Algonquin's Kingscote Lake - heat wave, bugs, and the promise of silver lake trout.

  • The Happy Camper and partner Kristine Redmond head out for their first trip after the Covid-19 lockdown. Kingscote Lake is Algonquin Parks most southern access - and gets far less traffic than the regular Highway 60 corridor through the middle of the park. It's June - so there's a heat wave and lots of bugs - but it's still an amazing are of the park to go on a canoe trip. The lake also holds a unique blend of lake trout that can't be found anywhere else in the park.

    Loons are my favourite nature sound as well. Plenty of loons around the lakes here in NS luckily. Sitting around a fire with a libation or two listening to loons is my favourite relaxation technique.

    My lovely wife always knew what time it was and she never owned a watch. I miss her so much, but I love watching you two. Thank you for your videos. I've just come back from a canoe trip in the lake District of Britain where I live. Much love to both of you. Safe trips guys.

    I enjoyed your trip! I had BPV once, I was a mess for about a week. When I went to the ER they laughed at me when I requested they raise the arms on the bed because i was afraid I would fall out. Learning the maneuver really helped and I am glad it hasn't come back!

    I'm so sorry you suffer from vertigo. Me too. I've trained myself to do the Epley manoeuvre too. But it's not easy to do it on yourself in the woods. I hope it leaves you alone for good long stretches.

    I used to have the "accurate time-telling" psychic superpower during my teenage years. I was almost always accurate within 1-2 minutes of whoever had a watch, 5 mins off usually at worst. Sadly, I lost that superpower in my 20s and am envious that you still have it. ;P

    I was on the York River adjacent to Kingscote and caught a bunch of those silver trout in the back eddies of the river June 19th. I didnt know what they were at first but then I remembered another video and you talking about these trout. I was literally just tossing in worms on a baitcaster. Super fun but most intense bugs of my life.

    Something I've always done in hot humid weather, especially with quick drying fabrics, is dunk them, soak them with water. As the water evaporates they cool. You'll be a lot more comfortable. Ditto with a hat/cap.

    Round Island Lake has a similar history with lake trout. A shallow spring fed lake. Deepest spot is around 50 feet with cold, cold water. Sometimes fish get trapped in a shallower part of the lake because of the nature of the lake.
    The trout has actually developed scales on the body. I think this is due to parts of the lake getting warmer than others.

      The pic shows the difference of a regular lake trout and the silver lake trout...and yes, the audio dropped a few times when I was using my smaller camera (it doesn't have the best mic). Sorry about that. I tried to boost it in the edit...

    Had a spark land in my lap a few weeks back. Nylon hiking pants. Thought I got stung by a bee. Wisconsin has hybrided coho, walleye and muskie. They call it a cowallski. Tastes like a braught if you cook over wood. New paddle?

    • @TheHappyCamper
      @TheHappyCamper  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. The paddle was given to me by a canoe instructor from Germany. He wanted me to try it out. It's a very nice paddle - I'll have to look into where it's made.

    • @TheHappyCamper

      It is along the east shore. Campsites on that lake are generally small. The best one is on the far northern side, just left of the portage heading east.
