I am a new to this hobby, but I have had a couple blends with my dear friends. My first purchases for myself were the Royal Blend from Macbaren, as it was one of my favorites my friend had offered me. The second choice was a leap of faith, and it was Sutliff's Molto Dolce. Molto Dolce is fantastic! It certainly is great for a wind down in the cool weather of winter, and while not marketed as a Christmas selection, it fits so well to that description. Anyhow, have a wonderful Christmas with family!
A good cherry-ish that is neither topped nor medicinal is Warped's Red Hunt. The cherry edge comes from the fermentation of the orientals and is subtle and smooth. It has become my favorite for a cherry type flavor.
Hey Wilson! I have not watched this yet, but plan to. Just wanted to wish you and your family a Christmas full of memories and blessings and a joyful and healthy New Year!
I love Mississippi River Reserve, Hobbits Weed, ole Shenandoah barrel 76, still have Frog Morton, W.O. Larsens Signature Blend and sooo many more. Am 70, been doing it for a while. Enjoy the channel! Dan
Great to hear your thoughts on these blends! A couple top ones for me this year have been from The Country Squire. I have very much enjoyed Hunting Creek and Parson’s blend. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas!
As a newbie, or rather a returning pipe smoker I am really enjoying Peterson's Standard and 965. I never realised tobacco could taste so good! Thank you for all the videos and Happy Christmas from Wales (and as we say Nadolig Llawen)
I only started pipe smoking at the beginning of the year. I’ve tried probably around two dozen blends. I’ve liked a lot of Gawith Hogarth like Dark Bird’s Eye (prefer the vintage cut except when it was really humid in the summer, then the easy burning shag was better), Ennerdale, Bob’s Chocolate Flake, and Brown Twist, but only if mixed with DBE. Arango Balkan Supreme, Sillem’s Black, and Peter Stokkebye’s Luxury Navy Flake were also great. Maybe I’m not a burley guy because I’ve been disappointed by the burley~forward blends I’ve tried so far, like Old Joe Krantz and Morley’s best. I bought a couple of 8 states but haven’t tried it yet.
Comparing my preferences to yours: I love OGS. One of my all time favorites. Sillem's Green is tasty, but not my favorite. I really really really don't like Blood Red Moon. I was so excited to try it and so disappointed. Half and Half is meh, no strong feelings either way for me. Black Frigate - I haven't tried. Hogshead - I smoked it once and set the rest aside to age. It's fine. Simply Red - I haven't tried. Cringle Flake '24 - I just smoked this for the first time last Friday. Quite nice although I found that the flavor faded throughout the bowl for me. Maple Shadows - I really enjoy Maple Shadows. I normally don't like maple flavored tobacco, but I really like this. Eight State Burley - I have a tin that I haven't opened yet, so no opinion. Thanksgiving - I haven't tried. Cowboy Coffee - Quite tasty. I enjoy it a lot. Keep up the good work Wilson. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
I've been on a Boswell kick. Northwoods, Military Force, Titus, and Countryside are the top of my rotation right now. Oh, i guess Peterson's Elizabethan Mixture to round out my top 5. Thanks for the great videos, Wilson! Merry Christmas!
I just started smoking two months ago, so I have tried only 4 different blends. So far CBRM and Wilke's Peanut Butter are my favorites. I don't "taste" anything as far as toppings go. Maybe it's because I'm 70 years old and my sense of taste has dulled over time. The others I tried were Peter Stokebye's Nougat and Wilke's 514.
I agree with many of your assessments of these tobaccos. Good video man. Happy Christmas and Merry Yule. May the all-father bring you peace and prosperity in 2025.
I've been smoking off and on for about 22 years. I find, in many ways 'what makes a good blend?' is often subjective. Often the more experienced smokers will tell beginners to buy an expressive pipe and to buy a blend that the experienced smoker prefers rather than recommending a blend better suited for the beginner. I tried Amphora Burley Pipe Tobacco and liked it. At first I thought I wouldn't like it but it's nice with nice room note, taste red wine or sherry, plum, fruity, light sweetness. Great for the holiday season. I find the best way to try new blends is in Corn cob pipe.
I've thought about trying Black Frigate- I do like CandDs Blockade Runner. For me I find a lot of their stuff hit and miss. Either I really like it or I hate it usually. Right now my tobacco stock is low- Macbaren Seven Seas Royal, Tombigbee (Old Toby) from Country Squire, and Carolina Red Flake.
Best new blend of 2024: GL Pease Horizons. Fantastically smooth, smoky and dark. All my runner ups will be HU tobacco, specifically Zulu and Khoisaan, which just hit all the right notes for me. I don't really consider tobaccos that have been out for years, maybe decades, when looking at 'best of' blends.
Did anyone else find this years cringle flake to be very dry flakes right out of the tin? Last years was too. I was under the impression that it wouldnt be so dry in 2024. Not that it makes it worse its actually right where I like it personally
I’m a McBaren Old Dark Fired fan and picked up some C&D Dark Fired to see if it was similar. It was not. Reminded me of a stinky cigar. I’ve been really enjoying Country Squires Tom Bigbee and Boswells Railroad Station this year. As far as codger blends I’ve kept some Prince Albert around to enjoy ever since finally trying it this year, a decent easy all day blend.
Video idea - Is there a way to confine smoke to one room and keep it from permeating the whole house? Smoking outside in the winter 🥶 is not enjoyable.
I agree with you and Cult BRM, I enjoy it, but it bites easy and has a little cough syrup to it, but I won’t complain if I got my hands on another tin. To me Country Squire Trumpeter is the best cherry blend on the market. Top 5 Country Squire Hunting Creek Country Squire Baker Steet MacBaren Vanilla Roll Cake MacBaren HH Old Dark Fired PS Luxury Navy Flake Bottom 5 C&D Haunted Bookshop - Tastes like a cigarette Country Squire White Rose -Too Floral Orlik GS. My worst 2 of the year were half & half and captain black original; both gave me terrible tongue bite. The best were Country Squire Hunting Creek and Quiet Nights. The most confusing blend has been haunted bookshop some smokes are incredible and other times they are just bad.
Cowboy coffee is one of the best blends I’ve ever smoked. I compared two bowls side by side, this years maple shadow and cowboy coffee… I should not have done that because now when I smoke maple shadow I think of how much better cowboy coffee is and I can’t enjoy it.
My top five this year 1: GL Pease Barbary coast 2: Sun bear but the 2023 Tupelo 3: C&D After Hours flake 4: Match Balkan Sobranie 759 5: PS Luxury Navy Flake Honorable mention: C&D Golden days of Yore 2024

