I used to own a 2018 STI. I traded it in for a 2019 Legacy Limited Edition due to traveling 90 miles round trip for work. Now with the current health pandemic and living 5 minutes from work I do not drive much anymore. Once I relocate to Florida permanently, I will seek out another STI for keeps.

Enjoyed watching your reviews, especially the WRX ones. And you're right about the community. Coming from motorcycle community, where we all wave at other riders, I feel at home with the WRX ✌️
Is the best car for your money! I use to own a 2018 sti, I have to trade my sti for a 2019 wrx because I want to lower my payments to buy a house the I bought for my family! But let me tell the fun the I have in my wrx now is crazy! Is tune by theshopct by mike the car is making 330hp to the wheels! Full bolt ons, I just put a tomei exhaust and it sounds amazing with the invidia j-pipe! Do i miss my sti no because I know I wasn’t going to do that in the sti scared of blowing the engine and I didn’t have 5,000 in my package to fix it just in case the dealer was not going to take care of the car! Yes the sti is a more complete car than the wrx! Is a big difference day and knight! But if you know your limited and want to play with your car the wrx is The cheapest way now is to keep the car stock go for the sti all day!
Tbh, for my money, I’ll take this over the sti because the WRX engine is a modern new engine released in 2015, but the sti engine been released since 2004 and it’s still being used in the new sti, the WRX stock exhaust sounds louder than the sti stock exhaust, also I can build my WRX and convert it into an sti with the wing install, coilovers, Brembo brakes, wheel swap, fog light delete and make the it air functional, the old Impreza WRX seats, exhaust swap, rear bumper third braking light installations, and tuning. The sti is the same WRX but tuned and modified straight from the factory rather than by the owners. So if you’re an diy enthusiast, then get the WRX and avoid the sti because the WRX is an customizable and tunable car. So my money is going for the wrx.
Mazdaspeed 3, Mitsubishi, Focus st, Srt4, Cobalt SS... I've heard a lot of cars that tried to take the awd wrx thru the yrs but there isn't a car that can do what the Rex can do for an extended period of time at this price. A rally car for the domestic enthusiast.
its because Subaru has nothing else to offer, yet luckily for them the product is still unique enough to make a difference. You can get a 2020 Mustang Ecoboosts for $22k, I say that the better deal.
@@herschelwalker591 Mustang eco boost? With that horrible reliability ford record, low resale, no awd, and a million of those on the road. A wrx is not only an enthusiast car but has a huge aftermarket that you'll never find on no ecoboost.
@@herschelwalker591 Subaru has nothing else to offer? Ford is about to release a wagon to compete against the Outback. That's going to be funny because the Outback not only owns that market, it invented it.
@@ks-bg5uk in the performance market the WRX is it, the STI is a dated overpriced pos. I also find it ironic you think Subaru builds more reliable motors than Ford when my Crosstek has had 3 recalls for the motor. FRS/BRZs had recalls for complete engine replacement and let's not forget the unreliable rickety pos EJ.
@@herschelwalker591 Edmund, Kelly Blue Book , Motor Trend all recommend and score the crosstrek with high ratings. Motortrend even said the crosstrek was " damn near perfect for a crossover." You told me subaru has nothing else to offer but all this time you've owned a crosstrek? lol. The wrx/sti line are championship rally cars . There is no car like the wrx at this price. No turbo car with awd that has lasted this long. There's a reason why focus st was discontinued in the US.
I live in upstate New York and I just bought a brand new 2020 WRX base model for about 28 grand but they snuck in a front sti lip in it I love the car I just got done putting on a borla S-Type dual Cat-Back exhaust last night on it boy she screams now
I got a 2020 base myself. 0 regrets it’s the way this car should be purchased. I optioned kicker speakers, all weather floor liners, door sill plates and a sti short shifter. Idk about 25k maybe if you get 0 options added to it. Sticker on mine was 30,095 and I paid 28k flat. Dealer invoice was 28,375. Perks of having family work for SOA
I own a 2018 WRX base and you were spot on with this review. It’s such a barebones drivers car with no intrusive tech to get in the way. Cars like the Si are nice but they have killer rev hang, annoying safety features, and no manual parking brake. I was curious though, how’s the rev hang in the car. I’ve heard that Subaru reduced the rev hang for the 2020 model year but don’t know if that’s true. Regardless, most people tune it anyway.
