Drifting on Helical LSD - Day of Biggest Improvement with These Drills

  • Looking to improve your drifting? Work on these drills at your local skidpad - they have helped my control a lot! It's good to have a basic understanding on how to slide / drift sideways before doing these drills:
    1) Fishtailing - Slide the rear end of the car, then swing it to the opposite direction. Consider this as one cycle. Work up to continuing this to two cycles in a continuous motion without spinning out.
    2) Flirting - Look for a wall of cones on the skidpad. This can be done with a single cone too. Practice sliding the rear end as close as possible to the cone(s). Start with a few car lengths of distance between the cones and your rear end, then gradually move to within a few feet.
    3) Kissing - Like flirting but for the front end. Practice sliding so that the front end almost touches the cone. If your front bumper can touch it without knocking it over, you're super.
    4) Recovery (optional) - If you lose control of the car and spin-out, try to immediately regain control, continue the drift and kiss the next the cone. This is a bonus drill if you don't mind shredding your tires more than you should :)
    5) Linking - This is the final test, which can be tough to do! After you've completed the above drills, it's time to do them all in one run, preferably on a drifting layout with cones. Try to connect all the turns within the layout in one continuous sequence of drifts, while implementing all of the earlier skills. Sometimes, you'll have to fishtail until the next the corner, such as on a straight, to keep drifting.

    Using this approach, I made the biggest progress! On this day, you'll see me practicing this approach on two different skidpads at Thunderhill Raceway Park. Let me know your thoughts and post any comments!
    On another note, this is my final event on Ohlins R&T coilovers. I've since upgraded to MCS singles which are on another level of performance. Stay tuned! New videos with the new suspension will be uploaded over the next month :)

      should put underdrive powersteering pulley on, power steering really just allows you to do thing the car doesnt want to do, like that chattering when you understeer it hard asf for no reason, will help you feel what the front tires are doing and what they can do

      With the current setup, there’s no chattering and the steering is really smooth. The MCS dampers combined with the M3 bits + camber plates take the car to another level. The factory power steering parts are fine and I can feel exactly what the front tires are doing :)
      I’ll still curious about this underdrive pulley and will look into it nonetheless!

    Around half way into watching I noticed I was clenching my butt 😬Nice work mate, always enjoy your content.

      Hahaha! Butt clenching = mission accomplished I guess! Glad to hear mate 👊 Thanks for the feedback.

    Love the driving, I gotta find somewhere I can do all this safely in my own car but there are only a few spots in the uk. Been a little while since I commented last but I’ve moved to an M240i and fitted a quaife diff, MSS springs and have some F80 control arms and tension struts to sharpen up the front end. From the fleeting sideways action I’ve had in the car I can tell it won’t disappoint but I just need that seat time now. Stay sideways boss 👊🏾

      Cheers! You must find a safe place to test your new setup 👊

      @@Milkywave By any chance when you installed your stoptech big brake kit did you have to do any coding for the bigger brakes at all? Thanks in advance for any information.
      Just installed f80 m3 380mm brakes on my 135i, rbf 600 fluid, ss lines, ferodo 2500 pads. Brakes stop fine but I feel like they don't have initial bite at all compared to my 335i where I barely tap the brakes and it stops really easy.

    • @Milkywave
      @Milkywave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, no coding at all. The bite of the BBK is actually similar to stock. The most notable improvement is pedal feel - very firm and much less travel.
      Brake pad compound could account for some of the difference in bite though.

    • @in54ne82
      @in54ne82 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Milkywave That's exactly what they feel like now. Good to know you had the same experience. Possible brake pad compound too.

      🤙 Did you have to install the F80 spindles for that?

    How does it feel drifting a torsen diff? Have you drifted a plated diff to compare?

    • @Milkywave
      @Milkywave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Plated diff engages more quickly for easier oversteer and feels better overall for drifting. The torsen diff feels smoother but due to the nature of how it instantly biases torque to the wheel that has less traction, the rear wants to regain grip very quickly - therefore more corrective steering and/or throttle input is necessary to maintain the drift IMO. If this wasn’t a dual duty street car, I’d go to a locking / plated diff !

    Just ordered one of these helical diff off mfActory for my n55 swapped e46!!!! How’s yours holding up so far? Or did you switch?

      @Milkywave  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Nice!! It’s been holding up great, built like a tank!

      @@Milkywave how about the engine? N55 have the oil starvation issue?
      You using a baffled pan?
      Blocking up the oil piston squirters? How are you getting away with it lol?

    • @Milkywave
      @Milkywave  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The N54 has been rock solid! The baffled pan is only needed on the N55
