    Yes this was a one take, unscripted handheld video with minimal editing. But i wanted to talk more about this.
    ALso, i forgot to mention in this video, the entire top component of the printer frame was shipped incorrectly assembled and i had to rebuild it the right way on stream for assembly
    Its a 600$ machine, it shouldnt need to be mucked about with for it to function properly out of the box. Also, in regards to the injection molded parts, there all single component parts, so if a bit is mis aligned, you cant really fix it, the whole assembly needs to be replaced. and no, most voron mods and parts are not compatible since the extrusions are a different style

    👍You’re absolutely right, Nero3D, and this is exactly why we valued getting your professional opinion on the machine before launch. We are working to resolve these issues, most of them software and profiles, but also the hardware issues you pointed out, well before customers get the final versions in their hands. Thank you for your honest feedback, as it helps us put out the best product for our end users.❤

    The 3d printer "race to the bottom" usually means that you'll get the bottom of quality. The real focus should be put into the "race to the middle". Something in between a Bambu Carbon X1and an Ender 3.

    I mean, yeah - it's a manufactured machine, so some of your criticism is valid. However, tinkering to solve small problems on this machine can't be compared to spending 3x as much money and 50 hours building a voron. In that regard, this machine seems absolutely brilliant for what it is. Okay, so yours had a faulty bearing stack. Ask for a replacement, replace it, and done?

    This contrasts very interestingly with NextLayer's video - in that he acknowledges some of the same weak points but he's coming at the printer as a pre-production sample being sent out for feedback, much like you've described the Magneto-X. So it's intriguing that the communication was different for you.
    I do think leaving off the panels was a good idea. Bambu did their enclosed ABS-and-hotter printer first and then offered a discounted machine aimed at PLA/PETG, and I feel like the perception of that was super negative. For the first - what was it, a year? - anyway, the period when only the X1 and X1C existed, so many people were whinging about how many hoops one had to jump through to print PLA on the machines (that were, of course, never intended to be PLA workhorses). And then when the P1S was put out for those users, everyone whinged about how it was "just an unfinished X1." In this case, Sovol is being upfront: here's the printer, it's set up for PLA and PETG like most of you use, if you *want* to print with ABS you can make your own side panels or we'll sell you some for an extra bill.
    Also, I *really* think that any printer shipped today needs to have an all-in-one nozzle and throat. While I can see the value in wishing for a standard to emerge for that, I also am well aware there isn't one yet, and so everyone is going to try their own path. Personally I fell E3D ought to just drop the cost of liscencing the Revo down to a bare minimum and try and push to have that become the new standard, but that's not actually my decision to make. In any case, the whole "screw together three different parts that are all made from different metals and hope that it's tight enough to not leak all over the place" V6 style hotends are horrible and dead tech and need to go away toute de suite.
    So I disagree with you that those two traits are bad things and "not finished." The software issues, though... that's not so good.
    I mentioned on NextLayer's video that I was disappointed that a company selling 3d printers wasn't using 3d printing to produce plastic parts (and at the same time help push large-scale additive manufacturing), and your issue with the bearing stack makes this doubly so. If you're able to get in contact with another review/user/whomever, I'm very curious as to how wide-spread that issue is.
    Anyway, really cool to hear the perspective of someone who's thoroughly versed in Vorons!

    • @CanuckCreator
      @CanuckCreator  หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      If your gonna sent a printer, thats basically trying to copy a voron, to someone who runs a youtube channel thats features a lot of 3dp content, and who is also on the voron team itself, im gonna judge it like a voron
      and it comes up lacking in pretty much every field. There are some nice points, the way they did the firmware is ok, and the servicability is good too. BUT
      its not a voron
      The resemblance is just cosmetic, no parts are compatible, the frame and extrusions are different profiles, it is its own thing, other than being a flying gantry corexy, it has nothing in common.
      As for the panels, vorons are basically known AS ABS printers, thats what there designed to do, and for how much Sovol has plastered the name VORON on their maketeing and even box for the printer, it doesn even COME with a ABS/ASA profile included, just pla. and now, anyone who wants panels needs to pay for them, (and pay for seperate shipping) for a couple bucks worth of acrylic sheets with holes in em to enclose this.

