Yes, everything magical and addictive that can be dreaming of being devoured by a giant spider while the tin soldiers you play with sing a lullaby. Or perhaps, something or someone that comes at night to "hurt" you.

To me it feels overtly about sleep paralysis. The video only strengthens that. The sensation that you're pinned down, unable to move, even breath right sometimes, while the horrors your mind conjurs up, created in a feedback loop as a panic response by the brain to being paralyzed, play with you and do whatever they can to terrify you. I've had sleep paralysis episodes many times, and while they've been less frightening lately because I know what they are and immediately get to work on trying to move my toes or fingers to get out of it, while reminding myself whatever I see or hear isn't real (that can still be tough to maintain though, your mind is wild with how it will play tricks on you), in the past, when they first started happening to me: they were sheer terror. Seeing someone peeking over the foot of my bed with shining, inhuman eyes and smiling, seeing a ghost-like face tower over the corner of my room and glaring at me, and when I'd shut my eyes and try to get out of it like a dream, demonic growls in my ears, rapid, violent footsteps banging from down the hall up to my door followed by manic knocking on my door, voices calling my name that sound familiar but just slightly off... The worst one I ever had, I'm not even sure if it wasn't just a full-blown dream, but it was so vivid and real-feeling, I remember thinking "Oh my god ghosts and demons are actually real and I'm gonna fucking die to one" when it happened. Sleeping in my apartment in a queen sized bed, TV across from me, just like real life, which is what has me convinced that it wasn't just a dream, but the most elaborate sleep paralysis episode ever: It's pretty simple, I don't remember exactly what happened leading up to the big moment, but there I am laying in bed, realizing "something" is in the room with me and I can't move. Suddenly, low, booming rumbling, like a bad earthquake entirely situated in my room, but nothing is visually shaking, shit's just booming and rumbling like something is building up. Suddenly, I feel myself being dragged by my feet across the foot of the bed, and can literally see it as my body flies across the room, above the TV just below the high-ish ceiling, and whatever force it is pulling and lifting me slams my body against the wall above the TV, and just pins me there long enough to have that thought and feel the fear of no control, of being the plaything of something unthinkable- and suddenly I'm back in my bed. I shot up a bit, startled by the experience, breathing heavy and generally freaked out for a minute before I finally convinced myself that this is real, that wasn't. Still though, to this day I don't know if that was sleep paralysis or a vivid nightmare that accurately recreated my room and made me feel truly awake. Anyway, i think the giant spider consuming Robert whole at the end of the video is the biggest part that drives home that this is about sleep paralysis.
I always thought it was about sexual abuse, how children are visited by abusers in the middle of the night. The freeze response typical for trauma. And the “don’t struggle or I will only love you more” as the kind of f***ed up thing an abuser would say.
The origin of the band name "The Cure" has been explained by the band's frontman, Robert Smith, in various interviews over the years. According to Smith, the name "The Cure" was chosen when the band was still in its early stages, and it was meant to be a contrast to the more aggressive and confrontational names that many punk bands were adopting at the time. Robert Smith wanted a name that conveyed a positive and hopeful message. The idea was that the music of the band would serve as a kind of cure for the ills and negativity that people might be experiencing. It was a deliberate choice to have a name that suggested a remedy or solution, and it has become an iconic name in the world of alternative and post-punk music.
So the name of the band was chosen when it was in its early stages? Always thought most bands would wait to come up with several albums before deciding on a name... 😏
One of my all time favorite songs. It's so hypnotic, the cure are one of those bands which influenced so many artists It's hard to even quantify their impact
I'm 52 and remember when this song would come on at a club in the 80's and the floor would be packed with people. I wanna go back, I miss those days. Hella good times.
cant believe i grew up in the 80s , listened to the cure on the radio , but for some reason never heard this song till yesterday , i had it on repeat at work on my head phones the whole day and got home and couldnt help my self to crank it loud on my home stereo , my neighbours must have thought i have dropped dead and left it on repeat , the ending to the song just lifts your soul , pure genius of a song
Yes...everything that means everything you feel and think about when it comes to how you feel about getting though everything in life...the Cure cult following gets it when most don't🎶🎶🕶
Romantic??? Dude this song is about robert smiths uncle who told hik bedtime stories as a child about a spider that eats children in their sleep. In what universe is that romantic?
I used to think that this song was a great song. Until, you realise, after reading the lyrics. It's extremely dark & deadset creepy. You do realise that it's about s**ual a***e (spiderman = rock spider). Possibly even ritualistic. And going by the imagery, with the all the band members covered in spider webs, that they're all victims of the "spiderman".
I’m 19 discovering the cure and their amazing sound. From seeing all the music videos and reading comments I’m just amazed how they bring out so much emotion and humanity in people. Robert smith is a genius.
This is in my opinion one of the most atmospheric beautiful/ scary, calming/ frightening songs out there I feel like this song should have at least 200 million views. A fucking classic.
It’s always songs I listened to as a teenager that brings back the feels for me, not sure if new things I listen to now will do the same for Me in the future ? Back then we had time to lie on the bed and just listen huh
As a child I was so scared of this video, it even gave me nightmares. It's been a long journey since then now that I consider both song&images one of the finest creations of pop music ever. Don't be afraid of the dark, kids, it will eventually become your friend.
Just checked the cure off my bucket list ! Saw them live 5/14 for Mother’s Day and this song sounds just as amazing live as it does on the video ! Thank you to this band for your wonderful service ….real music and real love for your fans , love you guys !
Why don’t you ?! I’ve always wanted to see them !! Especially before they retire or something happened to any of the members, so happy they decided to finally tour the US

