I do agree on the relevance of personal taste, but In my perspective, selecting the shape of someone's first pipe should also consider more practical aspects. For example, the desired duration of the smoke session will determine the size of the bowl, clenching would be easier for unexperienced pipe smokers if the pipe is bent, a narrow walled shape (e.g. billiard) would provide a warmer experience for outdoor smokers in cold regions, readers would prefer straight pipes for clenching (or churchwardens), writers would find useful the author shape, etc.
Thanks again for sharing your experience and ideas, and for presenting them in such a clear way.
    Best regards

I consider shape more in terms of functionality. The long stem of a churchwarden cools the smoke. The short stem of a bulldog means less weight, so it's easier to hold between the teeth for hands free smoking. A bent pipe lowers the bowl to make it easier to smell the smoke rising from the bowl for aromatic tobaccos, and so forth.

I started with a straight billiard, but found I like to smoke multiple bowls in a setting. I got tired of tasting pipe liquid and using pipe cleaners. So I changed to a bent pipe and have settled on a Savinelli 614 shape.
Growing a beard did definitely help lol

Thanks for the videos. I am a beginner and after watching your videos, I have learned the Breath technique and it works wonders. I also have a quality tobacconist right down the road called Briarworks. They recently moved their factory to town and sell Briarworks and Moonshine pipes. They are a wealth of knowledge and their customer service is fantastic. I already see a nice pipe collection in my future. I cannot agree more with your pipe selection. I walked in and asked them how to pic the right pipe. They let me hold everyone of them in my hand and suggested pipes based on how i hold it in my mouth and hand. I went with a Moonshine Cannonball. Keep up the good work!

Love this channel, thank you for putting the time and effort into this. As I have just got back into pipes I have been binged this channel.
I smoked hand rolled for about 16 years, then bought a cheap pipe and used it for a few months, vaped for 2 years and I still do but I have also treated myself to a Savinelli Tiger 626 and a Butz Mirage.
The first pipe tobacco I bought a few years ago was Petersons De Luxe which I enjoyed, seeing the selection of tobaccos in the US like the plum pudding compared to the UK is cruel, not to mention the price you guys get a 50g tin for compared to us.
    Thanks again.

I find half bends just right for me, easy to hold, less leverage against the mouth grip, a brandy or half apple. My Sherlock Holmes Peterson is one of my favourites. Corn Cob fir ghosting aromatics, Churchwarden for reading a book or when I feel Tolkien like, Bing special straight when I listen to my 78 swing and crooner collection. So it depends on the occasion and its good to have a small collection to choose from. I love and use them all. Lastly, if facial hair is such a plus why don‘t weirwolves smoke a pipe😉

I'm a shorter fella with a full beard. I started with a Churchwarden and still remains my favorite... however I just ordered a Cannonball pipe made by Moonshine. I actually mocked up the basic shape/size that the description provided out of Styrofoam just to see how it would fit and sit. It was crude to be sure and to help judge the weight I put a stone in the bowl. I think I'm going love this pipe and it just might be my new favorite.

The secret is not giving two %#@&$. Pick a shape you find attractive, if it smokes well smoke it. If not seek out a new. Smoke not as an accessory to your wardrobe, smoke because you are an adult who cares enough to indulge in the finer things life offers. It only has to be a rat race if you enjoy running. I myself hate running so, I always stand and fight! Good smoke too you all.

lightweight full bend, it hangs well below the nose and is light enough to not strain the jaw, rusticated for grip pleasure.
i like billiard bowls but that's only a visual preference and i guess because it is a tad lighter than many others.
there is a problem with these it might set you off, you cant run a cleaner down it as well as a straight stem.
if you want a pick of a favorite google:
    denver 119s pipe
i dont go out in public with straight stems i end up holding them because i feel uncomfortable. it doesn't look good with my face but these full bent suit me well and i often walk with it.

