You know a song is good when people are still coming to listen to it after years. Masterpieces never get old!
Hear, hear!
So interesting, I knew this song was good the first time I heard it in the 80's. It's not rocket science, you know. Grow up !
@@chanjackie2299Chill out, Chan Jackie... ur harshin' our groove..

Ja ik!
here!
it's incredible how they manage to make their songs sound so happy but when you look at the lyrics it's some super sad deep stuff. I really like that about them. they never fail to describe what one feels.
The ability to be able to laugh at yourself is not for everyone!
Goths, not Emos
dunno what you guys mean, I was simply admiring their music ...
@@SuccubusGoblin That's fine, if you listen to some emo music you might get what I mean
@@sirrobinofloxley7156 I do, I listen to many different genres but dunno what you mean, sorry
I love the deep breaths by Robert Smith throughout the song. Gasps and sighs that give the song a suffocated feeling.
My mind is going in a totally different direction with the "breaths" being made 🫣🫣🫣
@@metalidolkey2416 Is this song about masturbating? Lol

The Cure has their own SOUND, mad respect
⛏️⛏️⛏️⛏️⛏️⛏️
I bet
I was petrified of Robert Smith as a child. He was just mad looking with his Edward Scissorhands hair, black eyes, pale face and red smeared lipstick. I was about 3 or 4 when this song was re released in 1990 and every time it came on the TV I'd hide behind the back of the sofa. I was so scared of him I use to check if he was under my bed. Most kids are scared of monsters under their beds I was scared Robert Smith was under mine. It's funny now cause The Cure are one of my favourite bands now and this is one of my favourite song from them.
Burton inspired by himself for Edward ;)

Lyrics
I've waited hours for this
I've made myself so sick
I wish I'd stayed asleep today
I never thought this day would end
I never thought tonight could ever be
This close to me
Just try to see in the dark
Just try to make it work
To feel the fear before you're here
I make the shapes come much too close
I pull my eyes out
Hold my breath and wait until I shake
But if I had your faith
Then I could make it safe and clean
If only I was sure
That my head on the door was a dream
I've waited hours for this
I've made myself so sick
I wish I'd stayed asleep today
I never thought this day would end
I never thought tonight could ever be
This close to me
But if I had your face
Then I could make it safe and clean
Oh, if only I was sure
That my head on the door was a dream
Thanks for the lyrics!

You know, one of the best things about being in my 50's now, is that I lived my teenage years in the 80's........Priceless, and I wouldn't change them for the world!
two many days ago....
I totally agree.
The 80's was the best decade to be a youth!
me too. and it was an era of free spirit and great memories
@@lyndonmauricio-j4v oh yeah.... 57 can still feel the mood n smell the best.
This video perfectly describes depression. Anyone who's ever been there knows it doesn't feel like being already in the abyss, it feels like being stuck, dirty, with everything around looking like a mess impossible to order, on the edge of the end. And even at the end of it one feels stuck, cold and alone. Exactly like the song hints.
Well said friend
Well actually i think it describe more insomnia and claustrophobia and social anxiety. People these days they think every song speak about depression , as if every artist in the world is depressif. it's like depression is the golden word on internet.
@@nightimeRollback it can be describing depression, it can be describing insomnia, it can be describing claustrophobia…..at the end of the day, only we know what’s going on, in our own heads….and if what it means to you differs to what it means to me, so be it ….neither of us are in the wrong….we both got our struggles…
Depression? Cold and alone?
It is a light and airy song in a major key. The video starts with the band cramped together in a wardrobe in direct sunlight. That is the polar opposite of everything you said.
@@SotiCoto You're under the impression that depression is only "cold and alone"? Where does "Cold" even come from? I've never heard anyone describe depression as "cold". People with depression can be surrounded by friends and still depressed, being alone isnt a symptom of depression.
Robert Smith and the cure are the unsung heroes of British rock and pop music massively influencel and apparently the most humblest of bands
Yup!!!
The only 80s song I know that doesn't have that typical 80s feel. This song sounds very modern

@@SevAnsdigg-123huh? Overrated and underrated refer to public perception of things. I don’t see any logical fallacy in thinking that an artist should be more appreciated by the general public
This is one of those special songs that no matter how many times you listen to it, it gives you chills as if you're listening to it for the first time. This is my favourite song by the Cure. Absolute gem.

