Safety is often overlooked when people buy cars (esp while buying old cars). Perhaps a list of safest 5 cars by budget and by category would be great. I know NCAP has a list but a Matt take may just help reach more people and its importance :)
they said they will or have changed crash tests to account for the higher height of average car since so called suv became popular... so now sedans wagons etc have to be heaver top area so they will have more tedency to roll over so more stiff suspension and ex[ensive things to make it all preform with comfort... car height and weight should be penalizaed by heavy tax because in some situations, people in heavy car are protected in crash with lighter car but people in lighter car are more likley to suffer.. but statistically there is not so much benefit to heavy car for saftey as explained in video by aptera owners club on saftey. lighter cars cost less in raw materials, health problems (and climate change, if you beleive that is caused by co2 kinda of stuff) caused by emissions including microplastics from parts dumped at junkyard and stuff liek windhsield washer fluid, heavy car cost more to manufaturer and consumer (see aptera owners club video on cost and suspension geomrty), weight wears on roads creating more need to pay for road repairs, bigger cars make traffic congestion worse because space taken up per occupant in car. japan gives tax credit to kei car owner for these reson but of course law should also incentivise even smaller improvements.
weight and more weight futhur from ground makes it more expesnsive to make car not bumpy over road imperfection and make make it not roll over when moving fast around turns, taller wider cars are lress areodynamic which adds on energy cost to move the increased weight and make the weight crash safe.
certain geometries also help with crash saftey, for example egg shell is easy to break but when its part of a unbroken egg, its suprisingly strong structure against breaking
Many folk can't afford to think of safety, they just buy what they can afford, yes, it's easy to get a loan for a better car but who wants debt hanging around their neck like a millstone? Not to mention the shame of being in debt, something that, thankfully has never happened to me
The Alfa Romeo Giulia, and not many people know this, is still the only car that got 98% (And the Stelvio got 97%, same as the model Y). If you have watched Jeremy Clarkson's clip on the Grand Tour, you'll remember him saying the B pillar is too far forward making a bit difficult to get in and out of the car if you're not slim. That's not a mistake. Moving the B pillar a few inches forward made the Giulia the safest car ever, at least for its driver. Part of the merits, of course, go the body's structural rigidity that also helps with handling.
@@TheTrueWelshIdiot I went to check and the only other one I could find is the Volvo XC60. Then at 97% you have a few cars, such as the Stelvio, other Volvos, BMW 3er and 4er.
It would be nice to see how safe cars like VW Polo, Renault Clio, Dacia Sandero, Peugeot 208, Ford Fiesta and similars are performing in the safety tests. I mean, cars that most of the people can actually buy.
For personal research I know that VW Polo is one of the safest car in the 20/25k price range (and also because I recently bought one so I know first hand how it behaves in traffic when a pedestrian cross the street when he has a red light but that's another story) About the other models I don't really know but nowadays cars are usually very safe
Could you include the euro neap in your individual car tests, very helpful to know it’s safety rating in these four categories. Would be a great additional piece of content.

Driving a tesla model y almost every day, I can confirm that it recognizes stuff quite early. however there is a downside to this. If a cyclist is on the sidewalk in a curve, the car wont let me drive past him without making loads of noise. Also the model y thinks I am running into parking cars, in a turn, and starts yelling at me, even though I amcompletely aware of those cars. I'd say its sometimes(often) very "overreactive". If that makes it safer in real dangerous situations though, I can totally live with it
The nice thing about problems like this is that Tesla will push an update over the air to you at some point and solve this, unlike most other companies
You can actually choose how early the car starts beeping at you when it notices a possible crash. I personally like it on "early" even though its sometimes annoying when it starts beeping at you of a car you clearly can see is braking or something.
@Alejandro There's roughly 5 Tesla fires per 1 billion miles and roughly 53 fires per billion miles for the average vehicle. Those numbers include arson, structure fires and other reasons unrelated to the vehicle. I've heard rumors about higher severity of those fires and especially that firemen are sometimes uneducated on them and/or that battery fires persist for much longer. And in the opposite direction, I've heard the car have been able to warn occupants that the battery firewall has been punctured long before the fire spreads. I don't know the statistics of those aspects though. But I know that Tesla fires are vastly overreported in the news.
@Alejandro Bare in mind, no-one is interested in a 'typical car fire' because it won't get clicks. Putting 'Tesla catches fire AGAIN' in a headline will drive clicks. They are still far safer and have less fires than 'normal' ICE cars.
@Alejandro Anecdotes and extrapolations don't really matter objectively though, unless they plan to be used on a class action against Tesla for fraud, which I doubt there's merit for. So those anecdotes primarily create fear and confirmation bias. Tesla haven't published statistics for 2022 yet (and likely won't until May 2023) but their fire incidents have falling slightly since 2019 so it'd be odd if it had reversed and multiplied by over 10 this year. In my country, there have been quite a few high profile crashes lately and what I've observed is that the more expensive your car, the higher chance you will walk unscathed. For example, a drunk driver with a Q7 killed a couple of girls and smashed the car into a building at 150 km/h. He and the 3 passengers got out and walked unscathed. Can't say the same for the girls tho. Also, in front of my eyes a Panamera hit a rent-a-car at about the same speed. The driver was unscathed, but he killed both passengers in the rented hatchback. So yeah, luxury brands seem to be worth it, at least concerning driver and passenger safety.
Newer or larger and heavier cars always will come out best. Even new cars if there is a big difference in weight you dont want to be in the lighter car

