I've now owned the XM4s for a year and a half, and they are by far the best noise cancelling headphones I've ever used. But above this, the best thing about them is I probably use them for 4-6 hours a day, and I really only find myself needing to charge them once, maybe twice a week! And they battery still holds up a year later. 10/10 recommend

@@mdesportes no, not at all! There is a video on TH-cam where they talk about the x3 (x4 are almost the same) after a year of usage. And they say how great they are in that sense!
Are the XM4s good enough that I can take them on a run? Or to the gym? They will be stable and not fall off or feel like falling off while working out? Should be resistent to sweat. Also, how is the sound quality because I've heard people say ANC is the best but sound is not that great. You don't feel the base, dynamic is more flat.

Brought the XM4 recently in July 2022 with the XM5 out and I can say XM4 for the price is definitely still king. A great bargain with a great companion app as well. Was tempted by the AirPods Max but it was the price tag that put me off. Was only tempted because of the eco system but common sense told me Sony still is king
For me, the AirPods Max are better because I cannot stand switching devices, way too inconvenient since I have 3. But yeah, the XM5s are horrible. XM3s are my favorite, idk how people can stand wearing the XM4s, the headphone side with that thing in the headphone hurts for me. My ear must touch it or something. I’m probably just built different, worse :(
Same here . I love my xm4 and not even worth upgrading to xm5 let alone apple ipod max. I can't see myself spending well over 550 on some damn headphones that cost more than a brand new ps5

@@raghdabdalla4209 It's there, but it's more generous than you probably would think. You gotta be playing music pretty loud (as in potential for ear damage) in a pretty quiet area for it to be noticed.

That part of the video is wrong. Apple has already released a statement saying that if you “leave them stationary for 5 minutes, they go into a low power mode to preserve battery charge”.

I’ve had the Sony xm4 for over a year and even take them to the gym, and despite the sweat they still look like they’re in good condition and have never given me any issues. And the battery still lasts a very long time even over a year later.

@@falsecatalyst3936 The headphones themselves are quite nice. And yes, Apple actually beats XM4 in multiple areas. First is the mic and the other is transperency mode. As far as sound quality is concerned, I don't prefer Sony's boosting base by default. I am not an audiophile but I listen to a super wide range of music from metal, rock to hip hop, classical and synthwave. And not every where do I need boosted bass. Luckily, Sony's app allow me to tweak the EQ so I have dialed the bass down quite a bit. Apple on the other hand have a much flatter sound profile and is almost as good as XM4 in ANC. I believe Apple will give Sony a really tough fight with the next version of their headphones. There is plenty of wrong with Airpods but sound, ANC and ambient mode is not one of them. Its the price, design and feature locking to Apple devices.

I rarely comment on videos but wanted to share how incredibly accurate your review is Marc. Full disclosure... I’m an Apple fanboy.
I had the AirPod Max for a month and while it was a great audio experience and functioned as expected in the “ecosystem” there were things that were annoying... 1) the constant ‘nearby’ notifications on all my devices; 2) the weight of these headphones; 3) the crown was accidentally getting pressed if you lay down; 4) the lack of on/off definitely drained the battery in about 1-2 days; 5) lack of real case; 6) no pass through; and for the minority 7) lake of cord when DJing. Also, something about the noise cancellation was giving me a headache I often needed to use Off mode instead. For the price and these reasons, I ended up returning the AirPod Max.
On a whim after watching this video, I decided to try the XM4 and was delighted by what a different experience they offer. They just fit like regular headphones feeling light and cup my ears tighter. The bass is better, and having EQ allows more sound profiles, even if you use the presets. The headphones connect just as quick, the sound is spectacular, they’re comfortable and the battery life is superb. I often go 7-10 days without charging based on average outside the house usage! They have a real case and a cord. 360 sound you can have... tried with Tidal and Deezer and feel meh about it.

