I'm 26 years old and have been a fairly avid cigar smoker for a handful of years. I finally made the leap into pipes because of yourself and the gentleman from the Dry Creek Wrangler School. We sure could use more folks like yourselves. Thank you for the content!

How do you like pipe tobacco? I think cigars basically all tastes like cigars. Pipe smoking is much more interesting to me.

    • @clayfox899

Pipe tobacco is great! There are a lot of different options and it's entirely different from cigars. Pipe tobacco is much more attractive to the senses as well. Especially to those who don't partake. It's definitely a skill that takes some learning though, not as easy as lighting up a good cigar.

@@clayfox899 What I love with pipes are the pipes. They are more than just a means to an end. I have 5 pipes and 3 in my rotation. I recently started and expanding the pipe collection is both fun and expensive. Trying new tobaccos are also fun. Have you tried latakia? If not it's a must, it's in most English Blends.

Dear Alan, I'm Italian and I actually live less then 5 miles from the Savinelli factory in Lombardy! A friend of my father works there and he gifted me a beautiful Leonardo Limited Edition Pipe. I'm just starting my pipe smoking journey, but I'm thinking of buying a cheap pipe to begin because I'm afraid of ruining such a work of art. Thanks, Davide

the dispute about which pipe is better than the author's or the factory's is meaningless. The factory pipe can smoke much better than the original one, despite the cost. Now there are too many artisans who believe that in 2-3 years they have become great masters. In fact, in factories, most of the processes are also done manually, but at the same time there is experience accumulated over the centuries and the division of production, which, of course, is a step forward. And the experience in choosing briar is huge, as is the wholesale access to it. So, from my own experience, I vote for factory pipes.

I'm a lurker but I love to hear about pipes and stories from pipe smokers. I used to smoke back in my college days and for 10 years or so thereafter. I'd love to begin again sometime. When I smoked I had three Savinelli's (that I recall), a billiard, a bent bulldog and, I think it was called, a "vest" pipe-one of those where the stem bent back and it could be carried in one's shirt pocket. It was the worst pipe I ever owned. I had a few other pipes, all of them gone somewhere. My best pipe was an OTC pipe of questionable heritage. it was like an Oom Paul, deep bend and huge bowl and I could puff away for an entire episode of Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone.) That was back in the '70's! Ah, memories.
Be encouraged! You do a fine job.

Thanks for sharing. I’ve been pipe smoking for almost a year now and have only smoked out of Savinelli pipes. Affordable, look stunning, made and smoke well. Bings favourite I reach for mostly. My favourite shapes at the moment are the 811, Canadian, Zulu and bent Dublin. Haven’t smoked out of a 626. Definitely a 626 and a poker next on the list.

  • @johndonlan5956

I've been smoking pipes for 43 years now, and after about my first 6 months a tobacconist introduced me to Savinelli's Punta de Oro pipe (back in 1980) and I've been smoking Savinellis ever since. For the past 15 years my favorite pipe has been the 606 half bent rustic model. The bowl diameter to depth ratio is just perfect!
Savinellis do come with a balsa filter, having a triangular cross section. Now if that filter is pushed too far forward or too far backward so that it covers up the draw hole on either the stem or the bowl...... You will have trouble getting a proper draw. So the proper thing to do is to situate the filter halfway between the stem and the ball draw holes. That way you get a proper draw and also moisture absorption by the balsa filter.

Definitely a bit more of a challenge, but I enjoy it very much. Just picked up 4 more pipes today at an antique shop. They all are in fantastic shape. I enjoy the old stuff much more than the new. You mentioned the filters that come with the Savinelli pipes. I've been smoking pipes since 1994 and to begin with - without the filter. But when I bought a pipe in 2015 and it had a filter inside, I thought to myself - why not try smoking with this filter and so I did. To me, it turned out to be a pleasant experience. It certainly absorb most of the tar and nicotine and gives you the feeling of a cool and dry smoke. Most importantly, the aroma, the flavor remains the same. I think it suits me because I tend to smoke a bit "heavier", drawing with more strength than maybe other smokers do. I use 3 mm, 6 and 9mm in my various pipes. Greetings to you from Hamburg, Germany

my friend has this thing that happens when tobacco smoke goes into his mouth, i guess it's common, he starts salivating a lot which goes down into the bottom of the bowl and gets weird and gross, i dunno why i do not ever have this issue lol, anyways we ended up trying filters and it helped a lot to trap a lot of the wetness and keep it out of the bowl, i also think it makes ghosting(when the flavor of tobacco you smoked prior mixes with a new flavor) happen less, i just switch filters, also if you start a pipe and are forced to stop and let it go out for whatever reason, if you change filters before relighting your pipe it's less nasty and stale and whatnot