Therefore the most important thing for me is the flavor and pleasant discovery that is in the hobby and I want to pick the right pipe to meet that objective. I would like to know if there are pipe types and shapes that are problematic in flavor delivery or those that are inherently problematic to maintain? • @placeholder8671
      @placeholder8671 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

3 years late but imo you want something with a bit of a bend, and a slimmer bowl and shank if possible. The more horizontal the bowl of the pipe is from your mouth, and the heavier it is, the more work your jaw has to do to hold onto it.

Hey, Muttnchop! It's an interesting opinion, that you shared. I also would like to share my experience.
After trying a number of different pipe shapes, I came to the mostly utilitarian way of selecting a new pipe to purchase. I first consider what size of the chamber I want. Small for stronger tobaccos or big for lighter ones, wide for Latakia blends or narrow for straight Virginia or Burley blends (a single blend type tastes differently from different size pipes and it's a matter of personal taste). Then, I look at the weight of the pipe. Will I smoke mostly holding it with my teeth? Then it should be a lighter pipe or a bent shape, that feels lighter in the mouth. Our will I play with it in my hand, then the weight doesn't matter, but the feel of the shape does. Would I want a pipe to stand on a table if I'm smoking at my computer or during other tabletop activity? Or do I want a pipe that fits my pocket for smoking during a walk outside. After narrowing the choice with those criteria I'm going for personal preferences and pick a pipe that suits my liking.
That's probably why I ended up having a lot of different pipes and I pick one of them depending on what tobacco I want to smoke and what I am going to do in that time. I believe that there is a purpose for every pipe shape out there and it's more than just looking good when you smoke it.
    Happy piping!

This is all so true! I can't get big pipes cause my framework is small: smaller bones, smaller face, very small mouth. A big pipe with a big stem looks bad on me and is uncomfortable. but I had to buy big pipes to aknowledge that. Second: I only like bent pipes... the most bent possible (ideal is the oom paul shape), why? cause when I smoke, I look out and sometimes I read, so straight pipes are right in my field of vision. good video!

  • @0rcface
    @0rcface 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Choosing a shape is a tough subject. I have unfortunately spent a good deal of money only to discover that I don't like certain pipes. I recommend following Virtually Dead's advice and trying cheap pipes at first. To be more specific, make sure you try a straight cob and a bent cob. I always thought I would like a straight pipe, but I now find that some level of curve (even if it's just a prince) is far more comfortable.
As far a what looks good one me, welp, I just don't know. I laughed out loud at Chop's advice about facial hair because it is so true and I never realized it before. Although I'm getting older, my facial hair looks good after about a week of growth, but any longer than that and it looks terrible. And I just can't figure out what pipe shape looks good on this old kisser. Maybe I'll take Chop's advice and look at some Google images.

Cobs, Rusticated, or sandblasted. Personally I prefer pipes that I won’t have to worry about the Finnish as much and I can set down. Cobs are my favorite but for briar I like pokers and tankards

I have a pipe that feels so good in my hand. It fits my hand. It's a pleasure to hold in my hand. I don't think I would like a smaller pipe to hold in my hand, but it is a bit heavy to clinch. Always a trade off somewhere it seems.

You're definitely right mentioning that decent facial hair makes a difference. I personally feel that older men, past the awkward sparce facial hair phaze can better pull off a pipe. When i picture pipes in my head its usually an old white haired guy that comes to mind. They just look cooler. It is what it is. That doesn't stop me from trying tho. I just ordered a savinelli alligator in blue and cant wait until It gets here.

I just wanted to say I'm a bit jealous off my fellow pipe smokers south of the board as tobacco is so much cheaper in the US.. lucky...in Canada where I live and all over Canada tobacco is heart stopping ..I will give you a price mmm Captain Black Royal here in Canada 50 Gram pouch is 63 dollars in the US maybe a bit under 9 dollar's . I'm still trying to savor the smoke but my taste still needs work ..mmmm try try try is all I can do for now 😀..time to teach class happy pipeing..

