- Chopped is one of the longest-running cooking competition shows on TV, with a run dating back to 2009. It's no surprise it has such longevity. It's always entertaining to watch a professional chef try to make something delicious out of a basket of random and often strange ingredients, with a 30-minute time limit to boot.
Chopped is an intense environment, given the time crunch, the competition with the other chefs and the promise of $10,000 for the winner. So, of course, there's bound to be the occasional confrontation or mishap in the kitchen. Sometimes it gets very weird. Here are the most awkward moments we all witnessed on Chopped.

I think the most awkward moment from you video is at 4:16 when you don't make it apparent who the disgruntled and defensive chef was. What's the reason for not making the distinction. You know, like you do with every other clip.

The majority of the Judges are so self important that the think they are world changing scientists just because "they know food"

Hmm but isn't that real world experience? As a chef you're gonna have people that don't like something, or are allergic to something and you must make it without that ingredient. That's really a part of their job. So when a judge who eats most anything notifies you on your first dish be is not fond of raw onions, it would be wise to hear that and not use that again. It's almost arrogant to do otherwise. It's definitely stupid. Well if you want to win that is.
Well, there's a difference between not liking something and being allergic to it. No one would expect a judge to eat something to which they're allergic. On the other hand, if it's a customer, then you cater to their likes and food preferences cause they're paying and that's your job.

"I don't like onion." Well you're in the wrong business then. With the exception of salt, pepper and some sort of cooking fat ie: butter, oil etc.... Onions are probably the most used ingredient in a kitchen.
Exactly. I'm questioning his credentials now lol. Onions are found in everything from mirepoix to soffrito, so how can you be on a cooking competition based on random ingredients and be nitpicky? His personal preference has nothing to do with whether or not the dish is good- and that's all he's there to judge on🙃💀
Agree with your comment, but not only is it one of the most used ingredients in the kitchen, but it also imparts lots of flavor to food and is extremely healthy for the body. If you don't like onions, then learn to like them or don't judge savory food. Judge desserts.
Not to defend him he's being rediculous but in the episode he does say that he doesn't like raw onions and as someone who loves onion on stuff raw or cooked I can understand where he's coming from raw onion can be very over powering especially red onion but the way the chef cut the onion so thin I think he just felt like being a Dick about it

They act like dicks just because. Because if you watch any of these shows when the judges compete against each other they're never anywhere close to being as critical to each other.
Not everyone likes everything. If a customer orders something and wants the chef to leave something they don't like out, they should do it.

well yeah, but even then he still went on to use it in the 2nd round even after he was told that the judges didnt like it.
@@glennquagmire34 many dishes contain a type of onion, if he doesn't like it, then maybe he shouldn't be a food judge or he needs to get over it. Food is judged on taste and appearance, not on whether the judge himself likes or dislikes what was used on it, it's childish in my opinion.

I actually love eel. It is just expensive.
eel sashimi is a thing it's all just cooked. while most sushi fish are raw there are some that are served cooked like eel and shrimp. most eel at sushi restaurants is precooked/marinated and reheated in a toaster or on a grill.
That is why Eel never should've been put into the basket, or ask the contestants if they're familiar with eel and how it's served. I wonder which idiot put it in the basket. They wouldn't put Fugu in the basket and then expect the contestant to serve it, not unless the chefs had a death wish.
I got food poisoning from an eel dish once when I was around 9 or 10. I just threw up a shit ton at a sleepover and went home. I stay away from eel now.
I’m honestly shocked Scott really threw a small fit about raw onions, If he doesn’t like the taste, fine, but to limit another chefs abilities because he is being picky shouldn’t be allowed on chopped. Plus, I’m sure the other judge/s don’t mind raw onions so really his preferences shouldn’t matter when it comes to judging another chefs creative and technical talent. These chefs have very limited time to come up with a dish within seconds to execute it. Can you imagine an Art Critic looking over someone’s Artwork because they don’t like a certain color? Ridiculous.

I believe she does that all time, expecting other people will come and clean it for her. Cause if your habit is to throw food scraps into the bin, I believe competition or no competition, you will always do that out of habit.

Being a chef and not liking certain food items is odd, especially being a judge as well. It’s literal kiddie to give someone low scores bcs YOU don’t like the certain item used
People do the strangest things out of desperation. I had a young pastry chef do an internship in my bake shop, then later admitted to me that she was vegan and only ate gluten-free products so could not taste any of the baked goods she was asked to make. Ho hum!!

That von der Pool chick was SERIOUSLY unhinged. That’s an episode that stuck with me because of her. She was enraged by her female opponent who was a very sweet, unassuming woman. Chef von der Pool was scary. That’s the bitch that shanks you for no damn reason.
yeah she's not wrapped too tightly, I remember the first time I saw that episode I was like "damn, what is her problem" and then any other time I saw something with her on it, I'd turn it cause I didn't like her attitude, she's so nasty

If you don't like a particular type of food, you should still be able acknowledge that the food is good. Personally disliking an ingredient doesn't mean it's not a cohesive part of a meal.
Judges on chopped are horrible….. ever since Simon cowell came out w his rudeness all judges in every show starting being rude too… these judges are nobody’s trying to make the show about themselves

I don’t think food competitions should be judged by a judges’ personal likes and dislikes. There are so many beautiful Mediterranean salads and dishes with raw red onion for example. One man’s opinion shouldn’t be held against technique, execution, and overall flavor combinations.

It's about the contestants NOT listening to the chefs/ jury members that's the problem, the chef told him something and the guy blatantly ignored him !
Honestly, not liking a certain food shouldn't send someone go. Don't be a judge if you don't like food that is available to the contestant to use. It can still be a very good dish even if you're a picky eater.
The MC talked way too much and didn't let the contestants and judges speak for themselves.
If you do not like a particular type of food, that invalidates you as a food judge.

The onion guy got chopped because he just threw raw onion on the plate twice without blanching or pickling. that’s fine for home chefs, but not when people are paying for your food. All the judges called him on that, he did it twice in a row, and that’s why he got chopped.

One plate is for display purposes. When they reveal which contestant got chopped, they unveil a plate from that particular contestant.

I Stopped a third of the way through because of a judge that made me stopped making me watch this show 10 or so years ago. The guy hates pepper for fuck sake. He probably spends his life wearing diapers because life is tough sometimes.

Don’t be fooled. Every reality show must have some controversy or it would be boring. Were they paid to act that way? 100%!
In season 3 episode 4, Chef Malik should have never been on the show since he has never liked his food being critized at all and the way that he handled it at the end of the first 2 rounds before he was sent home was extremely immature and horrible. And as far as the judge who does not like raw onions, I just watched that episode where that situation with red onions took place and that chef that did that move in the entree round pretty much did that on purpose. Red onions are pretty strong in flavor and if the chef is not careful with those onions, they can very easily dominate the flavor profile of the food on the plate and they can help prevent any judge from tasting anything else on that plate too. There is nothing wrong with what judge Chef Scott did in that episode for he was trying to convey to that particular chef that had used those red onions twice that not only did he needed to be careful with those particular onions, but that competeting chef need to be more creative with the flavor profile of his dishes.