    • @user-zx4vq4uk9c
      @user-zx4vq4uk9c หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I disagree about nozzles and throat all needing to be one piece, the system has worked fine on quality machines for ages and combining all of the parts is just wasteful every time you need to replace it

    • @davydatwood3158
      @davydatwood3158 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@user-zx4vq4uk9c For a very, very long time 3d printing has only been accessible to people who knew how to *build* a 3d printer. One of the biggest parts of this was the nozzle system. I spent nearly as much on replacement hotends for my Ender-5 as I did on the printer itself because getting all that crap properly butted together is REALLY REALLY HARD.
      I'm glad for you that you've managed to get good at a really hard thing, but pretending it isn't really hard just because you've learnt to do it is a disservice to both yourself and everyone who *hasn't* mastered it.
      Making 3D printers available to the masses means eliminating pain points, and the V6 style nozzle is a massive pain point. I bought an X1C specifically because of the all-in-one nozzle design, and while I'm happily upgrading to a Revo to improve the nozzle swap and cross-platform capability, the system is orders of magnitude more reliable and I will never, ever, ever, buy a printer with a multipart nozzle ever again.
      So now the only question left - and neither of us have data on this, of course, so this part is, I admit, all just opinion and speculation - the question is, are more potential cutomers like you, or are they like me? E3D, Prusa, Bambu, and now Sovol seem to think more people would rather have the single part nozzle.

    • @davydatwood3158
      @davydatwood3158 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@CanuckCreator I don't disagree with anything here, I just think that from Sovol's perspective, as they try to sell this printer to people who have heard of Vorons but aren't actually interested in *building* a Voron, making the default printer optimised for PLA and making the ABS capacity an "upgrade" is better marketing than making the default printer optimised for ABS and making PLA a "downgrade."

      I have a SV06 plus. The PSU was jamming FM-radios in a 10 m radius until I replaced it. There seemed to be no electrical filtering in place. Also, no power factor correction (which must be installed by European law). It also jammed its own control board with the PSU, which therefore randomly malfunctioned (crashes, freezes, random z-offset which buried the nozzle in the bed, wrong temperatures (unless -400 C sounds right to you)) ... Some time later the power switch melted. Oh, and the “temperature-controlled fan” was a full-on joke in the PSU; it is directly connected to +24 V. Maybe they meant something like “off when molten”.
      The bearings were shipped prefilled with gravel (okay, not gravel, just ungreased, so disassemble it was). The cooling fan for the mainboard only runs if the part cooling fan is on. Better not print something without cooling.

      That og spool holder is only needed for the first prints, isn't it?! Because you can print your own since this is a 3D printer!? You can print one with bearings or simply use a dry box. I don't see why a simple plastic part would be anything noticeable on a 3d printer.

    A commercial printer that satisfies my requirements just doesn't exist so far as I can tell, at least until you get above a $5000 price point (which I absolutely can't justify).

Move the printhead and see if the belt is slightly twisting on the roller during a change in direction. Fiddle until it doesn't twist any more. For me, moving the threaded screw that attaches the pulley some fraction of a mm inside the boring hole did the trick.

Since it was a prusa clone, it should of had a prusa slicer config file already done but nope. I sold that printer to a friend with the configs I made then I got the sv06+ since it was larger but once again, I had to dial in the print numbers and start up gcode over the span of 10-15 different things being sliced and printed.
    Now after seeing this video of the rushed sv08 is, its tempting to spend my $$ on the Bambu Lab A1 with AMS since i know that will have dialed in configs and the printer will have better self testing/calibration features.

