    That low pcie slot layout on the unify, it's to make it easier for GPU and CPU double loop water coolers. It stops your VGA loop runs getting in the way of your cpu loop runs, or having to deal with silly short joiner tubes. People on water cooling forums asked for that. Then you don't care about obstructed airflow and you're really dealing with 1~1.5 slot blocks. I kind of hate it too, but I appreciate why it's like that, given the market for those boards.

    MSI actually trying to give quality components in their mid to high range motherboards is why I ended up getting a MAG B550M Mortar after having a sour taste left in my mouth from the ASRock B450M Pro 4 and B550m Steel Legend boards that I bought. I tried out the Asus TUF Gaming B550M Plus but the lack of fan headers and some odd issues with the BIOS had me doing an exchange. It's better now with the recent BIOS updates but I'm not building another AM4 system anytime soon. I do like the ASUS config as I would rather the Sound Blaster card live above the GPU rather than the last PCI-e slot on the bottom of the board. The 1220 sound chip is quite good though so I may just ditch the SB card and put in a capture card rather than going external.

Mated it with the Micro Center exclusive Ryzen 5 5600X3D cpu, an XFX SWFT 319 Radeon 6800XT, and 32GB of ram. Probably be tweaking for the next month or so, but initial test runs of KEBAL SPACE PROGRAM 2 are AMAZEBALLS!!!! My old machine ran it at about a frame per second at times. This thing is running it on 4K with all the settings maxed and it's maybe dropping to around 29 fps. Great hardware.

  • @SpuriousECG
    @SpuriousECG 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Whoever made the S Unify boards really has an unhealthy obsession with M.2 slots. PCIe slots are a lot more useful, especially for a light workstation build with the 5900X or 5950X.

    • @rawdez_
      @rawdez_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you don't need a 2 slots board and memory speeds higher than 2 x InfinityFabric e.g. 4000-4200MT/s for a light workstation build with the 5900X or 5950X at all.
      so these boards don't make any sense but for extreme PC enthusiasts with no budget restraints and A LOT of games to install on NVMe-s.

      @@rawdez_ Sure but if I had several thousand dollars to blow on a CPU+Mobo+a crapton of NVMe, surely I would just go for a X299 build...
      It's not really a top end board either, missing stuff like 10GbE or 5GbE among other things.
      And it's not really a XOC board either because, well, where PCIe slots.
      I just don't really understand who is supposed to buy these. Gamers with unlimited budget? X570 Godlike, C8E, Xtreme are a thing. Need fast storage for a very specific workload? PCIe x16 > NVMe cards are a thing, just slap some of them on TRX40/X299.
      RAM XOC? B550 Unify already exists, and is a significantly more practical board for just about everybody.
      The only niche the board fills is, huh... Extremely fast storage with very good RAM overclocking, except to use the storage you're gimping everything else, and same with the high ram frequency.

      That's why there are other boards in the lineup. It's there to give you the option if you wanted it. The same guy designed the Ace and the Unify. There was originally going to be a Unify non-X Max too, but they decided there were too many SKUs.

    I got the X570 Tomahawk (not the S) for the fact that I wanted as many USB ports as I could get in my budget, decent quality, and...well, that was basically it. It was about $330AUD when I got it. I've been using it for somewhere between 12-18 months, and I'm replacing it now because my needs and desires have changed, heading to the X570 Creation, also from MSI. I had a bit of a scare when after keeping an eye on it for a little while it started to disappear from some stores I'd been checking on, and has apparently been discontinued? It may be an $800AUD board, but between the 3 full length PCIe slots (not electrically, but that's fine), 10GbE on board (not important right now, but it will be soon as I'm filling out my network and building a home server setup), and more USB than I can even imagine using right now (my Tomahawk is full and still has more things I have to trade in and out at times). I managed to find a store on Amazon with 3, and figured I'd get it now while I could. Plus, I took the opportunity to get a 5900X at the same time, since I'd be having to repaste the CPU/cooler anyway; may as well make it more worthwhile for the times I work on more multithreaded workloads. A far cry from the Intel 3770 that I was running 18~ months ago, but it's going to be good not to have to think about it again. That and the CPU I've been running will go great in my AM4 server board when I build that out for the home server. It's never a waste when the old hardware can be reused and already has things planned for it.

    "I don't think you can get a dual LAN B550"
    You can. The B550 Tomahawk has dual LAN. It also happens to be almost identical to the X570S Torpedo in branding and featureset, including the PCIe and M.2 slot layout.
    The X570S Torpedo is a more expensive B550 Tomahawk with 2 extra USB ports, 2 extra power stages, and slightly higher bandwidth to its lower slots.

    I usually stick with asus for the software convenience, but it's starting to get really disappointing that until now none of their X570 boards have more than 2 m.2 slots, other than the ProArt, which doesn't have a post code, and the Extreme.

    How they could leave such a feature out of the instruction book is incomprehensible!

  • @PFAlt
    @PFAlt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very much looking towards your videos in the next few months. Can't wait to see how the new gigabytes, msi, and asrocks perform. Asus seems to be pulling the ekwb move, good for zen 1, zen+, and kinda been sitting on their ass for zen 2 and 3 while still charging a premium for their meh products. There's an X570S Dark Hero though. It's msrp is higher (450$), but can actually be bought at msrp in this side of the ocean though. People still seem to be buying the non-S C8DH and it's going for >500$, amazon, newegg, or elsewhere.
    For the unify-x, if they really want so many damn NVMe SSDs, they should really do 16/8/12 pcie slots, and include a x12 pcie adaptor card to 4 x4 M.2. 12x shouldn't be a bottle neck as its isn't possible to fully utilize all 4 m.2s simutaneously through the chipset lanes anyway. There only really ever *needs* to be 1 M.2 directly on the board, directly to the cpu. The amount of board space M.2s take up on some of these boards is wasteful.
    Heck, they're already doing x16/8/8 and including a 2 x4 M.2 card on the ACE MAX. Just go the extra step and spend a few more dollars. These are 350-450$ boards, none of them should be compromising on such simple i/o. This is a super annoying issue for me as so many otherwise good boards are a non-option since I can't use my other cards in them.

