I'll say this for the Gran Turismo license tests: I completely sucked at racing games until I got through those, but now I can play them competently. Those tests even helped me drive better in real life - less because the physics were true-to-life, and more because all the principles they teach are sound. That menu music and really all the music was all rock and electronic themed outside of JP which was still likely Kazunori's choice (being the Director and Producer), but those choices worked out very well in the US and in the EU as well. Despite liking rock music only the tracks that made it into the game from each respective artist really resonated with me (then and now). I still listen to those tracks, the licensed ones but every time I do, I think about GT... I still have my OG copy which wasn't even purchased for me. My parents picked it up for themselves but they never really played it and they eventually relinquished ownership of Gran Turismo (1998) to me though my mother still has the second game in her cabinet it was purchased by my father, but he doesn't play it either. Kind of how I got into some other games on PS was from games my parents rarely picked up for themselves like Air Combat, Star Wars: Dark Forces and Tiny Tank (the latter in that list was not a kids game, but I was allowed to watch).

I have one of the best childhood memories with Gran Turismo. Me and my friend were obsessed with this game. I often took my console to his house because of the bigger TV he had and we spent hours tuning and customizing our cars. Good times!
I did exactly the same. I remember us playing it all night and we would take notes of the 0-400m and 0-1000m times of the fastest cars, tinkering with gear ratios, camber, suspension stiffness etc.
Yup. This was the first driving game that made my jaw hit the floor. All the previous "racing" games were kiddie toys. This was the first one that felt "real" to me.
I think the important thing to remember when considering the quirks of the license tests and even he quirks outside of the license tests is that Kaz was also very heavily influenced by the TV magazine Best Motoring, a kind of Japanese Top Gear. There’s an official Best Motoring Chanel on YT and if you go and watch some of the 90’s uploads all will become immediately clear, as the way they used to evaluate cars from small Kei cars to firebreathing supercars all included these kinds of trials. And once you watch the track battle you’ll basically realise the whole game just reacreates the world of the TV show. And I love it even more for it!
I remember my brother playing this and then later me. To this day I remember the Dodge Viper GTS being an absolute beast, especially in the Normal car cup.
The start and break test is one of the best lessons this tests teach, englobed in it is: visual sign to breaking points, acceleration from 0 and breaking. Learn something every day they said did not know this alway played it with the Logitech steering wheel never used a controller So many great memories with both gt2 and gt3 awesome game
This game meant so much to me. It led to my love of the series overall, and by the time I played GT3 A-Spec, I knew that the first car I would fully finance on my own would be a Subaru WRX. But it all started here. This game, more than anything else in my life, taught me to love the art of driving, and that no car was just a car but a machine with a distinctive personality.
It should be noted that Gran Turismo didn't look how it is presented here. We had CRT tv sets that smoothed the image slightly. Most of us played on 14" sets explaining very large icons. Colour bleed and such were all factors in development. We didn't have hi-res pixel perfect displays back then. Just an observation not a critique. Great video.
It’s funny how the graphics got better by the end of the video. It’s like my brain started filling in the lack of pixels. Thanks for the video. I have a lot of memories playing these games with my Dad.
I have to say, the portion about the art style, music, and menus was spot on. This was one of the first games I really got into as a kid and the US cover, and dealer music has stayed with me to this day. Did we ever figure out whats under the car cover?
GT 1 will always have a place in my heart.I grew up with games like stunts which was a dos game wacky wheels nfs 1 test drive 1 etc etc. When i first got gt 1 was like 15 years old and it change my way of playing car games. It also introduced me to the skyline which are my all time favorite(T R32)I didnt mind the grinding. That is the reason i uninstalled forza horizon 4 because you get fast cars without putting any work in it.I have original gt from 1-4(never got a ps3 or 4 nor would i ever get one)I play gt 4 on pc with emulator and i love it so far.Never got around to finish 3 and 4 so taking some time to do so.
Gran Turismo was recommended to me by a game store employee when I was 7, i had never seen any news of it. It was significantly harder than than any game I’d ever played before, and caught the attention of my entire family.