Cbrm tastes like literally nothing I've tried it a few times and every time I have I have has zero flavor now I understand when they say "tastes like hot air" the saying is true
I've been enjoying the heck out of Country Squire English hybrid blends. P.S. Blend, Northwest Trek, and Hunting Creek. Very curious on your take of these types of flavor profiles.
@@BH-td9to In over 300 blends I've smoked, I don't think I've had 4 "bad" blends. I don't think Orlik is a bad blend. Most are well made. Some I just don't prefer. I enjoy Orlik, which I mentioned in the video.

So far I have a top 2, since I’m brand new to pipe smoking. HL Pease Chelsea Morning and Fillmore based off of your recommendation.
I want to see you try some of the HU blends since they are available in the US now.
Right now, I'm enjoying Peterson Sweet Killarney and 4th Generation 1957.

I smoked 8 state 2 weeks ago and I had been smoking it every once in a while before then but 2 weeks ago it tasted like a straight cigarette.

Have you tried the C&D Crooner? That one would make my own top 5 worst for sure. :)
Would have loved to try that watch city vaper but $25 for a tin of repackaged sutliff is just wrong.

If anyone likes anise, they must try GH Aniseed Twist. Boy is that good, dry and absolutely bursting with natural aniseed flavor!

The very fact this fella dislikes Half and Half makes me doubt any authority to his opinions. Half and Half is an undisputed legend.

What’s a good blend you would recommend to someone starting out, but who is also a cigar smoker?
Nightcap or 965

How do you pack OGS? I find that after 50% of the bowl it tastes like hot air.
Black Friget is sooooo good. I bet you know a Piper Professor who would help you there if you find a tin you forgot you had. 😉

i think our taste buds are the same lol

Orlik Golden on the top 5 worst blend? WOW, you obviously haven’t tried many bad blends out there. I think you need to rethink your list.
