Hi. I think one of the problems is that previous generations learned from older relatives but now many people, like myself, are having to start from scratch. I was frankly on the verge of giving up, whereas if my Grandfather had still been here he would have taught me everything I needed to know. Lost knowledge sadly. Thank you for posting.
I quit smoking everything tobacco including dipping snuff and Chewing tobacco (I really liked Redman Chew) close to 30 years ago. I smoked cigarettes, Cigars and a Pipe. I smoked a pipe a lot and learned from my Dad a lot about pipe smoking. The over the counter pipe tobaccos like half and half or Cherry tobacco or were not generally good. The tobaccos that smell good in a room (and to others) is probably loaded with Vitrginia bright. Virginia has a bite. Borkhum Riff was a cavendish OTC blend that was mild as I remember. And I couldn’t tell you if these brands still exist. But the most pleasing to me was a heavy English Latakia blend and while the smoke wasn’t that pleasing to others in a room it was pleasing to me. Why I don’t know. The Latakia mixed with Virginia produced a heavy pleasing smoke. From all the smoking I did I never noticed any health problems except a tendency to get ulcers in my gums but I quit when I was in my 40’s. I’m in my 70’s now and have been thinking about starting the pipe again which I nostalgically miss. My biggest fear is that it would lead to cigarette smoking again which I’m more averse to because of the exorbitant cost. I wish to tell you and as you can see in the general population obesity is more of a problem than tobacco smoking ever will be. The prevalence of heavy mostly cigarette smoking in the past did cause a lot of early death. But obesity causing so many metabolic disorders these days that it’s the real health problem and gives the former smoking a run for the money at least in quality of life issues. So enjoy a good blend in your pipe and smoke moderately. Among my age group type two diabetes is endemic, a boon to pharma with drugs like metformin and Lipitor. Giving up sugar and carbs alone will make you more healthy than worrying about any health issues caused by moderate pipe smoking.
I've been learning everything from videos here on TH-cam. My grandfather was a pipe smoker but sadly he died when I was very little so I was never able to get interested in pipe smoking and learn from him. Remembering and loving the smell of his tobacco and watching him smoke his pipes as a kid is what got me into pipe smoking. We are still going through my grand parents things to try and find my grandfather's pipe so I can have them. One of my first pipes I bought was one that was a close to the same pipe as what my grandfather had
Great to see another reformed brother enjoying pipe tobacco! I struggled with it for a little bit, regarding it as sin, but I am changing my views now. We can enjoy what God gave us, in a proper and God honoring manor, of course!
My first english was nightcap. And it absolutely was love at first taste. I think the fact that im more of a cigar smoker helped with that love as a full flavor full body lover. But right now i am enjoying Dan Tobacco Old Ironsides and absolutely loving it. So different than night cap for sure.
When I worked in two different smoke shops back in the day, we were always tinkering with the blends we recommended to noobs. Most often burley based, the trick was to get enough flavor in to keep it from being bland and boring but keep the heat down as well. Surprisingly, the most successful blends had a small percentage of Latakia.
I started on Smokers Value Black Cavendish and Borkum Riff Cherry Liqueur which made me a pipe smoker since I was either twenty one or twenty two which then was fourteen years ago and since then have had a lof of pipes including Clay Pipes from Germany and a few corn cob pipes and now I have an Italian Granada Briar Pipe and I like all pipe tobacco.
Bought my first pipe and pipe tobacco 2 nights ago. Watched a few videos and settled down last night in the backyard, with a pipe packed with Consummate Gentleman, the tobacco i chose solely on name alone lol. Let me tell you, having never smoked a proper tobacco pipe in my life, i was in heaven. It reminded me of the old wood burning stove from my late aunts house in upstate NY. Nostalgic, relaxing, i cant believe i waited this long to enjoy this hobby. Will keep watching you videos brother. Cheers.
