A few people have found our spider charts a bit confusing, so just to clarify - the scores on the spider charts are for the corresponding usage rating (eg. TV Shows, Movies, etc), not for a specific test.

I did not see this review till today but last week purchased X90J. In this review it may seem the 2 sets seems closely matched but after comparing the tv's myself before my purchase, the Sony X90J has far superior picture quality to all the rest. You say the viewing angle makes the Sammy better as a PC monitor, I do not agree with that, and this is 100% of my use case. I sit right close and better picture quality is a much bigger factor than the viewing angle of VA, for me. In store I just put the same content on both and try and adjust the picture till I'm happy and the X90J was a no brainer for me. Why would I game at 1440p? The RTX 3080 smashes out over 100FPS on this at 4K and its just beautiful thing. Have a great time ya'll with whatever set you choose ! The RTings for each use case is important because people do use these things differently.

No the QN80A isn't better at anything. Nothing matters if it has THAT shitty contrast ratio and black uniformity. The color volume makes up for the lack of color gamut that you see.

    • @loki76
      @loki76 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Ronald Trump Yes they are important.
Some of the new and expensive Qned from LG with MiniLED might help if they still use IPS panel to make the blacks much better. But IPS panels are not good for contrast which is important. They have wider viewing angles but that can be had on VA panels as well when they do optical layers on them.
      The X90J should be 1200 for 55"..
      It's a good TV.
It is certainly WAY WAY better than LG Nano. That is a guarantee.

This was the dumbest shit I've ever seen..

Their "categories" makes no f**king sense when the Base important aspects are ignored.. Am I the only one that saw how bad the contrast was on QN80A and how bad the black uniformity is.. Literally clouding.
Why would ANYONE ignore those aspects when for example choosing a PC monitor between them? And go "hurr durr, the Samsung as 5ms faster input lag", which isn't noticeable.
They claim better viewing angles. First off More of a SHIT picture doesn't make it better. Second you DO NOT sit closer than 5-6 feet with a TV that big. You will get neck problems and eye issues. So viewing angles head on will not matter.
I mean SERIOUSLY did you SEE the black uniformity and local dimming and DSE? Why the HELL would anyone pick that for a PC monitor..
1440P doesn't matter when games have resolution scaling. You would always keep your PC monitor AT NATIVE resolution or it will be a blurry mess. These guys are clueless.
DSE would also be bad on a monitor with a lot of white screens/pages. Low contrast ratio would be worse for legibility of text and overall Picture IQ..

In the UK 🇬🇧, the Samsung Q80A 50” and 85” tv’s still use VA panels. The Samsung 50” Q80A QLED VA panel is rated at 3600, whereas the Sony 50” X90J OLED VA panel is rated at 5600,, almost double the rate of the Samsung.
Despite this, the complete lack of VRR within the Sony product (and the common perception that Sony have been basically lying to their customers re: VRR developments), caused me to buy the Samsung product over the Sony here in the UK 🇬🇧.
Had I been living in the USA 🇺🇸, because the US rating of the Samsung tv is so poor (1449 against Sony’s 5600), and the Sony product lacks any form of VRR, I would have bought neither and gone for the LG, taking the Bucks 💵 I would have saved to buy a decent Sound Bar.

While I appreciate the wider viewing angle on the Samsung the dirty screen effect concerns me. I watched the Samsung when an NFL game was on. Beautiful picture indeed. I would suspect the dirty screen effect might show up more during a hockey game but there was no sign of it on football. By the same token the Sony also looked very good on the Football game. Seeing these TVs in person is big. I suspect the Sony might have an edge in the reliability department. Too many choices out there lol. Thank you for this review.

Thank you for the great video. Watching this in March 2022 and I want to replace my almost 10 year old LG 47LM615S, I assume that both TVs will be a huge improvement over what I have now. I just wonder how relevant Dolby Vision support really is compared to HDR10 and HDR10+ ... Right now my old, trustworthy LG has none of all those features, it even is edge-lit.
For someone with the following use-case, does anyone of you have a suggestion what to choose, maybe even a completely different brand? 30% TV, 40% streaming content (Netflix, Prime), 20% Gaming, 10% Sports.
Console right now is Xbox One X, but will be upgraded to Series X this year and sooner or later there will also be a PS5. Not playing competetively, just for fun, maybe coop multiplayer. Never used the game mode on my old LG anyways.
Also, what can be said about the support of the software? I tend to keep my TV for a long time and don't want to be forced into buying a set-top box after 3 years just because Tizen or Google TV or whatever system is being dumped by its company. This is somewhat looking into the crystal ball, but how did companies handle this in the past? My old LG is basically just a big screen without any smart functions. I can do everything via the Xbox, but having the apps natively in the TV is nice.

