RED Komodo vs Panasonic Lumix S5II - RED Raw vs ProRes Raw - Full Frame vs Super 35

- This week I put the RED Komodo up against the Panasonic Lumix S5II. Because the Panasonic is full frame I used the Samyang 35mm and on the Komodo, I used the 24mm to try and best match the field of view.
We also put RED Raw up against ProRes Raw and whilst ProRes Raw is a fantastic addition with a paid upgrade it's unfortunate that as of now Davinci Resolve doesn't support it and Premier has limited options with only an exposure slider and log profiles to select from. However, if you edit in Final Cut you get a much larger selection of options.
Both cameras are incredibly impressive. The Lumix produces beautiful, natural colours straight out of the camera, while the Komodo delivers incredible clarity.
Make sure you subscribe because, In a few weeks, I'll be releasing a video comparing the Komodo to the Sony FX6. It's sure to be a good one.

Lumix looks much more cinematic
Totally, but I wonder how much of that comes down to the difference between the lenses used between the two? The lighting seems more diffused across the surface of the lens on the Lumix whereas on the RED we're getting these super defined lens flares which contributes to those really dark shadows and thus an overall higher sense of contrast. I suspect the hardware between the two isn't all that different.
No
@@GreatNon-pd5ig are you the one, that always says: "No" ?
@@Max-mh5yo No
The Lumix is a real powehouse when you consider the size and cost. The image looks great. Would love to see how the BRAW from it looks with a video assist.
I think if you edit in davinci resolve then the video assist is the way to go. But I do think that these editing programs have a responsibility to support professional codecs. The video assist vs the ninja I’ve had them both and I love the build quality of the assist but you seem to get a lot more options on the ninja. But I would love to do a comparison between braw and ProRes raw
There's a guy who posted some braw s5iix footage a few months ago. Looked great. Handled detail so much better than the other codecs. I'll be investing in a video assist soon for sure.
@@robertdouble559 I do love blackmagic raw and how flexible it is. Works well in most editing programs and its great that the video assist works with SD cards
The Lumix has better low light equaling better shadows. You may need to add some contrast to the Lumix but they are back and forth as far as which on looks better. Some of the clips were out of focus slightly but I’ve decided the the S1 and Pocket 4k are my cameras of choice.
I paid $1000 for each and can’t be happier!
This is my first Panasonic, I’ve herd good things about the S1 I’ve never used the 4k but I’ve just been grading some footage from in on a project and it seems to be very similar to the 6k in terms of look. That’s sounds like a great deal man
Great Video. I am curious if slightly increasing contrast and saturation internally with lumix would be a closer match?
did you have a promist or sth similiar on the lumix? because all its footage has this bloom. makes the comparison a bit unfair imo
just wow, 1st side by side i said "this one looks so much better to me must be the RED" but oh lord it was the s5ii
Sorry i am not so fluent in english, but please : did you edit braw with resolve for fair-comparison ? Or just with Première? Thanks a lot
Great comparison mate. I’ve got the S5 and love it. If I could, I’d get the S5ii to go with it as a second cam. My B cam is currently the GH5 which I still love too! Good times in the world of indie filmmaking 👍🏼
Thanks! This is my first Panasonic and I’m super impressed. I never got to use the GH5 but I’ve seen a lot of great footage from the camera. Really nice colours with the Panasonic cameras
New Subscriber. Super cool idea, enjoyed it.
Thanks for the Sub Mark, really appreciate it and glad you enjoyed the video
Is it possible to share links to the downloadable footage? Thanks
Great test. Can you upload and share some of these footage so we can compare on our end? I have Blackmagic Video Assist with my S5 and S1, but thinking about Ninja V and it's interesting how it's compares to red in post. Redcode is crazy flexible.
I can do that yes. I’m just moving house but I should have my internet up and running in the next few days so I’ll upload some clips and post the link here
Interesting test. I just received my Panasonic S5IIx yesterday. Your test makes it unnecessary for me to test it vs my Komodo… but I am curious how it measures up to my Canon Eos R3, as both are mirrorless bodies.
The Panasonic is an interesting camera.
It’s a great camera and with the internal ProRes the S5IIx is a really great camera for the price. I would have gone for that one but back in February when I got mine I was too impatient to wait. But I would love to try the X
The lumix win! the colour is so great and so cinematic!
RED image superior in every way.. DR Colour etc. Are you using the Samyang on the S5? It has a low contrast haze to the image?
Seems like you shot the Komodo with heavy ND filtering with no IR CUT. The colors on the Komodo footage look weird and its because you have a LOT of IR Pollution. Take a look at the skirt of the lady @ 8:13 (it looks reddish/brown) because of all the IR pollution, now look at the same shot with the Lumix @ 8:10, it looks black as it should.. Also the trees look yellowish, also because of the IR pollution. You need to use ND with IR CUT or a separate IR CUT filter on the Komodo. I have a Komodo and a V Raptor, both of the suffer from IR Pollution when Heavy ND is used with no IR CUT. Cheers!
