The Marcel attack to me was an assault. He could have easily filed criminal complaint that he was assaulted and it was filmed. Nobody has no right to touch another person and what Cliff did to Marcel was considered an assault. It was violent and criminal. If this was a woman yeah we’re talking big time lawsuit.
This kind of argument really irks me. There is no doubt in my mind that Marcel provoked the incident. He's that kind of guy; difficult to get along with, condescending, and argumentative. He shouldn't be able to hide behind the law when he's a total ass.
+Hugo^: really? So a 220 pound muscle guy was provoked by someone who is maybe 150 pounds. You have issues if you actually believe that. When you violently pin someone down in a headlock trying to shave their head. If you actually believe your statement you’re fucked up.

'the union workers hissed at her' That made me literally laugh out loud imagining some burly dudes hissing like a cat at people entering the filming area.
The pea puree' scandal was manufactured. On that seasons's reunion show two other chefs said they saw him making his own puree. The producers chose not to show that footage to make the guy look like a thief.
MTV got lambasted for the same thing. One season a guy pulled a blanket off of a woman who was only wearing underwear. She laughed and then later claimed she felt like she was raped. They kicked the guy off the show. Yet earlier that very same season .This woman and one other pulled the blanket off a man passed out drunk so they could take a picture of him. Nothing happened.
They totally skipped over Heather Terhune and Sarah Grueneberg bullying Beverly. It was criminal what they did to Beverly and they should have been called out on it.
I was telling my husband the whole time watching this season. They call beverly meek and weak and she asks questions like a sous chef- no she’s just trying to be civil and let you know what she’s doing and asking your opinions so she’s not taking over the dish during team challenges. She also refused to apologize saying what she said was truthfully at that time.
I loved Marcel. I'm glad they send someone home over the 'hair' thing, but they should have sent everyone home who participated. Marcel should have been the winner by default.
Instead that ass ilan won . I loathed him from the beginning as i could see his spite and malice , stemming from jealousy . Wonder what the judges were thinking when they took that stupid decision
They had to do it that way or else the season would have to had been shorter - reducing the amount of money they would have brought in. They don’t care about about what is fair - just how they could make as much money as possible
I didn't take the last point as the scandal being that they hired someone with performance difficulties, but that they switched her out? So the list was kind of on her side?
Judge Tom is great. Those people in season 2 were all bullies it was like the Stanford project. Its like they had no idea how bad they looked trashing Marcel.
It honestly made me feel bad for marcel. Watching the whole season made me realize he was just socially awkward. He really seemed like a nice guy and he even helped other chefs when preparing meals. Seriously though.. that was the most cringe worthy behavior from “adult women”. They picked on Beverly constantly. Seemed like middle school bullying to me. Yes, they should’ve been called out. Sarah also telling Emeril to “F*ck off” was disgusting as well.
@@itgetter9 Definitely! I’m watching this season right now, I can’t believe how horribly they treated her. It’s vile. If I ever rewatch this show I’ll be skipping this season. The amount of times Heather complained about Beverly cooking Asian food & how often her ideas were shot down was very upsetting to watch. And I can’t believe they questioned her work ethic when she always put her head down, asked questions as needed & turned it out in the end - despite being yelled at. Surviving an abusive relationship and then having other people in your life try to bully you is just awful, I really hope Beverly is happy and doing well. She deserves good things!
I thought for sure the first scandal would be from episode one when one of the chefs got kicked off for tasting a sauce with his finger - something for which ALL of the chefs were horrified by. Yet, we’ve watched over a dozen years of additional Top Chef episodes where ALL the chefs touch the food with their bare hands.
Agreed and this is my first time hearing that Tom was furious and wanted to kick them all off the show. I wish he had. I couldn't stand Ilan and Elia; Marcel should have won that season! He was so robbed.