I saw The Cure live tonight and it was EVERYTHING I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE AND MORE. This has been my favorite band for over 30 years and I'm stoked!!! 😂 They played LULLABY, as I was walking out in a forest, but not alone, to my car. It was a magical night. Thank you Robert Smith 💋
52 Years old and it's in my head like I was 15 and in my car cruising around with my best friend singing like it was our job. There was nothing to worry about. Nothing to get us stressed....how I miss those days. Maybe I need to go for a drive and listen again.
Your never too old. This character reminds me of Renfield in Dracula. Robert Smith is just great. I saw them in Dublin. But I can't switch off have to watch a few videos before sleepy time. They are playing in Belfast tomorrow 2nd Nov Friday night.
I remeber being 14 and horribly depressed after my parents got divorced I saw this video on MTV classic and The cure automatically became my best friend and a favourite band:) they're till this day and RS is my crush foreveeeeeeeer
If I could choose the song to forget and hear the one for the first time again, I would undoubtedly choose “Lullaby”. There are several songs in the universe that made me feel this way so far. It’s just my audial drug
I love the Cure because their music evokes so many different emotions. I find it erotic, but then again there are deeply sad and happy songs. Great band.
The Cure is a major player in the UK music scene and will continue to be for generations. Amazing vocals and music long may you continue Mr. Smith. Look forward to attending your next gig!!!
Simultaneously both cute and creepy. Sweet and sinister. HOW do the Cure manage that? Juxtaposing jangly guitar with breathy, ethereal vocals. They say death is like sleep... so this must be the last Lullaby we hear!
I adore this song. I’m an Aussie and we have some lovely big hairy huntsman spiders here which are very gentle, timid and shy. I love them and in my family and extended family they are never killed. We grew up with one in our room as kids named Herman and he would run up and down my arm and never bit me. My 6’tall Aussie son however is petrified, so I thought I’d show him this clip and he couldn’t watch it til the end 😂. Such a beautiful song with slightly creepy lyrics and I love it even more now than I did when I first heard it.
This year I'm closing the loop. Full circle. I saw the Cure on their Disintegration tour when I graduated from high school. Best summer ever. In a couple of weeks I'm going to see them again and put an end to my concert addiction. Started with the best and going to end the way I began.
I'm the only one who thinks that The Cure has the greatest melodies ever? My god, that guitar riff might not be tricky or super complex but it totally works, is incredible, it almost sounds like unpredictble, I mean, when you start listening the riff you expect some other notes to be played, like "oh it's just another typical melody that it goes like this others". I know it might sound really stupid I just wanna know if someone shares my opinion xd (Sorry for bad spelling, english's not my mother tongue)
I'm not some "The Cure" superfan, and I know them mainly trough televized hits, but I sure think that they really have some of the greatest riffs of popular music in general.
When the bass first hits my head starts bobbing and my body starts breathing . The groove in this masterpiece is and will always be hypnotic. I'm 59 now and I still groove to this. Long live The Cure. Arohanui from New Zealand.
well i did have a walkman. Got it from dad's legacy around 1997, with original earphones. I use that in blackout time, so i can hear music and news.. I cant even throw it out, cause its precious even it is kinda dead now.
The Cure was so original and creative. Everyone is giving different reasons about why no one could create this today. You could never recreate it because it was the 80s. The Cure is one of the first bands I think of when I think of bands that represent the 80s. Maybe there"s a band that could cover a song by the Cure, besides Adele!
This music video perfectly encapsulates sleep paralysis. Wonder if that was their inspiration? If so, very apt. Anyway, saw The Cure many years ago in concert (they were my first concert actually) and they were incredible. Still one of my all-time favorite bands.
No, the filmclip was inspired by Eraserhead (David Lynch) - the lyrics were inspired by a combination of a recurring dream he had has a child of a spider eating him, and the lullabies his father would sing him. They are amazing live aren't they?? :)
@zoeherriot honestly reminds me of the book The Spider and the Fly Poem by Mary Howitt, which has the quote. Will you walk into my parlour?" said a spider to a fly;
Sleep paralysis is one of the worst things I have ever experienced. The only way I could move was when I cried out to Jesus Christ. Spiritual realities are real. Jesus is the only way we can be saved from our sins and reconciled with our holy Creator God.
My favourite song! It somehow harmonizes with my soul. I do not have certain memories associated with it, but for some reason, when I listen to it, I am feeling nostalgic. Thank you, the Cure)
There is just something so magical and addictive in this song.
Addictive is right. This song is withdrawal Incarnate.

