    Studio is not really a good environment to see the difference between the internal codec and BRAW. If you shoot an outdoor scene with a lot of details, the difference is huge. The internal codec is sometimes 'making up colors.' On trees with green leaves and brown bark, everything is just green. With BRAW, everything is as it's supposed to be and much sharper.

    • @OBP_

      Noted, going to be running much more testing so will keep this in mind, thanks.

    • @Wildridefilms

      There is no difference in actual sharpness in terms of detail. BRAW usually adds a little bit of sharpening. And in terms of general image quality, the difference is minimal if at all. However if you're doing massive shifts in colour balance and exposure, you'll see a notable difference.

    • @alihammad6318
      @alihammad6318 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Late reply but this isn't true, BRAW is 4:4:4 so no color subsampling, it also completely skips the noise reduction which is usually heavy in chroma channels, destroying fine color detail. BRAW this time on the S5ii/X isn't sharpened. It's a night and day difference compared to the internal codecs, including ProRes 5.8K, simply because the camera is currently heavy with the processing, let's see if we can get them to dial it back.
      @@Wildridefilms

    • @Wildridefilms
      @Wildridefilms 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@alihammad6318 colour subsampling doesn't lead to loss of visible detail but reduces colour fidelity and might cause banding or false colour when a heavy grade is applied. And the internal NR can be turned all the way down to a point where it's pretty much non existent as you have control over it.

    • @alihammad6318
      @alihammad6318 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Wildridefilms visible detail is a spectrum, loss of color resolution can smooth over bumps and texture like on skin and hair and other finely detailed items. But with a good enough 4:2:2 codec it's not an issue. Issue is, the processing before it gets to the codec.
      Internal NR wise it can absolutely be turned down, but at the moment it's pretty heavy handed on the S5iix and leads to legitimate loss of fine detail. I'm working on a detailed comparison to show Panasonic and hopefully get them to fix it.
      I'm looking "under the hood" with Neat Video and there's noticeable chroma blurring/smearing even in the best 5.8K prores codec. But even the highest compression BRAW 12:1 which has file sizes slightly bigger than internal all-intra retains more color information as it's unprocessed.

    I can’t wait for my Full Frame 6k to come through. I have been using an S5IIx to get a feel for open gate filming. I’ve learned a lot but prefer to have the option of internal BRAW, especially for gimbal work. The Video Assist is a bulky pain to rig up with the Lumix-especially since I only happen to have the 7” version. Beyond that I’m glad you spent some time pointing out how much easier it is to correct problems using BRAW. In the real world, mistakes happen, light changes, settings get overlooked while under pressure, and BRAW makes it much easier (and faster, time is money!) to adjust problem footage and get all the clips matched up. Users need to hear this more often instead of the outdated line I hear a lot, “well _____ shot in 8-bit and did just fine.” Maybe so, but they probably struggled for hours to fix color and exposure problems, that with BRAW, can be corrected in moments.

    • @OBP_
      @OBP_  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Could not agree more, people always have this impression that you only need raw for "big budget" productions, when its the smaller, faster paced stuff, where mistakes will get made. where raw really saves the day.

    Great video, I'd love to see the s5iix with its proresHQ output to ssd, compared to the BRAW. Is it really worth messing around with raw and LUTS if proresHQ is so good? Is the time and effort and cost of the video assist 12G really worth it when proresHQ offers so much quality out of the box. (Just get the white balance and focus right in camera)

    Unreal content. Such an underrated camera and it's why I'm switching from the BMPCC 6K. Any advice on setups? Looking to use the kondor blue top handle ssd holder with a falcam cage to have the flexibility in the quick release system. How do you record externally? and would a rotation of three Panasonic batteries work for a day shoot or go V-mount?

    • @OBP_
      @OBP_  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      compared to a Pocket 6K, you'll be using a lot less power, that's one of the great things if you want to rig up and last days use a v mount. if not any old 3/4 batteries of Amazon will get you through a day keeping things light and small. I got myself the 7" BM video assist for external rec as it has 2 SD card slots and gives you 2 XLRs (I used in this video for the mic BTW) but if you don't need them I'd definitely get the 5" model as it is smaller and seems more balanced size wise. not used one but I like the look of the Kondor blue top handle, will probably get one in sometime soon.