As a fireman having to do lots of RTC crashes every car when impacted should unlock all of the doors. If your driving a car with automatic lock on please turn it off, takes 1 seconds to open a door can take upto 15 minutes to break open a door..
I rank the safety stuff in cars pretty high up (Top 5 criteria) when deciding on a car to buy. I even watch the NCAP testing videos 😂. I won't buy a car that I do not feel safe in, as I drive a lot for work. I do feel it is also important to drive a car as well and feel what you like the most and feel safest in (generally more placsticky stuff feels less safe). I feel the NCAP is a little biased to the first category though, whilst the avoidance stuff is pretty important to prevent problems in the first place. Please add as a criteria in your reviews, so many of the more affordable and small cars also have a sub-3 NCAP safety rating (eg Renault Zoe has 0! and Dacia generally a 1 star), which is just not good enough anymore and should be highlighted. Also important to highlight some of these ratings are impacted by optional safety packs, not always present in a standard option.
@@jame5zhgaming950 Really? I've watched tons of videos and read multiple articles and they all said something along the lines that Tesla has had multiple system failures and overall isn't a reliable vehicle compared to others.
It seems these tests factor in active systems a lot, which might be why. Also, Volvo develops cars from their own stricter standards based on real-life accidents that Volvo has studied, they aren't designed to perform in a lab but on the road in real accidents, things like repeated hits, hitting moose and culverts, ease of rescue after crash and things like that. Personally, if I had to choose one car to be in an accident with and I didn't know what accident and at what speed, I'd choose to entrust a Volvo
Volvo because duh, they have their own tests as well with rolling, weird crashes, and even in sweden going to those crashes and learn from it, things ncap simply doesn't test on or any other company does.
I know it's Euro test, it would be interesting to see if manufacturers offer the same level of protection across the other markets. Myself, living in Thailand, I would like to know. And I'm thinking of buying a Civic which is not on the list.