    • @PauleLR
      @PauleLR ปีที่แล้ว

Either the flavour is not effected or it smoothes the „heavier“ stuff. Both in the same time?

I prefer the Author Pipes. I don't clinch too much, mostly I hold them. The Author is a fine holding pipe when one wants to ponder some of the more weighty subjects of life. I have more Savanelli pipes than any other brand, not counting my cobs. I have a mess of cobs which I enjoy very much as well. As far as the negative comments, be like a duck, and just let them roll off your back.

Great vid… I switched from a lifetime of cigarette smoking to pipes awhile back and started with a Savinelli Trevi 626. I have a small collection going now but recently bought a Savinelli 601 and while wishing the stem was a bit longer finding it my favorite “sipping” pipe of them all so far. It burns effortless and smooth with full flavor from top to bottom with no fussing around. Any pipe that has me drawing hard or fussing with it tends to revert me back to inhaling most of it instead of sipping.

Hello! First time viewer and, now, subscriber to your wonderful channel, sir.
I am returning to pipes after a 20yr hiatus from working 70-hour work weeks fitting up natural gas pipeline sets here in beautiful Tennessee up around the Ridge, the Cumberland Ridge that is.
Now that I'm "semi-retired" I've got time to enjoy a briar on the porch & enough jingle in my pocket to get one of these fine looking Savinelli's w/o breaking the bank.
Due to the cooler weather moving in I suddenly felt like having taste of my old favorite tobacco from my Gatlinburlier(in Gatlinburg, TN) called, Mellow Moonshine. Smooth & on the sweet side, I burn it in my old Italian 626-type Spitfire Sport by Lorenzo also purchased from my Gatlinburlier some 25yrs ago.
Figured I'd look at new pipes when I came across these handsome Savinellis then, your great video. Couldn't have found a better vid or host if I had tried.
Absolutely admire your style & love & respect my brothers & sisters from the South, especially S. Carolina.
My family has been here in Tennessee for 300yrs cutting timber, stone & building villages since before Tennessee gained its statehood in 1796. Got lucky & married a sweet, green-eyed E. Tennessee girl born in South Carolina(she loves them boiled peanuts) & raised our son here in Mid-TN on my family's soil.
My family also loves Gone With the Wind & both my dear, departed Grandmothers instilled in us a pride of our heritage regardless of what may or may not be in vogue, as you put it so well. Like my bands, Alabama & The Band with Levon Helm on drums(The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down may bring a tear to my eye).
The story of the South is a bittersweet one. It's that bitter part that helps us appreciate the sweet part that much more and that is ok.
So, hold your head high amid the weak-minded these days and keep being yourself, brother.
I cant wait to watch all your previous vids & looking forward to your new ones already.
Didn't mean to "run off at the jaw on you". Hold your family tight & have a great Thanksgiving!
    Til next time.

Back in ‘73, I bought my first Savinelli, my best pipe at the time, a 114 Deluxe Milano. I still have it. It’s a good pipe and has been well maintained. I’ve always liked their bits, slim and trim and easily clenchable. Their styling is wonderful. Recently I picked up a couple of Punto Oros, also good pipes, shorter overall than my 114 and favorites for driving. My long term favorites are by Peterson and I add to that collection frequently. Both companies make good pipes, reliable quality and good design. If there’s any difference, I’d say Savinelli has better wood but that’s very subjective. There’s a good video on Savinelli’s wood resource that bears watching. I’m quite happy with both these factory pipes and see little need to spend more money…both companies have good high end pipes. Good presentation, thanks. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

I enjoy your laid back videos. My sons like an occasional cigar, which I've never cared for. One of them remembered I used to smoke some of my father's briar pipes, 30-40 years ago, so he bought one similar to Dad's...thinking I'd use it, when they're enjoying a family gathering cigar. He was right. In recent weeks, I've purchased a Savinelli Roma Rusticated 606 KS pipe. I love the look and feel, and am beginning to enjoy using their balsa filters. They don't impact my draw, plus they help me smoke cooler, and eliminate getting small pieces of tobacco in my mouth during those first draws. I doubt the 606 KS will be the only Savinelli in my small collection. While I find the Savinelli balsa filter hinders draw, I find the White Elephant "superflow" activated charcoal filter works quite well, as long as I make the pack of the chamber to be a little more loose than non-filtered pipes.