Absolutely the same here, we’ll except I had the XM4’s already before I got the AirPods Max. I held out on the Max’s for awhile and eventually BestBuy had them like $75 off and I had $50 BB gift card. Anyway I took the plunge and while I liked them for all the obvious reasons, ultimately I kept the Sonys as well and after 3 months I decided the Apples had to go. I just preferred the sonys for just about everything. And Im an Apple guy for regular life and work. Anyway. Don’t waste your money people. The XM4s are just better.
The lack of cord also makes it completely unusable for gaming due to the latency on Bluetooth
Sound-wise WH1000XM4 has a very altered sound the bass is very altered looking at the frequency response itself explains it. Airpods max is more accurate but is still colored.
The bass is not "better" on the XM4's from an objective, technical standpoint. In my opinion the bass on the Sony's is severely bloated and unrefined, rendering the headphones completely unenjoyable for me. It's not even a fair race, the Apple's outdo the Sony's sonically in every way.
And the look of airpods max makes you question "where's your helicopter bruh?" 😂

I watched this video a gazillion times while deciding between Airpods Max and Sony XM4. As a matter of fact, this video serves an extremely good review of the XM4 itself. My XM4 arrived today and I couldn't be happier.
Although, I'm heavily invested in Apple's ecosystem and I'm an Apple fanboy but I'm happy that I came across this video. Well done sir, you have earned yourself a loyal subscriber - keep on publishing quality content!

I bought a pair of the Sony for myself. Loved them so much that I got each of my parents a pair and they love them. But if a learning curve for them from all the extras, but they still love them!

Either a new case or a new Airpods Max without needing this case. Apple had already planned this which is why they released this shit case. Just a way for them to make more money 💰

The saddest thing about Apple is, they can sell literally shit and people still buy it. This airpod max sold out almost immediately after released. Don't get me wrong, I do like some of Apple products, but I'm not gonna blindly love and bought everything they released. Unfortunately some people did and that's suck.

Open yours eyes. Why do you feed off negative energy about a company. At least Apple cares for your personal well being unlike every other product company right now. Do you know what is happening to your privacy these days?
One word: ecosystem.
Apple locked all of its users inside its own ecosystem, so sometimes they’re almost forced to buy Apple products. Have an Apple Watch? You need an iPhone. Have AirPods and want spatial audio? Apple only again.
Also, Apple products look and feel “Apple”. You can take a look at the bezel and go, Oh, that’s iPhone! And some people want that recognizability.
I have the Airpod max and I returned my xm4 after trying out the AirPod Max. The sound is much clearer and nicer than the xm4. And I am not even an Apple fan.
I'm very deep into the apple eco system but in this case I just bought the XM4s yday. Now that I watched this video your points validated my decision even more. Also what I heard about the Airpods and their problem with condensation inside the earcups is a big nono for me. But most important for me is the ability to travel with the XM4s while I can see the airpods to be such a pain to travel with.

The spatial audio would be great for movies, tv, or gaming at late night in the theater. The theater has huge speakers and a sub that weighs about 200 pounds. So obviously watching anything late wakes up the entire house even on medium volumes. The spatial audio of good would be a great solution.

I have airpod pros, I was blown away by spatial audio. Then I recently bought some jbl gaming headset and it has the same thing, thought it was an apple exclusive feature
They wont sound anywhere near real theater
I got the XM4. They are good, really good. Combine it with an equalizer so you can balance the sound just to your taste + if you use it on PC, get a software amplifier, i use FX sound for example. You get the best out of your headphones that way.
Nice job describing the sound quality of both headphones. A lot of people can't seem to do this despite sound quality being the most important part imo. Keep is up!

I am an apple fan but that doesn’t mean that I had to close my eyes and purchase whatever Apple decide for me. As a consumer, I believe we have to enforce the companies to listen to us not the other way around. AirPods Max is not worth it in my opinion too. I easily can effort to purchase it but WHY? we as a consumer must show the companies that they can’t take advantage of us therefore with AirPods Max, Apple took advantage because as you said” People line up to get?????? Haven’t had the opportunity to try the maxes! I own both the xm4s and AirPods Pro! I agree that buying these gave me the best bang for my buck. I’m a musician myself and I the EQ feature definitely sold me! Sound quality is definitely subjective in many aspects!

I had no idea the AirPods worked like this. I assumed they were like any other headphones where they collapsed and had a case and would turn off and have a AUX port. I’ll consider the MX4s now
The part about the active noise canceling acting weird…when you lean forward the sound comes in more…that’s a design flaw due to the large cup size of the headphones.
When you lean forward and keep your head level your jaw bones changes position breaking the seal of the cups making the active noise canceling sound like it’s doing something when it’s not really. Sound is just leaking into the cup.
That’s why most headphones use a moral oval shaped cushion and not as rectangular as apple. The edge of the cup actually sits on the edge of my jaw bone rather above it.
For an experiment sit next to a loud fan with them on, tip your head to the sky, then down to your chin and notice the difference.
I’m surprised apple hasn’t come up with interchangeable cushions of different sizes for the AirPod max yet.

