    Hi there! Aspiring food scientist/sensory scientist here. The way that is bottle “works” is by taking advantage of retro nasal olfaction. Basically there’s 2 ways for the compounds for aroma to get into the nasal cavity: the nose and up the back of your throat. I think a lot of people have heard that most of flavor is smell, and that’s completely right, since retronasal olfaction accounts for most of flavor (in addition to taste and nerve sensations). So in fact, you’re mostly just smelling the flavors of these pods, though there is some taste happening.
    Now the problem with this bottle is that the people have different levels of ability to perceive aroma or odor. Some people just lack the receptors for some odors (this is called anosmia). The bigger issue is with the nose. In order to have retronasal olfaction, the nose HAS to be unblocked so that air can flow through. This can change with allergies or illness, and it’s why flavors are harder to taste when your nose is stuffed. The general population also has people who have structural differences like deviated septum. This really decreases your ability to perceive odor.
    Okay so two paragraphs later, what’s my point? My point is everyone perceives aroma and flavor with differing levels of sensitivity. That makes this product difficult to market, and the AirUp company have made really broad claims on how EVERYONE will experience this sensation. Also!!! Aroma and flavor is extremely hard to capture in a pod such as that, and that’s part of the reason why many people experience the “vomit” aroma/flavor. Aroma composition is crazy complex, and by producing such complex flavor pods, the aromas will definitely get muddled and interact in odd ways.
    Thank you for making this video because I’ve been wondering for MONTHS about this company and actual consumer opinions. What you’ve showed us a lack of sensory consumer testing before launching of this product, and it’s been supported by the comments saying it worked for 2/10 who tried it.

    I think it's less of a scam and more of an over-promise issue (except the quality control. That was awful to watch).
    Scents are way more complicated than tastes, and you'll never find a single thing that smells the same to everyone. Even odorless things can sometimes have a scent to some people. To say that everyone will like it is... just not possible. In fact, it's actually bonkers to even assume that's possible, considering how scented candles NEED to market towards specific groups and specific countries.
    There's a reason why the same exact franchise/company (like bath and body works) don't have the same products in stores geographically far from each other. They basically can't, because it's not reasonable for a scent to be the same in a completely different environment with a crap-ton of other factors. They know this, and don't try to constantly over-promise the enjoyment their scents produce, unless it's a line or group of scents. A single product? Yeah, they try to avoid that whenever possible. It's just bad business.

      @noblesseoblige319 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GodhandPlusOne literally the last sentence is "it's just bad business".
      I've put the blame Solely on the company entirely, from the start.
      Never even said anyone was misinterpreting anything. Hell, I didn't even talk about the consumer at all outside people having wildly different reactions to scents (the coldest of takes imaginable).
      All I said was that it was *less* of a scam. Which is pretty true- there are people who enjoy it and who never lied about their enjoyment.
      Its just their crappy marketing and bad business model that tries to overreach past their market in the most asinine way possible.
      I literally don't know what else to call it except over promising. It isn't an outright lie, as some people do in fact like it. So saying "you will like it" to a massive and diverse audience isn't entirely false, but it IS absolutely saying that more people will like it than physically possible (since no one will like everything). Which is a promise they can't fully achieve. Generally called over promising.

    Heya, material engineering stundent here. The fact that the cap leaks water is intentional but it is executed poorly. There's a gap so when you suck water, the bottle lets air in, so you can actually suck the water without having to try and create a vacuum inside the bottle. Now this could be fixed with integrating a pressure valve in the cap but that would increase the already high price... though probably not by much. Still, I'd say it is an oversight in the process of making the bottle usable.
    tl;dr the leaking is intended but an oversight since the fix would be quite easy to implement from the company's end.

      @jousis_ 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +194

      Maybe in order for the "smell pod" to work they needed a bigger hole (larger airflow)?

    • @SvenLaschinski
      @SvenLaschinski 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +198

      I have one of those bottles. The cap is designed in a way that the air gap is pushed down to seal it. So would he actually have turned the bottle right side up, it would have been dry on the inside of the cap. Of course, if it leaks upside down without the cap, it will leak into the cap when the cap is unscrewed while it is upside down. Not to defend the design. Just saying, it works as intended and it does not leak as long as the cap is screwed on fully. Not into the cap, not into your backpack. Is it a good design? Well, probably not so much.
      Oh and btw. it also pushes the pod down when you screw it on. That way it does not leak water into the pod. Which also is something you probably would not want.