It might make you safer, but at the expense of everyone else on the road. You are less likely to die in an SUV vs a car, but more likely to die if you hit an SUV vs car. Yet another reason SUV drivers are delusional and selfish.
@@a_single_white_female just buy the biggest heaviest car you can afford. Then you will be safe. If someone in a small car dies that's their poor choice.
@@a_single_white_female Have you watched the video at all? Yes, its a larger car but it also has the best collision avoiding technology Euro ncap has ever seen along with the best rating for being a collision partner vehicle. Lastley why do you have to be rude about it? you think that gonna change the minds of people who buy SUVs?
I wonder what the current removal of Tesla’s ultrasonic sensor suite does for the rating. Will there be a difference (probably because it will rely even more on Tesla Vision) and how big will that difference (initially) be?
For pedestriant savety, I think not much will change, as the braking system already relies on vision. Only objects very close would have been picked up by the ultrasonic sensors.
I read some in depth reviews last spring on the safety of the Model Y and one of the surprising problems was that the automatic emergency braking only slowed the car to around 15 km/h speed. I presume these problems have been fixed with over the air updates, but I'd like to see more thorough safety testing in unfavourable conditions to the safety systems e.g. when some sensors are partially covered by snow.
Tesla is removing ultrasonics - I don’t know how much that affects emergency braking, etc., but those sensors are the ones that most often get blocked for me in snow, etc.
9:17 Not only bought my 2021 refresh Tesla Model 3 Performance as it is a ‘EXTREMELY FAST’ vehicle in its price range but ALSO a ‘EXTREMELY SAFE’ vehicle… being 60+ My mind sometimes writes checks that my body has difficulty cashing out… The idea that the car has faster reflexes than me is a safe feeling…🥴
I hope you realize that if you care about the safety of you and your family in the car when it comes to a crash, Mercedes evs tend to be safer. Teslas merely have more assistance systems as standard so they get a point bonus, but since those rely on cameras they aren’t reliable in bad visual conditions
Never thought about the N cap when buying a car, i mean my current car is only 10 years old and doesn't have any safety stuff that brakes for me or anything but it still got 5 stars, back then.
All of Mazdas line up are super safe and score high. Also super reliable Drivetrains, aside from the hybrid issues being worked out on some new I4 PHEV variants.
I definitely look at Euro NCAP and IIHS for safety measurements. Although some of them have gotten a bit too strict and pretty safe cars get low total scores.
@@Hhhh22222-w It's because they're both lumping active and crash safety together. You could get 100% in not occupants and child safety but if you don't have aeb you wouldn't get 5 stars.
I personally think no car should be able to score the maximum points in any category, just means the test isn't strict enough. But I definitely agree that crash safety and active safety should be separated. Also it would be interesting to see how well these ratings stack up in real accidents and if Volvos even stricter and more realistic homegrown safety tests have resulted in safer cars outside lab environments
Everything breaks! Because of the repairs for the that car they are a lot expensive if you want to reparirati you have to go to the Tesla. Not everybody can buy new Tesla they have to buy a used car.
Excellent video. The NCAP rating does influence my thinking but I also like to look at what the US IIHS say as well on their small frontal impact tests as NCAP don’t do those. What I would like to see is published transparent data about real world crashes showing injuries and deaths in each vehicle in different circumstances. I’d also like to see tests of older vehicles as used by young drivers to see if protection has diminished. Journalists should ensure that poor performance is highlighted, not ignored (Dacia).
The main reason for Dacias low scores is the lack of active systems like automatic braking and those expensive systems can’t really be on cars this cheap. If those systems weren’t accounted for a lot of their cars would achieve 5 star ratings
@@onelyone6976 that’s not quite right, if you look at the adult occupant scores the best any model achieves is 71% for the Duster which is pretty low. If people are comfortable with that no problem as long as they are aware.
@@meriofrog yes absolutely, so there would have to be a large sample comparing like for like. I’ve attended many serious/ fatal incidents and often been struck by the different performance of similar weight / size vehicles when in collision with the same body area.
I dont find euro ncap to be a good metric anymore. Because all they actually look at is active protections systems, the score is 1 star passive safety 4 stars active safety. For actual crash safety i find IIHS to be alot better aligned with reality. this sucks as it lacks euro market vehicles.
One of The most safest cars ever made was the Volvo XC60 2018. That's the reference! Adult Occupant 98% Child Occupant 89% Pedestrian 86% Safety Assist 96%
I was wondering the same... If it was a list consisting of all time tests, then out of 10 there would at least be 5 volvos... But this video only takes into account the cars tested this year only...
@@ramanuj_g Yes you are correct. This video is about 2022 new cars. But after 4 years, the VOLVO XC60 still shows, comparing values, that is one of the most safest cars ever made.
@@niels9663 Why do you say that? What is your opinion? Your comment makes no sense at all... and you don't even bother to answer, because you don't have enough arguments to sustain your nonsense comment. If VOLVO XC60 2018 was incredibly safe just 4 years ago, it still is to this day, incredibly safe and way more safe, than probably all of these cars from 2022, shown in this video.
Not sure if its mentioned in the comments but the NCAP system is flawed is deeply flawed in that the safety ratings are not comparable across class. e.g. a 5 star mid size hatchback is not the same as a 3 ton Range Rover. Mass wins out in a crash and the inequality in risk to smaller cars is only increasing with EVs which are even heavier. Take a look at the real world crash data released by the USA equivalent of NCAP - the IIHS. This shows that small cars are far more dangerous than larger ones - e.g. the Ford Fiesta has a death rate of 180 people per million cars - the top SUV death rate is below 10.. so 18X more risk. A police advanced driver told me that he would never drive anything smaller than a BMW 5 series and even that today is no match if hit at 60 mph by a large SUV.
Yeah I thought that but I think its not there because this is just cars they have tested this year. Next year it will be the EXC90 so will be interesting to see.
Pretty insane that Tesla is already making the safest cars in the world after just ten years of building serious cars. Imagine where they'll be in another ten years. Especially considering they're frequently releasing over the air safety updates like they release other software and performance updates. Even the Model Y today is already much safer then it was when this was tested.
The haters in the comments are hilarious. Literally a video demonstrating the safety and it beating out every other car 'just novelty bro' and 'doesn't look safe to me'. Go touch grass, damn. Literally video evidence you've just watched, the reality denial in the modern world is just insane. 😂😂😂
My nan has had 9 accidents and all the other vehicles were stationery when she hit them. Only inside a garage would be safe. Unless she crashes into the garage !
Some people say they would not buy a Tesla because of its styling. If they appreciated how much aero and safety benefits come from its surface design they might see it in a different light.
People just like to complain and hate on Tesla, there will always be something that people will complain about. For example, its the safest car on the road, BUT, its ugly. FSD is the best self driving system in the world right now, but it still doesn't drive itself (no other car does that).
Teslas aren’t reliable, don’t even have road sign recognition outside the usa, often don’t make it past the first safety inspections, don’t have some of the features that were promised years ago, don’t have high quality materials, lack many convenient things like buttons or even things for safety like a drivers display or hud. But yeah ig as long as the camera based assistance systems work (on a bright summer day) you might be a tad safer. Although honestly the EQE and many chinese cars aren’t worse in any way
It's good to see these test results, however, it would be pretty neat to also test these cars for "false positives" where they engage their safety systems without any reason...that would likely change some of the scores...
The thing is they usually happen in very particular circumstances. Like on a Tesla if you're on autopilot and it's out in the boonies on a straight road, and there's no other traffic, and there's heat shimmer on the highway, and you crest a hill as it sees the heat shimmer it will often hit the brakes for a moment because it thinks it might be an object. And at some point some software update will improve that. If there was some standardized test everybody would just make sure they can pass it.
Would you buy one of the cars on this list? 🤔

