After hours of hours of video to check on which headphones should I buy, I got it down to Surface 2 and XM3. I was about to click pay on the XM3 and then I saw this video. Thanks to you, I will now go for the surface. The points that are important for me are multi device, controls of the headphones, and I will use it for a lot of conference calls on video calls. Thank you for pointing out that Surface will be the headphones to go for it. Your videos are great and up there with all others great creators. Your channel is one of the most underrated channel on YT.
I know they are more expensive but damn, when you consider when the Sony's came out, damn, they still are competing against products coming out right now. Next gen should be insane.

How have you liked them? I’m considering both because I’m not an audiophile so I probably won’t notice the sound difference so the only differences that I am strongly considering is the wheels vs touch, the auto pause, multiple devices support, and comfortable-ness. The only the surface headphones still very comfortable in your opinion?
@@dannykurland3866 They are quite good! I only had issues getting it at first due to customs in my country haha But yeah, i love them, comfy and the audio is really good! Oh and the interface is better with the knobs, and the EQ in the app makes it even better with your custom settings :)
I just got the Mx3 for 259€ (2 days ago) and I didn't pick the surface over those. Having the best noise cancelling is worth any nice feature the surface got. This is true I wish the mx3 had such a smooth volume and noise cancelling button. The worst part is the non multiple device connexion, knowing that most poeple have at least a computer and a smartphone. Anyway, as I said, the noise cancelling is worth that if you're not always switching between multiple devices.
XM3 owner here, horrible microphones and no dual device connection are huge deals and I will never buy another headphones with these problems. I wish all the people recommending the XM3 over anything else would emphasize this as much as other things.
People who buy xm3 are mostly use for music listening through wired or Bluetooth. They don't use for calls. Connecting multiple devices though is good feature I would miss from xm3. Hopefully xm4 will have this feature.

I am going to give you a tip that will extremely useful if you elect to use it. When testing Noise Cancellation nothing beats AND I MEAN NOTHING a good old fashioned laundromat! Even in the era of Covid 19 where the number of people allowed inside at one time is limited; the din of Commercial Speed Queen Double and Triple Heavy Duty Washing Machines going into a Spin Cycle will literally shake the building. Before Covid; I used to go because I did not have a washer and dryer; not to play around with headphones. I had Audio Technica ANC 23 and the ear bud version and BOTH could silence all the aforementioned machines and dryers, regular sized washing machines and people talking. All the SOUND was reduced to a very low and distant buzz. On one occasion this particular laundromat had it's doors propped open and one customer backed her car as close as possible to the door and blasted the Stereo with Sub Woofers. Now that is NOISE from Hell! Washing Machines, Blasting Bass Music and a Huge Industrial Exhaust Fan...All going simultaneously and the Audio Technicas handled it with ease. And consider that brand/model of ANC is not even on the radar of "Best In Class"....So on your next test run--give this a try and see if I am exaggerating.
I am listening to this on my cheap broken headset as the left side hangs awkwardly from my head. Comfort wise I think anything other than my current arrangement will suffice edit: just letting everyone know I went with the surface headset 2, it's really great, and the software allows you to customize the various levels of sound to suit whatever genre of music you're listening to. I went with it because the Sony headset was said to have poor microphone, if it wasn't for that, I probably would have went with that. But honestly, I doubt it would make a huge difference sound wise. I am very satisfied with these. My philosophy was, if there is something you use everyday, make sure it's good quality, even if it is a bit more expensive. It's an investment in your experience of life at the end of the day.
Would you suggest anc headphones in general for studying? And which would you pick for that? I'm sick of listening my brother raging about fortnite in the room next to me while im trying to focus on my engineering studys^^
Thanks for the comp. I own the XM3s and love them, but they've been so frustrating for Zoom calls with students and colleagues. Never knew how much I needed another set for, as you put it, "all around" use. I'll definitely be pulling the trigger on the order. Plus, my wife always takes my 3s when she travels for work, which is fine, but when we travel together, she has to switch back to her old headphones or I use my Galaxy buds. Now, we'll have an extra pair for travel, and since she doesn't use as high a setting for ANC as I do, she'll be perfectly happy with the Surface 2s. I also just picked up the 16gb I7 Surface Book 3, so what better headset to pair and use than the 2s?

Keep doing that! an excellent way for someone who hasn't experienced noise cancelling/can't go to a store to try them on etc, to get a feel for the product. Surface HP2 are $399 preorder on the MS site here in australia, but can currently pick up a pair of the XM3's for $370 on kogan, this is a tough choice! If the HP2's come down in price in other stores, I'll be sold!

The mic quality is excellent in the newer models, so it only needs multi-point pairing to end up being best best wireless headphones of all time. Hopefully a software update will add that functionality.
It’s actually possible to pair up the sony’s with multiple devices. If you connect to say your phone and then hold down the power button for 7 seconds it’ll enter bluetooth pairing mode, you can then add devices through bluetooth. It doesn’t say this in the manual but i can tell you that it works 100%. I currently have it paired to my mate 20, my Ipad and my pc.