A friends dad walked in on us watching the replay of our last race. He thought we were watching TV highlights of a real race. Hard to imagine anything elce on the PSX passing as "true to life"
I use to play this on my phone time to time, but I had a blast with this review, that soundtrack... hits just in the right spot for us back in the day went nuts with this game, also I like that you show the game as it was, withouth enhanced graphics by emulation, thats pretty cool, thanks you the best dude keep it up
The two best things about the OG GT IMHO? Grinding out wins to buy upgrades while chilling to the soundtrack, and rocking the races in a freaking Ford Taurus jellybean. Why? Just because. But I will say, I got tired of "upgrading" to "better" (at least newer) GTs because they became all about arcade driving the best of the best cars. I mean a power trip is fun, but the real fun was finding cars friends or I actually owned and upgrading them to race better than we ever did IRL. THAT was the fun part. I also swear while the graphics got better, the physics got worse with every new game. Having done time in autocross, I know what real cars can do, and in game they just kept getting worse and worse by comparison to reality.
It’s amazing how after so many years this games music is still memorable and it’s approaching a quarter of a century old soon. A true racing classic game
menu and dealership music was so cool and charming in this game! BTW I can see you didnt know about the GTO twin turbo ( not the LM version) wich was the strongest car in the game :D
People don't understand how ahead of it's time this game was. It was like someone from 10 years in the future had come to deliver their version of what a racing game should be, making every other game of the time feel like a quick demo.
Aka ToCa World Touring Cars, its real name. I love that game, though it felt a bit less polished than ToCa 2 in terms of gameplay and sounds. The cheats are what made it infinitely replayable for random fun haha
My brother and I would do those 4 hour+ endurance races all weekend sometimes. Those were almost psychedelic in nature. You'd drive tsukuba perfectly for hours at a time and not even remember it. My brother and I also got into amateur racing in our teen years and I credit Gran Turismo for our early podium finishes. Being able to see the ideal racing line at the subconscious level was a great help. Even up to today my brother and I cannot be in two motor vehicles of any type at the same time without racing fiercely, despite the catalog of contusions, broken bones, and legal penalties we've accrued from doing so. Last time it was 4x4 pick up trucks with studs on a snowmobile ice race course situated on a frozen lake. I assert that I won because I was able to keep my truck out of the snowberm the longest.
I remember buying this when it came out when I was a kid. I read the driving manual cover to cover, did every race and got gold on all license tests. I shared my memory card at school so other could see the GT40 (unlocked with gold licenses) and see my achievement. I learned so much about cars and driving as a young kid through this game. Now I'm playing GT7 on the PS5 and it feels like nothing has changed.
Wow seeing Motor Toon Gran Prix literally unlocked memories I forgot I had. I can't believe it! Gran Turismo & everything in this video was significant in my childhood but i couldn't remember it haha
I remember playing the shit out of this game! Me loving this game is a understatement. At that time I was in love with cars and still to this day. Finding out non-USA cars are unicorns to me. Still to this day.
Received a copy of this before it was launched in the UK. My mate said he had a few Japanese games so would translate as much as he could. Played the entire game having to guess the requirements for the tests because he could translate nothing, now that was tricky.
If you like OG racing games from the dawn of home 3D, you should check some DOS/Windows racing games too! Namely, Grand Prix series, pretty much the first modern simracing series (I recommend starting with GP2) and maybe Spirit Of Speed 1937, being the weird one in the bunch of Microprose games. And you should definetly take a look at the Sega GT, the only game that I can remember from that age that dared to take on the GT1/2, it was direct competitor that was... good enough. Great video btw, I knew that Mr. Kaz was quite a maniac, but that's something special! Keep up the good work!
I still have my original copy of the game, the trust and creative freedom they gave to the team and the dedication they had really helped this game become one of the big hits of the PlayStation, and definitely influcenced the PlayStation's popularity and reputation.

TVR Cerbera remains my favourite car from any game. An absolute beast
I miss the vacuum they used to record the car sounds.
Get the new golf or new toyota gr yaris and you’ll be in for a treat
Thanks for the in depth videos! I subbed for your amazing amount of details and also for your coverage on the best games for past gen consoles! I just got back into my PS3 and my 360 because of your forza and gt videos, you rock and greetings from Florida!
