  • Instant release is a glitch where Mario both dives into a grabbable object and drops that object on the same frame. This causes the object to be released before the HOLP even updates, and so the object appears at the previous HOLP. You see, normally while holding an object, the HOLP updates on every frame to the position of the thing that Mario's holding. When Mario releases it, that object appears at the HOLP, causing it to see like it came out of Mario's hands. With instant release, we grab and release the object before the HOLP updates at all, and so the object appears wherever we left the HOLP last.
    Not all methods of dropping can be used for instant release. Specifically, the only methods that will work are diving into a wall, diving into out of bounds, diving into a ceiling, and landing with big fall damage. No other method of dropping will work.
    Instant release requires diving, and so it can't be used on clones, since cloning involves grabbing (not diving). Furthermore, instant release is a type of drop, and so the released object will appear laterally at the HOLP but at Mario's current height. Thus, instant release is actually pretty restrictive. For example, if we wanted to release a goomba clone or fire clone high up at a specific point in space, instant release could not be used (for two separate reasons).

    (3) For some shots in this video, like when a box fell from really high while grabbing Hoot and when chuckya fell from really high, I used hacks to place those things really high up. That was simply the easiest way to test those things. So don't look too much into how I set up those shots.
    (4) I said that diving into an object while sliding on the ground doesn't work with instant release. I tested this more thoroughly than the shot I showed during this statement. Specifically, I tested having a wall appear inside of Mario as he slid into the object, and it still didn't work.
    (5) In additional to bonking and big fall damage, instant release can also happen during a big fall into snow/sand.

    Can you explain how amp transportation works? I've seen you mention it, but I'm wondering if it's possible to move the amp near the spot where the bob-omb got stuck at the end of the video. If this can be done, then you can let it hit you (which I know causes Mario to blink, unlike fire) and drop it while in the pause-buffered hitstun, allowing you to move the bomb higher. Or you could just use instant release to raise both bob-ombs and do a pause-buffered hitstun using one bomb in that spot, right?

      Ok forget the amp, but in your Releasing Objects video you say that if you drop a bob-omb out of bounds then the failsafe mechanism will activate when Mario is within 4000 units of the bomb. So, if you were to preserve the HOLP using a pause-buffered hitstun, which you could do if you brought 2 bob-ombs to the spot you showed at the end of the video, then you could pick up and drop the other bob-omb.
      As for making the bob-omb explode, that's actually more difficult that I previously thought, since you can't agro the bomb and you also can't pick up the bomb without updating the HOLP. Nonetheless, I have an overcomplicated plan.
      1. When you first arrive to TTC, instant release both bob-ombs on the wall, but do it in a way that one bomb is released slightly higher than the other.
      2. Since the bombs are at slightly different heights, you can activate the failsafe of one bomb a little bit before the other. Now, use the firespitter to explode the bomb in front of the other on Mario in such a way that Mario's blinking effect will be prolonged for as long as possible, in other words, position Mario such that his "I took damage" animation is as long as possible.
      3. Using the pause-buffered hitstun technique, pick up the other bob-omb so that its fuse gets activated, and quickly fall off of the mesh and ground pound just below the spot where you instant release the second bomb in the video.
      4. Make the exploded bomb respawn, and do the 2 instant releases like you did in the video.
      5. Climb up TTC to the spot you got stuck in the video. Now, activate the failsafe of the bomb without the fuse, then activate the failsafe of the bomb with the fuse as late as possible. Wait for the bomb to explode on Mario, then use the period of pause-buffered hitstun to pick up the other bomb and drop it, which if this works will be outside of his sphere.
      Hopefully I didn't miss anything in this plan, if I did, I trust in your abilities to fill in the gaps :P

    You can carry the bob omb away from the HOLP with the hat in hand glitch (which does not update the HOLP), however you can't do it in TTC because there are no cap blocks or any ways to lose your cap.