    Although they shouldn’t have to, if the community rallies around it you could indeed have a pretty good printer I think. Make ABS STL files as an option to replace/modify injection molded parts, fix the broken things in klipper (and maybe add a pi), and honestly maybe just mount a stealthburner on the thing and you have a half decent V2.4 alternative. That said, there are Voron BOM in a box kits that are probably similarly priced and won’t have these problems. If this thing goes on sale later on in the 350-450 price range it could be pretty great. At $500+ it has to compete with the P1P and P1S and I’m not sure it worth this unless you NEED the print volume.

    There's no "we're in the future" when it comes to this kind of products. All these Chinese manufacturers expect their users to be testers too, because they do very little to no testing themselves. I'm 100% convinced that they know about the issues, but they don't care too much, because they released everything open source, expecting the community to fix the issues (and they will very likely fix them eventually). It's our fault because we buy products like this and thus we allow this situation to carry on. Then again, we buy products like this since we don't really have options that are not insanely expensive for no good reason or don't expect you to be a tech guru and build the printer yourself pixel by pixel. I really don't see this situation changing anytime soon.

    One slight correction on the voron homing procedure. First difference is that a stock voron uses a z endstop for homing, the sv08 uses a virtual endstop, the probe. Second, the z endstop does nothing, its useless without plugins. Probe results override z endstop values, so lets say your z endstop says you are at negative 10, the printer would move up to 0 + initial layer height to start printing. Meanwhile according to your probe the bed is right here at negative 10, so you start printing at negative 10. This is why the stock start gcode didn't call or create mesh. Just a home, qgl, rehome z, start print, so you always start at the same height regardless of z offset values. Unfortunately this was only true if you used a same thickness build plate, as you never measured the build plate. A proper use for the z endstop only came with automatic z offset plugins. Unfortunately these plugins force you to use the endstop as endstop and not a offset switch, i personally would prefer to use the probe for homing, better when the bed/gantry is severely tilted after maintenance

    • @CanuckCreator
      @CanuckCreator  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You dont need plugins to use both a Z switch for the nozzle for z offset and a probe for meshing and QGL
      That can be done in a normal klipper printer.cfg file and has been the norm with the voron v2 series for half a decade

    • @kilianlindlbauer8277
      @kilianlindlbauer8277 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CanuckCreator it doesn't adjust the z offset. Probe values have a higher priority than z endstop values. Lets say your z endstop is calibrated and 0 is actual 0. Your probe trigger drifts 1mm (exaggerated of course) when switching from pla to abs. You do your normal homing and leveling (home all, qgl/z tilt, home z again) and afterwards a bed mesh. On abs your probe results match your z endstop results, no issues there. But then you print pla, your trigger distance increases on your probe due to the lower ambient temperatures, your first layer now prints in air. You can even home z another time after the bed mesh, it will still print in air. The probe trigger points are still at z=1, homing doesn't change that. If it wouldn't be that case, wouldn't that render the z offset plugins useless? Also where would the endstop based value be applied on the mesh? I personally haven't seen anything of that in the klipper docs.

    • @CanuckCreator

    • @kilianlindlbauer8277
      @kilianlindlbauer8277 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CanuckCreator yep, no automatic z offset shenanigans. No bed mesh, so the endstop is what counts. Nozzle height will always be the same, given you build plate has the same thickness. But as said, dramatically changes when using a bed mesh. Sure, you could probe one, test print, save probe z offset and reprobe and store the mesh and use the saved one and your z height will also be the same regardless of what distance between probe trigger and nozzle you have, but as soon as you need a new mesh, or even probe at a different temperature, you have to redo your probe z offset by hand. The sovol should calculate the z probe offset automatically, but since it uses a inductive probe, you still probably need to adjust it when you use a different build plate.