Rated extremely safe.
I mean if you die instantly rather than suffer then that is good right?
This is very useful
Hello carwow thank you for the drag race and videos like this Much appreciated thank you matt and team carwow
What about a drag between Rossolini LM CLASSIC vs Tesla Model Y?
Yes! This is what I've been looking for
Surprised to see Volvo so far down the list. But it's still in the top 10 👍
Really AMAZING safe CARS just im gonna say اللهم أرزقنا ياااا☝️ااارب
This was cool to watch but can we have a video of the 5 MOST DANGEROUS cars to own too haha
In Thailand isn’t the biggest worry getting clipped by a scooter while walking?
How would the car's behaviour differ in Thailand as to Europe?
@@lpetn vehicles are made to different standards depending on the market they are sold in and the factory they are made in. The EU Civic could be a very different car in different markets where it's been made to a lower price point
Civic owner here, save your money, its garbage! Japanese cars are overrated!!! I tried mazda, toyota, and now honda. Worst decision ever! Waiting for christmas sales🙄 to get something else!
Conclusion: headlights on Mercedes go flying during an accident
Bought a Model Y. Safety was a big factor as well as ease of charging and performance.
It might make you safer, but at the expense of everyone else on the road. You are less likely to die in an SUV vs a car, but more likely to die if you hit an SUV vs car. Yet another reason SUV drivers are delusional and selfish.
@@a_single_white_female what a conclusion 🤣
@@a_single_white_female SUVs like Krieger Pioneer and Hunter Carson Inferno Van?