On candy stripe legs the spiderman comes
Softly through the shadow of the evening sun
Stealing past the windows of the blissfully dead
Looking for the victim shivering in bed
Searching out fear in the gathering gloom and
Suddenly a movement in the corner of the room
And there is nothing I can do
When I realize with fright
That the spiderman is having me for dinner tonight
Quietly he laughs and shaking his head
Creeps closer now
Closer to the foot of the bed
And softer than shadow and quicker than flies
His arms are all around me and his tongue in my eyes
Be still be calm be quiet now my precious boy
Don't struggle like that or I will only love you more
For it's much too late to get away or turn on the light
The spiderman is having you for dinner tonight
And I feel like I'm being eaten
By a thousand million shivering furry holes
And I know that in the morning I will wake up
In the shivering cold
And the spiderman is always hungry

According to Smith, the name "The Cure" was chosen when the band was still in its early stages, and it was meant to be a contrast to the more aggressive and confrontational names that many punk bands were adopting at the time.
Robert Smith wanted a name that conveyed a positive and hopeful message. The idea was that the music of the band would serve as a kind of cure for the ills and negativity that people might be experiencing. It was a deliberate choice to have a name that suggested a remedy or solution, and it has become an iconic name in the world of alternative and post-punk music.
when does easy cure come in play in this story?
The band that sings about being eaten by a spider?
So the name of the band was chosen when it was in its early stages? Always thought most bands would wait to come up with several albums before deciding on a name... 😏
My dad always said if they're the cure, I'd hate to see the disease.
Thank you Mr. Amerishape, very cool.
One of my all time favorite songs. It's so hypnotic, the cure are one of those bands which influenced so many artists It's hard to even quantify their impact

I'm also 50 this is a classic and always will be 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
My second favorite after "pictures of you" But Love this song
cant believe i grew up in the 80s , listened to the cure on the radio , but for some reason never heard this song till yesterday , i had it on repeat at work on my head phones the whole day and got home and couldnt help my self to crank it loud on my home stereo , my neighbours must have thought i have dropped dead and left it on repeat , the ending to the song just lifts your soul , pure genius of a song

