    The VW isn’t even under 10k
    The Kia is faster, has 5 seats, a 7 year warranty, is newer than the VW, has proper windows.
    Fifth Gear chose the shiny VW badge there.

    Up 4.5 out of 5 No only 2 seats in back. Kia 4 out of 5, 3 seats.

    • @siraff4461
      @siraff4461 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      3 seats means more insurance (a big thing for a lot of young drivers) and try using all three. Three adults would be sardines while three child seats or boosters simply don't fit which means its only of any use if you have three kids who all just got out of boosters.
      The extra belt can be nice in a pinch but its not really something worth designing the car around. It also compromises outer seat design which is why they agreed the two in the up! were larger.
      Really though if you want a 5 seater go for something larger. It wil be safer, more comfortable, easier to use child seats and generally just better. Its also likely to have a much larger boot which if you've got 5 in the car often will make a difference too.

      @@supaahflyy By the way I think the Kia is the better car. Just that 3 seats in a tiny car doesn't make as much sense as two.
      Now having a spare belt in the 2 seat config would make sense but designing it as a 3 seat compromises all the rear seats for the sake of a centre one which is semi-unusable at best.

It has no grab handles both front or rear, no proper windows in the back as opposed to KIA and also KIA has better build and materials along with the interior design. It offers 7 year guarantee which makes the VW's so called reliability (if you think so) out of equation.

    If I'm in the market for these cars, im not coming into the market with much money to begin with. So that means what I value is value, peace of mind that comes with a long warranty, low servicing costs, low running costs, low insurance costs. Practicality would be second, I'm not buying a sports car, I want the one that I can drive to and from work/school/get around. Somewhere down near the bottom would be build quality, yeh sure I want a car with better build quality, but at this price point that's not a huge issue if comparing two cars and the build quality isn't vastly different.
    With those parameters thought about, why anyone in this hypothetical situation would choose the VW I have no idea. The only reason you'd chose it is for the apparently superior badge presence and it's said by someone with lots more money that can afford for things to go wrong after warranty periods....which is NOT the target market for this segment of car

    What about equipment? Safety?
    The Kia offers better equipment in the midrange model (like EX) and It feels like a bigger car, the UP missing the central A\C vents in the dashboard, something that can be very annoying in an hot country, the door cover in the Picanto fully covers the door and there are more things.
    Also, the Picanto available with an automatic gear box, while the UP available with the ASG gear box (with single clutch), which is less smoother than the standart automatic gearbox in the Kia.
    Where I live, the Picanto offered with Autonomous braking even in the lower spec model. It's a big success here, It's the most sold car in the Mini category in our coutry.

  • @lethe56
    @lethe56 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    So let me get this straight: The VW up! gets you less boot space, less seats, it's not quite as fun to drive (which I know for having hired the both of them), it's more expensive, and you get less kit as standard (I mean, if you're willing to splurge a little bit more - and I mean VERY LITTLE - you get loads more equipment in the Kia, too), and yet the up! WINS the lifestyle test? Oh and btw, why is the styling an element of the practicality test? You make no sense.
    Oh, and good job on the dreariness. Why you guys were never as popular as Top Gear, I'll never know...

    Kia is the winner for me as the VW UP, is just a rebadged ARGO. Also Kia gets 7 year warranty, Kia’s not going to give you that if they didn’t build their cars well. Also they didn’t give the MG much of a chance. I think the whole test was pointless as they were always going to put VW first.

On the other hand I daily drive a 257k mile 19 year old Camry with zero problems. I got 33mpg in the Camry the last road trip.

      I have the MG3 myself. It has a 7 year warranty too in the UK atleast. My one is a second hand 19 plate. Aside from the previous owners parking ticket being stuck in the dashboard, which I got sorted out easily enough, it's been great. Fast compared to the competitors, 5 seconds faster 0-60 than the equivalent base fiesta, good handling too. There's apparent wind noise at high speed on the motorway/highway, but even so, overall I'm very pleased. Not that lap times would matter in everyday use or a 5th seat in the back, which is actually same wide as in a 4 seater (so you can't actually fit more person), BUT the 7 years warranty does also make it cheaper on long term, which is especially important for buyers of this segment.
    The higher equipment level on the KIA is not that much more expensive, while it gives you comfort functions like the VW would never give in this class.

    In 2002 i bought a brand new Kia Sedona 2.9 turbo diesel.......the plan was to find a people carrier that we would keep for 10 yrs........
    Looked at the rivals, and the Kia was the cheapest by far, and even then had the best warranty.
    Kept it for 12 yrs and 178 thousand miles, we drove it to the south of France packed to the gunnels with 3 kids and roofbox - 5 yrs in a row.
    Faults in the yrs of ownership:
    1 wheel bearing ( after 8 yrs)
    Alternator ( after 11 yrs)
    1 door handle (7 yrs).
    So, in all that time it never needed anything other than maintenance, and was still on the original gearbox, exhaust system and clutch.
    It was never a drivers vehicle, but I didn't buy it for that - it was just so reliable. As the kids grew up we downsized and bought a 2nd hand Kia Carens which also proved to be reliable - that was eventually part ex'd for a Suzuki SX4.

    Some major things every reviewer forgets to include in their budjet car reviews are (1) Crash Resistance of Chassis, Not amount of airbags but the crumple zones, quality of metal used, thickness etc. (2) because they are budjet cars, most likely persons would be doing a bit of DIY and repair so how easy it is to do simple tasks like oil change, filter change, Sparkplugs etc.(3) does it come with a DVD screen or display with a rear view camera standard or how simple would it be to add. (4) How well do the factory headlamps show on the road at night in the city as well as lesser roads also is it easy to change a lightbulb in the headlamp or does the bumper have to be removed etc. These are the real deal items that buyers need to know. Just because they don't have a lot to spend on a vehicle does not mean that they should get screwed by only having to resort to the dealer for regular car maintainance etc Plus the world would be in a recession for a while following this current pandemic and most people would opt to do easy repair work themselves and they are looking to save money for the essentials like food.