Decision made! Great stuff. Going with the surface 2. For me, I think a tricker user interface, no multi BT support and poor microphone quality (which i have pain with current headphones), will be real bug bearers. Can happily sacrifice ssslightly worse noise cancelling and sound quality (which i'll never notice because i wont own both). So long as the sound quality is of the standard of a $250 headset then im all good!

For the hundred dollar difference, awesome control scheme, and multiple pairing, I went for the Surface 2 no question... And I am very happy too. I did go for the matte black too.

i think for overall package/deal i’d go w Surface. Physical volume/NC adjusters + multi device connections + 100$ cheaper. the only thing you’ll miss from the sonys are the 5-6 hours from battery, and a bit better sound quality.

Just get the Sony's. I have the Surface Headphones and I broke the upper part, which is so common that someone did a 3d print of that part. I broke it again... now the earpads are screwed. Good headphones, just bad build quality.
How is the XM3 still $379 in the US ? It's been 259 euro's for quite a while in the Netherlands (283$) as it's normal retail price now that they're 1,5 years old; and the XM4 is coming out soon.

Here is one possible outcome from switching to the Surface 2 as a daily driver. The rotating dials are intoxicating at the outset, with volume being far more important. But 13 levels of ambient sound? Yeah, not so much. You are then left with a slightly less comfortable and slightly less vibrant sounding pair of cans. And now that you can buy a perfectly acceptable pair of XM3's refurbished from Amazon and $50 less than the Surface 2, I will not be switching.
Great review. I watched all of your Sony xm3 videos and was just waiting for it to go on sale until I saw this review for the surface. The better mic, controls, multi bluetooth connectivity, and cheaper price made me decide to go for the surface. I'm going to use this for pc gaming with mic to talk to my friends, movies, and music. Now to wait for tbe surface to go on sale😅
I got the SkullCandy hesh 3 recently. It’s relatively cheap for a set of decent sound quality, wireless headphones, HOWEVER there is a major design flaw where the part that connects the headband to the ear cup is very weak. Mine snapped and it is not an uncommon problem. This sucks. I’m gonna try to get my money back and pick up the surface 2’s. I use them with a mic for gaming a lot, in addition to music, movies, and tv. I’m disappointed but excited at the thought of having anc headphones
I bought xm3 last week from bestbuy, I used it to listen the song with %100 battery charge, with %60-70 volume up it only took 4-5 hours and bettery went down to %20. I don’t know how they say it’s 30 hours, the next day I returned it
Sony should get multi device connection. I don't want it to be introduced in the WH1000XM4. It should be a software update for the present sony headphones. Nobody wants to spend $350 every year
Guys if you want budget headphone, go for Taotronic 46 .. amazing one and the sound quality is pretty similar to the sony 1000xm3 .. I own both of them and you will never regret that.. the thing that TT46 looks not great on head.. otherwise if you prefer the sound over anything.. just go for them. You will thank me later

Finally someone talking about the ultra fucking shitty microphone on the WH-1000XM3, I mean, the headphones are unusable in many situations because of it, especially with the current situation that conference calls are a day to day occurrence.
Can you use Surface Headphones over regular headphone jack if you run out of battery? Also, can you pair these with a TV or Playstation 3/4 and play games with it?
Does the New Microsoft headphones have any latency when it comes to mobile gaming? (PUBG or COD) if anyone knows please let me know. I really like them and given the fact that they cost less and the mic sounds way better than the Sony XM3 is a no brainer to me.
Here in the Netherlands the XM3's are 260 euro and the Microsoft surface are 280 as of now and I just ordered the XM3's, of course in the superior color of matte black!
One question. You mention a lack of padding the the inner part of the xm cans. How about the size/diameter of each for big ears. As a comparison I've used Bose quiet comfort II and found them quite small.
So the Xm3 beat the SH2 in almost everything but you still liked the SH2 more only because of the multiple device connection, you should probably mention that in your very abrupt conclusion.
Just got a pair of XM3s for $240 USD. Brand new as well. So this is no longer a comparison. The better headphones are now cheaper than the inferior product
I have them on preorder but they’re not released until June 8th in the UK. A bad move really, I’m getting the point where I’m fed up with waiting and the excitement factor is seriously waining.
Great video!!!!!!!, please note that in some markets the sony is $250 USD, the only real up the surface headphones has on the sony is the ease and smoothness of multiple device integration (its amazing), other than that it doesn't really impress even at that price,,,,, remembering that the sony is last year tech and still beats the surface at anc, sound quality , battery life and yes like you said its more comfortable on the head.

Just snagged the mx3s on eBay for 180 brand new because the box was damaged lol, really loving how they sound.
A dial to control the Volume is so intuitive. Touch pads just don't cut it.

