    You can't help someone who isn't willing to work to help themselves. Distance can often be your best option.

    • @ChrisFromLongIsland
      @ChrisFromLongIsland 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You’re right on the mark with your first statement but I will argue it’s hard to ‘distance’ yourself from a dependent in your household. Tickets, creditors, authorities (in more severe cases) and shadier figures will present themselves at your doorstep because this person attracted them there. From my humble perspective, I don’t think distance is a feasible option. I don’t support the opposite end of the spectrum because I don’t think taking complete control works either. Consider the scenario where your family members cannot all get on the same page in taking actions like the ones Dave suggested in his video. There’s a chance that the caller will seek punitive actions (tough love) while the mother or other family members will remain reluctant to follow because they are more convinced a softer reaction will work better. I’m living a similar situation myself, so humor what I’m saying even for a moment.

    Hence why you don't have 15 different kids with 15 different baby daddies. Despite what the culture says, a child needs a father, and their own father is typically best for them unless he's some sort of addict or molester.

    • @clarifyingquestions
      @clarifyingquestions 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Agreed! Dads matter! We live in a culture that neither supports or values this. For true equality - men need to be empowered to be fathers. Fatherhood is not optional. It is a necessity in a child's life.

    • @ChrisFromLongIsland
      @ChrisFromLongIsland 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’m not saying you’re wrong here, but how does your rant help the kid and his family now? I’ll answer that for you- it does not. Lot of kids are living without both parents present and those are the ones more likely to spiral in early adulthood. The question in the video is, how do you prevent the spiral or at least soften the landing at the bottom? That’s a lot harder to answer than simply saying that the missing father should be there.

    I've been close to that situation and the worse thing was that the grandmother would not stand firm with myself which basically enabled him to continue acting that way. But 18, Dave is right take the things away from him he takes for granted. Otherwise people will continue whatever the ones around them enable them to do.

      I don’t know if I agree with never letting him back. But he does need to suffer for a couple months first. My husband was kicked out of his parents house at 18, and now he owns a successful business and makes over 230k a year (profit, after all expenses). My husband’s biggest complaint is that after he learned his lesson and slept outside in the freezing cold, for months, his dad didn’t ever let him back in. It’s shaped him and made him tough, but he also has less emotions bcuz of it. Ideally his dad should’ve let him back in *once* he learned his lesson and was actively working hard at a job. He had to pay full price on rent, etc, and obviously that really delays someone’s start in life when parents give zero help

    People use the term little brother when the little brother is probably bigger than the older brother you should use the term younger brother, it is correct

    Sounds like the problem is the 17 year old here is stuck in a family of impossible to please, impossible to make happy puritan fanatics. Puritans who wish to isolate & repress him as long as they can.
    Best case, don't start trying to ground him or take away phones & thing. Just carry on as best as possible, with both sides clearly understanding that after high school is over, he's out of this catastrophe of a household.
