    Hi guys, in today's video I'll talk about the 5" Blackmagic video assist 12g. A great monitor that I love to use with my Panasonic Lumix S1 & S5, but also with cinema cameras that I often rent like the RED Komodo. Next to be a fantastic super bright monitor, with all the inputs and outputs I need, this is also a solid external recorder that let me film in BRAW or Apple ProRes HQ.
    - Positive Aspects of the BMD VA 5" = Small, Lightweight, Well Built, Bright Monitor (2500 Nits), 12g SDI IN-OUT, HDMI IN-OUT, 2 Battery Slots, SD and SSD Recording, BRAW & ProRes HQ Recording Options.
    - Negative Aspects of the BMD VA 5" = Lack of Audio Inputs (get the 7" if you need them), Digital Sharpening with Lumix S Cameras (not present on Fujifilm Cameras).
    If you would like to test some BRAW footage, in this link you can download the clips. Please don't forget to like and subscribe, it's a nice way to say thank you!

    With the S5II(x) Panasonic finally fixed their external RAW output.
    Each chroma channel gets delivered separately and without debayering which results in tons of texture, resolution and the addition of highlight recovery.
    The result is at least twice as good as before and outperforms the internal output in every single discipline finally :)

    Thank you so much Luca! The footage is much appreciated. I am hoping that Blackmagic will soon release an updated version of the 12G HDR external recorders, with a more 'modern' look (slightly slimmer, with smaller bezels), USB C port shifted to the side, and ideally a CFExpress Type B slot. I love the idea of working with BRAW, but the recorders seem a bit cumbersome at present.

    Thank you for the video and the sample footage! I downloaded and tried to grade them. I agree, they look artificially "sharpened" for some reason(and I think that's what you referred to as digital looking). There are quite a bit of moire and aliasing happening. Nice video! I would like to hear you zalk about the delay as this is the biggest problem with these cameras.
    Also, I'm wondering about the digital look of the braw. With my testing, picture wise, there isntwo big reasons why using braw. 1. Denoising in camera is brutal. Dark colors get destroyed by it. 2. Look at the hue channel or key a color (sp hue+sat, not a luminance value) and conpare. In camera has huge squares. Braw has so much more detail. Important when colorgrading or greenkey shoots. Somehow not a single youtube review mentions this. This is the difference between 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 (in 6k) and 4:4:4 of braw

    The S5IIx and Video Assist combo is interesting, but the latency coming out of the camera is just awful, plus the fact that the Video Assist uses external SSDs for recording which adds more bulk to the rig-at least with the Ninja V there’s a tightly integrated SSD. I would rather film direct to SSD on the S5IIx, adjust the exposure and white balance more carefully, and grade the V-log. To film BRAW I already have Blackmagic cameras in my kit.

    • @LucaBono.Studio

      @@alazaruz Except when you’re on a gimbal and don’t want all that extra weight up high. I prefer to clamp a Sabrent Rocket Nano SSD to the side of my cage. Takes up much less space when I don’t want a handle. And when I do want a handle, it’s easy enough to add one. I think my solution costs a fair bit less as well. Just the same, I agree that Kondor Blue makes some good kit, and the integrated handle is kinda slick, but for my use it seems like a constraint to have my storage dependent on the handle.

    The most annoying part of the video assist is that it's marketed as being HDR, it's right on the front of the freaking display, yet when recording in BRAW you can't get any HDR preview. That part to me is absolutely wild. Yet some blackmagic cameras have HDR up to PQ 1000 nits on the in camera display LUT options, and the cheaper Atomos devices all allow for HDR real time viewing. The marketing vs real world workflow on that is just absolutely unforgivable.

    • @DrWNoLs
      @DrWNoLs ปีที่แล้ว

      Whats funny too is it works amazingly well with HLG on the panasonics. There you can get an HDR preview perfectly, even better than any alternative. Its just too bad they dont do a better job with raw to HDR viewing.

    Are you saying the with the latest firmware and NR set to low the S1 has visible ghosting with the internal codec? I know both the S1 and S1H had horrendous looking noise reduction originally but I thought it was taken care of after later firmware.

      I see that ghosting on the S1 amd S5...many people don't see it. At the end of the day, unless you're filming commercials or films, the internal codec is good enough.

    So you physically need the BlackMagic Video Assist 12g to actually record BRAW on this camera?