I Have the xm3 and use the hand over right cup feature and it still plays your music but lower then immediately resumes back to normal audio. I love the bass as well, insanely powerful. I use the mode “exited” and it’s perfect.
I’d rather just pause my music (usually podcast actually) so I don’t miss anything (yes even if it’s a song, I usually don’t want to miss some of it) and then click the sound control button. I have the XM4’s, and like him, I usually just rather take off the headphones, let my ears breathe a little anyway

To my ears these 3rd Gen Air pods are more comfortable compared to the newer Pro version with the soft gel tips. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxgl8SzyQoymMu-S3V55Dskg5QJ8xr1yCR That said, compared to the 3rd Gen, I notice these do not stay planted in the ear as well. One design issue I think, is you squeeze the stem and click it twice to advance your songs. On 3rd gen you tap the large speaker. The difference is by grabbing the stem each time, you tend to loosen the bud fit in your ear. Not always, but the bud falls out a few times while running. The old tap to change never had that problem for me. I would not have changed that tap function. That said, the newer Pro version sticks in the ear, almost airtight if you want that. I do not like that Airtight fit. So that's why I'd stay with this version as the best trade off of comfort, use, and overall feel.
Listening to that intro with my XM4s justify my pandemic-driven luxury purchase last year.
I wear my xm4s for around 8 hours a day, get kind of sweaty after 3ish hours and need a break. The ANC is an heaven-sent, helps me concentrate during studies, and sound quality is amazing.
Great documentary, thank you very much.. Makes me glad I ordered the Sony XM4 yesterday. My one son is an Apple supporter, my other son has the Sony MX4 and says they are the only way to go. He says they are the best noise canceling ear phones out there. Glad you mentioned the comfort. That is very important as well, and it is not an enjoyable experience lugging a heavy uncomfortable pair of ear phones around when you are trying to have an enjoyable experience. So, as you say, considering the price, the Sony XM4'S are a great way to go. So glad I took that route!

I got it for cheaper now one year afterwards, I got it case for the AirPods Max that turns it to low power mode while also keeping it protected and in total it was around 400 so I feel like it’s kind of worth it. Personally, it’s more convenient and it’s more aesthetically pleasing for me.

Hey there, just wanted to note there is some “hidden” sound profile options in headphone accessibility
And transparency control unless it’s disabled on max’s, to add to this on the AirPod Pros you can actually boost the transparency as well as reduce it so boosting it above normal level, also if you have for instance damage to one ear you can adjust the balance of the transparency, it’s very good, so if works on Max then this makes transparency even better
Transparency mode on apple is great! I love them on my AirPods Pro, I sometimes put music on low and transparency and it makes for nice background music in life, you can really have conversations with them on

As a huge user of many of Apple's products (Macbook pro 16, Airpods Pro, iPAD Pro 11/2TB/Cellular 2021, iPhone 12 Pro Max etc), this was a fair review. I personally have the Bose 700 (purchased prior to the arrival of the Airpods MAX), but in this instance, I would have chosen the XM4s, hands-down.

Had an opportunity to use AirPod Max. Nice. Then I bought the XM4 - and was blown away. Love the sound - nice solid bass and there’s an equalizer in the Sony app that allows pretty decent fine tuning. So, I’m in complete agreement with everything in Marc’s review. The Sony XM4 is just a better machine. True, Sony tansparency isn’t very good at all, but I always remove my phones anyhow. Price point was important too. I bought AirPod Pros. Kinda achieves a nice balance.

Sony all the way. Best bluetooth headphones I've ever owned. My only gripe with them is that the proprietary customization app that comes with these isn't available for Linux systems like Ubuntu.

Maybe for iphones and apple devices APM is the best . I have both xm5s and APM , but the airpods max is phenomenal in my iphone . The main thing with xm5 was , it’s not loud enough . APM is a perfect blend of everything.

Make sure to play with the EQ to find the best sound for you. It took me a good 2 hours to fine-tune everything but it made a huge difference (listening to rock/metal). I also found out that many people have completely different EQ preferences. I can't imagine how scr**ed I would be with the AirPods Max without an EQ to tune them. Once again Apple is too limitative.

I think to this day the XM4’s still reign as the best over ear headphones with ANC. I’ve had mine for several years and they are fantastic, super good quality and and noise canceling. Battery is great. The app is great, too. Don’t see myself upgrading anytime soon.