Yes...everything that means everything you feel and think about when it comes to how you feel about getting though everything in life...the Cure cult following gets it when most don't🎶🎶🕶
Robert Smith claims he isn't goth
Romantic??? Dude this song is about robert smiths uncle who told hik bedtime stories as a child about a spider that eats children in their sleep. In what universe is that romantic?
@@niger9006 The violin at the end
Such a sexy beat.. and that unforgettable “Spider-Man is having you for dinner tonight”.. just awesome! 😂❤
Indeed ❤❤❤
I used to think that this song was a great song. Until, you realise, after reading the lyrics. It's extremely dark & deadset creepy. You do realise that it's about s**ual a***e (spiderman = rock spider). Possibly even ritualistic. And going by the imagery, with the all the band members covered in spider webs, that they're all victims of the "spiderman".
Like Haniball Lector
I’m 19 discovering the cure and their amazing sound. From seeing all the music videos and reading comments I’m just amazed how they bring out so much emotion and humanity in people. Robert smith is a genius.
In the same boat haha, 18 yrs old and just discovering how awesome they actually are
Stoked! You two have excellent taste🖤🖤🖤
Yeah dude this shit was sooo good when i was you're age check out Dinosaur Jr for a little bit harder super great writing music 😊
Same but I’m 20 😄
same!! It's incredible
This is in my opinion one of the most atmospheric beautiful/ scary, calming/ frightening songs out there I feel like this song should have at least 200 million views. A fucking classic.
I can't put in words what this song does to me emotionally no matter how often I already listened to it
I know exactly what you mean, it's just one of those tracks.
It’s always songs I listened to as a teenager that brings back the feels for me, not sure if new things I listen to now will do the same for
Me in the future ? Back then we had time to lie on the bed and just listen huh
💯💯👋 agree!
Fact
I completely agree
The greatness of The Cure…musically and visually.
Ein großartiger Song!.....auch nach 30 Jahren 😊
In 20 years time people will still be listening to the Cure.
As a child I was so scared of this video, it even gave me nightmares. It's been a long journey since then now that I consider both song&images one of the finest creations of pop music ever. Don't be afraid of the dark, kids, it will eventually become your friend.
I am, today (I'm 37), afraid of MGMT's kids video
I don't know what that stands for but 4 letter acronyms are generally scary😃👍
My dad showed me this video when I was a kid. It gave me nightmares for years

No-one could write a hook that transports you to another world like Robert Smith. Majestic song.
Fun fact: this wasn't supposed to be a music video, they just filmed a normal night in Robert Smith's life
even with the drummer?

Definitely. Saw them live last December and it was a religious experience, especially during Lullaby and A Forest.
Same here. Way back in the day though. 92.

It's really, really hard to pick my favorite song from The Cure. They have so many incredible, one-of-a-kind songs it's ridiculous.
so true
the Cure’s influence on music cannot be overstated . i think they had a huge impact on the music of the 90’s
Just checked the cure off my bucket list ! Saw them live 5/14 for Mother’s Day and this song sounds just as amazing live as it does on the video ! Thank you to this band for your wonderful service ….real music and real love for your fans , love you guys !
You're so luckky. I wish I could go to one of their concerts.
Why don’t you ?! I’ve always wanted to see them !! Especially before they retire or something happened to any of the members, so happy they decided to finally tour the US
@@andream6532 I would love too but my mom probably wouldn't let me. I'm not over 18 yet and she doesn't like the music I listen to so I doubt she would want to go with me. Hopefully when I'm older though, I'm almost 18 so maybe, just maybe. (that's if they're still touring)
Your momma is missing out and needs to realize her daughter has excellent taste in music !! I wish my daughter listened to the cure !!!

