  • Sony has released their new entry-level OLED, the A8H. It’s a great improvement over last year’s model, the Sony A8G, but is it good enough to beat out the competition?

    We’ve retested the A8H and have been able to force a 1440p @ 60Hz resolution from our Xbox One S, but it still isn’t exposed in the EDID and when forced from a PC the TV information shows the signal is upscaled to 4k instead. 1440p @ 120Hz also doesn’t work, as every second frame is skipped.

    • @princewillip
      @princewillip 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For gaming I wonder if nvidia fast sync turned on may help get closer to 1440p at 120hz? Did you guys use CRU utility to mess about with the refresh rates? I haven’t seen anyone mention that 1080p @ 120hz is supported, thanks! This will be more than enough for entry level graphics cards (my 1660ti just hits this with call of duty on high graphic settings). To be honest the only thing I want is the 1440p @ 120hz as I think decent 4k@120hz for gameplay on ‘ultra’ graphic settings is a long way off for pc gamers at an affordable price.

And when I looked what that is, what I found is that it is sort of a quantum dot filter for colour enhancement. So can we say that Sony basically already has QD OLED? The pixels on a 4k monitor are much smaller than the pixels on a 4k TV. It's harder for the camera to get a clear picture of the smaller pixels. Also lots of monitors have a hazy matte coating, whereas most TVs have a smooth glossy coating.

I was really looking forward to a direct comparison with the A9G...not the A8G. Vincent Teoh (HDTV test) and other reviewers give the edge to the A8H over the A9G, due to the improved motion(BFI @ 120) implementation and better shadow details.

      I don't have either TV myself, but I am in the same boat as you and keep leaning to one and then the other (there's a lot of conflicting opinions). A8H, supposedly has best picture quality overall, albeit very close to the CX. It's best for movies/series, but would also work great with next gen gaming, as long as you don't mind the lack of HDMI 2.1 (4K/120fps).
      LG, on the other hand, apparently gets brighter in most scenes and has a lot more gaming features, like the HDMI 2.1 I mentioned earlier. It also supports VRR, which eliminates screen tearing, however this produces raised black levels, which is not why people buy OLED. The VRR issue, is apparently a hardware issue also, so a firmware update won't fix it.