    Whenever a TH-camr I like promotes a product and says stuff like "I use this every day" I'm like... "Are you sure? Or did the marketing department tell you to say that so your audience buys the product?"
    On one hand, TH-cam can be absolutely out of their minds with their monetization system and can even demonetize videos for no reason. I wanted to try it. I was surprised at how good it was and when I looked at the ingredients, I was flabbergasted to see it listed only water and "scent" - some flavours do have "extract" in them but many are only scent. I'm not really sure how they do it (the brand I like is "Wilkinson"), but it comes individually packed in plastic water bottles and are far more affordable. You can get the store brand ones for less than a dollar a bottle and those are also pretty good. Bubly Drops contains a lot of propane-1,2-diol or propylene glycol for instance, which is an alkanol, just like alcohol, and therefore may harm the liver and kidneys and reduces the fat metabolism. This is exactly what you want to avoid with Air-Up.

It's a blatant overprice (edit: i purchased a steel bottle from a sports brand called decathlon and paid like 25 euros, less than half of the metal air up product) and hydration formulas already exist and are sold by much more respected beverage companies (biggest example i'd say is twinings tea, which is a quite renowned brand). Thank you for the review. Here is my knowledge and experience:
    - The silicon plastic straw/cap thingy doesn't fit perfectly and leaves a little opening every time indeed, but this has a reason. The slurp you hear is caused by this opening. And what it does is: It ensures that some air enters while you drink and that air comes out through the pod. So it's done on purpose. If you just want to have a bottle, you can take the whole straw and silicon top off and use it as a bottle, then it won't spill any water.
    - I mostly used it with soda water and coke flavor. To be honest I'm impressed. I kinda feel some light coke flavor somewhere. It's not like I'm drinking coca cola, but it 's a bit similar to sodastream + it's pepsi syrup.
    Is it expensive? Yes.
    Is it worth it? Don't think so.
    Was it fun to try? Yes.
    Do I like the (quality of the) bottle? Yes.
    Will I buy new (other) pods when I'm done using these? Probably not.

    I have a vague guess that these pods contain esters. These are compounds made from organic (or inorganic) acids that, depending on how they are changed, smell like certain foods. A lot of the time they smell fruity. Now very commonly esters are created using butanoic acid, creating butyl esters. Thing is, butanoic acid smells like vomit. And a lot of the time if you have made an ester, getting a good nose full of it will still give you that hint of vomit from the butanoic acid. This would explain the water also tasting like vomit, especially to someone who is sensitive to smells, and why most of the available flavours are fruity in some way or another.

    • @chemify
      @chemify 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +120

      I think you are right. The moment I saw their first advertisement I thought that somebody has to debunk their claims. Something like "No chemicals, no sugar, no bullshit". They also claimed, that you just smell it, so it is not harmful, but healthy. I will remember that, the next time I am breathing something like diethylether or worse things in the lab, or benzine at a gasstation. I would guess that their chemical formulations are not proper tested for safety and human health either because it is no food, but only a "parfume" and you are not supposed to eat it. The worst part is the tons of waste their stupid single use containers create. I think this start-up should just be sued to the ground.

      I agree with your analysis that they're made from esters. I can't speak for the US but in the EU pretty much everything has them in them in some capacity. Remember; they do occur naturally in fruits too. I'm very scent sensitive and these work just fine on me, although I haven't tried all the scents mentioned in the video (yet, I have some of them) most of them smells fine albeit artificial to me. We played with butanoic acids in school so I know personally very well what it smells like (and it's not a scent you forget), but for cola, strawberry lemongrass, honeydew melon, and chocolate orange that scent doesn't appear. I have yet to try the other flavours though and these I believe are second gen scents so maybe the first gen scents were just crappy? I will say that honey dew lemon does taste like a chewed out gum when the scent is at the end of it's run.