Owner of a black 1998 wrx... I approve lol My foglights are sitting in a box 📦 in my garage closet lol, and I always hear, 'the 2015+ look like a gc' and I agree.
Some would say I am crazy, but I am selling my Type R (2018) to grab a new 2020 base wrx and a nice used roadster or rwd car next summer. Depreciation wise the other trims are not worth it imo. The STI right now will eat a large depreciation hit next year once the much needed engine refresh happens, the wrx not so much. This 2020 will be a fun daily year round (here in canada) and for a non track guy like me (I am a honda fanboy that made his dream come true!) the wrx is plenty of fun fpr street driving. The Type R is cool, but for the street only, I'd say it is not the best choice.

Thank you for this review, Joe - very informative. I am planning on test driving one today. I miss having a stick shift - I haven't had one in 13 years. :(
I remember when I first got my 2010 5 Speed WRX Hatch. As soon as I broke the baby in, I remember getting on throttle and I was like "WTF", all this for 25K? And then my friend who came down with his mk4 supra, gave me a feeler in his Supra even questioned his 700hp supra when he got in my stock WRX. He was like "WTF? How much power does this car really have?" The feeling of the acceleration is incredible for 25k! Eventually I went on to sell that car for 3-4K Above bluebook with 125k miles on it. Didn't get the best MPG (averaged about low 20's) but man was it fun to drive with plenty of space. Stereo sucked. Probably the worst I've ever heard in a car. But plenty of room in the hatch and the rear seats.
Great job Joe! As usual of course. My question to you.... Spending your own money.... You buying this or an SI for your daily driver? Is Subaru considered reliable for long term ownership?
Just got mine last month, absolutely love it! I have found the clutch-pedal is higher than I am used to, that has been an adjustment for me, but overall, I love this car (previously had leased VW GLI for the past 10 years).
Awesome review Joe!! I think this base Wrx and the Civic Si are as good as it gets for mid $20k!! Before I bought my 19’ civic Type R I had a 2017 Si! It was a lot of car for the money!! The new gen Si was fairly quick for what it was!! Also in my 17’ Si I would get upper 30 mpg’s and around 30 in town!! The intiriory is nicer in the Si than the base Wrx!! But I would be happy with either the Wrx or Si if I were in the market for one!! Keep up the great content Joe!! You are a heck of a great guy inside out!! 🚙👍🏽🙏🏻
Joel Remland I agree !! There are many great cars in that price range!! You make a great point!! The cool thing is everybody has their own unique taste in cars!! That’s what’s great about being a car enthusiast!!
You're not lying about the space. I had a set of 4 wheels and tires plus a jack plus the tools to swap em out in my car for a while. Yes it takes your back seat room but there's something impressive about a sports car being able to carry it's own parts inside. But I would never buy this car in black. It looks so safe and boring. I got mine in white. The white, black, red color styling suits this car incredibly well and the white shows off the fender flaring.
Was looking at wrx or 2020 Si. Wrx gas mileage sucks 18 city gets worst when driving hard like 15mpg ugh. 25 hwy has to be premium, Also if u get flat u need to change all 4 tires , bad for differentials. Si get 28 city even with tune, 38 highway on 87 gas Si u can use Ktuner 240hp no all wheel drive issues and better mpg. Si 1.5 can do easily 300hp with new clutch ,ktuner
I wouldn't say it's the best new performance car for around 25K. That honor goes to the EcoBoost Mustang and Turbo Camaro. You can easily get those at 25k and they will run rings around this thing in all but inclement weather conditions. The WRX obviously has them beat for practicality, but performance? No way.
I'm considering buying a 2020 WRX, but the oil consumption issue has me concerned. Based on the limited info I could find, the WRX FA20 engine doesn't seem to have this problem as much as other versions of this engine, but I'm trying to verify it before I plop down the $$. I drive over 20,000 miles per year and I definitely don't want to deal with oil consumption and all the problems that come with it. Can any current gen WRX owners reading this verify their amount of consumption, if any?
@@RaitisRides That's why I'm hoping to get some actual owners with actual experience to chime in. I think it's only the FB engines that use 0w20 oil. I'm pretty sure the WRX's still require 5w30 which is a thicker oil.
Hey Joe, did Subaru fix the rev hang for the 2020? That's the one thing I hate about mine, shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. But I have learned to manage it. Roads in Ohio can be terrible, especially in my city. Wished we had roads like Florida.