Love that shape, my experience was a bit better but not fantastic. After lots of reading and videos, many of them yours I purchased a Peterson B42 bent apple system pipe. Absolutely fantastic smoke. Thank you for the content Sir!

As somebody that has a TH-cam channel, I know what it’s like to get negative comments. I found that when you immediately delete them, and then block that person it helps flush that thought out of your head. I’ve only listen to a couple of your videos. I subscribed immediately. I don’t even smoke a pipe. But I can’t for the life of me think how anybody could even come up with one thing negative. So far what I’ve been listening to, is just your opinion. You state that at the beginning. I have not gotten one negative comment from somebody that actually has made a video. I find that very interesting. God bless you. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I find them very interesting. I did smoke a pipe while I was in college for one semester. I found that I was playing with my pipe and keeping it lit, etc. etc. instead of studying, so I had to quit.

I myself have a Savinelli Churchwarden. It has been my lone pipe for 36 years. It has developed a somewhat disquieting patina to the stem over the years, but it is a thing of beauty. I’ve always adored him.
    I call him Carlo.

Hi Alan! I agree definetely about your opinion about Savinelli They are amongst my finest ones in my collection. But I must admit that I bought them back in the 90's and therefore I don't know if the quality is still the same. One of them I smoked recently, a 804 KS in punto oro quality, The other two ones I own are still with vulconite stems and need to be refurbished, a 606 KS gold and a 624 KS giubileo d'oro. Especially the last one is a beauty and I can't wait to smoke it again when refurbed. All of them very classic shapes, almost as if holding a Dunhill in your hand.

I only have one Peterson but the rest of my pipes are Savanelli. 606 is my favorite shape but I am a 9mm smoker so I usually always buy my pipes from The Pipe Nook. Anyway great video as are all your other's. Thank you for what you do for us and much continued success with your store. Merry Christmas and God bless you and your family. Your friend Tommy

I enjoy your accent and videos very much. I see that you are an vid reader of history book. So am I. Savinelli makes pipes without filters. I just but an estate pipe, a long Lumberman, and it doesn't take filters.

I only have a couple Savinellis-both gifts-and both fine smokers. There’s so much quality in many of the mid-priced brands. The differences between pipe smokers make this such an interesting hobby. I have a 320 and enjoy it because I find it so easy to clench. That big stem just fits my teeth. Look forward to more videos along this line.

Watching your videos is what got me started smoking my pipes. I love listening to your wisdom. I grew up in southern Indiana, and we owned two farms. I can always relate to your views on getting back to the land. My favorite Savinelli are the 67 threes. I could not stand the looks of the 320. It was just short and fat looking. Then I saw the 320 KS Eleganza! That has been my favorite of the pipes. I like the thick walls of the 320 shape, but I didn’t like the stem configuration. The Eleganza in my mind is much more beautiful. You have a blessed week, my friend. By the way, i’m SnaponJohn100. I made this new channel so that my original one would not be demonetized over tobacco and smoking.

Hi Alan, if I may be so presumptuous as to call you Alan. I am relatively new to Pipe smoking and recently subscribed to your channel. You have been a huge source of information regarding the smoking of a pipe as well as a mine of information regarding navigating through these trying times in which I now find myself as a white male in his early forties. I am not racially or indeed otherwise prejudiced, I simply allude to my own race as I find that being white these days is almost a crime as far as some are concerned. Your philosophising has helped me to deal with such prejudices and might I add foolishness in a much more mature and sensible manner than I would have done previously and for that I am endlessly grateful. I wish you and your family well and hope the lord blesses and keeps you. Best Wishes from Kent in South Eastern England. Kind regards Wes F.
