Is the Panasonic S5II worth it? | Late to the party!

- Always fashionably late, welcome to my casual first impressions of the Lumix S5II camera by Panasonic. In this video I detail why I waited and wether it was worth the wait. We talk auto-focus, open-gate and being a split system photographer. I also have some exciting news so stick around!

I have been involved with photo and video for coming up to 15 years! In that time I have owned 1 sony camera, 4 Canon cameras and 8 Panasonic cameras. I currently create with a Panasonic S5II and Canon R7. In this video and the next few videos I'll detail how and why I became a split system creator, the pro's and the cons.

I have subscribed! I hope you do really well with your business and your channel, being a youtuber it can be very rewarding and challenging. I too have recently purchased the S5II from WEX, a great camera. Kep up the good work.

This is certainly a great camera for the price. Autofocus is good in video (finally) and IBIS is great for a Full Frame camera (even slightly better than the "big" S1).
Image quality is good but not as good as before compared to the first gen (S1/S5). Most profiles (not V-Log) have bad details rendering especially in low light light. V-Log is really a must on this camera because other profiles are just very bad about detail rendering. But even with V-Log, image quality is not quite as good as before because of oversharpening and slightly less details. Panasonic said the DFD will harm image quality, it was true. I hope the S1II will get the same image quality as before.
Thanks for your comment. I know the sensor has performed ever so slightly worse on tests due to the addition of PDAF but I think the trade off is small. But I have a lot of testing to do, especially in the non V-log modes. 🙂
Autofocusing photography is suboptimal. The camera refuses to focus about 30% of the time. The contrast based DFD is vastly superior to the S5ii PDAF.

Thanks for this video. Which camera would you use between the s5ii and the r7 if you filmed mostly yourself relying on autofocus and navigating the camera through the camera app?
Hey, thanks for your question. I've not used the most current version of the app for either version unfortunately. Previous experience has been poor with all brands but I can certainly look into making a comparison video.
Either camera would be a great tool to shoot TH-cam videos. If I was pushed, I'd edge for the S5II. It punches way above it's weight. 🙂

I love the camera but one thing that makes me not to buy it is the lack of 4k 120fps in the camera. As a music video producer I really want it to be there
The 1080p 120fps upscaled (or super scaled in davinci resolve) looks so good
Hello, I am a Lumix S5II user. I have a question that no one has been able to answer. How can I see the exposure meter on the screen while recording video? I would greatly appreciate an answer if one exists. Thank you so much.
Hi, I'd need a bit more info about your recording set up. But the expo meter is usually represented as a number at the bottom centre of the screen. If you are correctly exposed it should read "0" if your are unde exposed it will read as "-1" or lower and if you are over exposed it will read "+1" or higher.
There are also a plethora of exposure tools built into the camera. Many of which I think are better than the exposure meter. I'd use the following tools in conjunction with the exposure meter.
- Spot metering
- Zebras
- Waveform
- Histogram
The easiset to learn is the histogram. But spot metering will ensure you have the correct exposure on the most important part of your subject. Hope this helps :)

Learn how to use zebras! Set one to 85% and crank your exposure until just before you see your zebras. Sam Holland has a good video on it