  • @dabombinablemi6188
    @dabombinablemi6188 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Already having an add-in m.2 card from my H97 and Z97 (I love switches) boards is why I decided to go with the Torpedo Max. I'd never have a use for the x4 slot otherwise and I also already had a relatively new Intel AX200 based wifi card. Plus the PCIe 4.0 chipset-cpu connection was pretty much a must - with the extra m.2 slot+expansion card I'd have my H97 DMI bandwidth issues all over again.
    While I appreciate integration - past component failures on boards+lack of features on LGA1150 (and having had a Gigabyte X570 UD) means that I have ample good add-on cards and I'd rather use them.

    just got the ACE MAX. pairing with 5950x ryzen 9. question, some liquid coolers offer 4 point mounting systems for AM4 socket. Should i get one of the coolers compatible with with the 4 point AM4 bracket or just get a solid cooler with a standard AM4 hook style bracket. I was going to use my current 280mm rad but its over 3 years old, so at least half of its life is over. I will now be using a 360mm rad which will offer mounting challenges but i am confident i can overcome that. Thermaltake mk-1 case, current setup is rad mounted above the case/top case fans with only the fan shroud concealing the Rad. I love that i was able to do that to keep Radiant heat away from components in testing this improved ambient temps inside the case. With the 360mm though i would have to cut a small piece of the fan shroud. 1" of rad would poke out of the back of the fan shroud/case. OR I mount it internally and just will have to accept the fact internal temps will run a degree or 2 higher.

      It's to make water cooling loops easier and more aesthetically pleasing. Otherwise all you GPU and CPU loops' tubing gets in the way. If you are going dual GPU water loop, you have 1 slot water blocks, maybe 1.5, but it makes it much simpler to have your tube runs not getting in the way. Given the market for those boards, a lot of them will be full water cooling builds.

      So far the only ASUS 4 dimmer I've tried has been a massive disappointment. Also the active OC switcher IMO isn't really worth it because you end up running into basically having to do the exact same stability validation that you would for a static OC except the 5000 series can actually pull even more power than 3000 series and so depending on your stress test of choice you really don't get to push much past PBO.

    There is nothing wrong with the layout of that edge motherboard. But true about that last PCI-e 16x slot could be just a normal 1x slot instead. Maybe msi did that purposely, just to look the board optical better. Boards splitting the first GPu SLot to 2x 8 doesnt make any sense to me.. The bandwith then is the same as a regular 3.0 x16 slot.
    For future gpus which could support gen 5.0 is better to have a faster 4.0 gpu slot at 16lanes. Then there shoudnt be a problem with 5.0 x8 cards in near future.

    I have a B450 Gaming Pro Carbon with a 3600x. I still get random hot boot issues where the board just refuses to post after a restart, and gives a VGA error on the LEDs. I just need to power off, then power on and it'll boot, but in MSI's bios revisions, one of the first revisions they did was to make it more compatible with video cards. I have a 1070 Ti MSI Duke. You'd think they'd be able to figure out how to make their motherboard compatible with their own video card. Their latest BIOS revision changed the profile format, so all my memory timings saved on my USB drive didn't work any more, and I'd either have to flash back to load the profile and get the timings, or just say screw it and use the XMP default. I used the XMP default. MSI is not on my list of future board suppliers.

    Hey BuildZoid,
    Is there anyway to measure the efficiency of VRM power conversion / setup?

    • @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking
      @ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there is but it's incredibly difficult to do and pretty invasive of the motherboard.

    • @nathangamble125
      @nathangamble125 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can roughly work it out based on the spec of the power stages. Buildzoid does it in a few of his in-depth motherboard reviews. This does have limitations though, in that some motherboard manufacturers (mostly Biostar) screw up the design of VRMs that are very good on paper and end up being horrendously inefficient anyway.
      The most reliable way to measure how good a VRM is, is to measure how hot it gets. Hardware Unboxed have a load of detailed reviews where they test this for different motherboard models with a range of different CPUs. Heatsink design can have a lot of impact on this though, so isn't necessarily the best source if you just want to know how good the VRM itself is while ignoring other factors of the motherboard design.

An average gamer is very unlikely to ever install any expansion card other than the GPU so M.2 slots are much more useful.

    AM4 is already effectively a retired socket, and the X570 chipset itself was rarely advantageous for the average Ryzen 3000/5000 user. Making new X570(s) boards seems strange this late in production. Any idea why?

    • @AngelA-tj9ok
      @AngelA-tj9ok 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think AMD won't retire AM4 and at least 5000 cpu series to go along with it as low end and mid range of their offering made on then probably cheaper 7nm production node. 6000 or 7000 cpu series on 6nm and/or 5nm with new AM5 platform, I don't think it would be possible to replace whole cpu range from top to bottom price wise and production wise so more probably production of AM4 and AM5 cpu/motherboard combos would continue in parallel for some significant time. Till new technologies brought by AM5 grab enough market share to get more reachable and price goes down enough for most of people to be able to buy without bancruptcy.
