BMW 135i vs. McLaren 675LT - Proof Driver Mod is the Best Upgrade

  • McLaren 675LT refuses to let my BMW pass…
    Yet it was still no less fun being behind it! It's a privelege and honor to share the track with these supercars.
    The McLaren driver was shown the blue flag [0:25] to yield and move aside for my BMW after tailing for a few laps and getting close. It's possible he didn't see the flag or realize anyone was on his tail. There were a few opportunities for a pass, but that power! Quite amazing to behold.
    Watch the McLaren 675LT practically disappear on the straights with its 666 hp versus my 300 hp. Combined with its superior cornering ability and lighter weight (400lbs less), it surely can leave my car in a world of dust after one or two corners, but the driver was likely exercising some caution on his $350,000+ toy...while I was exercising as much fun as possible out of the 135i :)
    Just one McLaren driver and one BMW driver having lots of fun. However, one of them is arguably having a little more fun... Enjoy the chase!
    (Please note this was an HPDE in the advanced open passing run group at Sonoma Raceway. Due to the nature of this event, I maintained a safe distance in the corners, avoided making any aggressive moves to pass, and used less throttle and/or more brakes than necessary entering Turns 6, 10, 3, 3A, & 4. In the interest of safety, I chose to wait for a point-by from the McLaren driver due to the impressive power of his car and in case he was not aware of me.
    At the beginning of this session, the McLaren was further ahead by at least 6-7 seconds as I take the first lap easy. The video starts after I caught up which took 4-5 laps. Based on the recovered gap between us, I ran at a pace by an average of 1-2 seconds faster per lap in this particular session.)
    BMW 135i setup: stock tune, 235/265 Hankook R-S3, Ohlins R&T, Quaife LSD, M3 arms/bushings, Vorshlag camber plates at -2.2, PFC-08 pads with RB stainless steel pistons + Castrol SRF. Dyno at 270hp/272tq at the wheels. Weight at 3520lbs with driver.
    Cooling: Distilled water as engine coolant plus 2 bottles of Redline WaterWetter.
    Cameras: GoPro HERO5 for the main footage, HERO4 Black for steering, HERO4 Silver for rear view, and HERO3+ Black for pedals.

      Clearly. But he would better be training in your car before taking this thing to the track: he will not improve that fast in a car he is scared of. 1. He doesn't take the race line. 2. he's afraid of the speed at the end of straights and breaks way too early and too hard, then he needs to accelerate way harder than he should (for his level) because he probably tries to make "good" laps, then he goes too fast, gets scared, breaks too early... ->start over again. I have started trackdays for 6 months now, in a understeering 964 c4, it's fun but with some experienced driver giving you advice on track, I would gain like 6-7 seconds a lap, then with the same guy pushing me a bit (by following on track with his tracktoy) I would gain another 5 seconds, to reach +4 seconds on his best lap. That's how you improve. First I thought "dude I can't go faster on this corner", at the end of the day I went 15seconds faster than in the first/second session...

    • @Milkywave
      @Milkywave  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Milkywave Not sure if you're aware yet, but the N54 has throttle smoothing tables built in. You can set them (eliminate them) so there's no delay between your foot and the throttle. It's sluggish by design to make it comfortable but not what we want for high performance driving. There's actually a lot of electronic nannies built it that can be turned off that help tremendously on these cars.

    • @Milkywave
      @Milkywave  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Well the truth is, at the start of the session, he was about 6-7 seconds ahead (more details in the description). After a few laps I was right there and caught up as shown in the video (he was about 1-2 seconds slower per lap).
      I applied the brakes much earlier a few times and took a more conservative line in the corners to keep a safe distance. So there was an impact on pace.
      I think it’s best to let cars on your tail to pass and if you have to pass them again, no worries! But I can understand the reasons why a driver may not want to. It was a super fun session regardless, and the driver not letting me pass made the video more interesting LOL.

      do you mean that as in the marshals are mic'd up together? AFAIK they only blue flag based on line of sight, description said the BM had been tailing you for a few laps and the miata wasnt even in view when both cars went past the post? or am i missing something :S - either way, your car is a beaut :D

    • @bayareanady4053
      @bayareanady4053 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      all the marshals are mic'd up. that's how they coordinate yellow, black, pass, checkered flags, etc. I have a lot of videos but I'm extremely careful in posting them. Ive seen a pass flag in the past and I look in my rear view mirror and I don't see a car (car was passed just a few moments before which was not even in the line of sight of that particular flagger. During this track day on the second session I did a 180 degree spin and the car wasn't feeling right. In this particular session I got off early because I believe it was the last session and I wasn't trusting the car (spin and check engine light).
      Sonoma raceway is a funny place on a normal track day. If there is traffic in front of you then you have to measure yourself. If I have traffic in front of me after turn 11 headed towards the main straight then I can't go flat out because I'll hit 130 mph at start/finish and I'm not going to use the brakes and I'll catch up and rear end any car in front of (don't want to brake as the car is turning). This is how it works at sonoma. On a regular track day you can't just go flat out each lap and slower cars will ultimately catch up to you because you are going to get stuck behind someone at a different section.
      Go back through this guys videos when he is showing a comparison of two go pro's and one of them is when he is behind me. It's pretty easy to just post a video and say whatever a person wants.

    Saw this on Instagram.
    Something to consider, these "chase down" videos don't promote the right DE behavior. If he is in your way, hot pit in and re-enter the track. Everyone in DE should be driving at a level where they are in complete control of the car which is different for different people.
    If you want to race, come join one of the sanctioning bodies and race. Then the "chase" are similarly classed cars and drivers all looking to win

    • @holygreener
      @holygreener 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Matthew Robinson That makes sense but going along with your line of thought - isn't it etiquette (or "the right DE behavior") for the McLaren to have let the Bimmer pass to begin with? I'd think the initial gesture of courtesy lies with the car who can't shake or dust you at the corners. If you watch the vid in its entirety, the driver was clearly flagged to move out the way. As for racing for wins - the poster clearly states he was having fun. But even fun can be hindered by supercar ego.

    You should learn how to downshift properly with double-clutching, if you want to show it to the the world. Throttle blips with pressed clutch are half useless and make people feel you don't control the car entirely. There is enough time to do it perfectly...

    • @Milkywave
      @Milkywave  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Oh darn, you noticed! That was just a test to see if anyone noticed or cared xD
      In all seriousness, that was an unintentional touch of the throttle. This was my first event trying this double-clutching business, and you are absolutely correct - not necessary. I still have lots and lots of learning to do! But I think the people who do it just like to hear the exhaust. I know I love hearing mine...
      I believe showing the world will only help me improve, and I can’t be thankful enough for this wonderful opportunity to share this video with so many :)