When I started pipe smoking. A good friend recommended Sutliff Private Stock Great Outdoors is a comforting, old-fashioned blend of Burley and black Cavendish Still love it
Yup, best to not overwhelm a beginner....wait till they get into pipe material, bowl shape...etc..I have hated some blends...then tried it in a different pipe...say a corn cob...BOOM...awesome blend! Could also have to do with "cellaring...aging"...lol
Awesome! Thanks! I just ordered my first pipe (Emerald Corn Cob from Missouri Meerschaum) and have been researching tobacco for weeks. Happy Resurrection Day! 😊
That’s exactly what I’ve been doing! lol Can’t watch enough of them! I started with a MM Legend just to days ago. I smoked Captain Black because that’s what my dad smoked when I was young and I liked the smell of it, and some guys recommended it as a good starter tobacco. My second smoke was a local B&M blend, and was not as good, but I think it’s because I don’t realize you supposed to change out those paper filters in the stem. I think it might have been still wet from the previous smoke. Much to learn…
I started with "OTC" Tobaccos like Capt Black, Borkum Riff, Half and Half...a local smoke shop happened to sell pipe tobacco by the ounce...then I found online, and a better local brick and mortar. I now prefer English and Balkan blends...getting into plug, cakes...flakes... It is a wonderful hobby, don't forget that the pipe in which you smoke a certain tobacco makes a HUGE difference. I find some more enjoyable in a corn cob, others in briar...then the style of pipe! wow, there is so much to learn...but don't be intimidated. Pipe smoking is for the patient person.
Another good option is the Amphora sampler that you can get off Smokingpipes for a reasonable price. English, VA, Burley, Kentucky and an Aromatic offering. Wish they would offer a VaPer to round it off. Still a good option for folks just starting out to see what they might like (and not like).
I'm fairly new and I wanna say that I've thoroughly enjoyed windjammer and I recently had 2 bowls of Old Toby and offer that up to any beginner as well. But Im probably an outlier in that I haven't had a blend I didn't like except straight burley.
Oh wow. I have just decided to wanderinto the pipe smoking world, and this video was released 2 days ago. Thank you for the current opinion piece made especially for me. :D
Great video👍🏻 I mix 10oz of 1Q and 6 oz of RLP 6 my go to mix. The English blend I love but is very hard to get is Penzance by esoterica crumble cake easy to load smokes cool and Very satisfying..😊
Have been smoking a pipe for over 30 years. Started with a cheap briar and Captain Black original. I personally think new smokers should start with a conger blend until they learn the basics, lighting, smoking, and cleaning thier pipes. After this they can begin to explore the wide variety of choices we have today. Just my personal opinion. Have only been trying all different blends for the last few years. Have found out dark fired is not one of my favorites. DO so enjoy Early Morning Pipe and Night Cap...think they both pair well with my coffee. Have been enjoying many bulk blends from Cornnell&Diehl, Lane, and Sutliff tobaccos. Think your videos are great. THANK YOU!!!
@TheSpurgeonPiper Hi Wilson, I have just started watching your videos, and I find them one of the best tutorials I've come across. They are detailed and relaxing to follow. I was just wondering if you could do a Live where people can real-life comment and ask questions as I am still having a lot of issues with keeping it lit, ash tasting, and several other things. I saw you have done videos on these things, and I have watched them, but if you do have time, a Live could help me and possibly others too by any questions they need answering. I live in Gmt+8 (Australia time) I would normally just keep trying my best without bothering you but a 50g bag of tobacco here can cost from 60 to 100 dollars and burning through that while starting is 😅. If you do decide to do one, that would be great, and I would love to look forward to it. Cheers
Hi Wilson 👋, thanks for the content 🙏 good advice , I'm smoking only 3 blends that I enjoy , rum & honey , artic cool and house blend called unique and heaven Greetings and God bless 🙌 from south africa 🇿🇦
Good recommendations Wilson. I think the advice of smoking through the blend is key. Really getting to know the blend is important. There have been many blends that I have come to love after smoking through the tin.