Yes I did and agreed as mentioned in the video it would be great to use some better NDs with IR cut in. The URSA minin used to have a similar problem with IR pollution but on that even when renting filters with the IR cut in never seemed to eliminate the problem entirely
@@thatcameranerd I hate when that happens. I have a RED Gemini as well and it does NOT suffer from IR Pollution even when using heavy ND with no IR CUT.
I have Komodo what's a good ir cut filter ? I have a 82mm format hi tech ir cut filter
I have fixed 82mm nd with mist filters but do u ever like using the ef to rf canon viable nd filters on Komodo ?
Thanx!
thats' a great compare!
the comodo - looks live a real camcoder near the real fullframe! :)
Hope people can see - the differens of the pictures!
That's realy great to see diffirent between fullframe and super 35 in a simmilar way - like that!
Thanx again!
Thanks so much 😁
Damn sure not a $4,000 difference
Hello could you send us the LUT that you added on the S5 II please, she is superb
Great video - surprised by the results. I highly recommend testing the VA. The raw on the S5iiX is equal to b-raw on the native Blackmagic cameras. If only the X had an OLPF!
Maybe I can get hold of a VA and do a comparison. I love BRAW I had the Pocket 6K for a few years and it was a great codec. I’d also love to see the internal ProRes on the S5iiX and how that holds up.
@@thatcameranerd Pro res won't look that different from internal - lots of owners of the S series have done that comparison - it's on when you get into PRR and B-raw that the results are drastically different :)
@@heroaomedia Really? I used to have a VA is should have kept it. Do you think the VA is a better option than the ninja?
@@thatcameranerd oh yeah, especially on the s5iiX, the braw is as good as PRR. Gerald Undone did a video on it.
I’ll never go back to shooting internal on the S1h
@@heroaomediaWhy would pro res not look that different? It's like 1.9gbps lol. And the black magic cameras usually don't have olpf filters either right?
Wait a minute, if i use the same lut on both camera footage then wouldn't both look exactly the same? Newbie here!!
Wow great video . LUMIX for the win 🥇
I'm still wondering why Red camera footage looks much more natural to the other brands. Their tone is warmer and they have some sort of organic look. I wonder if you can make a video how to make other video camera footage look like Red footage by grading them in post.
Another great vid Mark ! I'm a big lumix fan, but I do love the komodo, it just looks great and you get all that extra flexibility from red raw. I do think the difference in colours where big although it was most likely the filters as you mentioned at the start of the video, would love to see some example using the same nd filter
I would say there is definitely a big difference in the colour that comes of the cameras even without the filters. The Panasonic I think gives you some of the most natural colours straight out of the camera but like you said with the RAW on the Komodo’s you will get that flexibility in the grade. Really wish that ProRes raw was supported in davinci so that you could really push it. But until they decide to support it your kinda stuck with grading in premiere or converting to something like ProRes
@@thatcameranerd do you think they don't support it because of braw? Like they're pushing people to use the braw recorder for Panasonic or just shoot black magic ?
@@stuartswindellcampoy8483 I think it must have something to do with Braw. But as a colour grading/editing program it makes sense for them to support codecs so I think with time and if more cameras start using ProRes Raw they will eventually add support. Premiere Pro has very few options for what you can do with prores raw and if you want all the normal raw options then you would need to use final cut. But I saw the latest update of premiere has more support for arri raw now so its probably going to become more supported over time
@@thatcameranerd yeah true with time it should come to all editing programs , atleast that's all we can hope for
Beautiful dog.
Colours on the lumix look much nicer to me. I borrowed a komodo from a rental house to try out. The ND in the ef/rf mount sucked, colour shiftvall over the place. User experience with komodo was nowhere near as good as "real" red cameras. It felt really cheap. Would no doubt be better with a proper red touch screen rather than the cheapo monitor in the kit I borrowed. Was enough to convince me to buy an s5iix for a fraction of the price of the komodo. Will probably buy a 2nd one soon for b cam.
It's a shame they didn't allow you to connect the RED monitors to reduce the cables you need and to free up the SDI for a second monitor. I feel like they didn't think it would be so widely adopted which is probably why they included a lot of what was missing in the komodo x
dang! well TBH I love how Komodo look but Lumix is such a grate look.
I could get the lumix looking more like the RED, somehow all your saturation is gone on the S5. The fstops and shutter speeds are not equal between these cameras.
Red has more shadow detail, shadow is lifted too much with lumix....the shadow in red camera is clear, while lumix is fuzzy....and the highlight is waaay better with red, it has more dr up there too
I think the komodo could do better than this, but still a great comparison. Thanks for this, cool to see the S5ii prores RAW looking good! I think it will work fine next to my S1h.