Probably she doesnt want to loose a paycheck. Some people refuse to get a divorce even if the relationship is dead and gone. I don't see how having some one on a show who later does something scandalous is a scandal for the show. With Isabella, Besh, Qui, McInnis, and Booth, I'm not sure what the studio should have done to avoid them
I don't know. 1. I have just finish watching Season 2 and Marcel isn't as bad as I remember. Yes he is a smug... But hey he also was an amazing chef. Also everyone was like all he does is foams but that was his style of cooking and Ilan (the winner of the season) also just cook spanish food, so the same flavor just slightly different presentations ...
I wouldn't be surprised if she made that up. They did an even in KY at my family's marina and she was insanely rude. She even had her "people" not to speak to her unless spoken to.
Top Chef is not a government agency so it's not "pay to play." Charging cities for tourism advertising is perfectly legal. Cities pay to advertise for tourism.
@@pandapunk1993 right, so they keep all of their tips, you don't pool them, don't split them, don't take a cut, they keep 100% of the tips they receive
When I did the Gig what I was tipped my mine. If a SA went above I kicked him some. It was a place where you could walk with a grand a night if you were good. Now I ask if it's tip share. If so I tip on the card & drop cash for the server & never lower than 20%. Most don't know that the kitchen is backed up & the server has no control over that.
It is complicated because servers have to tip out bus boys, bartenders, runners, hosts and so many of them lie about how much cash tips they received so they pay less taxes. It can be hard for managers to know how much they actually were taking home each night. Also their claim of not being paid for the time it took to change into their uniforms is ridiculous. I have never had a job in any industry where you clock in and then get dressed for work.
When I was in college, I took a summer job waitressing in a little restaurant. The fat, ugly and lazy lady boss made me hand over half of each tip I made. She'd sit in the corner of the restaurant and eat the whole time. She looked just like Jabba the Hut. I was so glad to see she went bankrupt. Haw haw...
I worked in an Italian restaurant and the owner would regularly steal tips from the staff and give BS excuses. A guy I knew who worked in a restaurant said the same thing happens at his workplace. Apparently it’s not unusual in the restaurant business.
I totally agree. I enjoyed the first several seasons but then suddenly it was like the show turned into a combination of Survivor and Fear Factor. I want to see what a contestant can produce cooking - not how well he can cook at 3am in a building that just caught fire using only 4 ingredients.

Something people often gloss over when it comes to the Marcel assault: Bravo edited the events to make it seem like Elia and Ilan shaved their heads, then tried to involve Marcel in the "fun." In reality, it was the other way around -- they tried to shave his head, then ended up shaving their own heads afterwards. This was discovered when fans caught a glimpse of Elia with a full head of hair in the footage of Cliff attacking Marcel. Bravo then doubled down and re-edited the episode to remove the shot of Elia instead of sequencing the events in the correct order.