Hey Wilson, I'm so glad I discovered your channel, so informative without any over the top crazy antics that some youtubers feel the need to add....all totally unnecessary and really annoying. Plus the fact you're a very beautiful looking guy which never hurts 😅. Thankyou once again, I wish you & your channel continued success & growth, lots of love & best wishes from the UK, take care buddy ❤xx
As someone who has only been smoking a pipe for about a year on and off, I’ve really been trying to take it from just a “hobby” to actually considering myself a “daily pipe smoker” and I have a few of these blends in my mason jars. Especially Lane 1Q. Good recommendations and happy piping everyone!
Very good recommendations! My general thoughts on aromatics: I also don't like the goopy blends. I've found a good way to counteract that is to look for aromatics with more than one type of leaf (ie not just Cavendish). In my opinion the other leaves tend to fill out (and dry!) the blend. In addition to the country squires blends, I really like Russ' Blends (from pipes and cigars). One I recommend is Bing Cherry: a Cavendish and Virginia aromatic
I'll chuck one in I really enjoy, actually 2. Sutliff Z92 Vanilla Custard is really good. Not goopy but will burn hot if you keep nailin' it. The other one that I absolutely love, J.M. Boswell's Cupcake. Oh my, it is super good. On the pricier side of bulk but it is good. Both aromatics.
As a new smoker of pipes but not cigars, I like flake as it last as the blend I'm smoking is Seattle Pipe Club's in Plum Pudding Bourbon Barrel Aged. Delicious!
Great stuff, as always! Love this pretty comprehensive list done by category. Was recently talking to friend who is just getting started with a pipe and tried to put a similar list together for him - going to add some of these to that list for him! Many thanks!
Very good. Chelsea morning sounds up my alley. I'm more into latakia forward and balkan blends. I have yet to find a virginia or a burley blend that has me returning with the exception of MM Country Gentleman
Recently tried Old Toby (now called Tombigbee - copyright issues with the Tolkien Estate unfortunately). I love this blend and am a newbie. Thanks for all your beginner input, Wilson. Love your channel.
Some great choices there Wilson. I especially like HH Burley Flake and Stokkebye LNF. A couple I have referred to new pipesters would be Cary Grant's blend from Kramer's, Tashkent from Peretti and Stokkebye English Oriental Supreme. As far as an introduction to English/Oriental blends, these are favorites of mine. Aromatics I would say Rattray's Bagpiper's Dream and MacBaren's Vanilla Roll Cake. Great job as usual Wilson, be well.
Oh I forgot I just tried MacBaren Black Ambrosia very good, it was dry out of the tin has a old time aero smell to me and not gurgling or bite very low on nic
Have always enjoyed your reviews. Thought I was subbed to you but as often happens with TH-cam I found I wasn't still so have resubbed you. Looking forward to seeing much more.
My list for broad exposure to different types of pipe tobacco has a couple of similar suggestions to this video. If I may share... - GL Pease Chelsea Morning: Latakia with orientals - GL Pease Odyssey: latakia bomb - Sillem Black: latakia aromatic - John Middleton Carter Hall: inexpensive OTC, but a tasty light burley baccy nevertheless - John Patton Storm Front: Burley with some cigar leaf - MacBaren Old Dark Fired: Strong, but delicious dark fired burley - Esoterica Stonehaven: Hard to find virgina/burley - Rattray Marlin Flake: Virginia/perique with cavendish. This is my regular smoke. - 1Q: another cheap but tasty blend, this is among the better large production aromatics - Gawith and Hoggarth Rum Flake: My favorite option for exposure to Lakeland tobacco
Wow, you really know you've found a very specific niche when you're looking to get into pipe smoking and the first video is by a Reformed channel haha. Even if the name wasn't referencing C.H. Spurgeon, Berkhof's Systematics would have immediately caught my attention. May God be with you, brother
Excellent recommendations. I am not familiar with the burlies. After not liking Haunted Bookshop as a very new pipe smoker, I never tried Burlies. I am just now re-introducing my palet to burlies, and will try your recommendations. This is Owen who you met at the CSR 500, if you remember.
