knew, even found a few I did not. I'm one of those ambassadors, yet by now I really wish they had gifted out those GBA games to others as eshop purchases over time, but hey...exclusivity weeeee...

I feel like you skipped the gameboy advance add on to the gamecube and its adapter cable enabling the use of the advance as a controller for the gamecube ie final fantasy crystal Chronicles where you could use it a map

I still cant get over why they chose to call it "DS" for Developer System instead of Dual Screen. Like jeez you could of had an amazing setup. And the 3DS could of been called the Three Dimentional Screen

I remember in high school, we'd have Tetris tournaments during breaks and we even had a leaderboard in the classroom. Also, I still have my DS Lite on hand for the occasional Chrono Trigger.
gameboy advance is my first handheld console and playing a link to the past on it opened the world of gaming for, me thanks for the trivias!

I am the younger brother of the family so my brother had the GB and GB Color, and I had to wait unit the GBA and OMG what an amazing portable, literally a Snes Portable (missing two buttons but still rocks).