Last the video is dated 2019 yet there is no mention of Anthony Bourdain who was had a fairly big role on the and besides his Suicide he alone could have a 4 part video of "scandals" and i know of bigger "scandals" or story's that happened. The amount of satisfaction I take from Mike Isabella's downfall probably doesn't speak well of my character. But to have it confirmed that he's the pig I suspected he was from the beginning of his Top Chef career is validating, and I'm wallowing in schadenfreude.
How was it confirmed? By him paying the accusers instead of going through a years-long witch hunt? He wasn't judged guilty, so you don't know if the accusations are true.
Well it depends on how you see it, if you are religious then there are some wich prohibit it. If you're not following any specific diet then the stigma of where you grew up probably.
Scandal makes for good reality tv, which is one reason TC continues to thrive. TC is probably the best American cooking contest, but Great British Bake Off and Masterchef Australia are better.
There's literally no way top chef didn't know about Besh, it was an open "secret" in the industry for years before the allegations went public. They just didn't care until it made them look like creeps by association.
Full kitchen combat. I’ve been there. Sharp objects, 🔥, hot grease- what could go wrong?? I forgot big egos. I’m very thankful I’m out of the culinary business.
Since the culinary renaissance began, the public at large has developed a terribly inaccurate image of those who work in the culinary world thanks to reality television programs that create a rather sanitized image of those who work in the food industry. There are few establishments in the food industry that care if someone has a criminal record. Even an convict can be a talented chef. There are few other professions that would ever allow such a thing. The culinary world has one of the highest drug and alcohol abuse rates of any profession as well as one of the highest divorce rates. Its high stress, high tension, high energy and after a while, that takes its toll on people, often negatively. So, we really shouldn't be all that surprised when a celebrity chef implodes. Remember folks, the world outside your door is a vastly different world than what's on your television or computer screen.
One of my instructors in culinary school was even talking about how a lot of chefs are drug users and alcoholics due to his stress. I have heard it over and over about failing marriages, drug and alcohol abuse etc. Ive only worked in the kitchen on campus for school but it can be pretty chaotic while on the line part of station rotations and youre only serving the students, not a high end restaurant. Having to prep in the middle of a service was shit also because we under estimated how much we needed or it was a busier than usual day. It was fun though but i dont know if i could make a career of it. I am a bit old to start in the game at 36 and have a 4 year old. The instructor even said its a young persons game and could be awesome if youre single and no commitmentd
@@Mixwell1983 Your instructor is right. This is most definitely a young person's game. I have been giving young, wide eyed kids the same advice for 40 years; if you can do anything else, do anything else. This is not the career path for a person who has a family or children because you will be working during the dance recitals, sports games, birthdays, holidays, weekends and much more. A 60 hour work week is short. An 18 hour day normal. Good luck. :-)
They do in some states. Depends on state laws regarding this type of work. The state of Oregon requires that everyone gets paid the state minimum wage plus whatever tips. Servers there have no issue with tip sharing with the kitchen. However, in a state like Illinois where their laws allow employers to average tips into the minimum wage but still ask servers to share tips, that's just fkd! I did it anyways and still made over 1000 a week. Part of it is because of the tips as wage situation, you work harder for those tips and give amazing service. Everyone I served from out of state or other countries commented on the quality of service in Chicago.
Would have been MUCH longer if they'd included the scandals from contestants involved in Top Chef Just Desserts. One of those guys was busted for kiddie porn and another embarrassed himself so bad he had to change his name. And then one woman was injured by production's incompetence. She had a bandage on her head for the whole time she was on the show and the EW recapper used to call her "Head Wound Heather" and note that she usually seemed out of it. Turns out some camera man or sound operator dropped heavy equipment on her head the very first day of filming, and they threatened her that if she told anyone how she was injured they'd kick her off the show.
Season 16 is quite wonderful, but Graham Elliot's ignorance is pretty shocking though, despite having a restaurant in Macau, he had no clue that it hasn't been ruled by Portugal since 1999.
You can't just say it about someone. They have to admit it or have them tested to prove it. If their Dr has them on medication that is causing them to act different and they aren't drunk then you have a big problem. That is how N.Y. labor laws are anyway.
I Eat Plastic, then that’s not harassment by “showing up to work drunk”. They would be harassing someone by being a jerk to them. Not by showing up to work drunk.
Her lawsuit was for sexual harrasment AND unsafe working conditions. Considering the person will be working around knives.... Fire.... boiling water... Blazing ovens....etc. Having a drunk manning the kitchen is DEFINITELY a safety issue. I watched a drunk chef stumble right into the deep fryer. His entire forearm got submerged. He suffered the most horrific burns I have ever seen. He was fired and did not qualify for workmens comp because he was under the influence at the time of the incident.
The teamsters operate like the fucking mafia. Its a joke. All people deserve to work and they shouldn't have to pay dues to your organization to do it, you submit a proposal and you win or lose it, period.
We can also add on them canceling the after season episodes after chef tom threw a hissy fit that lesser chefs questioned why he wouldn't endorse grass fed beef. (Which he now does after stating then that you can't run a steakhouse on it)
That explained a lot. I’m sure there’s a lot more to be explained about Alton Brown and “the Chairman” on “Iron Chef America.” That’s enough of real fake reality cooking for one day.
A lot of these scandals are only tangentially related to the show. It seems a bit slanderous to impugn the character of Top Chef based on what a contestant did after leaving the show.