I completely missed that poll! Can I still contribute? I am struggling with keeping it lit and the pipes getting hot. I have two briar long stem pipes from Vauen and smoke Borkim Riff Sungold/regular, Skandinavik Sungold/mix & Holland House, none of which you mentioned :D they are mostly aromatic so I'll see if I can dry those out longer and take another sip. Thank you again for a brilliant video! I'd love to one day visit US and meet up with people who smoke pipe and talk about it because I don't know anybody here with that knowledge and lifestyle.
Great video, thanks Wilson! Man I love Chelsea Morning. Smoked it for the first time last night, wow! I’m relatively new to Pipe Smoking and have been looking for a good blend I enjoy to break in my pipes. I’m using Carter Hall currently, but really like Chelsea Morning. Would you recommend it as a good blend for breaking in a pipe?
I’m a cigar smoker just getting into pipes. In my cigars I prefer a medium to full flavor. AJ Fernandez New Worlds and Epicure’s Perdomo Reserve Maduro 10th Anniversary are two of my favorites. Most of the pipe tobaccos I have tried have been way too light for me to enjoy, do you have any that you could or would recommend for me?
I'm a new pipe smoker and I am ordering the Missouri meerschaum sampler pack ya get 4 pipes and 4 blends to try with them I figure it's a great way to try new blend types and add 4 pipes to the rotation....as a beginner it makes a lot of sense to me and it's only 60 bucks
So after looking into the Middle Earth series by Country Squire, it seems that they had to change the names of the blends due to copyright issues. I am looking at buying my first pipe tobacco and as a Middle Earth nerd, the Green Dragon was going to be my first. Do you know what they changed the name to?
I've been at this since mid January, so two months, and I've learned I do not enjoy aromatic blends. They smell great in the tin, but leave me very disappointed while smoking it. Some, so-called, mild aromatics aren't so bad. Missouri Meerschaum's Great Dane being one of 7 aromatics (out of 27 I own) I have tried. I do have twenty more aromatics, I've ordered in the past two months, that I need to get through. I will do so sparingly of course, and it will take a good amount of time to rid myself of all 27 aromatics I own. So to beginners, I would suggest not "stocking up" on any blend until reaching a personal knowledge of what you truly enjoy and know you will smoke on a daily...and what you might enjoy from time to time. Stick with buying small amounts of Bulk or the smallest of tins. Heck, you may enjoy nothing but aromatics. BTW, and FYI, I do not see Green Dragon nor Old Toby on The Country Squire site.
I found I have gotten to many tobaccos to quickly. Do I need to worry about the aromatic blends losing their flavor before I finish them even if they are in mason jars?
I still have tongue bite but it is my cadence, blend and how clean the pipe is. There are aromatics that are great Sutliff creme brulee, RLP 6, and Black cordial. For this I have to air out for a long time and let dry. Also after cleaning my pipe I will set it in a sunny window or outside to help remove any excess moisture it might of picked up while smoking Hey I have a question does anyone know some blends that are similar to GL Pease bankside and MacBaren plum cake? Where Latakia is condiment
Question for everyone would a jar for my tobacco be much easier to contain my tobacco than the pouch itself and then the pain in the rear part is when I get a tin can tobacco is the tobacco gets dry and then it becomes not good.
What's your take on the chemicals that might be in some tobaccos? I find that some companies tent to make cheap tobaccos that end up being really popular since they are not expensive. Just like food, one needs to do their research prior to buying tobacco blends.