I can't think of any other music video that incorporates so much claustrophobia, jeopardy and discomfort. It's the antithesis of sunny pop schtick. Truly unique sound, look and impact, even after almost 40 years
There are 2 versions of this song: one with, and one without headphones. The one with headphones is definitely a more intimate experience!

Incredibly ahead of its time production wise. Sounds like it's from the 2000s/2010s. Everything else from the 80s is drenched in reverb and chorus (not a bad thing!) Just makes this stand out so much

The 80's were more musically diverse and innovative than you give it credit for. But it's true that The Cure was far ahead of it's time in many ways, and a lot deeper than much of the popular music of the era.
It honestly makes me think a lot of The Postal Service. I wonder how influenced they were by The Cure.
wow it's great to listen to this with headphones, it feels like they're whispering and clapping in your ear
+Jorge E Pink floyd is also very good headphone music!
Very destinaton for yong gherl..thankyu very mutch

wow thats creepy.
Basic panning effects
Roberts whispery, clear, voice is perfect for every melody and/or riff he creates. It's just perfect in every way. There are very few cure songs that I'm not a fan of, but even those are still good songs.
The beat is nice but dude cannot sing at all! Sounds like he's straining his vocal cords trying to get a tune out.
@@natashakcarson he just doesn't have a conventional pop voice. Everybody's got their own preferences though. But if he was straining his voice he wouldn't be able to still be doing this in his 60s lol
@@natashakcarson you could say the same thing about David Bowie's singing... his voice was always on a thightrope and yet it his songs are great, by some miracle. I guess its about the emotion conveyed, too. (We could speak about Sia, Lana del rey, Matt bellamy...)
Robert Smith is not really singing off-key, I dont think he is straining his vocal cords, he's kinda whispering without really breathing
He just has a very strange way of singing and no technique BUT in the Cure songs, it works. Close to me and Boys dont cry are the ones where its singing is the most peculiar though
@@askingforthemoon it's like Bob Dylan as well. He can't sing, his notes are off yet people will still hype these artists up like they have all the talent in the world. Just goes to show that whatever the entertainment world pushes out there, there's aways gonna be the sheep following. They can make anyone look and sound good when they're not at all. Look at everything in today's music as well with all these trash rappers that don't have talent yet everyone praises them no matter how bad they sound.
@@natashakcarson well... I would be interested to know which singers you like.. I am not a fan of bob dylan but it's not that bad. I just personally dont appreciate his voice, rather than his singing. Plus, he's a songwriter, and meaningful lyrics in a song are important for a lot of listeners.
To be fair I think yes singing matters in a song but if melodies are great, it can goes through without a hitch. To a certain extent ofc, I can't stand the shaggs or sarah brand but I'm a huge devotee of The Cure compositions/instrumentals (Robert Smith's voice sounds better in other songs ), so it's not annoying to me. And I dont feel like a sheep for liking it.
Btw, I just noticed you wrote 4 times the same comment under that video, I understand that you give your opinion once but was it really necessary taking your time... for a song you dont like 😅 anyway
Probably the most amazing thing about this song is that it hasn't dated AT ALL. You could release this as a new single in 2015 and it would still sound contemporary. No cheesy synthesizers here!
you're very right
Both Lol Tolhurst and Porl Thompson played keyboards on this song. The sounds of organ, marimba, musette are played on a synthesizer. No *cheesy* synth, though.
YuFen Ju
I'd argue a guess at that he was able to understand basic chords and enough to play the parts Robert and Porl wrote, but not enough to write songs on the keyboard of his own, at least until he made his own band. His drumming's good enough that I wouldn't really complain if I was in a band with him, but nothing amazing.
Not only that, you could release the VIDEO and hipsters in Williamsburg would lap it up as hyper-modern.