      "It's them yet again just copying someone else's work." ... which is the basic idea of Rep Rap! That's in essence what DIY 3d printing is all about.
      And it's the same thing, all the other do as well! Take Bambu Lab: they copied Voron, Klipper, Prusa in many ways without giving anything back, not even acknowledge the work of Klipper or the Voron team. Within days they were called out with their Bambu Studio and admitted they took the best of PrusaSlicer.
      But this SV08 in contrast to a BL X1 is quiet affordable (which contributes to accessibility). It's repairable, mod-able, reproduceable... For me that are very good steps in the right direction. Of course you can get better machines for more money. That has always been the case.
      But after BL has woken up some competitors ... it's a very good sign more and more "Voron like" machines come out.
      6 years ago you could get a well working Prusa for like 1000 bucks or an "i3 clone" like an Ender 3, i3 mega or similar for 250 - 350 bucks. It's good to have both options.
      And since you cannot just buy a Voron, unpack it and start printing ... those open Klipper machines like K1, K2, SV08, Ender V3, SV07 and more are a really good base line for people starting with this hobby and not wanting "just a printer to print". Those still can buy Bambu Lab or even Prusa.

      At least Sovol KEEPS their stuff open-source. I got no issues whatsoever and I'm excited to see it's final version. No idea if it'll be any good or worth it, but you definitely can't knock them for creating an open source design FROM an open source design.
      Bambu Labs meanwhile takes open source stuff and then makes it proprietary, and gives nothing back.

    Let’s not forget the sv05. Not corexy, however never really fixed the hotend/extruder issues and it faded away like the ender 7 did. Sadly the ender 6 had a lot of potential but was no love in the long run.

      The sv05 was just an ender 5 clone, and creality making the 6 and 7 arent really relevant to sovol

    • @trugbilddrachen
      @trugbilddrachen หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@user-zx4vq4uk9c I respectfully disagree. The sv05 was not an exact clone. The hotend was completely Sovol and not like the ender 5 pro. Also Sovol improved some areas where the ender 5 fell a little short. Sovol and Creality are Pretty close BFFs with most of Sovols printers until the SV06/7 being made mainly from Creality parts. Even the SV04 was a Creality main board for idex. The ender 6 and 7 were just another example of a company that had a product and left it behind. Nero was correct in stating that the days of “we will do 85% of the work and the user community will fix what we didn’t” is very true. As I said I want the SV08 to succeed, however if what Nero received was a production unit. No thanks right now anyways.

    The Arco is half-baked too, and the K2 is in a dubious state given Creality's history of hardware issues...
    It's really surprising that these companies are having such issues with design and prototyping when the solutions are already out there, and they have so much previous experience.
    It's like they just don't understand what it means to make a consumer product.
    The technology is changing, and their customers are no longer interested in dozens of hours of tinkering to troubleshoot issues and ensure the reliability of $1K machines.

      Its cus they dont, many of these companies engineers/designers just work for the companies and are not actually involved the the hobby, its "just a job" and i need to make the thing and ship it.

      @@CanuckCreator, I am a self employed mechanical engineer. I have done design work on ship engines and steering machines. Air turbines. Furniture. Patent engines etc. etc. These are not my hobbies, and it's just a job. And my job is to perform as well as I can and make sure the products is as good as possible. I have never met an engineer that doesn't feel a responsibility to make the best, safest and long lasting product as possible. The engineers are not at fault. It is the company management that set unrealistic deadlines and decide to take a chance and ship an unfinished product.

    I think all the reviews on this machine are heavily influenced by what the measuring stick is. Such as, how does it stack up to a standard voron? Vs, how does it stack up to a standard voron when taking into consideration the price and time spent to build said voron? Thinking about it from those 2 ways yields 2 very different reviews, as is being seen by all the reviews currently out. Personally, I think the voron purists are missing the mark

    I dont get how a company basing their commercial printer design on a succesful open source project forgets to properly implement half of the details the open source project has already figured out.
    The klipper macros for things like the nozzle probe really arent magic and there are plenty of open source ones out there that they could have just used as is. The inability to go that last step to make a well usable product after investing significant amount of engineering into the hardware and things like injection molds is mind boggling.