Same. My best friend passed tragically 2 years ago and this song/album was one of our groups favs. Brings back so many good memories. ❤
So very painfully true my friends 🖤.
You have experienced it and will keep it forever, that is what remains, even in the hardest hours, be grateful! Without the bitter, the sweet is never so sweet! But I'm drunk and alone, laugh
The bizarreness in this one its just amazing isnt it?
So hauntingly beautiful! The symphony of strings, so rich and full sounding, a true masterpiece!
Instrumentation and production are pure genius.
We may get old but The Cure never ages. The Cure have helped me battle, the many bad times in my life. Thank god for The Cure! 😊
This song and even the production is a masterpiece. The melodic dram taking place is simply classic.

Another MASTERPIECE among a lot of songs from The CURE. Great sound. Great melody. Great video. Love The CURE 👍🎼🎶🎸
Good music never gets old.

I'm 55 and know of the cure but this is the first time I've heard this,,,absolutely brilliant song,,wish I'd found it sooner
Your never too old. This character reminds me of Renfield in Dracula. Robert Smith is just great. I saw them in Dublin. But I can't switch off have to watch a few videos before sleepy time. They are playing in Belfast tomorrow 2nd Nov Friday night.
Best song the cure ever made
Yes!
and they made a lot of good ones:)

What´s about "In the forest, Hanging garden" and much more?
Matter of opinion but yes it's amazing
A song that could be about abuse, addiction, or mental health. That's why it strikes a chord with so many people.

Weird. I experienced something alike you. And yet If I could be back in that days, believe me I do it
If I could choose the song to forget and hear the one for the first time again, I would undoubtedly choose “Lullaby”. There are several songs in the universe that made me feel this way so far. It’s just my audial drug
The Cure 👍👍👍👍👍 Morrissey 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🇦🇷
I love the Cure because their music evokes so many different emotions. I find it erotic, but then again there are deeply sad and happy songs. Great band.

the best comment here so far.
Though this was later than Tim Burton (1993) so the joke fails. Both Tim and The Cure are the greatest. Well, and Danny Elfman!
@Retro Workshop...you are accurate about dates! I remember both at the current year!
Tim Burton wanted Robert to play Edward scissorhands but because he was touring with the cure he couldn't

Tomas Valus ♥️
Tomas Valus timelessly shit
Happy 30th anniversary, favourite album of all time. Listening once again front to back right now. The first part of this song is expecially amazing.
released on 10th of april 1989
This year I'm closing the loop. Full circle. I saw the Cure on their Disintegration tour when I graduated from high school. Best summer ever. In a couple of weeks I'm going to see them again and put an end to my concert addiction. Started with the best and going to end the way I began.
Wow, good for man 👨 👏 🙌 👌 👍
My girlfriend lost our tix to the cure show in NYC during disintegration tour
I'm the only one who thinks that The Cure has the greatest melodies ever? My god, that guitar riff might not be tricky or super complex but it totally works, is incredible, it almost sounds like unpredictble, I mean, when you start listening the riff you expect some other notes to be played, like "oh it's just another typical melody that it goes like this others". I know it might sound really stupid I just wanna know if someone shares my opinion xd (Sorry for bad spelling, english's not my mother tongue)
no se they’re just one of the greatest bands of all time let’s be honest
Get what you're saying and totally agree, it's kind of familiar riffs but incomplete and so original and satisfying
Yes, what applies here is the old saying in the book... 'Simplicity is the highest form of Sophistication.'
loescuche mucho afine delos ochenta
I'm not some "The Cure" superfan, and I know them mainly trough televized hits, but I sure think that they really have some of the greatest riffs of popular music in general.
This is a song that fascinates me even today ❤

When the bass first hits my head starts bobbing and my body starts breathing . The groove in this masterpiece is and will always be hypnotic. I'm 59 now and I still groove to this. Long live The Cure. Arohanui from New Zealand.

well i did have a walkman. Got it from dad's legacy around 1997, with original earphones. I use that in blackout time, so i can hear music and news.. I cant even throw it out, cause its precious even it is kinda dead now.

Just a kid from 1983 knew this was the right path. The Cure is one of the most amazing bands in rock history

This song sounds so sensual.

To me, it's about a rape
Some lyrics are just telling it

@zoeherriot honestly reminds me of the book The Spider and the Fly
Poem by Mary Howitt, which has the quote. Will you walk into my parlour?" said a spider to a fly;