    Greetings from Essex County, UK!
    I hope you're well.
Currently rewatching a lot of your videos, I need refreshing my pipe basics.
For a few years now, my go-to everyday pipe is an old Wessex XL120 (St Claude, France) rusticated bent billiard, 9mm filter, black.
It smokes very well, I've always used Vauen filters and never found too much impact on the tobacco flavours.
I like it because it's rather big, it looks rugged, not too heavy and despite its size I can hold it in without clenching too hard...
    Keep up the sterling work.
    Best regards,
    Manny
PS: I've never been a LOTR fan but I have always wanted one of these incredible looking pipes... How do they actually smoke?... Cheers!

I tend to like full bent pipes and occasionally churchwardens, because they take the smoke a little away from my eyes and I can watch as I light the bowl. Straights can be difficult as my vision is not wonderful. I don't set my preferences in stone though, and tend to use straights for aromatics and bents for English. It really depends what mood I'm in and which tobacco I fancy - a wider diameter bowl for English and narrower for aromatics.

I am hoping you can maybe expand on this with another video on how to evaluate quality from one pipe to one brand to the next . As a new pipe smoker from learning how to pack and smoke to looking at all the manufacturers out there how can one evaluate quality? What should I be looking and considering for an upgrade ?

Hey Muttnchop! I've recently started getting into pipe smoking, and I've had kind of a weird problem. So far I have tried three tobaccos, Dunhill's Standard Mixture, Super Value Natural Cavendish, and Nording's Hunter's Blend Labrador. But my problem is with the taste! Honestly, every time I have smoked, they just kind of taste... well, like smoke. I open the tins and just love the smell, and I can tell that they have a lot of deep complexities in their flavour, but I feel like they all kind of smoke the same, with the exception of the Natural Cavendish, which tasted much sweeter to me, though still mostly just like smoke. I assume pipe smoking is similar to drinking coffee, in that it takes some time to start appreciating and noticing the differences in flavour, but I figured I would ask an expert! Keep up the great content, you have an excellent voice, and your videos are very calming to watch!

fuzzy ferret - First if you are not smoking your pipe using the breathe method, then I suggest you learn it, I have done a couple of videos on it, that you learn how to smoke using the breathe method. Next, 2 of the tobacco’s you have sampled have a blend Component called Latakia, it’s a strong camp fire smelling component. I don’t particularly like Dunhill Standard Mixture, I agree there is not much taste there. Depending on where you live here are some suggestions of tobacco’s with great taste: peter Stokkabye luxury twist Flake its a strait Virginia that taste sweet and like caramel, Seattle Pipe Clubs Plum Pudding, it’s sweet, and tangy, CAO’s Eileen’s Dream, it taste like a caramel/Vanilla latte. 👍👍👍

I'm a pretty new pipe smoker as well, but Ive been wide open since I started. Anything I do I do it wide open LOL. I've spent countless hours researching and watching videos. There's alot to it, it's definitely not as simple as packing a bowl and smoking a pipe. It took some research and several dollars, for me to find some tobacco that I enjoy LOL! So, I'll save you the time and money. IMO I'd get some Lane BCA and use the breathe Technique like Chops says. It makes all the difference. Once I watched that video, it was like a light switch went on. I also like the Cult brand. Blood Red Moon and Conspiracy to be specific. But I think the Lane BCA is where it's at when you first start out.

I liked it so much, I went back a week later and got a Peterson Kerry 01, I liked it so much, I went back about 2 and a half weeks later and got a Peterson B11 with the silver cap and about 3 days ago, I went to pick up some tobacco and they had the Peterson 2019 St. Patrick's Day pipes and I got the 307 model. Literally just get the shortest pipe. Holy cow. My first pipe was one of those billiard pipes from a cheap company and it's so freaking long that clenching is uncomfortable. But I got a prince shape (Rattrays Lowland 46) and jfc it's such a big difference. I can't wait trying out a diplomat, bent rhodesian, or hungarian. I'm sure it'll be even better. Being able to game and smoke a pipe is so pleasant.