Pipe tobacco involves very little additives and if there are any, they are food grade (liquor, cherry extract, chocolate, vanilla). Some aromatic tobacco makers will add a component to keep the blend moist (glycol) but that's the extent of it.
Wilson, fantastic channel. I'm getting into the hobby and found so many of your videos to be extremely helpful. Question: with old toby being a more mild aromatic, should I still be concerned with it ghosting a pipe if I only have one right now?
A friend offered me a bowlfull of his mildest pipe tobacco some years ago, and I enjoyed it. But, I could still taste stale smoke the next morning, so I walked away from pipe smoking. I still think about it, 'though and I might try cautiously again. Any thoughts? Broad question, I know. Thanks!
Dumbest question ever: in my town there are many small-chain tobacco stores. If they have any pipe products at all its in larger factory looking bags. I'd like to know: would that product be more highly processed with bad additives in it? Likened to cigarettes vs cigars, I'd like to try more natural "organic" pipe tobacco.
Not a dumb question at all. Those blends wouldn't have any additives likened to cigarettes but most blends that you described are aromatic blends that have food safe preservatives that keep them moist. But again, they wouldn't have anything extra that would be greatly concerning.
As a beginner pipe smoker, about 4 months with 4 or 5 blends, when will a person be able to taste all these beautiful taste that is described? I get a very slight taste of anything other than ……..tobacco. Any suggestions?

Old Toby is now called “Tom Bigbee” or something like that. Maybe they got in trouble using trademarked names (?)
They did. I think the Tolkien Estate cracked down on the Middle Earth references.
Hello Sir , thank you , only the first could find in EU

Early morning pipe and night cap both by peterson's is what I have been using during the winter.
I smoke the same blends at winter, both are fantastic. In summer I prefer something like pure Virginias or Virginia perique blends. Cheers from Spain
New to pipe smoking. I notice that tobaccos smell different but seemingly taste the same…
When I started pipe smoking. A good friend recommended Sutliff Private Stock Great Outdoors is a comforting, old-fashioned blend of Burley and black Cavendish Still love it

Oh I forgot I just tried MacBaren Black Ambrosia very good, it was dry out of the tin has a old time aero smell to me and not gurgling or bite very low on nic
Other aromatics that are yummy, not goopy, are Carter Hall and Captain Black original. Thanks for an excellent review.
I really like Lane Limited 1Q and Lane BCA
Have always enjoyed your reviews. Thought I was subbed to you but as often happens with TH-cam I found I wasn't still so have resubbed you. Looking forward to seeing much more.
Thank you!
My list for broad exposure to different types of pipe tobacco has a couple of similar suggestions to this video. If I may share...
- GL Pease Chelsea Morning: Latakia with orientals
- GL Pease Odyssey: latakia bomb
- Sillem Black: latakia aromatic
- John Middleton Carter Hall: inexpensive OTC, but a tasty light burley baccy nevertheless
- John Patton Storm Front: Burley with some cigar leaf
- MacBaren Old Dark Fired: Strong, but delicious dark fired burley
- Esoterica Stonehaven: Hard to find virgina/burley
- Rattray Marlin Flake: Virginia/perique with cavendish. This is my regular smoke.
- 1Q: another cheap but tasty blend, this is among the better large production aromatics
- Gawith and Hoggarth Rum Flake: My favorite option for exposure to Lakeland tobacco
An alternative to 1-Q is RLP-6. It's similar to 1-Q but different and I prefer it.
Both are Lane Limited
Wow, you really know you've found a very specific niche when you're looking to get into pipe smoking and the first video is by a Reformed channel haha. Even if the name wasn't referencing C.H. Spurgeon, Berkhof's Systematics would have immediately caught my attention. May God be with you, brother
Thank you brother!
Give HH burley flake a shot. Less harsh than HB and very easy to work with. Awesome with coffee as well.
I will admit that a lot of what I've bought, is because the name peaked my interest.
