This sounds a bit confusing; co-sign for a loan but mom's name is on the title? It's probably more likely that the lender's name is on the title (and at their office) and mom's name is on the registration.

I think the lender is usually listed as the "leinholder" on the title but SOMEBODY still has to have rights to it once the debt has been paid off. The point is that the caller is stuck with this debt but has no legal rights to sell the car, which is messed up.

Part of the reason the parents want him to keep the car is that they think it will be more reliable for him to get to school and his job. However, car payments don't guarantee that. Lamborghinis break down as much or more than Toyotas and Hondas.

I think that the mom is thinking that he is safer in this car because a lot of people believe that used cars are nothing but trouble. He was on the loan because of the "teaching responsible debtor behavior" that Dave was talking about, but she had only her name on the title so that her (at the time) underage son didn't misbehave. If he was coming home at 3 am every night she could sell it to teach him a lesson. A teen that knows his parent has no recourse is a terrible thing! The other reason is if the car is in her name, the insurance cost is lower. My parents and I had this arrangement when I was 16 too. But it was a $1,200 car that was paid off, and my parents are very trustworthy, so it didn't matter as much.

I seriously doubt the car is worth as much as this caller stated unless Mom paid a chunk on the down payment. If so, he is not going to walk away with $10k in cash.
If owing on the car bothers him that much, then I agree, go talk to Mom respectively. Maybe he can sell the car and get enough cash to buy a good used one, or not. However, telling his Mom, "hey, it's your debt, I'm going to quit making the payments" is BS advice.
Bottom line, he's living with his parents. They have set him up with a good car, especially important given the miles he is driving each day to school and work. He probably could not live on his own given his current salary (most likely part time at that). Sacrifice for another year until you complete the program, get you a full time job, go find you a place to live, and then he can drive a hooptie car until his heart is content.

Ya. And with his living situation, he could also just pay extra on the car and pay it off. Then he really could sell it at a profit, if he is able to do so.

That's the parents way of keeping the kid at home... let's get something clear: not all parents want their children to leave the nest. If he has debt and needs the car, he doesn't have money to look for his own place once he graduates...

This is so true. My mother charged me rent after I graduated high school and whenever I would talk about moving out/finding an apartment, she would tell me how “no landlord will rent to me” or how “I don’t know how expensive it really is”. A couple years moved out, no problems lol.

How about being grateful that his parents helped him buy a new car? Just pay it off, and move on.

Apparently Tim's parents aren't very good at math...
Tim makes $15/ hr ($30k gross per year IF he works full time) and has to pay for a $25k car.

It's not a 25K car, the loan is only 17K. The kid has no expenses...he can easily afford that, that's why he's able to chunk big payments at the debt (if you listen to the call)

What about jus paying the car off and keeping it?? You don’t need to buy an overpriced used car if this is your only debt

Bad advice. The mother is a control freak, but Dave is setting up this relationship for severe damage. The son could politely ask his mom to sell the car, but telling the mom, this is your car and walking away will freak out the mother to the point she may not want to talk to her son because he doesn't know his place.
Sometimes, for the sake of the relationship you have to put up with stuff temporarily. In the future, it is best only to visit the mom for dinner, have pleasant conversations, but never do business with her.
