[Intro]
To your soul
To your soul
Cry
Cry
Cry
[Verse 1]
You leave in the morning with everything you own in a little black case
Alone on a platform, the wind and the rain on a sad and lonely face
[Verse 2]
Mother will never understand why you had to leave
But the answers you seek will never be found at home
The love that you need will never be found at home
[Chorus]
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
[Verse 3]
Pushed around and kicked around, always a lonely boy
You were the one that they'd talk about around town as they put you down
[Verse 4]
And as hard as they would try they'd hurt to make you cry
But you never cried to them, just to your soul
No, you never cried to them, just to your soul
[Chorus]
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (Crying to your soul)
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (Crying to your soul)
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away (Crying to your soul)
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
[Bridge]
Cry, boy, cry
Cry, boy, cry
Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
Cry, boy, cry, boy, cry
[Verse 5]
You leave in the morning with everything you own in a little black case
Alone on a platform, the wind and the rain on a sad and lonely face
[Chorus]
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away

@@ElectronicHouseFlash I'm referring to the tune you melt.
I'm 57 was 20 when this came out and had just become a Dad again , my second daughter born just about the time this song was in the charts, she came out to me as being gay in her teens, I said oh good n told her I was a lesbian as well , how can you be a lesbian dad she said, well I like women you like women made her stop crying and she laughed , wasn't bothered in the least as long as she was happy is all that mattered , she is now married to a woman n has a son, played her this song at the time she came out , which for me has a different meaning , I've always had the feeling in my heart in my soul of complete loneliness , emptiness, despite having my girls now in their 30s and of course now grandsons , this song is just great for all its meanings and however you personally interpret the song just kick back and enjoy , its a real masterpiece.

That's so moving and eye-opening. Thank you!!! I was just thinking about my first time hearing it, and indeed... I was a 10-y.o. smalltown boy, living in a small town in central Bosnia, walking to the city centre to buy me a Bronski Beat cassette and then walking back home and listening to it on my walkman... I didn't know what they looked like or what they stood for, the only thing I knew was that they were from England and their sound was fresh. Enough for me to make up the rest in my Smalltown Head ☺ Those were very happy days... We used to be such happy kids ❤
@@intangibleassetsmusic Wonderful comment. Did you live through the chaotic days of the Bosnian War?
@@landser3336 thanks a lot! Partly I did, yes. I left the country in July of 1993, two years into a conflict, but that didn't stopped me from living through all what happened. To tell you the truth, in a way I still do. It comes back every now and then and it's as vivid as if it happened yesterday...
I was born in 82, and came from a busted up home. My mum then ran pubs. I left home at 16, got into drugs, and lost everything, and became a complete scumbag, and went raving until 21, when I joined the army and went to war. I then did 5 years, got PTSD, and got kicked out for drugs in 2008. Then I lost everything again, and rebuilt my life, and moved to Australia, drove to Mongolia, and travelled 35 countries. I had a bad car crash which disabled me, and I'm still having surgeries for the injuries. I'm 41 now and run a building and project managing company. I have an equally damaged girlfriend of 7 years, and we have a house, and a veg garden and chickens. We have one rule in this house....dignity, love, compassion and understanding are more important than anything else. Wherever you're going through....just enjoy what you can from it, and see it for what it is...a scene from the film of your life. Life is both beautiful and tough...so don't make yours, or anyone else's harder than it already is
I love you all, and wish you well! X

This song changed my life.
I remember the first time I saw the music video for this song in an isolated small town boy in northern Alberta, Canada. After school my brothers and I watched CBC's 'Video Hits with Samantha Taylor'. I was 15/16 years old ... my brothers were playing games when the Smalltown Boy music video started.
It was me. My life. All of it.
Every word went straight to my heart and for the first time in my life, I did not feel alone.
I remember being so paranoid looking to see if any of my family recognized me, recognizing the content, the lyrics, the terrible loneliness, the fear, the hatred and the bullying. Years later a dear friend heard my story while we were roommates and she bought me the CD of an album I was too afraid to buy as a teenager. (I still have it by the way Lavender Menace.)
This song is everything to me. When someone asks me what life was like growing up in the 80s, gay in small town nowhere, I tell them it's 'Smalltown Boy' by Bronski Beat and the music video is about fleeing to save your life. I ❤ you Bronski Beat. Always. You may have saved my life.

