With the commander changes, if you put your commander in the command zone instead of under the grasp of fate you won't get your commander back once it leaves.
I was wondering about that, I was told that there are certain exile effects that allow your commander back to the field from the command zone once those effects are gone. Do the changes with the commander mean your commander will never be returned from the command zone now from any exile effect?
@waynereed836 yes that is correct. Because how the ruling works that when it changes zone you can move it to the command zone but it will not be in that other zone anymore so it won't come back from exile effects.
Few necessary corrections: 1. Grasp of Fate doesn't have a leave-the-battlefield trigger. The exile effect simply ends. The way it was narrated, it's as if it could be Stifle'd or something like that to keep the permanents exiled forever, which isn't true. 2. Since Ryan returned Rionya to the command zone, it shouldn't have returned to the battlefield. It used to return when re-zoning the commander was a replacement effect for exiling, but not anymore: the commander is exiled, then moves back to the command zone, meaning it becomes a new object and can't be tracked by Grasp of Fate's ability anymore.
Correct. It is no longer ruled that way unless they choose to keep it in exile. 1 shot effects like Grasp of fate that do not say “card” do not track. I see judges look this up frequently bc there are so many imprisoning effects with slightly different wording.
@@juggernautstark1 It's not because it doesn't say "card". It's because an effect can only track a game object through one zone. The commander moved to exile with grasp, and then re-zoned with the commander rule and put into the command zone. So the grasp can no longer track the card. It can only see the cards still in exile that it put there.
@@Repaurcas I think it used to track (because putting the commander in command zone was a replacement, so grasp of fate could check where the card went instead) but now is no longer the case. With the new rule the commander goes briefly to the exile, then a state based action allows the owner to put it in the command zone. So grasp of fate will still look in the exile to return the creature (because this is where he put the card) but will not find anything because the commander left the exile soon after arriving. Or I can be wrong in reading how the new rule works.
6:10 Ashani could have gone for a win attempt. Kiki, copy Dockside, untap Kiki, copy Recruiter, get Bellringer, play Bellringer with Kiki already on board
5:40 rionya should not enter if it was moved to the command zone. The grasp of fate sent it to exile, and it was subsequently removed from exile by the command zone state based action. Therefore grasp of fate no longer tracks that object.
Im wondering what would have happened if one had made a humble defector token copy with kiki jiki instead of rionya. From my understanding, this differs in that rionya copies still get exiled under opponents' control, but the kiki jiki copy would not be sacrificed. Anyone know for sure?
I saw that too. I had to go back and check because I thought I must have missed something but I think Ashani paid 1 more than necessary. I don't think it affected the game but may have left them with one more mana for interaction.
@@PlayingWithPowerMTG hah, fair! I don't blame the player, I blame the card. Rocco (and the player moreso) POPPED and it was great. I am impressed with seeing different lines of play, such as the Rionya in this game, and I LOVED the Raggadragga deck a while back, good times. Keep up the good work, love the content!
I love how once the control deck had been booted out of the game, it was back to back to back win attempts from the three remaining players. As a stax-afficionado, I feel that pain 🥲
Ashani picked a weird loop for Rocco. You can do a much easier one without tutoring since Sabertooth + Extortionist is infinite mana (and bounces) you still eternal witness -> kiki but after that you can just use kiki to copy literally any creature, bounce with sabertooth then replay and make another copy netting infinite copies. Sounds more complex typing it out but anytime I don't have to tutor in EDH I try not to lol

Yeah this was my concern about Rionya. It should have stayed in the command zone
Exactly what I came to say, mistakes happen
man I had to check the grasp of fate commander interaction. Pretty sure that doesn't work anymore
It doesn't.

This video needed a Most hated card award, that goblin engineer got so mutch interaction.
Rionya was absolutely wild.
Tendershoot dryad in Rocco as well???
What a game
Loving the new titles, gives each game more personality and expectations instead of just seeing commander's named!
always love how clear your videos are with what is going on! fun game
How do you misplay your Otwara on humble defector so bad?
This was a good game. Almost perfect.
If ryan puts his commander into the command zone he wouldn't have gotten it back when grasp leave the field right? Unless the commentary was off
It's not off, grasp of fate tracks even to the command zone, there was a Rules Change about this like 2 years ago I think