    I got one of these probably like 3 years ago.
    The way I understand it, the pods smell as strong as they do because the amount of smell you inhale while drinking is deceptively small compared to just smelling the pod directly. They're also mean to last for a fair amount of refills so it'd make sense for the pod itself to smell super agressive in order for the actual scent per swig to be balanced / decent.
    I wasn't blown away by the bottle or the flavors I've had, but I also couldn't deny the legitimacy of the idea behind the bottle. My bottle doesn't leak.
    Now *my* main issue with the product is that it *will* draw air when drinking, even with no pod inserted. So even if you *do not* want to drink scent and remove the pod, you will inhale a water-air mix. If you're prone to burping easily, this bottle will turn you into an absolute monster. Even pushing the pod in, which is supposed to "disable" the scent, will not sufficiently block the airways to prevent this from happening.

So all these little things sum up to make the natural taste when the artifical version is just the raw version that doesn't really compare. It's like just taking CBD and saying it's no different from the actual plant it comes from.

      @@w花bi think u are mixing some stuff up here.
      the thing that clashblaster was talking about, is that if u have a natural and artificial flavour both of these will be the same, bc the molecules have the same structure. he is talking about extracting ONE flavour.
      what u are talking about is that a fruit will be tasting differently, bc it has more complexity. u are not entirley wrong, but the result of the different flavour isnt in a more complex molecule, but rather many different flavour molecules resulting in a mixture of flavours, which we identify as a specific taste.
      as an example vanilla. the main flavour u will find in a vanilla pod will be the vanillin. u can either produce it artificially or extract it "naturally" from a vanilla pod. both vanillin molecules, so the artificial one and the extracted one will be the same, be it taste wise or from the molecular structure.
      but the reason many people say that a vanilla pod tastes better, is bc next to the vanillin there are other flavours. the better taste is not bc the vanillin molecules are different, which many people assume.

      @@w花b I'm taking what they say to mean that "it's the same molecule whether or not it's made from natural sources or synthesised in a lab from scratch". Like for example IIRC fake strawberry flavoring is made from wood shavings, which makes it "natural", but it will still taste just as fake so using a "natural" product as a starting point is just a marketing tactic that won't improve the taste. I don't think anyone is arguing that an extract of the actual product (eg powdered freeze dried strawberries) will taste the same as the artificial/natural replacement. Even for things like vanillin which is the main flavor component of vanilla pods and can be cheaply made, real vanilla pods contain more than just that one chemical and that leads to a more complex flavor profile overall.

    I actually liked my Air Up bottle and it got me drinking a lot more water. Let make some points.
    1. The flavours can be hit or miss, some I like and some were disgusting. They tend to be better after a day of use and not so potent.
    2. A downside is the bottle or the top can gather mould very quickly and you need to clean it regularly and usually comes with a brush you can clean inside the mouth piece.
    3. The marketing and TH-camrs are overreacting with the flavours and saying it’s extremely tasty. The taste is very subtle and they are straight up lying that it’s like drinking the a real fruit juice.
    4. If you going to buy one, do so when they have an offer on or you have discount codes.
    I personally like some of the flavours but not all, it did get me drinking more water and I enjoy the subtle taste.
    They do need to make improvements with the bottles not getting so easily mouldy and if possible, not to leak when tipped over. However, the small hole serves a purpose in letting the scent into your water.

    companies arent required to meet regulations to slap "green" and "Eco friendly" and "recycled product!" on their products. In fact, a lot of companies will take their scrap material and put it back into rotation and call that a recycled product. So, probably, most of these 'recycled' water bottles we see are just non-waste water bottles. This practice is called industrial recycling rather than consumer recycling which is recycling materials that have gone out to the consumer been used and are now being made into something else. The more transparency and information a business shows on HOW they are green or HOW or WHAT is being recycled, the better.

    Here's the thing about this that most people fail to realize: flavour is a Gestalt experience of scent and taste (though it's primarily scent); what you associate as "the fruit" with various fruits, for instance, is the smell characteristic of that fruit, plus the corresponding tastes stemming from sugar content, acidity, bittering compounds etc. It's almost impossible to provide any of the latter via volatile compounds, but you can easily confer the scent, because it's *_all_* volatile compounds, as long as you can isolate them, or at least synthesize some equivalent. Now here's the stumbling block: it can be tough and/or expensive to get those volatile compounds right, so a lot of companies just use cheaper synthetic compounds, and only a few of these, to trick you to some extent; and your mind will always think there's something wrong when you can *_smell_* something, but not taste it, or vice versa. It's why your appetite goes to shit when you have a cold and can't smell your food instead.