I just got the XM4's after long debating to get the XM3's. I'm not dissapointed at all. Especially coming form buds+. The only thing I really would like is a windows to headphones app like on android. The XM4's sound fantastic and the noise cancelling is just stellar. takes getting used to because I'm constantly wondering, did I put my washing machine on, did I put my airfryer on lol... I approve of your conclussion. It is time Apple puts their wallet 2nd and actually starts creating value for their worth.
XM5s are out now, I don’t like them. AMAZING sound quality, for me I’ve never heard anything that good, but the ANC is non-existent. I prefer the XM3s over the XM4s and XM5s, for me the XM4s felt super uncomfortable on that one ear with the thing inside, too small for me ig. Switching between devices has been a pain bc I use 3 devices, not 2. AirPods Max switch automatically between my devices, super convenient.

Another excellent review. Interesting to me as I have just purchased the Sony’s 4 days ago, and augment them with the AirPods 2 for all of the portability that they offe, and a pair of wired Audio Technica ATH M50x. I seem to have achieved a pleasant balance having great options across the board. Granted the total cost to purchase these 3 = $567.00. However, this particular combo costs pretty much the same as the Max and Fills all instances one might encounter with awesome results for any situation. Far exceeding the Max by far.

If you're looking for small true wireless buds to supplement the XM4s that have great sound quality and function well, I'd recommend the Fiil T1X (or if they've updated them since then). I had a pair of those and replaced them with an XM4. I wish I had kept them for running. Especially since they're only $40 ish. But anyway they sound really good. Like shockingly good for buds. Very similar to the XM4's more flat but crisp on the upper highs range sound profile. Not bass heavy, but they could dig pretty deep.

Good video, decent comparison. I love how you get right into it and don’t self promote and nag to subscribe for the first 2-3mins, like most (it’s 2021, we all know how to subscribe to content we like). However, one thing that I think was a glaring oversight in your comparison of audio quality is mentioning/comparing bluetooth codecs. Lossless audio in particular sounds noticeably better via LDAC on the XM4’s vs with the AAC codec on those same headphones. This is a comparison that can only be done on an Android device (or other type of DAC that supports LDAC), and so I’ll just assume that your review is limited by you likely being an iPhone user.
With the recent attention on lossless audio, I’d be really interested to see a follow-up video where you use an Android phone to compare the Max’s AAC to the XM4’s LDAC, as well as hearing what differences you appreciate between an LDAC or AAC connection to the XM4s.

I love that you compared the price to a better deal with Sony and apple AirPod pros and not just the Apple airmax. Although I love Apple products, I love Sony headphones for a good walk or even a workout.
I've had my XM2's for years now...I fucking love them so much. They've been used, abused, wet, dropped, slept on....Absolutely no issue whatsoever. Sony makes amazing products. The only complaint is the touch sensor on the ear that can be triggered with my shoulder or arm when working out. otherwise 1000% recommend

AirPod max owner here. I quite literally use these headphones 80/90% of the time while I am at home.
The weight actually feels amazingly distributed on my head, and better than most other headphones I have in terms of weight distribution. As a person with large ears/head they also fully cup my ears (and head) and I feel as if I were wearing nothing, whereas most other headphones tightly cup my ears and clamp on my rather large head.
The build quality is the best of any headphones I own, and dropping the headphones once or twice from my height has not dented them at all, only tiny scuff marks. I might be biased though because I love the feeling of metal appliances and electronics casings.
I miss the headphone Jack and any ability in any way to use a corded connection on the max’s at all especially when trying to use them on older or Nintendo devices, as DS’s do not have Bluetooth connectivity and the switch lowers the audio quality down to abhorrent levels due to the Max’s native settings trying to input sound while outputting audio to the Switch’s already finniky and weak Bluetooth.
The buttons are honestly one of my favorite parts of the max, the sound knob is perfected in every sense of the word and the simplicity great. The knob’s volume and video pausing features even work on desktop (non apple) computers which is extremely convenient.
The lightning port is stupid. It is the slightest bit convenient only because I have an apple phone.
Transparency is amazing, literally sounds like you have nothing on your head. Noise canceling is good enough I can hear podcasts while mowing or in the back if a plane at middle volume, but could be a bit better.
Finally, the bra of a case. I have not used this since the first week of owning this headset. This is the stupidest excuse of a case I have ever seen, and I have just footed the extra charge time needed instead of using this “Silicon Valley special” of an idea. Almost as egregious as the design of the apple mouse.

