When I repaired holes in my Mustangs drivers side floor pan, I cut the rust like you did and bought a cookie metal sheet and JB Welded it to the still good metal where I had cut... So far so good ! I hate welding thin metal... As a matter of fact I suck at welding thin metal... I then put construction polyurethane sealant and a coat of POR-15 on and under the new floor pan, Been holding up good for almost 3 years now.

I bought a 1987 Mk1b in December, I'm basically new to mechanics of any form. The car has similar problems and needs wheels archs re-welding, as the previous filler job is to a naff standard. This series is incredibly helpful for me and makes the project slightly less daunting. Keep the videos coming!!

It is easier but it’s not the way to do it tho.
If you weld from inside then you’ve got a gap outside between floor and patch that water will track into and rot the floor again. Even if you fill the gap with sealer it can flex and crack and let water back in again. A seam weld won’t 👍🏻