Yes, its a larger car but it also has the best collision avoiding technology Euro ncap has ever seen along with the best rating for being a collision partner vehicle. Lastley why do you have to be rude about it? you think that gonna change the minds of people who buy SUVs?
Didn’t take a Volvo long to reach the list. You love to see it. The true brick kings 🫡
Yes, another Chinese company! Volvo.
No joke, I actually got a Volvo Polestar ad before the video started
I wonder what the current removal of Tesla’s ultrasonic sensor suite does for the rating. Will there be a difference (probably because it will rely even more on Tesla Vision) and how big will that difference (initially) be?
For pedestriant savety, I think not much will change, as the braking system already relies on vision. Only objects very close would have been picked up by the ultrasonic sensors.
The ultrasonic is just for parking.
They stopped using ultrasonic sensors for safety reasons ages ago.
@@lachlanB323 false
@@MaticTheProto I'm talking about FSD beta. Ultrasonic sensors were giving data and was hurting the system more then helping. Same with radar.

But you weren't first
I was expecting the new s class,it got a lot of tech for safety precautions and i saw videos of it's crash testing
Yep. Storia X4 is also known for its success of crashtesting multiple times.
Yeah it’s only cars tested in 2022. The s class was tested in 2020 I think
Yeah, the s class is next level
The model y airrangewheelthing (aero wheel) fell off and c-class headlight went bye bye! 😂😂
Agree. Model Y and Storia also have the best safety ratings.
Tesla is removing ultrasonics - I don’t know how much that affects emergency braking, etc., but those sensors are the ones that most often get blocked for me in snow, etc.
@@bartwaggoner2000 It doesn't have any impact. Tesla's use camera's only anyway.

Mat can you drag race a Tesla Model S Plaid against a Lamborghini Ultimae with Yianni?
No..
No match
1.Tata Safari & Tata Harrier
2. Skoda
3. Volvo
4. Mahedera Scorpio
Number 1 reason why I bought my Model Y, make sure that my family is as safe as possible.
But it doesn't protect children as well as others.
Crazy how a new car company makes safer cars than those who have been around for +100 years
Evs are safer duh. Also all new brands hire experts from said 100+ yo brands.
They have to up the standards, since most modern cars are very safe.
@@Hhhh22222-w
It's because they're both lumping active and crash safety together.
You could get 100% in not occupants and child safety but if you don't have aeb you wouldn't get 5 stars.
@@Robert-cu9bm yeah. That’s literally why tesla and the chinese made the top 5 this year
I personally think no car should be able to score the maximum points in any category, just means the test isn't strict enough. But I definitely agree that crash safety and active safety should be separated. Also it would be interesting to see how well these ratings stack up in real accidents and if Volvos even stricter and more realistic homegrown safety tests have resulted in safer cars outside lab environments
In my opinion, the safest brands will always be Tesla, Volvo, Mazda, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Mercedes, and Lexus..
Yay Tesla (btw lexus - Toyota are the same brand)
So Tesla Model Y is not only the best selling car in the world but also the safest, why do Tesla get so much hate then?
Idk Tesla the best
People, dont like Elon Musk, and/or they hate EVs
Everything breaks! Because of the repairs for the that car they are a lot expensive if you want to reparirati you have to go to the Tesla. Not everybody can buy new Tesla they have to buy a used car.
Most people only remember safety when they lose a loved one to a car accident. SAD!
Death is not a good metric to determine how safe a car is. There are a lot of variables in fatal crashes.
Really important information.
Mat can you drag race a Tesla Model S Plaid against a Lucid Air with The Stig?
No no no no no theres no chance☄
I dont find euro ncap to be a good metric anymore. Because all they actually look at is active protections systems, the score is 1 star passive safety 4 stars active safety. For actual crash safety i find IIHS to be alot better aligned with reality. this sucks as it lacks euro market vehicles.

Did you watch this video?
if you’d test the volvo again right now, it wouldn’t score as good as it did back then
@@niels9663 Why do you say that?
I bet Volvo XC90 is on the list😊
Yeah I thought that but I think its not there because this is just cars they have tested this year. Next year it will be the EXC90 so will be interesting to see.

Pretty insane that Tesla is already making the safest cars in the world after just ten years of building serious cars. Imagine where they'll be in another ten years. Especially considering they're frequently releasing over the air safety updates like they release other software and performance updates. Even the Model Y today is already much safer then it was when this was tested.

@@meriofrog actually chinese cars sh*t on tesla by now. Including in terms of self driving features

Really?!?!? Insane? Please explain how
It's good to see these test results, however, it would be pretty neat to also test these cars for "false positives" where they engage their safety systems without any reason...that would likely change some of the scores...
