I have owned about 10 Subarus. If you are considering a used one, be sure to do at least 2 things when looking at one. 1. take the oil dip stick out, and smell the oil. If you get any whiff of coolant, walk away. 2. Test drive the car till it gets up to temperature, then drive it a little longer to see if the coolant temperature gets higher than normal range - if it does walk away. You should also look under the car to see if it's leaking oil for older Subarus. Other than those issues Subarus are good cars.

These new FA engines don't have the head gasket issues the previous EJ engines had so most of this advice while not being bad is also not specific to the FA engine in this car. It's something to check for in ANY used car.

Pretty much yes, but this one looks well kept with only the
STI OEM exhaust and aftermarket shifter. You still should always have a good mechanic check it out. This
One is nice, and the price reasonable. I would just want it in midnight blue.

True. I'd say it's not bad to buy a modified one if you're planning on modifying it anyway and it's tastefully done also I'd expect things to be wrong and if you know how to work on cars it wouldn't be so bad imo

I’d be nervous buying an even lightly modded WRX. So many kids rice these things out, and who knows what kind of beating the engine, clutch, and brakes have taken? This one looks nice, but I’d still be leery.

It’s a gamble to go used. I got my 17 WRX certified pre owned. A couple months later the clutch poops out on me and had axles seals leaking. It looked fine from the factory and I attributed the stiff clutch to just being a sports car. It wasn’t until I test drove a wrx a few months down the line that I found the clutch was shot. This one he is reviewing has some induction noises which are much louder than stock which leads me to think it has some type of after market air intake/bpv/air filter. Was probably modded and then returned to stock to sell 🤷‍♂️

At the end of the day, ALL used cars will need repairs. The biggest thing with a turbo-charged car is who owned it and how it was maintained. I'd personally never buy a WRX or STi used from a dealer. I've looked at 10+ WRX or STi's at dealers and they either needed a ton of work or were way over priced like "The Drake" pointed out. There are plenty of private sellers with good reputations deep in Facebook or Subaru forums. Just takes time and patience.

To me the answer is a clear no. A used WRX on autotrader in my area goes for 22 to 24 thousand. A new WRX is listed at 27,695 dollars. 90% of WRX drivers have a heavy foot. If you can't afford the extra 5-6 you should not be driving this car.

i wouldnt buy used unless it was a previous generation. these dont depreciate, so no point in buying it used because its still just as expensive, sometimes even more so because of the higher APR on used cars.

The quality over time is by far the worst thing I’ve ever had to deal with. Transmission and a/c being the main problem. Subaru quoted me for 14 hours of labor plus parts... Went to a performance shop and did it for a 3rd of the price. Other than that it has been amazing to me thus far. These WRX's with the FA20's are STUPID reliable, the ones you hear most about have been tinkered with.
