- The Happy Camper, Kristine and the two dogs head north now - this time for a 5 day canoe trip on Ontario's Upper French River. Beautiful scenery, picturesque campsites, and no other paddlers to share it with.

Kevin Callan’s Basic Bannock
Ingredients:
½ cup white flour
½ cup whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking powder
3 tbsp powdered milk
½ tsp salt
Directions:
Mix all dry ingredients and add water slowly until dough is slightly sticky. Separate into three to four patties and fry in an oiled frying pan over moderate heat until both sides are golden brown.

Absolutely agree about each person having a map. My husband, Kory and I started doing that on our last trip - makes so much sense! You guys sure have dealt with a lot of rain this year, wow!
That rain reminds me of every time I went camping in Scouts. No matter what, if I went to a camp, it would rain, usually an all day drizzle marked with heavier downpours, but not bad enough to stop anything.
Slug in your wine got me! I can tolerate and do find them in many places...not my wine!!!
We were camping that same weekend. Incredible rainfall amounts. Kristine is so nice, you’re a lucky guy Kevin.

They get along really well - or at least tolerate one another. Totally different characters.
Kristine, what works best for a sleeping pad when car camping is a futon. I take a twin size futon that became surplus for home use. It's sealed in a plastic moving bag in case of a tent flood, which happened once without issue due to the plastic bag. I put a thick old sleeping bag as a base layer and regular sleeping bags on top. It's perfect for fall car camping and no air mattress compares to the luxury of a futon. And I only discovered this when one year I wanted to go camping and I wasn't ready to invest in new air mattresses - and the old "thin" self inflating mattresses were not coming!
Last weekend, my wife and I paddled the French River figure 8 loop in your book, Boy did it rain on Saturday. The site that we choose did not have any good place to pitch a tent. We ended up pitching the tent on a bit of a slope and used boards that we found to divert the flowing water! My wife Christine also had to brave the rain to visit the thunder box. Very similar experience.
I'm glad you were able to deal with it. It sure was a lot of rain.

Was just in Algonquin and first night out stayed at a site that I have been to many times and also "assumed" there would be a camp grill as every other time I'd been at that site there had been many. Yup no grill. I feel your pain!

Years ago I saw a TH-cam video by some guy who started his video with cardboard animation and a squeaky toy. He suggested that an umbrella would be handy in a rainy camp. Do you remember him?
I went into Hartley bay and rented a fishing boat once about 20 years ago. It was one of the best trips I ever took saw my first black bear and caught my first Norther Pike. Love that place.

We accessed Riverview marina - just north of Dokis. We circled the upper French clockwise. The northern Bays were very nice and secluded. I'll have a detailed write up on my Explore Magazine blog next week. The tarp is Dan Cooke's Custom Sewing - they can be bought in Canada from Canadian Outdoor Equipment store.

Kevin, steaks can be cooked successfully in a frying pan and be just as tender and yummy. Requires some butter or bacon fat, steak spice, garlic…..
I did all three...and it was yummy.
I went in to the Bad River Channel Saturday morning and I cannot get over how much it rained and rained all day. I felt for everyone on the river. You two have not had much luck with the weather. Kristine, I drank a lot of wine that day as well (and read).
It was a lot of rain. So glad the road out of Dokis wasn't washed out like so many in the area.

I have that same stove, works great, however I left the regulator with the brass tuibe not commected to anything in my little camper over the winter and the brass tube ruptured, never would have anticipated that. It is a replacement part but Jet Boil won't ship to Canada and MEC can't get one. Fortunately I found a Woods branded similar part at Cdn Tire and seems to work OK.
Why wouldn't Jet Boil US ship to Canada? That's not good.
@@TheHappyCamper Not sure why. They list the part as a spare, however, their website very clearly states "we do not ship internationally or to freight forwarding compaines who do ship internationally", please contact your local distributor. I spoke to MEC and they were very sympathetic about it but sorry could not get that part. I saw some negative internet chatter grumbling about that regulator tubing. The Woods regulator that I replaced it with looks the same but has a much heavier piece of tubing and the threads mating to the stove seem to fit OK. The Coleman equivalent does not fit this stove, I tried. Might be a good idea to buy a spare, $49.95 at Cdn Tire, as the JetBoil tubing does seem a little flimsy and easy to kink or bend in the field or in my case rupture, did not know propane could freeze and expand in the tubing, just too lightweight I guess. I know you winter camp so freezing it could be an problem, so keep that in mind. I enjoy your videos so keep it up.