My top scandal for this show was when they had a challenge at the Plantation and the only black guy was sent home and his dish was'nt even the worst TBh.
12:29 Katie Lee felt guilty sending chefs home because she is HUMAN or at least was acting like it. I can't say the same for most of the people in the entertainment industry.
Tom Collichio and Top Chef have severely diminished as a cooking competition for me. You mean in 16 seasons there is only ONE black top chef? I was really disgusted with this fact during season 11 when they had the talented, Nina Compton, on the show. Nina was crushing it through the entire competition. Tom in the finale pushed for this chef Nicholas to win whose food the judges were complaining about constantly for being under seasoned. In fact that was the complaint during the finale. Plus Nicholas was a total tool in a previous episode where he surprisingly cooked well enough to get immunity and he also behaved poorly in the kitchen during the finale. However, Tom pushed hard for Nicholas and he became Top Chef for season 11. Tom got major push back after that decision. Nina Compton has gone on to win a James Beard award for her cooking. Tom stands at the gate on Top Chef, and keeps anointing the same type of chefs usually white males with a sprinkling of women and Asian chefs. There have been so many black talented chefs who have passed through that competition, who if they make ONE mistake have to pack their knives and go. Yet chefs like Hosea, Jeremy, Nicholas, and others have cooking armor. I barely watch the show anymore. Top Chef should pack its knives and go.
Agree 100 percent. They said over and over how his food was not that good compared to Nina. Yet he keep getting the nod from Tom. Kind of reminds me of how Padma kept Josie on when she came back the second time, Like wtf send her ass home. She kept messing up dishes, bringing down her team, and was just rude to everyone. Yet it always came to a vote and Padma saying she should stay. When she loss I was laughing. They need to clean house and get rid of all of the current crew. Start fresh and make it all about new chefs only. Do another one off all star season separate from the main show and be done with them. Tired of seeing people from 10 years ago. Move on
Same happened in the most recent season. They sent Kelsey and Sara to finale instead of Eric. There hasn't been an honest win on Top Chef since about season 3. The rest have been producer driven (even though some of those choices deserved to win, ie Stephanie Izard, Michael Voltaggio, Kristin Kish) I don't even bother to watch the finales any more if I stick around that long.
@@GaelinWSeason 14 was a huge slap in the face. Tom wanted Brooke to win so bad in her original season. So many times she dropped the ball and should have been sent home and yet they kept her around. Then they bring her back and she does the same thing. Only this time they keep her around enough to "win". Talk about a hand picked winner. Can not stand her or her weird owl looking husband. He acts like she has his balls in a jar on the desk. LOL
Ricky Cunningham YES!!! I think that entire veterans vs. rookies season was to give Brooke the win. Brooke’s whole demeanor was like she got robbed somehow when she was just out-cooked by Kirsten. Also season 12 had this really transparent judging system where Tom couldn’t pull his usual manipulative tricks. Season 14 Sheldon, Shirley, and Selver are superior cooks to Brooke. Those chefs excelled whether the challenge required a sophisticated cheffy dish or rustic Southern cooking. Brooke failed every time she was required to make simple good tasting food. I remember during her season she couldn’t even fry chicken. However, she had the Tom chef armor. Although Brooke was voted off, I feel he voted off Selver and made sure he didn’t win his bogus Last Chance Kitchen. That cleared a path for Brooke to be in the finale. I recently watched season 14 again and one of the judges during the finale said about Shirley, “That girl can cook!”. No one has ever made an exclamation like that over Brooke’s cooking. I can’t stand Brooke either.
I've never understood the objections to horse meat, as if horse are somehow sacrsanct while cows apparently deserve to be slaughtered. It makes absolutely no sense.

"winner by default" lol no
Marcel should have won anyway.
Good video up until the last point. Anxiety and hyper-empathy isn't a scandal. Don't contribute to the stigma.

Right, like they're punishing her because she has a heart not to crush other people's dreams, like tf....
Nitewulf in the television hosting profession it is though.
djanime317 she couldn’t do the job so they replaced her, that’s not being punished.
But people like ilan and petty looked like monsters in my eyes. Especially that fake attitude that they try to mask their true faces with

Hey, how are things with you today?
How bullies like Sarah and Heather don’t get called out for their level of BS was beyond me.
To this day, that is still the worst thing I ever saw on Top Chef. How the producers allowed that was a disgrace.
Seriously though.. that was the most cringe worthy behavior from “adult women”. They picked on Beverly constantly. Seemed like middle school bullying to me. Yes, they should’ve been called out. Sarah also telling Emeril to “F*ck off” was disgusting as well.
Seriously! I couldn't stand watching that -- maybe they were that way with everyone, but to me, they seemed racist AF.
I agree