And why put a blue / purple grade on outside Komodo footage? Did you get paid by Lumix? I don't get it.
lumix kicks ass but i dont know how good is it in photo mode....
ProRes RAW to CinemaDNG: rawconvertor or Assimilate Play Pro Studio.
Good option for people I think for some reason the s5m2 isn't supported in raw converter but the s5m2x is? I'm sure eventually it will be supported.
Seems the colours are not matched
This is crazy, I thought Camera A was the LUMIX, the Kornrolldo looked less cinematic almost like colors were a little baked in
The Komodo footage looks better. It has more dynamic range for sure
7:47 i actually like the A footage here better, am i alone in that haha, looks a little more filmic and softer more contrasty
Big up for the Freddy Krueger picture frame above your computer monitor.
I don't know if you can make it out but there is also a Freddy Krueger Figure on the shelf behind me
@@thatcameranerd I couldn’t see clearly, but I assume they were horror figures :p Nice!
Tbh I kinda like the lumix in most situations in this video I like the red for the color but the lumix quality
Today get 5iix love this body in arm. Thanks for the video
Amazing enjoy the camera, wish I had the x but I was to impatient 😂
I find the Red footage so much more gorgeous. I cannot wait for the day where we have one-click LUTs to mimic its look. It’s fascinating how little attention is given to Red’s insane colors. The footage has something going for it that’s as elusive and unquantifiable as the highly controversial film look.
cinematch...
@@prismcollectionmusic idk man . To what extent (im definitely open to trying it out until i can afford a Red) do you think Cinematch works emulating Red? I find the entire domain equally interesting but underwhelming . Curious if the Filmbox geniuses have a take on it. It does open a lot of doors and questions about semsor response and filter arrays, tho.
@@Callmedstone I've been emulating different cameras to get better starting points for grading. My favourite is C-log 2 on the C200. The Komodo one looks pretty good especially with your pick of transform LUT from the red website applied afterwards. I mostly like the canon better because it seems to work better with film colours. Oh and I tried a red komodo x in a shop and was able to match it really well to R6 and GH5
@@prismcollectionmusic So here's the multi-part, million dollar question: do these techniques only work when you're matching two cameras (and have the prerequisite shot from the Red); or can does it work without a referrence in the same way a LUT would work? Did you accomplish this by trial and error ? Is there a place where people discuss this? I got about 25% of the way through some of the liftgammagain etc 25 page long threads on film emulation and just noped out of it ultimately as it became challenging to discern pragmatism from mental chess. Alright, thanks for replying. Appreciate it. I find this stuff super fascinating yet very little discussion on it. Makes you wonder if this stuff would work matching Canon / Nikon stills to Hasselblad X or Leica S colors as well and whether the premium companies have more engineering or better specs out of the gate -- or if this is all doable with software tweaks - and to what extent. Thanks so much for the info, seriously
@@Callmedstone Hmm ...I think it's better with a reference but can work perfectly without, depending on the cameras in question. The things that might throw it off are different lenses/speedboosters and different dynamic range as far as I can tell.
LUMIX hands down
looks like his house is about to burn down. Maybe go less on the smoke.
Oh hello - my kinda stuff 🥰 where abouts in UK are you?
I’m based just north of London
why it's so smoky in your house =))
That haze just seems to follow me wherever I go 😂
You forgot contrast on the lumix side. funny
muddy shadows on S5 compared to RED
Lumix seems shitty, no contrast, milky. It's the plain lot or is it brought to rec709? If it's untouched V Log i can understand.
prores raw in resolve? - never gonna happen :)
Oh my... I prefer Lumix!
I genuinely this that the price to performance on the lumix is outstanding. You can get that camera on sale for around £1600. I can’t think of anything that comes close to it at that price. The Sony fx30 maybe but that’s over £2000 here in the uk
The first thing is to thank you for giving me a few words. I have the S1H, the S1 and I recently bought the S5IIx and I know what Lumix is capable of. But I couldn't imagine that a high-end camera like the Komodo would be worse for my taste...@@thatcameranerd
@davidsanchez1 when I got the 5sII the 5sIIx wasn’t out yet but part of me does wish I’d waited. Internal ProRes would have been great. I think the colours you get straight out of the lumix are some of my favourite. The ability to shoot pro-res raw is also a really nice option.
komodo need a ir pollution filter
Color science = lumix wins
komodo looks better
I'm pretty surprised....I liked the colors out of the komodo more but it was more of a preference and not like " oh the s5ii looks bad compared to the komodo".
Yea I think both cameras look great and they match up well I’ve been using the Lumix as a b-cam for a while now and they grade together really well
The S1H looks horrible.
That's because you can make any camera look bad.