It really wont, together with the 70's music, ever lasting music died at the end of the 1990's. Millenial whoop killed music and then came the Voice of and music is now officially dead. Nothing to do with age and nostalgia of us old farts, it's all the same autotune and whoop that sounds great when you hear it the first time and put on repeat for 10 times, rince and repeat the next No. 1 hit and get fed up and end up back in the eighties because that music never bores and you want to repeat 100 times and more

That s why some of our today artist are still using them. Fir exemple this is the Main soundtrack of Bad Habits- Ed Sheran
@@emmanuelsengo684 r/lewronggeneration 🤣 plenty great music about mate whatever the year
You can find good music in any year if you look hard enough but with the 50s,60s,70s,80s there is an abunence of it. No one can ever deny this, no matter how woke you are.
The words to this song always bring me down to earth. I am not gay, but that doesn't matter, the song is highlighting someone that is different. I was sexually abused by a guy from 8 to 11 years old in a small community in Norfolk, as a result I got badly bullied for being quite. A few years later at 16 this 'smalltown boy' escaped to join the army - still cannot stop shedding a tear to this song though!
Thank you for sharing Bro!! Yore not alone, keep it strong!! Greetings from Amsterdam

One of the best songs out there.
80 are magic for several reasons: one of them is this music is made by gay people but not for only gay people but for all people
Absolutely
Miss music videos like this where they tell a story and not cliche.
Yeahhhh 👍
80's music will never be matched in substance , variety, and unique sound!!!! I love you 80's..I sit and try to remember songs 🎵 like this to feel my days of youth...

What is the magic that they can't do that kind of music videos? I don't know 1 good song of the last 10 years, it's so sad. Despacito is that what music has become.. Damn
After all these years this tune still gives me the shivers.........what a great song!!!!!
If i ever had a kid and he turned out to be queer I am sure I would have given him money when he turned 18 and told him never to return.

This single, this hit is about our childhood, adulthood. Becoming Man. Bringing up our character and spirit. Very strong song. 😊
Still stirring people like it's fresh 40 plus years later..
one of the best things about 50 years old,is the fact that i lived my teenage years in the 80's that is priceless and I am grateful!!!

I am 20 and I really wish I could of experienced the 80s!
Certainly with ya on that one !
What an absolute incredible time !!
This song speaks for all people from small towns, where we haven't been understood. It still makes me sad.
It is heartbreaking indeed. But mind you, if you were brave enough to be different...chapeau.
It talks about a person who had to go away from home (for any reason).
That’s why you move to the bigger cities. That’s why places like London, New York. Paris, San Fran have more gay people/ open minded people.
Still misunderstood...🤔
@@SimonLeeds There a lot of lgbqt people in small town too, they are just afraid to come out
Man, some people have to grow up fast. Nothing but compassion...
What it’s nice with music is it bring’s people together no hate or bad feelings, thank you life for that marvellus thing called music
I was working at that time ( 1984) in a famous Camden Town nightclub and Bronski Beat came for a gig, very few people knew about them like me altough this 45 rpm record was goin' up the sales, can't remember who of those three asked me to help them unloading instruments and all what they needed for the gig , I still have got the flier of their gig...
Pass it down to family, I got a blue Peter badge 😊
That's awesome!
J'aurais aimé les voir en concert...

