  • Today we unbox and take a first look at the new Harbor Freight Predator 212cc Ghost 👻 racing kart engine. This is a box stock style racing engine for an asphalt racing kart. The new Ghost has a 6000 rpm digital governor, heavy valve springs, top plate, and VM22 round slide carb. The engine will not come with an air filter, exhaust, gas tank out of the box. We put the engine on our trail master mini bike for a first test ride. Let us know what you think and don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more!!!

Is right, this is targeted @ dudes racing stock circuit classes with motors like briggs and stuff. This motor cuts them Wisconsin boys down by more than half on price point.

Thank you for all that you do. Really clear specs up, humorous, and factual. I bought one of these engines and mated it with my old Carter go-kart frame. It rips, yes. Reliable. No complaints at all. Diving into valve springs, push rods, connecting rods, flywheels and billet side cover. All to upgrade to a live axel and hydraulic disc brakes,

This will never be raced widely. The Briggs 206 is locked and they have very good parity. These HF engines have neither and therefore would need blueprinted…. And no one wants to go back to the money burning process of blueprinting. The secret sauce to making LO206 racing affordable is the lock on the block. I wouldn’t race this engine if I got 10 for free, it would still be way too expensive.

Nice video, thank you. I’m a new subscriber and totally enjoyed this video. I’ve been involved with kart racing for 34 years now. All 2 stroke engines. I currently have a shifter kart and a grandson interested in getting in a kart. But he definitely does not need to be in my kart. I came across a video last night on the HF 212cc Ghost engine. It peaked my interest. My wife and I discussed this engine over coffee this morning. So old 64 year old Papaw ran his happy butt down to Harbor Freight and grabbed a new 212cc Ghost Engine and the accessories package. Been reading up a little today and then came across your channel this evening. I love the way you unboxed this engine. Honest opinion and no BS. I’m anxious to watch more of your videos. I feel you will help me cut down my learning curve on 4 stroke engines. I sure hope so, because I know nothing about them. I’d like to keep this stock starting out. But I did pick up on your recommendation of replacing the cast iron flywheel from the get go. Kind of curious as to the best oil, spark plug, type of clutch or torque converter that you would recommend if you don’t mind? Any and all information or options would be greatly appreciated. Can’t wait to start through your previous videos that could help me with this Ghost engine. Keep up the great video work. Totally loving your style. God bless.

The reason for classes in karting is for a level playing field. This engine is slightly above base model 212, with a better starting platform for mods, but that's not the role it's made to fill. It's geared toward racing out of the box and it will be a standard format to build more affordable karting leagues around.
I'm glad to see it, and hoping that this will open up the kart racing world to more people who cant afford (or don't know about) LO206/Animal/WF racing leagues.

    • @davidhodge0201
      @davidhodge0201 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That was the idea behind converting to the clone from the Briggs flathead. More affordable. More available, and level (ish) playing field. By the time I got out of kart racing it was over 1000 usd for a good Honda clone that could compete at the top. It has merely replaced the Briggs flathead at this point as far as being super expensive to be competitive (outside of local track amateur classes). Man I miss it but the amount of work that goes into being competitive in kart racing is crazy. Got burned out on it. A race car is cheaper, easier to maintain and from my experience alot less work. Lol.

Base 212 in my opinion is better , don’t gotta worry about restriction on mods like flywheels and losing your higher rev limit. The ghost is more for people who just want to buy a “race engine” then spend another 2-300$ on a kit of plug and play accessories to complete it 😂 don’t get me wrong to each their own but I feel like if your gonna get into something you need to learn it

Just a reminder to some of your younger viewers. The sheet metal coming around the fins on the block and head is there to form a cooling cowling. Too many young minibike hobbyist think the is optional heat shield. Not the case, this sheet metal is there to keep the flywheel fan air moving in-between the fins for proper cooling. If you remove this sheet metal the fan pushed air will not stay in between the fins and the engine can over heat.

I had it on a Flexo Big Bear, (TINY) minibike. 6,000 RPM Centrifugal clutch. That thing hauled ass. 0-60 in about 6 seconds. but that was its peak because of a 10-1 chain gear ratio. Great video. like start with "base" model, then include a stage 1 (better carb, better exhaust), stage 2 (carb, exhaust, flywheel, cam springs, and rod.), stage 3 (all of stage 2+ cam upgrade, and taller valve cover, heavier springs, better (dished) piston, rings, and maybe even a pumper carb or a combo velocity-pumper style, and a custom exhaust header for higher flow rates, with intake and exhaust porting.

This would be a good motor for someone who doesn’t wanna get their hands dirty … and just bolt it up to whatever style kart they have.
Everyone else will just go stock 212/224 and build from there.
    I grabbed a 224, removed “guvnah”, slipstream billet wheel, 24mm F/S, hot265er and 22lbers … runs damn good.

If this works with little issues (mainly the cast iron flywheel not exploding). This could replace LO206. To get on track with a 206, a turn key engine costs 1,200$.

I’d like to see the weight on that flywheel. Everyone just looks at an aluminum flywheel as a safety factor and forget that the lighter flywheel helps the engine spin up faster. Really makes a performance improvement on a minibike!

  • @alexlacroix8127

The Wildcat 223 is the king of stock small blocks. I bought one delivered I paid $220. The casting [block] is almost identical to the Tillotson race blocks. Also comes with a 7 bolt sidecover. Hands down the 58mm crank is a potential monster. EC carbs designed the engine that's where I will let my comment's rest.

personally I think I would go with the tilly 212 it makes more hp and can be ordered with flywheel cam and carb upgrades if it was a option but if its a class restriction to the g212 because some classes say predator

Got this engine sitting on the workbench. Will be going on a Coyote Kart. Just curious as to the safe limit of motor mount angle for this engine? This is my first 4 stroke. So I’m needing to know how much angle I can use and not cause any oil level or lubrication problems. Thank you and God bless.

Long time listener, first time caller lol! I was wondering what would be a better $300ish deal? buy a ghost? Or buy a stock 212 tillotson, stick a $50 cam and advance key in it with say a mikuni 22mm carb? I have no experience besides stock predator 212s. Looking for most power and reliabilit for that price range.

Kinda what my youngest son's best friend has on his go cart. And it's freaking fast top speed is like 53 miles a hour. And with me on it top speed is like 49 miles a hour. Lucky the gas and brake are on the steering wheel.

Hey Redbeard, from what you can tell, would you pick this over a standard 212 for a race kart build? I have 212 stage 2 and wanted to know if it's worth putting all my parts on this motor

    • @Zat368

First impression, I you want an engine for a "one design" class With more power than the box stock 212, it looks like a good deal. But, if you want to have free license to massage a 212 , with no class limits, the stock 212 looks like the better choice . Then you could start with the 24 mm carb, billet flywheel, aftermarket valve springs and no governor. Plus you would add any other bits.you want. At this point you have more power than the Ghost for similar bucks. In that scenario the stock 212 makes more sense. Good video, you provide a great service to help the rest of us say abreast of developments. You mentioned a laundry list of other similar engines. Do you think it would be too much of a deep dive to compare all of these different engines strengths and weaknesses in one video. Your channel is my "go to" source for design tech on this hobby.
