Quick clarification, for Sleepy Hollow, it's sold in 5 oz. bags, at least it was when I got off the phone with them 10 minutes ago after finishing this video. :D
I would love to see a cowboy coffee review. Great suggestions for beginners. All 3 are very good. Tip for newbs: Break in those blends with a dedicated pipe and you'll notice the blend change and really shine.
Thanks again for a solid video, Wilson! If I can add one thing regarding Straus Sleepy Hallow - it’s a very moist blend. So if you’re a beginner (like me) and don’t want to suffer tongue bite, you might want to spread it out on a paper towel or something similar and let it dry out for a while (30-60 min) before packing your pipe.
Early morning Piper and cowboy coffee are two of my favorites I have at least a pound of cowboy coffee at home it stores and ages very well keep up the good work
EMP was my first "serious" pipe blend, and it hit so good. So tangy and smokey. That said, I never found it to be mellow. It seems to get pretty harsh after a while. I've heard other reviewers say the same.
EMP was my first English blend as well. Very enjoyable. I actually put some into a mason jar and forgot about it for almost a year. SUPER smooth and a pleasure to smoke.
I have some Early Morning Pipe coming and am excited to try it! I am new to pipe smoking, 4 bowls over the past few days. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and passion!
If they miss out on the Sleepy Hollow, it’s hard to beat 1-Q as an affordable, readily available first aromatic. Lights and burns easily and I’ve never had it bite.
Outstanding list for the beginner. I love that you advise beginners not to use aromatics as the starting point or more expensive complex blends. Good straight forward tobaccos. A great introduction and while I have not had the first 2, I am going to try them in my rotation.
@@TheSpurgeonPiper I also ordered the Cornishman along with the Cowboy Coffee. WOW, the Cowboy Coffee is good, but the Cornishman is outstanding. The was my first order from The Country Squire and I will be revisiting them regularly.
@@EJGentlemanI'm coming from a once in awhile backwoods bourbon cigar with an old fashioned and a steak. I wanted to try pipe because my grandfather smoked pipes and it brings back memories. Anyway, I tried a couple tobaccos: one was bourbon borkum riff and the other was spc plum pudding: Christmas spirit(special reserve plug cut apple brandy barrel aged). The borkum riff was not good 😢. The Christmas spirit wasn't bad but it left a bit to be desired and just was VERY different than what I'm used to. I'll continue to come back to the Christmas spirit because I did like it and there is so much there to unravel(only smoked a full bowl of it twice 😅). I'm going to try a bit of these ones that he recommended and some of the others that I've heard of that people recommend for new pipe smokers. I'm also going to mess around with making my own pipe and flavoring the mouthpiece somehow because that's something the cigars that I like have. Maybe even dipping it in some honey whiskey or soaking it or something ha ha. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated! 🙂
@@hisnameisiam808 The Country Squire has some excellent blends in 1 OZ packages. A great way to try Cowboy Coffee or Black and Tan. Smoking Pipes has Pertson's Sherlock Holmes, Davidoff Red, Ashton's Artisans Blend or Winding Road.
It was great meeting you at the Texas pipe show, Wilson. Thank you so much for the scarecrow. I am enjoying it quite a bit, very interesting blend! Hope to see you next year
It was nice to see you at the pipe show last Saturday. I actually bought some Cowboy Coffee from John David there. I usually only stick to heavy burleys or Kentucky blends so I was glad that this came close enough for me to enjoy a Country Squire blend.
Great review as always. The country squire is my go-to shop (online) and I often mention their blends on my channel. I just reviewed Cobblestone Black Coffee blend recently and will have to pick up Cowboy Coffee for a comparison review. Be well, Z~

I haven't tried either of the first two blends. Cowboy Coffee seems interesting, might give that a try. I would add Sutliff Voodoo Queen to the list of easy-going English blends. It's available in bulk at reasonable cost.
As a new smoker, I can not beleive the differnce between captain black bends & Early morning pipe blend. It could the combo of the pipe upgrade from cheap to Savenelli, but its the s probably early morning blend more thn anything. smokes cool, no afterslime & bite on the toung.
Go to your local tobacconist. Find an aromatic blend that smells good to you. Grab a few and try them out. Don't go for other people's suggestions. Pipe smoking is a personal experience. It's all up to you👍
Thank you . I am a fairly new pipe aficionado. I enjoy the peaceful time I spend with my pipe.. it allows me to inflect, and contemplate. Sadly, I am in an area where pipe tobacco is almost impossible to obtain without some difficulty... Dublin Ireland. I will be travelling to Germany for the Christmas season, so hopefully I can find some of your suggestions there.... is there a tobacco available in Germany that you might know of that you could recommend? I am partial to aromatics, but am open to try all others. Thanks again. GBY
Germany has some great tobacco shops. Make sure you research before going. Where are you going? HU, MacBaren, Kohlhase there are loads there. However a bit closer to you is a tobacconist is Belfast called Miss Morans. They are very good. They stock many brands including Gawith Hoggarth and Germains. I personally recommend those brands. If you know anyone up north they could order for you from the UK sites.
