So, the cuecat (#19) was awesome for it's time. It let you quickly read barcodes and get them into a computer for like super cheap. It was super easy to just code it to pull raw data into Acess or Excel (remember folks this was before RSS), you could also run the data (barcodes) through some IRC and forums (depending on what you needed) to actually populate your database/spreadsheet. Was is hugely popular among consumers? No . . . was it a failure? No, I went through 3 of them, and knew lots of other engineering/physics/Comp Sci folks that actually bought as many of them as we could get our hands on. And honestly, they worked better (with custom software) at scanning barcodes than your phones camera does right now.
I remember my grandfather having a CueCat. He already owned a VCR that had a fancy remote with barcode scanner, which allowed him to program his VCR’s auto record function using barcodes in the weekly TV guide he got in the mail. To him, the CueCat seemed like a logical extension to this and he loved new tech. The CueCat concept didn’t work for him though, because (like you said) you had to be near your PC when reading and few magazines and newspapers supported the format because hardly anyone owned a Cue Cat.

The ZTE Hawkeye sounds like a great idea but the problem is that it only goes for specific people. The specs are bad, the consumers ideas were only cool to a select few and other phone types like gaming phones and high specs, cheap and midranges as well as flagships. To do this is just confusing and wouldn't sell as well if it's only for a select few who like this. Not good for sales. If they want to do this they should've used better hardware and come up with better ideas.
I have a gaming phone. Don't actually use it for that purpose, only have one game on it (Asphalt). Got it because of the specs and price, and also because it has a headphone jack, which is a rarity for a phone made in 2021.
I wouldn’t consider one coin a fail. Because that was the intention from the start. For it to be a massive scam. I think you should make a separate set of videos for the biggest scams as apposed to putting scams in fail videos
Thank you for another great list! I do have to disagree with you on Skype, though. Microsoft didn't buy Skype to compete with Zoom, they bought it for Teams. The fact that it had a consumer following was nice, but for everyone who uses Zoom for external calls, I bet you they're making 10x as many calls on Teams, and if Microsoft didn't have a solid video conferencing solution, Teams would have crashed and burned. So it's annoying that they didn't keep up with the consumer side, but that wasn't really the main point.
Exactly and they had it as a im and meeting program before teams was released in fact my company still used Skype in the office up until 2018 and then I think Microsoft kind of pushed everyone to teams
After the first 5 puns I was like, well this is gonna get old. The Skype vs Zoom one was interesting. Having been in the communications industry for almost 20 years, Skype has evolved to the point now where it forms the video aspect of Microsoft Teams - a product that outsells Zoom in both the Public and Private Sectors globally.
@@jpxyUA the premium video calling features of Teams isn’t included as standard, it requires an additional license….so no Also, I’m coming at this from purely a commercial, not a consumer side of things, so very, very different landscape
@@RichMidGaming Thx for the explanation, though I highly doubt Microsoft will differentiate between "premium" and standard users when gloating their user numbers online.
Yeah this one felt wierd to me. I live in Denmark and study here, Microsoft with their product range is just miles ahead of anything we can get, and if you've used Skype before you'd recognise that portion in teams. Which feels just so much more like a professional program than zoom.
As a windows 10 user I can safely say I never specifically went out of my way to look for and download teams, it just appeared on my computer one day and I immediately uninstalled it because I never asked for it, now I'm going out of my way to use zoom since microsoft forced teams onto me.
I wouldn't say skype was a COMPLETE failure. They mostly shifted its technology into "Skype for Business" which went on to become Microsoft Teams, which is pretty much the professional standard now for companies using O365.
Yea , but they had everything ! They could have continued their dominance in public eye , but nope they bloated the fack out of it ... I remember every time I started windows to exit skype and at one point closing it from task manager because how difficult Microsoft made it to close skype .
Tbh I'm still using Skype to talk with relatives. They only know that, we started using it in 2016 as it was the best at the time and shifting now it's not easy. Tried using WhatsApp videocalls but while quality has improved there, it's not at the same level yet.
Yeah by the time of the pandemic Skype was already at its planned end of life, and Teams was the go forward app. It is hard to call something a failure when it did exactly what they wanted.
How old are you, 20? For someone who hasn't lived more than 30-40 years Everything sounds "fun", "interesting", "entertaining" and "engaging". Grow up.
Only thing I think you missed a bit on was Skype. Microsoft certainly didn’t soar with it directly, but they essentially bought it to jump start what is now Teams and Teams is really the primary meeting and communication app next to email in the corporate world. Zoom came and went with the pandemic, with some circles still over there, but Teams is here to stay for business. It wasn’t quite ready yet in early 2020, but it’s ubiquitous now and anchors the office 355 user base.
It exists, but in the background. The best time to grow and capitalize the online video conference market was unfortunately the pandemic. And while Teams still exists, and Zoom is almost gone, Teams still missed the biggest payday of our lives.
@@stansman5461 I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. Teams is very much in the foreground of businesses using Microsoft 365 products. Not "all" businesses use 365 products of course, but around 20 Billion in revenue last I saw is a big chuck, and every one of those companies gets Teams for free and a large portion of them use it for at least business chat and video if not also external collaboration. If you mean to say that the public market of consumers doesn't see Teams much, that is true, but that's not, nor was it ever, the target for Teams. Teams wasn't ever trying to capitalize on the public consumer video conference market, they were trying to become the de-facto standard for business collaboration and they've pretty much done that for everyone using 365. And to be clear, I'm not saying nobody in business uses Zoom or others, because many certainly do, but the market share of Teams is unmistakable in the business world.
Yeah. In Buisness, Teams replaces Skype for buisness, taking over the entire VoIP Plattform for big and small companies, while also used for online meetings by many others. Teams also replacing slack and other plattforms, bulldozing into the buisness market thanks to 365 integration. Zoom is dead behind and forgotten in 2023.
I'm a bit of an outlier with my business, industry secrets and my general distrust against big tech. I decided to use a self-hosted solution, which doesn't require an account, application or anything for our customers. They just receive a throwaway weblink. But the system has it's limits. It doesn't work well on mobile and only works with small businesses.
Skype was a huuuuuge fail. I remember using it for instant messaging in high school and remembering the day that I updated it on my iPod Touch, I was in the gym for an assembly. I opened it after updating and thought "yeah, it's time to look for an alternative, I hate what they've done with this" The first thing I remember hating about the changes was moving to cloud storage instead of local storage. I believe before that it was basically device to device, so if you logged in on a new device, your messages would be retrieved from another one? Or you'd at least have a local database on that device. Since then it's just gotten worse and worse.