Thanks for letting me share it with you!
@@RaitisRides I just got a 2020 WRX premium. As I was driving home (getting used the manual Transmission) I hear a another WRX coming down the road beeping their horn at me, the driver rolled his window down, waved, and took off! It was almost like a welcome to the club wave. Best feeling ever!
Owner of an '18 STi here. I'm curious what issues you had that made you trade it in? I DD mine, though my trip is significantly less than yours was. I have done some long trips without much fatigue. I absolutely love the handling! Cheers!
R1Armadill0 -I did not have any issues with car. I did not tweak the engine but added exterior items such as stickers, etc... I work in CA. The price of premium gas was $4.10 a gallon at the time. It added up quickly. Every fourth day I was filling up the car.
You're killing it, Joe! Keep up the good work!
This baby is on my next-car list.
You will love it!
See me
I can help
I’m gonna say heck yeah too!! Love Subaru’s, thank you for the review. Looking at getting myself a brz but the wrx they are gorgeous cars. I’ve already owned two so that’s why I’m thinking the brz, currently I have a forester xt I’m keeping that one, need a sportier car 💙
Brz are more expensive and much much slower lol
8:08 That little space fits about 8 Twinkies. This man knows his priorities.
This guy sold me for sure 😂 If you drive a WRX and see another one please 🌊 it’s a tradition!!
Oh yeah, where are my Subaru people in the comments at?
Sincerely, That Subaru Guy!
Thanks for letting me share the Subaru Love with you!
@@RaitisRides For sure!! Love my Subarus’ happen to own two myself! 🤟🏾
Funny what you said about the peanut m&ms in the center console because I have some in my ‘20 WRX lol
You can easily put 8 twinkies without squeezing cream anywhere...got me sold right there 👍
Back in November, test drove an SI, GT86, and WRX (base). Ended up with the WRX, and I feel that I have made the best choice for me. Absolutely spot on for bang for the buck! Enjoyed watching your reviews, especially the WRX ones. And you're right about the community. Coming from motorcycle community, where we all wave at other riders, I feel at home with the WRX ✌️
How’s the car handling?
Thanks for sharing that great ownership input.
BMO I know he works in theshopct in Connecticut!
I live in upstate New York and I just bought a brand new 2020 WRX base model for about 28 grand but they snuck in a front sti lip in it I love the car I just got done putting on a borla S-Type dual Cat-Back exhaust last night on it boy she screams now
Now we are talking Michael!
I got STI, Trying convince my buddy to get this 2020 Wrx, definitely forwarding this Vid, cheers and thanks Ratti
Base WRX is $29,000 at my local dealership
...then taxes and dealer fees.
you know you can talk them down from that price right?
The dealer I bought mine from had it listed for 27600 and i walked out paying 25
MITCXHELLXGEIST mine premium was 31,000 but got it for 28,000. Good deals
My next car after I pay off my Type R and trade in my 13' Impreza
You will love it!
These cars are actually pretty impressive
The base WRX with the short throw shifter option and you're pretty much golden.
I still cannot believe the choice of those standard wheels blegh. Here in Aus, all models of the wrx come with the nicer 18inch ones
Great review Raiti’s!!! I can’t wait for the 2021 Subaru STI. I heard great things about the FA engines. I’m still stuck on the EJ engines.
I own a 2020 and it still hangs revs like my 2011
I was gonna get a new honda civic si but this really changed my mind
I just traded in my 10th Gen Si for this lol
@@eeh10 hell yeah!
@@eeh10 same here and i didn’t even look back 😂
Owner of a black 1998 wrx...
I approve lol
My foglights are sitting in a box 📦 in my garage closet lol, and I always hear, 'the 2015+ look like a gc' and I agree.
Hey, im a year late but how do you feel now looking back on the transition from type r to wrx?
I am curious because im debating between these 2 cars myself
I just bought one on May 7th and I love it!
Congrats Eric! What color did you go with?
@@RaitisRides I went for the white Pearl. I watched many of your videos amongst others while trying to make a decision between the civic si and gti. So thanks for all the car videos, keep it up!
i wish they would bring back the hatch :( I liked the hatch. It really looks sportier
Thank you for this review, Joe - very informative. I am planning on test driving one today. I miss having a stick shift - I haven't had one in 13 years. :(
Amazing review as always! Love the jokes you put here and there.