For the hundred dollar difference, awesome control scheme, and multiple pairing, I went for the Surface 2 no question... And I am very happy too. I did go for the matte black too.

Nice dials on SURFACE but as the sound its justify the 100 cheaper than Sony ... which is still the KING OF ANC / SOUND quality.
i think for overall package/deal i’d go w Surface. Physical volume/NC adjusters + multi device connections + 100$ cheaper. the only thing you’ll miss from the sonys are the 5-6 hours from battery, and a bit better sound quality.

Just get the Sony's. I have the Surface Headphones and I broke the upper part, which is so common that someone did a 3d print of that part. I broke it again... now the earpads are screwed. Good headphones, just bad build quality.
How is the XM3 still $379 in the US ? It's been 259 euro's for quite a while in the Netherlands (283$) as it's normal retail price now that they're 1,5 years old; and the XM4 is coming out soon.

Here is one possible outcome from switching to the Surface 2 as a daily driver. The rotating dials are intoxicating at the outset, with volume being far more important. But 13 levels of ambient sound? Yeah, not so much. You are then left with a slightly less comfortable and slightly less vibrant sounding pair of cans. And now that you can buy a perfectly acceptable pair of XM3's refurbished from Amazon and $50 less than the Surface 2, I will not be switching.
Great review. I watched all of your Sony xm3 videos and was just waiting for it to go on sale until I saw this review for the surface. The better mic, controls, multi bluetooth connectivity, and cheaper price made me decide to go for the surface. I'm going to use this for pc gaming with mic to talk to my friends, movies, and music. Now to wait for tbe surface to go on sale😅

Here in Sweden you can get XM3 for 2790 SEK while Microsoft wants Surface 2 for 2990 SEK. The choice is very obvious.

I got the SkullCandy hesh 3 recently. It’s relatively cheap for a set of decent sound quality, wireless headphones, HOWEVER there is a major design flaw where the part that connects the headband to the ear cup is very weak. Mine snapped and it is not an uncommon problem. This sucks. I’m gonna try to get my money back and pick up the surface 2’s. I use them with a mic for gaming a lot, in addition to music, movies, and tv. I’m disappointed but excited at the thought of having anc headphones

Just got the XM3s for $200. The new XM4s got released in September, 2020 and usually now sell for $350.
I bought xm3 last week from bestbuy, I used it to listen the song with %100 battery charge, with %60-70 volume up it only took 4-5 hours and bettery went down to %20. I don’t know how they say it’s 30 hours, the next day I returned it
Sony should get multi device connection. I don't want it to be introduced in the WH1000XM4. It should be a software update for the present sony headphones. Nobody wants to spend $350 every year

Guys if you want budget headphone, go for Taotronic 46 .. amazing one and the sound quality is pretty similar to the sony 1000xm3 .. I own both of them and you will never regret that.. the thing that TT46 looks not great on head.. otherwise if you prefer the sound over anything.. just go for them. You will thank me later

Stay away from Sony XM3. The build quality is terrible and hinges make squeaking sound with the slightest movement.

Finally someone talking about the ultra fucking shitty microphone on the WH-1000XM3, I mean, the headphones are unusable in many situations because of it, especially with the current situation that conference calls are a day to day occurrence.

Can you use Surface Headphones over regular headphone jack if you run out of battery? Also, can you pair these with a TV or Playstation 3/4 and play games with it?
Does the New Microsoft headphones have any latency when it comes to mobile gaming? (PUBG or COD) if anyone knows please let me know. I really like them and given the fact that they cost less and the mic sounds way better than the Sony XM3 is a no brainer to me.
Here in the Netherlands the XM3's are 260 euro and the Microsoft surface are 280 as of now and I just ordered the XM3's, of course in the superior color of matte black!
One question. You mention a lack of padding the the inner part of the xm cans. How about the size/diameter of each for big ears. As a comparison I've used Bose quiet comfort II and found them quite small.
I can get the Xm3 and Surface 2 for similar price. Which would be best to get? 2018 vs 2020?
So the Xm3 beat the SH2 in almost everything but you still liked the SH2 more only because of the multiple device connection, you should probably mention that in your very abrupt conclusion.

Just got a pair of XM3s for $240 USD. Brand new as well. So this is no longer a comparison. The better headphones are now cheaper than the inferior product
I have them on preorder but they’re not released until June 8th in the UK. A bad move really, I’m getting the point where I’m fed up with waiting and the excitement factor is seriously waining.
Great video!!!!!!!, please note that in some markets the sony is $250 USD, the only real up the surface headphones has on the sony is the ease and smoothness of multiple device integration (its amazing), other than that it doesn't really impress even at that price,,,,, remembering that the sony is last year tech and still beats the surface at anc, sound quality , battery life and yes like you said its more comfortable on the head.