There is no bottles and cans ban because there is a lot of motorboat traffic on the French River.
They're usually is - but we saw little on this trip. I'm assuming because the border is still closed and a lot of camps are owned by Americans. Sad to see so many historical places boarded up.
Hey Kevin. Really enjoy watching your videos. My cousins and I go on an annual canoe trip, typically lots of portaging. Question regarding your food. How long would you typically be ok to eat salami or pepperoni, cheese, bacon without ice?
The dried meat would last the entire 10-12 day trip if it's the stuff that doesn't require refrigeration. Cheese lasts longer than you think but I place it in a cheese cloth with a bit of vinegar after day 4 or so. I get pre-cooked bacon from the local deli and that would last a week or more for sure. I only use the cooler and ice for the first two days of steak and other red meats. Eggs would last 3-4 days - farm fresh eggs are better and last longer.

The rule of backcountry camping grills: if you really need one, there will be none at the site. If you don't need it, or heaven forbid bring your own, there will be 5 perfect grills strewn around the site.

It was awesome. No leaking. We did have some water splash up from the ground under the fly during a severe downpour.
Kevin, do you keep your ice in ziploc bags inside the barrel cooler? Last time I just dumped it straight in but the seams leaked the water into the barrel
I do. The barrel cooler shouldn't leak though. I should test that out before my next trip.

Where did you get the tarp? It looks like it does a good job. I use a Siltarp and it seems a little small for the four of us.

Did you guys start around Boom island? Was thinking of doing this trip but the area around Dokis has a lot of dams and rapids. Where is a safe place to launch around there?
We started and finished at Mountain Cover Lodge, just north of the town of Dokis. You can also start at the Dokis Marina.

New subscriber here, question about how to make Bannock, is is 3 or 6 tablespoons of powder milk and 1 or 3 teaspoons baking powder? I’m enjoying your channel. Lots of fun. My boy friend and I are now in the market for a two person light weight canoe (15-16 foot.). It will mostly be used for lake paddling. We would like something with a keel, having a had time finding one, have any suggestions?
For a trip I usually make a larger batch - 2 cups of flour - 6 tablespoons of powdered mild and 3 teaspoons of baking powder. A prospector model will be the best for lake travel - no need for a keel. Nova Craft has a good desgin.

I'm sorry but to use that downpour as an argument for global warming is ignoring statistical variance rather bad.
That aside, yes, global temperatures (especially in the north) has been rising since the last cold period in the 1800's, when meterological measurements started and ice skating on the river Thames was all the rage. But there has been exeptions like in the 1970s, an unusually cold period. And since we have not just geological meaurements but a rather large amount of literature lying around, including those of tax collectors logging crops and their outcomes, we have fairly good data on longer periods than that. It varies a lot, and we're not even close to warm periods like the mediaval when the Vikings settled Greenland.Yes it was green at the time, and a good distance into the inland at that.
Which doesn't correlate to manmade emissions of greenhouse gases in the least.
So please, folks. The reasons why our climate fluctuates so much are still fairly unknown. From what I know of metereology (and I have most of my background in applied maths) these things are complex, and save for statistical smoothing over a sufficient length of time these things are constantly subject to the butterfly effect of chaos theory. There's a (very low) chance this warm period may be the result of a butterfly fluttering its wings (that's not really my point), but there may be a whole range of other reasons as well and (this is my point) we need to realize its difficult to really know. We can't just claim "this is science" and use that to claim power. (Race theory, lobotomy, electrshock therapy, treatment of all sorts of illnesses with radiation and other not so funny theories were also deemed "science" in their days.)
Sure, we can make theories, but if those theories won't hold up to easily recognizable data we have to find better theories. Not hold on to them religiously just because we like them so much.

@@canadiangemstones7636 Not in the least. I usually ask flat earthers where you can find the boat that traditionally was meant to bring the sun back to its initial position in the morning. And it's the same issue with the moon and with a whole lot of satellites we rely on: Poor topology.
I'm originally a math guy, with a degree in mechanics, the cross between maths and classical physics that makes up the basis of meteorology. And the efforts at calculating our future climate. But I veered off into trying to understand the other part of that debate, and then into philosophy as my whole idea of science as something you "knew" fell down like a house of cards.
And that's just the issue: People try to tell each others that science is something "you know", while the philosophy of science itself says that you can't know. It's all a huge debate, where people discuss what there is to see at the horizon of what they can see, and beyond. Where the idea that science is something you "know" is more religion than a scientific idea. Giving rise to overambitious theories as we see in the climate debate now.
You can have a look at Tomas Kuhn and his Structure of Scientific Revolutions for an introduction. People like Karl Popper and Ludwig Wittgenstein can also be interesting.