This videogame has shaped me in so many ways… i already loved cars before it but when i played this and gt2 my relationship with cars… it is just part of my life
Starting Gran Turismo 3, "Pressure Sensitivity" was used, allowing you to press the X button harder to go faster.
Learn something every day they said did not know this alway played it with the Logitech steering wheel never used a controller
So many great memories with both gt2 and gt3 awesome game
Not sure how nostalgia is talking, but there's something about those ps1 graphics that hit home for me
This game meant so much to me.
Watched alot of your vids. Just subbed, im loving the more in-depth reviews. Keep it up. Love your content.
Thank you for the memories! Me and my grandmother played this when I was so young :)
Even Yamauchi can’t remember what car is it.
Nice review, bro, Gran Turismo 1 was undoubtedly one of the most important racing games on the PSone despite it's sequels outclassing it.
Your voice sounds like it belongs in a racing game tutorial
"Alright kid, let's see whatchu got! Drive to that start line so we can get started"
Oh, that riff at 7:11 cut to my soul
Lol I learned how to drive using Gran Turismo. People tell me that I drive very well and smoothly
A friends dad walked in on us watching the replay of our last race. He thought we were watching TV highlights of a real race. Hard to imagine anything elce on the PSX passing as "true to life"
ridge racer 4 replays ?
*Yes !!!!* 🎉🎈
Thank you for making this video!
My favorite game ever made.
Great review! I recently backed up my old Memory Cards. Can't wait to race my beloved Mitsubishi FTO again ❤️
This came out when I was in college, and led to a lot of skipped classes and drunk virtual driving.
Super cool video! Love the concept of retro reviews.
Loved the video man and I remember getting this for my birthday and it was amazing
This well deserved a re review thanks buddy
The best Gran Turismo review video I have ever seen
I use to play this on my phone time to time, but I had a blast with this review, that soundtrack... hits just in the right spot for us back in the day went nuts with this game, also I like that you show the game as it was, withouth enhanced graphics by emulation, thats pretty cool, thanks you the best dude keep it up
I spent 100s of hours playing this game in the 90s it was the greatest game ever made at that point of time
The two best things about the OG GT IMHO?
BTW I can see you didnt know about the GTO twin turbo ( not the LM version) wich was the strongest car in the game :D
this game is where i first learned that the skyline gtr existed.
People don't understand how ahead of it's time this game was. It was like someone from 10 years in the future had come to deliver their version of what a racing game should be, making every other game of the time feel like a quick demo.
16:55 That winning soundtrack......i got it on my smartphone now because i liked it as a kid already and still love it!
Another game that I play back in the day is, Jarret and Labonte stock car racing, it's awesome
Aka ToCa World Touring Cars, its real name. I love that game, though it felt a bit less polished than ToCa 2 in terms of gameplay and sounds. The cheats are what made it infinitely replayable for random fun haha
Great video. Thank you for great memories. Still have 1 and 2.
You forgot to mention if you rub the logo on the disc, it'll smell like a tyre.
I think this was only true for GT2? Like the rubber smell right?
Considering this is 1998 the graphics look incredible!
*1997
the yellow evo was my go to for this game, it was grippy AF
Wow seeing Motor Toon Gran Prix literally unlocked memories I forgot I had. I can't believe it! Gran Turismo & everything in this video was significant in my childhood but i couldn't remember it haha
💥💥 Ah the good ol days of gaming in the 90s and 2000s
As always, amazing quality review!
Let's get you to that magic 100k subs soon!
Great review. This took me right back. I always felt this title had so much potential and the GT2 really solidified it.
This game was incredible when it first came out. There was nothing like it. It looks very dated today, but it was absolutely boss back in the day.
I remember playing the shit out of this game! Me loving this game is a understatement. At that time I was in love with cars and still to this day. Finding out non-USA cars are unicorns to me. Still to this day.
I never owned the full game but I played the hell outta this game on my demo discs.....jampack and underground
Me too, I was really bad at it
Received a copy of this before it was launched in the UK.
The official number of cars in GT1, according to the Gran Turismo Wiki, is between 160-180.
So...it's more like an official range, then? That's not an exact number!
@@qactustick It's meant to account for certain cars appearing in one region versus another (Cars that only appear in NTSC-U/C versus NTSC-J), I believe.
2:48 hip cups!