I felt like watching a Sony advertisement tbh
If you have Apple products, do yourself a favor and stick with the AirPods. I own both AirPods Pros & Max and it's so easy switching between three or four Apple devices; I just have to put on my AirPods, and it literally auto-switches to the device I'm using at the moment, no clicking settings or anything. With the Sony XM4, it does work with two devices at the same time, similar to AirPods seamless switching. BUT when you toss in a third or fourth device, it becomes a hassle, gotta go to Sony App, disconnect X device and connect Y device. And then you forget which one is connected and then you gotta do whole thing all over again.
Also, the transparency on AirPods Max is not even close to what the Sony XM4 offers. The XM4, I can’t hear anyone talking to me with Ambient Sound 20, and low volume music; people have to tap me or wave their hands to get my attention. With AirPods Max, I can hear people talking on Transparency and mid level volume on my music.
I do agree with you. If you have more than 2 devices that you switch between, the magic of the apple ecosystem may make it worthwhile. And the transparency mode on the max is the best implementation I've ever seen/heard/used
Well it's not fair to compare the easy connection between 2-4 devices with Sony while using "Apple" products. Try switching Airpods Max from Android to Windows. In the end, if people who is deep into "Apple" Ecosystem then Airpods Max is better for them. For everyone else Sony might be the better choice, unless they want to spend more to get into Apple ecosystem

I honestly don’t like the Pros much when spatial audio is off, but they’re nice when special audio is on. Overall sound quality of everything I’ve tried recently, though, is clearly inferior to the B&W P7Ws I got a few years ago. I’d love something with more modern Bluetooth, but I want the sound quality to be high, too. I’ve loved wired Sony headphones like the 7506 and 7509 used for recording but not he Bluetooth ones too much, but haven’t tried the very latest from Sony yet. Have to find a place to do it!

Excellent review, personally I'm in love with my Xm4s the best things I ever bought, I was just here to see should I have waited for airpods, and no, I still feel I made the right decision.
My one thing with my xm4s, the battery is not as good as advertised, I get about 15 to 20 hours but I have all the extra bells and whistles on.
The "little" AirPods are *phenomenal* if you have Apple devices. In terms of over-ear/noise-cancelling sets though, the Xm4s are awesome.

Do they even have wind cancellation mode? I love that about my XM4's.
A couple of things to note here:
There has been updates to make the AirPods Max ANC algorithm more consistent, as commented on it 9:54.
At 7:38, there is an extra setting called "Headphones Accommodations" in accessibility that will allow you to make *minor* adjustments with how sound is reproduced, mostly mids-high boosts. It can also be handy to provide accommodations for anyone with less than perfect hearing.
At 4:47, the headphones *do* go into a lower power state after ~10 minutes or so, but it still sucks that they don't turn off.
Really, the only reason to go for AirPods Max at this point is for multi-point bluetooth connection with Apple devices. Not really any point unless there's a major preference for comfort or aesthetic.
Otherwise, good review and extensive conclusion!

I’m pretty sure after all these reviews Apple is going to release a “sport” version of the AirPods max that is the same but lighter and cheaper materials for around $350. That way they’re far more competitive with the 1000XM4.

Your opinion is absolutely correct.. Initially it was worth pricing high for apple products but since 2-3 years they have nothing introduced anything amazing besides increasing the screen sizes or adding one-2 more cameras but they have become overpriced and it’s not worth… They are launching almost every kinds of products that also not making them unique as initially it was. I think apple needs to work on these if they really want to keep growing genuinely

The price on the AirPods Max dropped down to $439 on Amazon the other day, which made them more reasonable. The firmware updates make the battery last much longer without the case and the equalization can be set under accessibility-> audio and video -> Headphone Accommodations. I like them since they sound great and work well in conjunction with my hearing aids vs the AirPods Pro.

Great video. However, here are 2 things that need correction...1) they do go into low power mode after a certain period of time when not in use 2) if you are using an iphone with the Max, you can use the built in EQ. It’s in the settings menu under Music.

Well, about the sound quality, the point that many reviewers are not considering (probably because sony phones are not popular anymore) is that Sony also has its own ecosystem and if you have a sony phone you can use LDAC, turn DSEE HX on and get way cleaner audio.
LDAC is part of Android starting from Android 9 if I remember it correctly. So it is available on any Android phone
@@726f6f74 Correct. I thought Android was still only using aptx and not LDAC (because that's a sony codec, one could only assume they would keep it for themselves like Apple lol). But DSEE HX is an exclusive feature on Xperia phones.

Thanks for the honest review, using the xm4 almost 2 years now an I'm a happy camper battery life, sound quality, comfort is amazing. Never had a problem with the touch pads. Don't use transparency mode cuz I don't like the static sound of the background noise.