Fun fact: there was also a Power Glove for the N64 that had all the buttons at your fingertips (literally) and the joystick would be controlled with movement of the wrist. The only problem was that it would take a minute or two to adjust to moving the game with your wrist and would hurt your wrist from long usage. This just proves that no matter what the product is, companies never learn from their mistakes.
I had the glove for the N64. I wanted it to work so badly. I thought the concept was awesome. But it wasn't good, sometimes it didn't register the movements of the hand correctly, sometimes you had to reset and recalibrate the glove during the game and as he said in the video: holding up your arm for a long period of time is just tiring.
Similar to the facetime bug, you have the intentional feature in Amazon Echo Shows where you could "drop in" on somebody else's Show, and the call would be automatically picked up after a few minutes. This was quickly removed but still a huge potential issue

To me skype was more like used for calling people instead of calling on phone. Zoom is in different place, i used it because remote teaching was on zoom. Discord is what took the place of skype for me but it also does more.
The thing about Mixer is that not only did Microsoft try to buy their audience, they also bought Mixer. It was originally called Beam, which was built to allow for better interactivity between streamers and users, including easily enabling "twitch plays" type streams. It was a cool concept, I wonder how much potential it would have had if Microsoft never touched it.
Or if Microsoft actually allowed it to grow instead of trying to artificially inflating it. I think beam/mixer would of easily had a chance to do more if it was alive today because people are really getting sick of twitch.
The cue cat was actually useful if you could find companies that supported it, I got one from a gadget guru friend and used it a bunch as gaming companies were all in too. For what I used it for it was actually pretty awesome

My first thought as a left-handed person seeing the Nintendo Powerglove would be: Goody, no left-handed powergloves? Yeah, I'll pass, no thanks. And as as a left-handed person with arthritis, the idea of having to wave my entire arm around.... well okay, it might be better than a controller that I can't properly hold and use either. I'll just stick to keyboard and mouse.
An additional detail on skype: almost every time skype got an update one of the core features that made it the leader seemed to get just marginally worse.
Skype didn't really die, and they didn't become complacent. Microsoft got so far ahead in development with Skype that they felt it wasn't the same app anymore. So they redesigned the UI and renamed it Teams. Because if its tight integration with Microsoft's other product, Teams became more business focused and is now the preferred communication app for businesses around the world. Why use give apps for email, instant messaging and calls, when you could use one seamlessly integrated office package?
The Lazer razor was only capable of cutting a couple of hairs at a time, meaning a 10 minute shave would take about 5 hours. Personally I like my double edge razor blade, never got on with multi blade razors and the Philips one blade leaves you with quite a bit of stubble. A safety razor doesn't cause any irritation, just takes a bit of practice to get used to it.
very late to see this, but i got another one for you. Around the 1970s, during the boom of the Atari 2600, eventually the company Datasoft created what is argued to be the first ever motion activated controller they called "Le Stick" .the stick barely was on shelves and still were somewhat successful, except for one problem, and that's HOW the system worked. See, since it was the 70s, they didn't have access to Bluetooth or Infrared for something like Atari, so the option they had to get the gyro controls to work, is with a MERCURY SWITCH. A switch activation system that used liquid mercury in order to activate the gyro controls. if it aint obvious, Mercury is a very TOXIC and fatality inducing chemical, so if a child in the 70s managed to game rage and smash the controller, than they would have a very toxic chemical either already on themselves or their surroundings.
@@DevinAswani Huh, neat. Good riddance tbh, now we got Discord for gaming and Teams for work and school. Imo Teams fits in well with other work/school oriented Microsoft products. It's a complete package, covering everything you might need.