    This is sort of off topic, but I was thinking about it today. I know I have wondered and some others have wondered what you'll do if you beat the ABC. I know there are times where I sort of hope you DON'T beat it because I don't want to not have update videos to look forward to. I love hearing about new things you discover and stuff like that. But one day you'll either beat it or find out it can't be beat. Then there won't be anymore videos on it.
    But earlier, I was thinking about Super Mario 74 (not sure why really). And it got me thinking. SM64 mods should still have all the same tricks, right? It's the same engine, I don't see a reason they wouldn't. Maybe some one could correct me if I'm wrong. But, is that something you'd consider doing? An ABC for something like SM74 or Star Road? I know I can't get enough of this stuff. But if you just want to be done with this is over, I completely understand.

      Sato He would still have a general idea of whether or not certain stars would theoretically be possible with 0 A presses. For example, there's a star in SM74 that requires a long series of wall kicks. Actually there's many like that. Lugmillord would know better than I would if anything in these levels would make it possible to do these stars with no A presses.

      Not necessarily. They do not design the levels with that in mind nor ponder it. They probably can't even think of all the different possible tricks to save A presses at once, only someone like Pannenkoek could really know after checking the levels out themselves.
      That being said, since rom hacks are usually more difficult than SM64 itself, A presses will undoubtedly be more common in most levels since there are often long gaps or heights needed to get each star.

    I have a question about cannons. How do they work? I assume that when you are inside the cannon, and you press A to fire Mario, the game increases Mario's momentum tremendously and sends him hurtling in the direction you chose. So I'm wondering if there is a way to obtain/trigger the cannon's momentum, without going in the cannon.
    I doubt that this is possible, but hey... I haven't seen this idea anywhere else! Might as well try anything and everything we can!

      I believe being launched from a cannon would be considered more like a sliding dash in this video, in that it doesn't work. From what I figure, this glitch only works when performing the 1st frame of the dive and then hitting the object and the wall on the same frame, but it seems the object gets priority (Demostrated in Poles and such, since those have more priority then the object I assume)

      2. Mario would use the crazy box normally.

      If you grabbed it before it hit the ground, then it would just be normal. If you grabbed it right as it hit the ground, you would end up holding a fake crazy box. Mario would do the jumping animation but no coins would appear when he lands

      Theoretically yes. But in the cast of TTC, there's no way to place the HOLP out of bounds far away from the course while inside the course

      In the video, the bob-omb at the end clearly didn't have a lit fuse. A supersaturated bob-omb wouldn't do much better.

    Is it possible to instant release 2 objects in the same HOLP area? Not at the same time mind you, rather if you instant released both bom-omps in the TTC spawn area, would they both spring back to you at the same time so long as both their spheres were in range?

    When the bob-omb is away from its home, does it walk around at random? It looked like it was going in circles.
    I guess pressing Z on the same frame Mario grabs an object does nothing?

      It just walks towards its home, which involves turning in circles once it reaches its home laterally. However, sometimes it switches from clockwise to counterclockwise (or vice versa) after the first circle, simply due to ending up on the other side of its home after completing the first full circle

    When the object goes out of bounds it isn't just sitting there on the other side of the wall, correct? What's really happening is the object goes to the HOLP after an instant release which means that the origin of the objects activation radius changes with it, right? I think I'm starting to get this.

    When you demonstrated diving into out of bounds, does the game actually treat that differently than diving into a wall? Seemed a bit odd to make the distinction if it's essentially an invisible wall.

      They are different. I really should have waited until after the wall/floor/ceiling video to post this one, but I just keep putting that video off because it's not very fun. In fact, there are a couple videos I can't make yet simply because they require the wall/floor/ceiling as a prerequisite

    If you do an instant release before holding any objects normally, what happens? Does the object disappear, go to some sort of default HOLP that's set when you start the game, or something else?

      HOLP is an acronym for "Held Object's Last Position." It's a point in 3D space that represents the last place an object was rendered in Mario's hands. It's used to determine where an object that Mario's holding should appear when he drops or throws it.
      However, if the object is never rendered in Mario's hands before being released (such as with the hat in hand glitch, or with instant release), the game will instead use an old value for the HOLP to determine its position, which can be somewhere entirely different from where Mario is.
      Specifically, if Mario throws an object, it'll appear at the HOLP, offset by 32 units horizontally in whichever direction Mario is facing. If he drops the object, it will appear at the HOLP laterally (horizontally), but at Mario's current height.