This song has it all, just perfect. It sounds so sad and euphoric at the same time. You can really feel that someone is trying to break the chains and leave it all behind. Jimmy Somerville's angelic and beautiful voice still gets under my skin every time I hear it, pure gold.
I still get shivers down my spine even after hearing this for the 1000th time, it's totally timeless.
@@candytiger644 Same!
spot on...melancholic yet uplifting...an electronic blues...a beautiful lament
One of the most euphoric times of my life was leaving home - yes, with a suitcase on a train from a small seaside town to the big city (Brum in my case). Magical time.
@@Chris-Shinn I can imagine that it was a magical moment that you will never forget. ✨ It's a scene we often see in movies.
In my opinion the greatest music video in music history. Never before or since has the narrative of a song been communicated so clearly in visual form. An important masterpiece.
Love this nostalgic 80's synth wave. Curren$y and Harry Fraud brought me here for sampling greatness

This famous song has finally been played 100 million times. congratulations! I don't think it's too late to keep this masterpiece from dying, so let's aim for it to be played a billion times!
RIP Steve Bronski, you were huge music pioneer in the 1980’s and will never be forgotten.
When this came out as a teenager living in a very abusive home I felt he had looked into my soul and about summed me up. This song made me not feel alone.. still makes me cry even now but love this song even with tears in my eyes.
Your one brave girl.

I Love that 2023 & 2024 have been bringing back our 80’s jams God how I miss being young again….
I love everything from the 70s and 80s. What a wild time it must have been!
Lyrics hit home. Dad didn’t speak to me for 12 years when he found out I was gay.
We were fortunate to have him back in our lives for the last 16 years of his life.
His last words to me was to give my handsome husband of mine a big hug for him.
😢😢❤️
Oh Tom: I’m so happy you had your Dad back in your life for the last 16 years of his life. Wishing you and your husband much love, light & blessings.
Living your lives to the fullest is the best gift you can give to each other. True love is so wonderful. I’m certain your Dad is proud of you.
Congratulations guys ! 💜
How blessed he was to have a son like you, with such an open heart xx
That's why it was so important for me to find a husband who wouldn't care about our kids being gay. I never want my kids to feel rejected or unloved because they're gay. Still too young to tell but whatever they choose they have our love and support 100%.

What a powerful message. Timeless masterpiece.
I've always held this song close to my heart, myself being a gay man who had to run from home. My father hasn't spoken to me in about 5 years since I came out, and I don't expect to be in contact with him again anytime soon. I still remember leaving town on the train and never looking back..just like the song. It's always felt very personal to me and I will always cherish this song

The lyrics are applicable to many different scenarios. Not just being gay. Many young people face a difficult time coming of age. Or even just being themselves. Timeless jam.
yea
No! it's explicitly about coming out as gay. You can interpret any way you which.
But this song is about that and very important to mark how it was in the 80s and earlier, this is a particular situation and it's specifically about that, there are other songs that would fit better for other circumstances
Many musicians never really fit in at school and where they lived and have a hard time going back, too many hard memories.
It is even more relevant coming out as White heterosexual and male.
Growing up in the as a Child in 70s and 80s I was so lucky to have grown up with my Childhood Music Memories from some of the Greatest Singers and Bands like Bronski Beat. Jimmy Somerville, Mick Hucknall Simply Red, Wham George Micheal, So much Talent they had Voices that just were so different as today they're are so many thst sound the same. Since people like Elvis, Beatles, Jimmy Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Elton John so many more completely Restyled and Changed our lives. Now st 49yrs old so glad I was there covering my bedroom wall with all the Posters from Smash Hits etc now seeing my 20yr old son that has a huge amount of Singers/bands he loves right back from the 50s and 60s+ is really great to see.

what makes me emotional is despite what he endures, he's not alone or unhappy in the end. He's got what he needs and he'll be okay.

I never realized how deeply sad this song is. My heart goes out to that guy, from 2020 all the way back to 1983.
Azazello1482 agreed!
The part where he pulls a sandwich out of a bag on the train eats it 😥 Something very sad about that part.
I didn't get what this song/video about when I was a kid, and the first time I saw it I just sort of shrugged it off. Now, I find it deeply moving. Funny thing, empathy, as you get older. That his dad didn't even shake his hand was the part that really got me.
