He said fire to disable impulse thrusters. Maybe that means overloading the shields around the nacelles rather than directly hitting the rear of the saucer.
@@annoyed707 Oh boy, you've got me started. Here we go, with an upfront apology for how long-winded I'm about to get. You may know the following, I don't know, I'm going into detail for everyone reading. So we're establishing first that Warp 1, the base warp speed, is Speed of Light or c. No matter how the warp speed charts have been rated and redesigned over the years, it all starts at c, Warp Drive is designed for FTL travel. Secondly, we're going to establish that Impulse Drive is specifically sublight, or relativistic speed. Relativistic speed means that the closer something travels to c, it experiences an effect known as time dilation. Time dilation is a phenomenon where the surrounding time/space moves faster than the object. In essence, the faster or longer something is traveling toward c, the further into the future it is pushed as its time slows down ("Planet of the Apes" phenomenon). In Star Trek, ships' Impulse Drives have limiters in place to keep ships and crews below speeds where time dilation would start to become a major factor. Limiters on Impulse Drive are necessary because time dilation starts to really kick between 1/3 and 1/2 c. There's two predominant theories toward reaching FTL at relativistic speeds. First is the closer to c you're traveling, the more energy cost to travel faster. Second is due to Newton's 3rd Law of Motion, any force is cumulative in the absence of external opposing force (no friction in space). Theoretically, the plasma release of the Impulse Drive can be used to increase a ship's speed infinitely until the force generated by the drive is negligible to the forward momentum established. Hence, the limiters level of the drive output to keep the ship from traveling beyond .25c. Third, Warp Drive negates the effect because the ship does not travel at relativistic speeds that would cause dilation. What happens is the warp nacelles generate a static warp shell around the ship (creating a bubble of "normal space" so the ship isn't torn apart), while simultaneously creating a tunnel effect ahead of the ship where points in space are continuously folded together. While the ship itself travels at relativistic speed inside the warp shell, the effect of the warp tunneling causes it to travel FTL. The further the ship projects the tunnel ahead, the more space that folds, the faster the ship's effective speed. Now that we have all that established. Is it possible for Warp Drive to be used at sublight speeds? First we're going to turn to TMP. Early into Enterprise's launch from Spacedock, Kirk orders the ship to Warp .5. However, it's also made clear that this is Impulse Power, not Warp Drive, and you can see the glow increase from the Impulse engine while the warp coils in the nacelles remain darkened. Later, the Enterprise accelerates toward Warp 1, reaching Warp .8 while still moving at relativistic speed, before the telltale warp effect occurs and Warp 1 is announced. While the ship would be experiencing time dilation at this relativistic speed, it's still a little less than 2x, meaning the few seconds they were accelerating would only offset them by double the time. 10 seconds in the ship would be 20 seconds in surrounding space. Not too terrible at a low interval, but you wouldn't want to be traveling for long periods of time at that speed. Next, we're going to look at First Contact. Now, the Phoenix travels at "warp speed" for probably about 10-12 seconds. Judging by the size of the Earth, they stopped three, maybe four times that of Lunar orbit. Lunar orbit is averaged around 1.28 light-seconds from Earth, meaning if they stopped at 4 times the distance of Lunar orbit, should have been a little over 5 seconds. Not 10. Meaning the Phoenix was actually traveling at sublight speed through its warp flight, about .5c. That's assuming that my guesstimating based on visual cues is anywhere close to accurate, of course. Short answer is, yes, at least rudimentary warp drives are probably capable (read: limited) to traveling at sublight speeds. Refined drives capable of reaching light speed and beyond possibly are capable of dialing back to traveling at sublight, but there isn't a definitive instance of that happening.
I knew this was gonna get mentioned. If you remember, they stated that they knocked out both impulse *and* warp, which was also shown on the display panel
