Sound Effect Clones

  • Some objects spawn a sound effect object when they are destroyed. This sound effect object is invisible and only lasts for a couple seconds before unloading, and during that time it makes its sound. If we clone the sound effect object and release it before it makes its sound, we can effectively silence the sound. In the video, I show the before and after for releasing several different sound effect objects.
    There are many things that don't make sound effect objects even though they make sound. For example, King Whomp's death, the monkey cage breaking, collecting a red coin, and activating the red coin star don't make sound effect objects. Separately, King Bob-omb does make a sound effect object, but we can't release it during a cutscene, so I couldn't show that. Finally, for some sound effect objects, like killing lakitu or fly guy, releasing the sound effect object barely affected the sound, and so I didn't include them.

      Digital devices can't play sounds over 0 decibels. (Silence is -Infinity decibels)

      groszak1 what the fuck are you talking about? Silence is 0db and digital devices obviously can produce sounds higher than 0db, since 0db is no sound.

      Decibels are defined as a ratio between the pressure of the sound waves compared to the ambient pressure of the air the sound waves pass through. Because of this, you can have sounds waves that have less pressure than the surrounding air. (Thus resulting in negative decibels.)
      Now for digital signal processing, 0db means something else entirely. It is the maximum volume you can achieve before having your audio get messed up on an analog or 16-bit system and has nothing to do with actual real life loudness.

      You can only clone objects that can load while you are holding a fake object. So any object that only loads at the start of a level is unclonable (except in WDW and DDD, where you can clone anything since there's a loading point)

      I'd guess he did it once by accident, looked into the files to see what happened, and then figured out what caused it and how to duplicate the effect more generally.

    1:19 This is NOT the case in the original Japanese version, but does happen in the Shindou Edition, which has the star in the box like in all other versions. Super Mario 64 DS is more like the original Japanese version.

    I want to know why the Bob-Ombs by the maze in RR sometimes make no smoke noise and why pausing during certain frames of a long jump, etc. re-pitches Mario's "yahoo!" noise.

      From my experience, some enemy sounds can drown out other enemy sounds. For example, a flame thrower's sound can cancel out a bob-omb's fuse sound, and so can lakitu's siren sound. I don't know the exact details/rules since I never figured it to have any practical uses

      To be honest, when you presented that invisible objects don't update the HOLP and that this might be used to remotely release objects I thought that it wasn't all that interesting since the only invisible cloneable objects I knew were chain chomp's pivot and the box spawner, but sound effects are way more common even in courses that don't have hat-in-hand. If we can find a better way to bridge that 1 frame between cloning and releasing then it might actually be useful. Of course, since sound effect objects unload pretty fast, making sure that nothing else loads in that spot would probably be incredibly tedious.

      Sound effect objects are invisible and thus don't update the HOLP. So everything I said in my HOLP Preservation video about invisible objects would apply to sound effect objects

      It is one big object, but cannot be cloned since it's loaded from when you enter the course. Same applies to chain chomp's gate.

      pannenkeok2012 That is what they seem to do, but why wouldn't Nintendo just make the enemy/object make the sound itself? I'm guessing objects, when they disappear, will stop making their sound unless a seprate object is spawned to do it?

    Could you clone the jingle when you uncover a star or the one when you find a secret?

      As for the star jingle, probably not, since Mario can't grab, drop or throw anything while in his star animation. However in Whomp's Fortress on the star "Blast Away the Wall", you can slightly clip into the wall and get the star without breaking the wall first. For whatever reason the star jingle gets cut out, leaving Mario in silence. (Maybe because of the star not being rendered properly when collected?)
      As for the secret, probably yes, because a secret is an object that unload when touched, and therefore must create an object to play the sound effect.

      +Lightning_Force Huh. I saw in one of his videos when he had the object visualizer that Mario was in one of the slots, that's why I thought somehow it maybe could be done.