It tasted like crap and chemicals, and I felt like I got poisoned with the headache that followed. The worst part though? I had to fight tooth and nail for about 3 weeks for them to give me a refund, and that was also after I sent the bottle back. In the end they didn’t even fully refund me, despite me sending the product back, having used 1 pod from each of the three flavours and having the bottle in my possession for a grand total of about a week. Moral of the story? SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHE (literally) and do not support this ridiculous company.

    I own an airup, but a European one... The packages of the flavors for us look different, well mainly the backside, which gets me wondering if there is perhaps a difference in their approach to the "american" pods. You see, as someone who works in the import/export of genuine food and candy I know north American rules surrounding chemicals and flavors are much more toned down, and thus cheaper options are a common practice. An example would be how Europe has strict rules on Yellow 5 and 6 (E102 and E110), as they are potentially harmful food colorings, however in the US there is no rules prohibiting their use at all and thus this cheap compound is used often. In Europe, however, they replace it with E160 or Beta-Carotene, a much healthier but in fact more expensive to produce coloring derived from carrots. I've got quite a few friends who also enjoy their airup bottle, and the flavors, although a common ground of complain is certainly the unusual profit margins on the pods and bottles. None of us have the issues with plasticy flavors, nor do we have the incredibly poor produced lid! Is it scaling? Is it localization? Did they increase margins even more? I'm curious, because your review is so vastly different than the wide pool of people I've met here...

      I have one too, also in Europe. The most people I know with the airup, including myself, really enjoy it, so I was a little confused by the reactions in the video. I do think that they are a pain in the ass to clean though. I drink way more than the recommended 5L with one pod, as I drink at least 2L a day and I use one pod for a week easily. Even though they get less scent/taste after a few days, I still like it more than just water and it prevents me from drinking lemonade all day.

    Too late! I tried the Air up myself a year ago. The promise of "flavour" for water without having to mix something into the water itself was enticing. The water where I live tastes like garbage, and mixing flavouring into the water makes the inside of a bottle go sticky and nasty after a few months - so keeping it to "just water" and using another system for flavour was enticing to me.
    I tried it for a month and I had about ten of my friends test it. Two of the ten people I tested it with (not me) could actually get a pleasant flavour from the air up, the other eight couldn't really taste anything.
    The bottle itself is fairly okay as a water bottle, it's honestly nice quality for a plastic bottle, and not that much more expensive than other bottles of similar quality. The "leak hole" is so air can get into the bottle, almost all straw bottles have some way for air to get in while you're using the straw.
    I found the large heavy cap frustrating to twist on and off so often, and the seal is so tight that it's honestly awkward to open and re-fill. I switched to a vacuum insulated bottle for my water, a Chinese knockoff of a hydroflask, and it's great. A properly insulated bottle keeps water colder for longer, and it's done much better for me - keeping my tap water ice-cold kills the bad flavour it has.
    I ended up gifting the air-up to someone it worked for.

About the extra hole in the rim of the bottle: it must be there because that's where the air gets in when you drink from the straw. The bottle has to be transported in an upright position, and that's also what they say in the manual.

      Can you just like lit "the oil" and drink from any bottle? I mean as long you can smell it, you'll taste the scent anyway... That how it works right?

      the bottle should have a big lid over this sucking thing, and when you put the lid on it, the leak is sealed and then you can have it in any position in your backpack and its safe

      If I was going to buy a bottle that cannot bee transported upside down, I would just use a cup instead.

    Another smoky thing promoted by creators is VPNs. An average person doesn't normally need one

    I've done a internship at a primary school and so many times kids had to dry their bags because these bottles leaked. This is product is also out for years and they still haven't fixed.

      Got any experience with those OTG bottles from Nalgene?

      @@BrokenCurtain dont have experience with the OTG, but nalgene is a HUGE name, with a reputation for a very very good, nearly no questions asked warranty, (that i havnt tested yet) and the old style HDPE is quite durable from my experience, no leaks unless i STAND on it, and i am a... large man, and after months of use and cycles through the dishwasher, have held up great. hate the ergonomics of the lid, too much effort to unscrew every time you want a sip, even if i do love the no gasket method of sealing that makes it much, much easier to clean.

      That’s so bloody sad that so many kids are buying this overpriced rubbish, because their favourite creators pretended it was nice. This is just lying to children who aren’t at a developmental stage where they can properly question this sort of stuff
      This is all presumption, so please correct me if I’m wrong