Couple honest criticisms here. With how long 4K TVs have been out, it's time that you have a rating for upscaling. The biggest part of Sony's R&D is upscaling. Watching a 720p sports broadcast looks better on Sony TVs every single time compared to equally priced Samsungs. Also, picking VRR support as important for gaming but not picking Dolby Vision as important for HDR Movies is an unfair handicap on the Sony. Working in the industry, I would say Dolby Vision is just as (if not, more) important for HDR as VRR is for gaming.

It seems the X90J is even better than this year's Sony. I'm getting one, the price is down quite a bit, and it's still the best mid-range TV. I had about an hour crash-course with a TV tech guy, side by side, just turning the TVs on with the white logos on the black background, you can see the very little bleaching on the Sony, in comparison to the Samsung and LG. It was a clear indicator of what was to come. The colors are more true in the Sony, nothing is crushed, you see details on the shadows the other's can't even display. And the cherry on top, the TV tech guy had a pen with several videos, some with the crappiest frame rate and resolution. The Sony processing engine was a sight to behold, none of the other TVs was able to deal with that awfull sample video, it was a video from a moving car filming the sidewalk, the Sony did some witchcraft and suddenly you could see the store's names and the people's faces. It's all about what frames the TV inserts in between the original frames. Testing then side by side was an eye opener, I know which one I'll be taking home.

    • @antoniomargallo5317
      @antoniomargallo5317 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I just got an X90J for 700 euros. You know it's serious when you go through the menus and see the IMAX settings. This TV is a beast, the contrast and the deep blacks, unmatchable. I recall a review on which the guy stated that he tried his favourite movie on the Sony, and for the first time he saw something that was hidding in the shadows, it wasn't relevant to the movie, but he felt like he was "robbed" of something because he never saw it in the previous viewings. You can see it on this video, can you notice the weeds growing on the left train track, or the railing on that small building on the left? Better details in shadows and deeper blacks, both things are done amazingly because they don't even interfere with one another, it's really good.

U7G is also a shitty IPS panel..
Only proper choice would be the U8G..
The fact Hisense call it "gaming" model and some people fall for that marketing. Sigh...

@@loki76 yeah you guys know EVERYYYYTHINNNNG about tv's even ones not reviewed yet. I guess you might be even shittier when it comes to knowing tv's than Hisense is as tv maker 😁😂

@@phaedrussocrates7636 It's a simple fact though. The U8G is the better choice.
Even that TV is questionable when it comes to Hisense quality. Who knows long term.
U7G is an ips panel it is not a 'gamers TV' that is marketing BS to sell an inferior panel they offer. To make it sound better than it is.

SONY has finally stepped up the plate and dominated 2021 towards end of year. LG was crushing with the C1 and G1 series for OLED. However, since both Samsung and Sony have worked together back again to make the chipset and display panel, SONY BRAVIA AJ90 has beaten LG’s C1 and G1 OLED.
Panasonic LZ2000 OLED is still king but is only available in Europe and Asia. Very sad.

I’m buying the COSTCO X90CJ 75 inch that automatically comes a whopping total of 5 year warranty. Costco tend to change the model so you can’t exchange or price match. I hate that. The X90CJ that Costco is same model as X90J that Best Buy sells. Costco is king of selling TVs at very good price and warranty full coverage is a plus!

I have heard that Direct Led panels show white spots after a year or so and I am confused SAMSUNG Q80A is a Direct LED pannel or Full Array panel as it's written Direct Full Array panel in their official website. Planning for the 50-inch model a VA pannel..!!

I bought the Samsung Q80a 65 and a new 4K second generation Apple TV. I just got it three days ago and then found this channel. I realize I didn’t need the $200 Apple TV because it has an app, but I generally watch TH-cam premium. Let me ask this should I Bring back the Apple TV and the Samsung for a refund at Best Buy and get the Sony instead?

I like Q85A has more colors than X90J, but it;s $400 more on costco for 75"... hard to choose but use more in bright room so probably Q85A wins... but at a slight cost.

So am i to understand that x90j performs better for sports if you are watching head on? You ended the sports section by saying the anti glare and wide viewing angles win the contest for q80a yet it has a wirse dirty screen? Kind of an arbitrary call, i would call it a tie, no?

Just a heads up. I have ruled out certain TV's because of their stands. I have a custom built AV cabinet that costs more than any 65" made yet it is not wide enough for some TVs. I would have bought the 65" Sony OLED but for the stand

So if we compare it with the samsung qn85a, is the sony xr90j successful in contrast and local dimming again. Does it fail until the q80a?

Are there different sets of stands for the Sony x90j? If I recall correctly, the standard feet look totally different and are positioned at the outer edges of the TV.
