There are plenty of places to retire in the world that are cheap, but are they really safe. Is Thailand really safe?

I live in Thailand as well, the one thing I would add is RESPECT, all the people I have met respect me as I respect them.

Other aspects of Thainess, I'd like to share here. As a local 54-year-old Thai, Thailand still has cultural authenticity that people preserve and pass on from older to younger generations. People socially and culturally embrace harmony as one of their core values, starting at the family level. Thais are raised by parents and taught in school to be kind, empathetic, compromised, and hospitable to our guests/visitors or strangers. Unfortunately, recent news showed some farangs (Westerners) behaved badly by hitting local Thais, and their cases were reported on local news, growing negative perception of local Thais toward Westerners. Hopefully, this will be the last incident Thais experience. Thais are very forgiving people if they are treated with respect. Buddhism plays an important role over time for 95% of Thai people. Living in Thailand, safety is a self-participation of the local community, which becomes a common-sense rule for group living. On road safety, there have been many educational campaigns to create awareness of safe driving since I was in my mid-20s. Things are changing in a better way, but we still have a lot to do with safe driving. Don't forget to learn Thai; Thais will greatly appreciate it when farangs do that. Don't live like an expatriate farang; some I met living as an expat here for many years and returned home country without knowing how much they knew about the place they had lived.

Thank you so much for your comment. I'm learning Thai and I've got a video coming up talking about some of the mistakes I've made trying to learn the language.

I definitely noticed the social safety as I visited a chinese buddhist temple with many artifacts probably worth over 10k each without any form of security at the entrance. Just people expecting and having faith in the good will of their kin, which is a pipe dream in my home country (netherlands).

Thanks, it's a shame our own countries don't work the same way, big respect to Thailand for firstly looking out for their OWN people first before any else and secondly deporting foreigners that commit crimes there. Uk and U.S need to take note!

Australia is not remotely safe these days. I live in Townsville and lock anything I can. I can't wait to get to Thailand where crime is almost non-existent. The only safety issue is traffic and their driving. But if you drive safely you'll be fine.

Haha nonexistent. You're too naive to believe that. Watch Thai local news crime. Thailand is rank 1st in Asean countries in crimes like the Western world.

Thailand roads are not dangerous at all, they are actually better than Australias.

Recommending agents is not a great idea most of them are not necessary at best or scammers at worst.

Thailand is incredibly safe in some ways, but in other ways is extremely dangerous. Gang and criminal activity is rife, you are just not aware of it.

First rule of thumb, don’t fall asleep drunk. Don’t do it in a taxi, don’t do it in a bar, don’t do it on the beach, don’t do it anywhere.
Second rule of thumb, don’t carry that much cash. Your bank, any bank, will have phone apps that you can use. Use credit cards, use your phone apps, try not to use too much cash.
Third rule of thumb, don’t expect gogo bars and other areas where there’s tons of drunk tourists to be safe. Thailand in general with Thai people is super safe. Want to get into a fight? Then head over to drunk foreigner packed areas. That’s your best bet.

all the cameras cybersafety etc and zero tolerance and better economy have changed Thailand over the last 20 years - its not the "wildwest" and poor country anymore.
I was in thailand first time 1994 and it was a whole other country back then.