Thank you. I have heard of Miss Morans, however the prices there are quite steep, and with the travel from Dublin, it would make more sense to purchase tobacco from Germany.. at a quarter of the price.. Our trip to Berlin should be rewarding. Thanks again. GBY 🙏
Hey there! Quick newbie pipe question. How do you fix a pipe that has a loose stem? I realize I’m smoking my pipe too hot and I think that made it loose. What should I do?
If I gotta pay to watch informative information, then I'll pass. Love you brother. I do understand your point of view and making money, but as a pastor, c'mon!
Bro out here recommending a blend that beginners have to buy a 5oz bag of that will cost them a minimum $35 to buy and have shipped, then rolls right into a country squire blend that for 2oz shipped to your door is going to cost them a minimum of $20 .... for $55+ you could have recommended they try a bunch of bulk blends from Lane, Sutliff, C&D and whatever else... but instead you like "nahh dawg, go straight for the Tobacconist blends where you have to pay $10 to ship 2oz... but hey it's really affordable".... I think you spend a little too much time in the so called "good book" and not enough in the common sense book...... I pity the beginner who took your advice and spent over 50 bucks on two blends and probably didn't end up even liking them... what a way to get people interested Wilson, hit them right in the wallet right off the bat...
It’s funny, that if you look in the past, there are plenty of videos where Wilson recommends those particular blends you mentioned…….I’m sure that he’s focused on flavor/aroma for a beginner, more than cost. Insulting God’s word/Wilson doesn’t seem like a very positive use of your time to me. But who am I, but a stupid keyboard warrior just like you? Do what you want
@@aaronmutch1883 He literally says in the video, one of the "variables" for these blends is cost...You either have a comprehension issue or a hearing issue, which is it ?...Just because you don't understand the points I made doesn't make me stupid.. it's make you stupid....
If you don't already smoke, don't start. If you do start with pipes, the tobacco will hurt your mouth. Pipes are for those with several years of smoking under their belt. Pipe tobacco is generally very strong and will kill a newbie. (Tongue bite, strong & uncomfortable in the mouth, etc.) If it's not packed correctly, you'll also have a bad experience. Pipe smoking is an art.
I’d have to disagree with this take. I don’t think pipes are only for those with experience, and that comes across a little gate-keepy. As pipe smokers, we should be excited when folks want to partake in a commendable hobby
@@TimberSmokeCo It wasn't intended as gate keeping. It was a caution. I've never considered " don't start " bad advice. The smoke, although not inhaled, still coats your teeth, gums, back of the throat, & nasal passage, and it's not healthy for any of the above. Tobacco, in any form, is not good for you. To argue with me, is to argue with proven science. I stand by my statement, DON'T START. It's also extremely expensive and increasingly so.
Look - find a reviewer of tobacco (Wilson, whomever) and try out the blend the person recommends, but then go back and re-watch or re-read the review and see if you can ‘align’ your taste buds, your palate, with what the reviewer (Wilson, whomever) said. What you are looking for is alignment of your palate to the reviewer’s palate SO THAT when the next recommendation comes along, you will know that you two are in the same wheelhouse. I enjoy Wilson and his style but have found that the blends he loves are not ones I love. Doesn’t stop me from listening to his wisdom! But it does cause me pause when I make purchasing decisions. I review tobacco on Tobacco Reviews as TMS-Davis-CA and totally accept that many people either don’t like or don’t appreciate the style I use in reviews. What I do try to do is say, ‘this blend is like X, and Y, and Z, etc., so if you happen to like X, Y, and Z or one or two of them, then you will probably like the one under review. The problem is that new smokers need to get to around 50 blends covering all categories (English/Balkan, Aromatics, Virginia-based, Orientals) to know what they sort of like vs. sort of not like. So, if you are new, any reviewer suffers from the same issue - those who listen may not know enough to know what they like or don’t like, and there is no way a reviewer can help that person find a good blend (for them). Again, I don’t know Wilson (but I do respect him). What I have seen so far is that his palate is really different from my palate, and so while I love his channel, I don’t follow most of his recommendations. Hope this makes sense to people. Get a good alignment with a reviewer and then purchase.

An easy option that can help is a little bees wax, a very little goes a long way so start light and work your way up to the right amount.
This is a random question but when I smoke a couple of my pipes, they make a "whistling sound". Do you know how to fix that issue?
Check the airway for obstructions. It could be a piece of tobacco getting stuck.