“He pressured her into a divorce.” So he asked for a divorce? Maybe I’m just not understanding this, but isn’t that how it works?
Not quite, if you asked your partner for a divorce, but they refuse, then it's a no-go. It's why they have "separated" under relationship status.
@Bau and be stuck with the bill..
Probably she doesnt want to loose a paycheck. Some people refuse to get a divorce even if the relationship is dead and gone. But its pathetic to hust keep talking shit about your ex who doesnt want you anymore and in the end he still end up successful and married with his new beau and have his own family. Also everyone was like all he does is foams but that was his style of cooking and Ilan (the winner of the season) also just cook spanish food, so the same flavor just slightly different presentations ...
That was absolutely the worst season - I don't think any of them should have won - actually I did like Sam.

At least he used a cooking term.
GizmoMaltese Yeah, I’m confused. A TV show integrating a paid Tourism partner is nothing new or unusual.
No one said it was illegal, just that the governor said it would cost zero but it actually cost $400k.
How is paying tipped employees complicated, you pay them their salary, they keep 100% of their tips
Bc for most waitstaff their pay is barely $3/hr. Everything else is tips
Haw haw...

Honestly, what they did to marcel... That was disgusting. Just wrong. Shame.

That was my thought. I thought it was sweet, she wanted them to succeed and didn't want to hurt them. Compassion and empathy should be a virtue, not a "scandal"
When cooking shows started becoming, like the media, more about the hosts:chefs, and anchors, instead of the information they are to present, they really lost their purpose, imho.

Under the pressure, its already got to be an intense environment but being singled out like Marcel was and then consistently picked on, back stabbed, physically assaulted, and treated like shit in general by at least 6 of the contestants was just wrong and totally against the spirit of being a so called Top Chef as was the case. Sure Marcel annoyed them but to treat and abuse him the way they did, I have huge respect for Marcel for keeping it about the food and holding his head high throughout what would of been a horrible daily grind of being hated.
Good luck. :-)
Top chef season 2 were the days of our lives. Such good and different times
why cant the US pay their waiters the minimum wage excluding the tips?
They do in some states. Depends on state laws regarding this type of work. The state of Oregon requires that everyone gets paid the state minimum wage plus whatever tips. Servers there have no issue with tip sharing with the kitchen. However, in a state like Illinois where their laws allow employers to average tips into the minimum wage but still ask servers to share tips, that's just fkd! I did it anyways and still made over 1000 a week. Part of it is because of the tips as wage situation, you work harder for those tips and give amazing service. Everyone I served from out of state or other countries commented on the quality of service in Chicago.
Because restaurants use tipping as an excuse to get out of it
Yaaasss... the pea purée controversy will never die!
So if you remove the stories that don't include the actual show it would be about 3 minutes.

Hold on, how is “showing up to work drunk” a form of harassment? That doesn’t make any sense.
You can't just say it about someone. They have to admit it or have them tested to prove it. If their Dr has them on medication that is causing them to act different and they aren't drunk then you have a big problem. That is how N.Y. labor laws are anyway.
It is if the drunk person starts to be a jerk.
I Eat Plastic, then that’s not harassment by “showing up to work drunk”. They would be harassing someone by being a jerk to them. Not by showing up to work drunk.
Payton Yoder I know.
I thought someone was going to be accused of "cooking the books". Oh well.
Move on
Agreed. It's exactly why I stopped watching. It was blatant.
I'm from Canada and I've never seen horse meat at the grocery store! And it is not a Canadian tradition..."NOT".
And then you remember Graham Elliot was the nicest of the judges in MasterChef...
wolf in sheep's clothing
He still is
I work in the industry it's so funny how big owners talk and have no idea about how to manage finances
Chef life behind closed doors. Yikes.
I've never understood the objections to horse meat, as if horse are somehow sacrsanct while cows apparently deserve to be slaughtered. It makes absolutely no sense.
Horses aren't meant to be eaten, they were born to be ride! Have you ever seen a cow race in the Kentucky Derby? =/
Jesus, lots of messed up people.