Many of us are drawn to try new blends from the intriguing names or eye catching tin art :)
Loving this guy
Great video, thanks Wilson! Man I love Chelsea Morning. Smoked it for the first time last night, wow! I’m relatively new to Pipe Smoking and have been looking for a good blend I enjoy to break in my pipes. I’m using Carter Hall currently, but really like Chelsea Morning. Would you recommend it as a good blend for breaking in a pipe?
FYI Edisto is pronounced ED-isto in the SC lowcountry.
Wilson… where is a good place to look for Wessex burley? I got one tin and I can’t bear to have it be gone without finding more…. BEST BURLEY EVER.
Good informative video, Thanks
I'm a new pipe smoker and I am ordering the Missouri meerschaum sampler pack ya get 4 pipes and 4 blends to try with them I figure it's a great way to try new blend types and add 4 pipes to the rotation....as a beginner it makes a lot of sense to me and it's only 60 bucks
Good idea
Great channel.
I found I have gotten to many tobaccos to quickly. Do I need to worry about the aromatic blends losing their flavor before I finish them even if they are in mason jars?
How did you. It mention any of the amphora blends ???
Did the Country Squire discontinue their Middle Earth line? I was quite hyped about that one…
They are renaming them due to copyright infringement issues
Great advice!
This will be interesting!
Thank you !
I hear navy flake is cased in rum.
I still have tongue bite but it is my cadence, blend and how clean the pipe is. There are aromatics that are great Sutliff creme brulee, RLP 6, and Black cordial. For this I have to air out for a long time and let dry. Also after cleaning my pipe I will set it in a sunny window or outside to help remove any excess moisture it might of picked up while smoking
Hey I have a question does anyone know some blends that are similar to GL Pease bankside and MacBaren plum cake?
Thanks Jack.
Yes, it will ghost your pipe. If you don't want to that to happen, I'd recommend at least getting some corncobs for aros.
@@TheSpurgeonPiper thank you! I'll work on acquiring another pipe.
That one store you mentioned changed the names of all their tobacco. 😢
Where does one acquire these blends? I’m struggling to find a place to buy them.
Is Mac Barren Virginia No.1 a good blend to start out with?
I have smoke pipes about 15 years. What’s the differens on latakia and oriental ? Latakia is a oriental right ?
Are there any sampler assortment's you might recommend?
What best way to store your pipe tobacco
Pipes for newbies. Should I invest in a high end pipe or will I ok with a cob and trying different tobaccos?
I have videos on this. In short, go for the cob or a cheap briar pipe.
Does country squire deliver to the Netherlans?
Isn't vaping more flavorful, though?
Thanks
looking for old mule tobacco
A friend offered me a bowlfull of his mildest pipe tobacco some years ago, and I enjoyed it. But, I could still taste stale smoke the next morning, so I walked away from pipe smoking. I still think about it, 'though and I might try cautiously again. Any thoughts? Broad question, I know. Thanks!
You know not to inhale it, right?
@bencarter7839 my bud was sitting in the same room, coaching me. Yes. I know not to inhale.
@user-mb1hg4qu9f OK, just checking, because it's pretty unusual for a super mild blend to have this effect.
@bencarter7839 well, it was my first pipe full ever, so...
But again, they wouldn't have anything extra that would be greatly concerning.
ive got some St Bruno ready rubbed - now for drying out, would i leave the pouch open for a bit or not
Sure, or simply pull out a certain amount and let it airdry
thank you - ive just purchased an air tight jar as well @@TheSpurgeonPiper
thankyou sir
What’s your take on Seattle pipe club Mississippi River rum barel aged
Haven't had it
As a beginner pipe smoker, about 4 months with 4 or 5 blends, when will a person be able to taste all these beautiful taste that is described? I get a very slight taste of anything other than ……..tobacco.
Any suggestions?
It depends on how often you smoke but you'll see them appear slowly.
@@TheSpurgeonPiper thank you for the quick reply