Very surprised by your inclusion of the Power Glove on this list, for a number of reasons. For one, the Power Glove wasn't created or produced by Nintendo -- simply licensed by them. In the U.S., it was produced by Mattel. Additionally, even if it WERE produced by Nintendo, it would be FAR from Nintendo's biggest tech failure. For that, you need look no farther than the Virtual Boy, their short-lived mid-'90s 32-bit "portable" system. Originally meant to be a helmet you could wear, it wound up being too heavy, so it was sold as "glasses on a stick" that you have to set on a table and awkwardly hold your face up to in order to play. The display was red and black ONLY, and was known for giving anyone who played it tremendous headaches, and really disorienting them. There was also no 3D technology included, meaning the "virtual" part of the name was a complete lie -- the games on Virtual Boy weren't much different than the sorts of things you'd see on the Super Nintendo, you just had to play them in red and black while holding your head up to a pair of glasses on a stick. It was a total flop all around, and was without question Nintendo's biggest tech fail of all time. The Power Glove doesn't even come close to comparing, because for as underwhelming an accessory as that was, it still sold reasonably well, did most of the things it claimed to do, and gained a cult following that continues to this day, with certain Japanese pop stars wearing Power Gloves in concert and internet gaming reviewers delighting in making full use of the thing whenever possible.
The power glove was actuallly a very good idea, the problem was that it was not meant to be a toy. The technology was meant to be used by industries and it worked very good, but it was too costly to be selled as a toy, so mattel downgraded it and it became very bad at doing what it was supposed to do. Games were not designed to work with that type of controller so it was harder to play.
I came here to add the bit about the glove being by Mattel... I got to play on a Virtual Boy once as a kid, gave me the worst headache I had ever had. Easily the worst flop by Nintendo
6:34 Nintendo didn't make the Power Glove it's a third-party accessory meaning they weren't involved in the development nor the release of this controller

I think you should make a separate set of videos for the biggest scams as apposed to putting scams in fail videos
yeah one coin achieved what its made out to do, which is to scam millions of people and make a profit. so yeah technically it was a success
One coin was such a success that the "inventor" had to escape the hoard of followers.

True most businesses use Teams to meet rather than zoom.

Arun stifling a laugh when he was explaining how the Magnetos work is the reason why I keep coming back to this video
The Skype vs Zoom one was interesting. Having been in the communications industry for almost 20 years, Skype has evolved to the point now where it forms the video aspect of Microsoft Teams - a product that outsells Zoom in both the Public and Private Sectors globally.
And by "outsells'' you mean is forced into every Windows 10 and 11 machine on the planet.
@@jpxyUA the premium video calling features of Teams isn’t included as standard, it requires an additional license….so no
Also, I’m coming at this from purely a commercial, not a consumer side of things, so very, very different landscape
They mostly shifted its technology into "Skype for Business" which went on to become Microsoft Teams, which is pretty much the professional standard now for companies using O365.
was kinda mad he missed that
Yea , but they had everything !
Yeah but the consumer version of it got worse and worse which annoyed a lot of its former users.
I absolutely love this series. Arun's way of presenting it makes it more interesting and engaging

@@stansman5461Teams are paid by business to be incorporated into company IT system. It’s not targeting the individual customers.
I opened it after updating and thought "yeah, it's time to look for an alternative, I hate what they've done with this"
The first thing I remember hating about the changes was moving to cloud storage instead of local storage. I believe before that it was basically device to device, so if you logged in on a new device, your messages would be retrieved from another one? Or you'd at least have a local database on that device. Since then it's just gotten worse and worse.
It's been downhill since MSN closed down
My friend uses Skype to text there mom and dad.

Because if its tight integration with Microsoft's other product, Teams became more business focused and is now the preferred communication app for businesses around the world.
Why use give apps for email, instant messaging and calls, when you could use one seamlessly integrated office package?

The fast Yikyak could’ve saved itself by just making you need an account.
Virtual boy is in an earlier video of the series
Virtual boy is not that big of a failure to be included in any list!
@@yaroslavpanych2067 It's a much bigger failure than Power Glove, though! It was such a flop that major figures quit Nintendo over it.
I came here to add the bit about the glove being by Mattel... I got to play on a Virtual Boy once as a kid, gave me the worst headache I had ever had. Easily the worst flop by Nintendo
He deserves 10 mill for all his effort, time and genuine love
6:34 Nintendo didn't make the Power Glove
it's a third-party accessory meaning they weren't involved in the development nor the release of this controller