'But if I had your face' is an error I suppose?
The Cure is itself a timeless masterpiece, I've watched- or more listened to them from the beginning, and I admire them still today. .
The production on this track is super ahead of its time. It literally sounds like something the postal service would release or some late 2010s bedroom pop music.

This is such an organic video. In the moment. Unedited. The purest of the Cure. I challenge you to find this state of mind in 2023.
A masterpiece. The thing about the 80's was that new quality music was being produced at such a rate that timeless classics like this did not get to number 1
1985 I was in some department store with friends talking about wanting to see the movie sixteen candles when I found the head on the door cassette someone said they were good I bought it and wore it out. Kind of funny how we had so much fun listening to a song about depression.
Yup, wipes the floor with crap these days.
They made more money, relatively, now it's easier
I was born in 1989 and i love 80s music and i love this song, but lets not forget what did sometimes get to number 1 in the 80's
St Winifred's School Choir - There's No One Quite Like Grandma
Shakin Stevens - Green Door
Band Aid II - Do they knows its christmas
Spitting Image - The Chicken Song
It was just as capable as any decade of producing rubbish songs :D
@@JP-bc4ie They weren't rubbish songs. They were novelty songs, and they normally happened around Christmas and they happened in every decade not just the 80's

Never thought of them as the Cure for something like loneliness, but I love that idea. 💜

I really think this song describe how insomnia , claustrophobia and social anxiety feels like , yet the song is not sad or happy it's really impressive.

We loved the 80s music, we loved The Cure and we loved this song. We enjoyed that time period, because it was great in every way. We built some amazing memories, hang out with friends and enjoyed time of being young and being alive. It was the best and still is the best in music and entertainment, things were great and still makes me nostalgic thinking about it or hearing this great music. Still enjoy it as much, if not more. I just turned 57 and this music is just as dear and great to me as it was back then.

The CURE : still one of the greatest british band . Love their style and their creative videos. Sorry for my bad english spoken. Friendly from France. Love Robert Smith and The CURE 👍🎼🎶🎸👋
And very British which is great
I have had this song as my ringtone since flip phones in the early 90's! Never get tired of it!
Last week, first week of November of 2022 I was on my daily walk and a young woman (maybe 20-25) came up on me on her bicycle and I heard the rhythm of a song and I thought: "I know that?!?" I recognized it as the Cure, but as it so often happens I know the song and band but not he name of the tune. So, as she rides past she gets a bit farther away and she sits up and starts dancing wile riding no-handed and it made me feel incredibly joyous. The combo of the song and the woman riding to work most likely and she was grooving on life to the Cure! Just thinking about it brings a smile to my old, fully grey bearded face;-)>
Love it!

Hello
As an outsider Cure fan,I feel had this song been released 07/08/09 time when indie and rock bands still had a place in the top 40. This would have been a hit again. It sounds so ahead of its time.
It was of its time
One of my favorite bands of all time - saw them 3 times, once in the front row. This was one of my favorite dance songs - the girl I was with at the time was also a high energy dancer - she and I danced to this song together and the song after - "World Destruction" by Afrika Bambaataa at Caberet Metro in Chicago in 1986. We cleared the floor and the management gave us a round of free drinks for the show ! 80s had so much energy and positivity, it was freakin awesome.
The Cure's music is timeless..their tunes never age & still sound fresh.. they're completely unique as well...I've not heard anyone else similar...I love em.😊
This is, without doubt one of my favourite songs. The strong feeling of intimacy, feeling snug and cosy ...
I watch this video every morning to have some positivity for the rest of the day. It just makes me inexplicably happy. This and The Lovecats.