Thanks for sharing that input from your experience!
Love the WRX's
One of the many reasons why I like you!
@@RaitisRides lol
Wanted to love this car and I actually bought one in 2015, but the engine and tuning (flat spots and rev hang primarily) absolutely ruined it for me.
Accessport and, tune it. You got google?
Eric S Wow, so condescending. Some people don't want to kill the powertrain warranty on their new car.
@@amiller2121 yea its like they purposely tuned it like crap so people would tune it themselves/void their powertrain.
Can’t beat that for 25K
Great job Joe! As usual of course. My question to you.... Spending your own money.... You buying this or an SI for your daily driver? Is Subaru considered reliable for long term ownership?
Just got mine last month, absolutely love it! I have found the clutch-pedal is higher than I am used to, that has been an adjustment for me, but overall, I love this car (previously had leased VW GLI for the past 10 years).
@Dale Macarena ➊ they were 3 different GLIs!
I wasn't convinced until I heard there's space for peanut m&ms, now I'm in love
I cant believe the base price of wrx is $27k there. Here in my country base price of wrx is around $36k. Damn tax
25k for 45k miles nowadays 😢
Shaun Christensen - So also look at a base Miata (for pure fun) and base Mustang with a manual; 300 hp! Cool cars with big fun factor
Joel Remland I agree !! There are many great cars in that price range!! You make a great point!! The cool thing is everybody has their own unique taste in cars!! That’s what’s great about being a car enthusiast!!
13:00 sometimes??? Do you not know these cars are meant to be modified? Up to 400 WHP with the stock motor. Some do 500.
You can’t beat the price but the start up makes me appreciate my stang 🤣
What would be the best choice wrx or si?
Si better car for the money
Was looking at wrx or 2020 Si. Wrx gas mileage sucks 18 city gets worst when driving hard like 15mpg ugh. 25 hwy has to be premium, Also if u get flat u need to change all 4 tires , bad for differentials. Si get 28 city even with tune, 38 highway on 87 gas Si u can use Ktuner 240hp no all wheel drive issues and better mpg. Si 1.5 can do easily 300hp with new clutch ,ktuner
You are so very right.
I like the White WRX Premium.
I.... I.... think I'm sold.
Hey Joe. At least this Subaru is a Manual and not a CVT. 👌🔥
So very true!
@@RaitisRides ;D
Rally car baboy such a good one
Is the base model worth it? what is the difference performance/exhaust wise?
I picked up a base model with the same color 2 weeks ago (As of may 10) and it’s honestly a great car for what it costs!!
How is first gear - any bother with rev hang at all?
Can wait for mine to be delivered I got the base 🔥
Great review Joe!! I always look forward to your Subaru reviews. Just wanted to say that I would love to see more content on your Type RA!
With the new model coming out on the global platform, might be worth the wait for that one.
... But this is why this cheap WRX is great value. New platform and design will probably start at ~$28K minimum.
Good luck due to the pandemic we wont see that for a while
I wouldn't say it's the best new performance car for around 25K. That honor goes to the EcoBoost Mustang and Turbo Camaro. You can easily get those at 25k and they will run rings around this thing in all but inclement weather conditions.
The WRX obviously has them beat for practicality, but performance? No way.
mishfal those two you mentioned will not handle as well as this Subaru.
Why not just check performance numbers before you say something uninformed?
Whoppers, Mr pibb, mentos, mints, twinkies, and peanut m&ms.
For sure best sports car for the money today
And now there worth 32k plus
i didn't even know you turned it on.... i was like wait, he reved while the car was off?!?!?! that shit quiet
$2000 on a downpipe, flex fuel, and tune can net you 355hp/345tq, absolutely unbeatable bang for buck!
So very true!
You got a new subscriber. Keep it up!
You will get twenty different answers from 20 different people.
@@RaitisRides That's why I'm hoping to get some actual owners with actual experience to chime in. I think it's only the FB engines that use 0w20 oil. I'm pretty sure the WRX's still require 5w30 which is a thicker oil.
Hey Joe! Is this a good beginner car for youngsters like me? BTW love your vids!
Im trying to decide between this and civic SI. WHich one u guys recommend ?
Hey Joe, did Subaru fix the rev hang for the 2020? That's the one thing I hate about mine, shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. But I have learned to manage it. Roads in Ohio can be terrible, especially in my city. Wished we had roads like Florida.
