HOLP Preservation using Invisible Clones, Being Off Camera, & Hitstun

  • I show the new HOLP technology that I've been working on, as I basically walk you through my research from that past few weeks. Here's a quick index:

    I can actually think of one use for this. You have 99 coins, preset a HOLP, and use the hitstun to remotely place a coin clone so you can activate the star virtually anywhere you want, and make new use of that star dance clip ;)

      A similar trick was used in TTC, wherupon the pause-buffered hitstun method was used to transport bob-ombs higher than usual, allowing for a stardance clip. Unfortunately it's no better than instant-release, but it appears to be more versatile.

    This is simply godlike thinking. There's really nothing that you can't figure out man, I bet you know more about how this game works than most of the people working on it did back in the day.
    Have you ever thought about following a career on testing software, because you could totally become a big figure. Everytime I need to create a test for any software I'll think about what would you do.

    I found a camera behavior that could potentially be exploited. When you're close enough to the goal pole for the koopa race the camera focuses on the point between Mario and the pole, so Mario doesn't have to be on screen. Tested in Bob-omb battlefield.

      Where Mario is in a state of visible and invisible at the same time (updating and not updating the HOLP at the same time) and when you observe him he's set to one or the other.

      ***** Technically that would be a Quantized PU, not a Quantum PU. Quantum (in reference to an area) implies superposition, while quantized describes discrete units (what you described). In the case which you described, Mario begins acting like a subatomic particle needing more and more energy to enter higher and higher quantum states the farther he goes from the origin.

    At 6:45 what object are you holding before you clone the coin? I don't know what there is in TTM that would work for that, other than maybe a sound effect clone.

    Um.... Neat. I love your videos. I'm confused about this one. I'm normally confused about them. I don't even play this game so.... But I enjoy them a lot. So what is the use of avoiding HOLP updates? I'm sure I learned this from some video of yours, but I can't remember what video.

      faceshed A thrown ibject is released at the holp. So if you throw one without the holp being at mario, you can make it appear other places.

    How does pause buffering work on enemys? For example, in the case of the mystery goomba, if you pause buffered, could you make it stay in place as you moved one frame at a time or something?

      Very few things rely on the global timer. I don't believe goombas do

    When the game pauses, it shows a really zoomed-out view of the course. If Mario and the object he is holding are visible in the zoomed-out picture when the game's paused, why doesn't the HOLP update?

      Ethan White probably because while they are visible, they are not being rendered. the game most likely uses an image of the course instead of rendering it all in 3d

      +skeeth It is being rendered in 3D; you can tell because certain animations, like bowser and the penguins blinking, still happen when the game is paused.

      You can't release anything while you are paused, so the creators saw no reason to update the Holp within pause frames.

    It's so weird to me how the HOLP updates based on where the object is being rendered. You'd think it'd be the other way around, but nope. If Mario's holding an object but it's not being rendered, the HOLP doesn't update.

    Most games determine if an object potentially invisible and won't be rendered, a process called clipping, by at the very least checking if an object's bounding box is neither inside nor intersects the view frustum. Just because you can't see Mario, like in those cases where you couldn't see Mario on screen but the HOLP was updating, the bounding box is still still inside the view frustum and can be seen, meaning the game thinks he is on-screen and Mario gets rendered.
    It can be overridden using view occlusion or portals, which basically won't render an object if it is behind another object, but Mario 64 doesn't have vis occlusion nor view portals, hence why you can be behind walls but Mario still gets rendered and the HOLP updates.

    How do I get the XYZ coordinates to show up in a rom? Is it doable in Project 64, or do I need another emulator?

      You can just use a 3rd party program to see the coordinates, such as MHS or CheatEngine

      Held Object's Last Position. The game usually updates this as you hold an object and move, so it can determine where it spawns when you throw it, but there are a lot of interesting ways & effects involved with having it not update. Like say, telling the HOLPs to be in a nice diagonal line so you can pick up and release Goomba clones to make a sort of Goomba staircase! (pannenkoek uses that strategy in one of his A press challenge vids)

    You're wrong at 1:57. You do clone the coin but in a premature state (you can see the coin doesn't spawn in the usual spot). You actually made a video about that more than two years ago: th-cam.com/video/ebARfEYGBEc/w-d-xo.html
    But still, pause buffered hitstuns, that's AMAZING. I would never have thought of using the hitstun invisibility like that.
    I still feel like being off camera still has more potential than you gave it credit for, though. I mean I don't know why it happened but as I explained in a comment in your HOLP Doesn't Update when Mario's Far from the Camera video I tried it and a goomba clone appeared something like 400 units to the side of where he should've spawned.

    Also, I'd still want to know how Heave-ho and Chuckya interact with Mario when he isn't rendered, because after all they throw him from his visible body.

      A goomba clone appearing the wrong place is probably a result of transport cloning, i.e. the goomba was being pushed by another goomba at the moment you released the clone. I have a video about it on my main channel.

      +locked_lunatic Wait, if he did prematurely clone the coin, that invalidates the experiment. It's possible an object without a premature state _can_ be released with zero visible frames, at the HOLP, without requiring Mario to be invisible. +pannenkeok2012 have you tried this?

      Often what I show in my videos are simplistic examples, and my real tests were done earlier. This is one of those cases. I had actually first tested this with goombas, who don't have a premature form. However, to do this, I hacked the goomba spawner to be underground and you couldn't even see the goombas loading (I watched the OBJ count using MHS to check this). But that example would be confusing and unintuitive for viewers, so I just showed a more simplistic example for the video, albeit not quite as a definitive example due to coins having a premature form.

      +Matthew28845 Held Object Last Position. It's used to keep track of where to spawn the held object when Mario releases it, and is used in some low-A-press level runs.