      @@OBP_thanks, can't wait to see how that turns out. Looking at the SmallRig non black mamba as it has two cold shoes on top but will wait for your review. Any chance of knowing what sd card and settings you recorded BRAW? Just wondering how far can you push the BMVA? Could you get 256gb/512gb 4k60fps at 8:1 compression on yours? Just know blackmagic are notorious for certain cards to not work or be recommended.

      for me, moving over in terms of editing was pretty easy as resolve is just as good if not better than anything from Adobe. I pay for Lightroom & Photoshop subscription from Adobe as it's the cheapest option and I really love Photoshop. After-effect is a tricky one, I have never really gotten my head around fusion, I'm getting better and friends keep telling me that if you really take the time to learn it, it's a very powerful tool but its a massive learning curve from after effect.

    I think we have to use IR cut filters with all of the pocket models. It’s hard to judge any comparison with using one.
    Great video, the Black Magic cameras both look more natural but if they weren’t side by side the Panasonic S Series cams are very good, you just have to work harder to get the look you want.
    At least for me with my S1 and Pocket 4k. At 8:17 the User and Pocket 6k just have more of a green cast.

    I have a pair of questions about stabilization
    Is the IBIS good enough to use manual vintage lenses handheld when walking?
    Can the S5IIX store gyro data to stabilize in gyroflow in post?

    • @OBP_
      @OBP_  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Stabilization doesn't get any better than S5ii, with all 3 options turned up to max it truly is crazy what results you can get. Although it feels a little robotic sometimes. I like to have 1 or 2 of the settings on and the result can be amazing. And for the post-gyro data, I am not aware that this is possible.

    Hey man. Appreciate your test. Did a video regarding BRaw on the GH6 myself on my channel.
    But just a quick tip. You might want to redo the test regarding white balancing. As I’ve also explained on my channel, white balancing using the temperature/tint is probably the least effective way for someone to correct a white balance error because it actually balance the image but instead adds more colors on the opposite end, when in reality you want to take away colors and add others.
    I personally found using the offset color wheel with “printer lights” checked on from the color tab at the top, to be the most effective way for white balancing correcting and I have gotten much closer to what the BRaw and other Raw footage’s actually would give.
    Hope that helps

    For those not familiar, the BRAW comparison in test 6 at about 7:28 might have more IR pollution in the Pocket and URSA. I am pretty sure the pocket and URSA don't have strong IR filters built in. I am guessing the S5ii has one built in.

    Looking at the Video Assist product page and the list of BRAW supported cameras I'm surprised at how few there are, only 1 Canon and no Sony. I'm sure there's reasons for this but I wonder if it means the supported cameras have the various BRAW codecs built in or if the footage gets encoded to BRAW on the Video Assist. I mean, is it only a business arrangement that means you need to buy a Video Assist in order to record BRAW? If the camera has the codecs built in, you should be able to record it to an external SSD, right? I'm not a pro videographer like you, by the way, just curious about the tech.

    • @OBP_
      @OBP_  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yeah right, I have also been down this line of thought. think the whole compressed RAW files is patented by RED the camera manufacture. so I believe, Blackmagic with Braw, Apple with Pro Res Raw, all have to pay RED to use the concept. This is why Lumix charge for the upgrade or charge more for the S5iix with it already installed. this mite have changed but its how it used to be. I also herd Blackmagic CEO grant say in an interview that wants Braw is every camera and would offer it to anyone wanting it. so maybe its just a money / brand politics issues

    • @rpmcitycruiser
      @rpmcitycruiser 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I can't remember where I read it, but I seem to remember that the camera manufacturer has to provide the details of the RAW output of their particular camera(s) to Blackmagic. Blackmagic will then program their Video Assists to encode that RAW format into BRAW. I'm not sure what other business arrangements might be required.

      whenever I shoot with the Lumix in camera test (internal and BRAW it seems) when converted to 709 in resolve it always has a little less contrast. This is something I have noticed over time, it's a super easy fix, but I don't like to go messing with anything as it can make the test unfair that way, i just leave stuff as is out of camera.
